This chapter of the New York City Panel on Climate Change 4 (NPCC4) report considers climate health risks, vulnerabilities, and resilience strategies in New York City's unique urban context. It updates evidence since the last health assessment in 2015 as part of NPCC2 and addresses climate health risks and vulnerabilities that have emerged as especially salient to NYC since 2015. Climate health risks from heat and flooding are emphasized. In addition, other climate-sensitive exposures harmful to human health are considered, including outdoor and indoor air pollution, including aeroallergens; insect vectors of human illness; waterborne infectious and chemical contaminants; and compounding of climate health risks with other public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence-informed strategies for reducing future climate risks to health are considered.

Abstract Background The war between Tigray Regional Government in Northern Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Federal Government along with its allies followed by the accompanying siege between November 2020 and November 2022 led to the collapse of Tigray’s healthcare system. The present study compared diabetes care among children at the Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Tigray, during the war and siege period with that of the pre-war period. Methods We employed a retrospective cross-sectional survey using data from September 2019 to August 2020 (pre-war period) and compared it with data between September 2021 to August 2022 (war & siege period). We applied descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages and calculated Pearson’s or Spearman’s correlation analyses to assess correlations as appropriate. Results We identified 143 admitted pediatric patients (56 in the pre-war and 87 during the war & siege periods) with a mean age of 109 months in both periods. A higher proportion of diabetes admissions were accounted for by diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) during the war & siege period (90%) compared to the pre-war period (75%). The most common precipitating factor for DKA in the pre-war period was infections (35%), while for the war & siege period, there was malnutrition (47%), infection (46%), lack of access to healthcare facilities (31%) and running out of medicines (24%). Complications such as death, renal failure, cerebral edema, and shock were more common during the war & siege periods. The case fatality rate, which occurred at 9% during the war and siege (vs 0% during pre-war) was significantly correlated with the severity of DKA, the degree of hypokalemia, the presence of complications, and admission during the war & siege period. Conclusions Our study showed the negative impact of war and siege on diabetes care in children demonstrating a high rate of DKA admissions with increased severity, complications, malnutrition, and case fatality rates. People with diabetes especially type 1 deserve great attention during such a crisis as the lack of insulin could lead to severe complications including death.

Two types of the waste lithium batteries (Spent-LIBs) without crushing were heated in a batch furnace at 500–550 °C for 5 h, then crushed and the lump metals from outer package removed to obtain the powder sample "Black sand". The simple substances of Ni, Co, Fe, Al, Cu, and C were mainly contained along with MnO, LiAlO2, and LiF in the black sand. The carbon used in the anode would act as a reducing agent to obtain the simple substances in the sealed lithium-ion batteries. The minor metals of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn were abundantly contained in the sieved black sand of less than 500 µm size with the carbon. The metals of Al, Cu, and Fe from the package and the current collector of the batteries were contained in the large sieved particles. The average elution ratio for the lithium using deionized water was ca. 69–70 % from the black sand. The elution ratio was higher for the samples having a particle size smaller than 300 µm, and it decreased for the samples having a larger particle size. The formation of the insoluble LiAlO2 phase in water affected the Li non-dissolution in the black sand. The metals and oxides in the black sand dissolved in a 4 M HCl solution except for the carbon.

BackgroundStuttering may include repetition of words in whole or part, difficulty saying words, and elongated pauses in speech. Approximately 5% of children stutter for a period lasting 6 months or more. Most of those children stop stuttering as they approach adulthood, but the condition persists in approximately 1% of adults. The cause of stuttering is unknown. Adults who stutter face substantial burdens in many aspects of their lives. Stutterers may choose not to pursue meaningful employment opportunities, may not be hired for positions they seek, or may be denied promotions or positive performance evaluations. Stuttering can cause physical tension from fear of speaking. Social challenges arise when a person who stutters is seen as less capable or of lower intelligence than fluent speakers. Stuttering causes emotional difficulties through the frustration and embarrassment that disfluent speakers feel. Stutterers may experience a general loss of self-esteem and personal satisfaction in life. Speech therapy is the primary intervention for stuttering. Medications have been investigated as treatments for stuttering, but no medication has been identified that has widespread effectiveness.Case presentationA 60-year-old white non-Hispanic woman who had been a near lifelong stutterer was prescribed ketamine for an unrelated condition and experienced an almost immediate resolution of her stuttering.ConclusionsMany possible pharmacological treatments for stuttering have been studied. Some medications appear to be effective in some patients; some appear to be more generally effective but have negative side effects. No reporting in relevant literature has addressed a possible role for ketamine in stuttering treatment. On the basis of this case report, research on the effect of ketamine on stuttering would be useful. Any effective treatment for stuttering would have a significant positive effect on quality of life for persons who stutter.

The article analyses the publicity of the activities of the statutory organization in social networks. The theoretical part discusses the concept of activity publicity, the concept of social networks, introduces the activities of the Lithuanian army and the regulation of its publicity. Empirical qualitative research revealed that the activities of the Duke Margiris Infantry Battalion are publicized on Facebook and Instagram. The collected public posts were analysed according to three criteria: the number of likes, comments and shares of the posts. According to the content of the posts, four themes were distinguished: "combat training", "commemorations/formations", "civic education" and "visits". The obtained research results imply recommendations: in the case of the possibility of providing more visual content in the posts; to use the functions of the social network Facebook to create messages about upcoming events ("event", "story") and to remind about upcoming events by sharing messages. Keywords: publicity of military activities, publicity channels and means, social networks, publicity content and methods, feedback.

To facilitate safer prescribing of opioids and other drugs, nearly all states operate prescription monitoring programs (PMPs), which collect and share data on controlled substance dispensing. Policy makers have sought to raise clinicians' engagement with these programs but lack evidence on effective interventions. Working with the Minnesota Prescription Monitoring Program, we conducted a randomized trial to assess whether letters to clinicians increased program use and decreased risky coprescribing of opioids with benzodiazepines or gabapentinoids. In March 2021 we randomly assigned 12,000 coprescribers to either a control arm or one of three study arms sent differing letters. The respective letters highlighted a new mandate to check the PMP before prescribing, provided information about coprescribing risks with a list of coprescribed patients, or contained both messages combined. Letters highlighting the mandate alone or along with coprescribing information increased PMP search rates by 4.5 and 4.0percentage points, respectively, with no significant effect on coprescribing. These letters also increased PMP account-holding rates among clinicians. Effects persisted for at least eight months. The letter with only coprescribing information had no detected effects on key outcomes. Our results support the use of simple letter interventions as evidence-based tools to increase PMP engagement and potentially facilitate better-informed prescribing.

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks forced families to decide the safest and most effective learning environments for their children because of the virus's threat to health and life. Hence, because of the nationwide school closure, policymakers have raised concerns about the missing children cases-those who have not enrolled in school at all because of the pandemic. The present study investigates whether there is a difference in the school enrollment during the pre-COVID-19 period, COVID-19 period, and vaccine rollout period. We employed the U.S. Current Population Survey (CPS), covering January 2020 to May 2021, while we use both the logistic and multinomial regression models for the empirical analysis. Our results showed that school enrollment is lower during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the Pre-COVID-19 period. Other results showed that school enrollment is higher since vaccine rollout compared to the COVID-19 period. A possible explanation for this could be that families consider the vaccine the safe path to enrolling their children in school. We also found that school enrollment varies significantly across race and ethnic groups.
