A chronic apical abscess is an endodontic condition commonly characterized by the presence of a notable sinus tract through which pus periodically discharges. In general, these cases can be considered ‘straight forward’ to diagnose but on some occasions, diagnosis can be challenging. Any misdiagnosis can compromise the treatment approach for the patient and lead to adverse outcomes such as unnecessary biopsies or referrals. Therefore, clinicians should follow a meticulous treatment approach consisting of appropriate diagnostic measures to establish the correct diagnosis and treatment pathway. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Misdiagnosis of challenging cases can result in inappropriate treatment, especially where odontogenic infections mimic precancerous/cancerous skin lesions.

Mixed-use development (MXD) is crucial for urban planning and travel. The COVID-19 outbreak had a significant impact on travel behaviour and MXD projects worldwide, particularly in high-income countries. However, limited studies have explored the predictors of MXD usage and travel patterns in low- and middle-income countries, including Malaysia, and how these events were affected by COVID-19. Using the Rowley and extended Hopenbrouwer and Louw models, this study investigates the travel patterns within MXD premises, their associated factors, and residents’ perspectives of internal and external trips before and during COVID-19 in Klang Valley, Malaysia. A mixed-method study was conducted by using a validated survey and performing a structured interview with MXD residents. A total of 134 and 52 respondents participated in the survey and qualitative interviews, respectively. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, logistic regression models, and thematic analysis. A significantly higher proportion of MXD respondents engaged in external travel compared to internal travel before and during COVID-19. Before COVID-19, external travel was significantly higher among younger residents, government servants, higher-income earners, and those who owned a car and had recently moved to MXD areas. The odds of internal travel were significantly higher among private-sector employees, students, and low-income earners. During the pandemic, external travel frequency was significantly higher among male residents, older residents, government servants, high-income earners, and those with multiple vehicles. Residents with more parking lots tended to travel less internally compared to those with fewer parking lots allocated. Qualitative analyses revealed that cost-saving, convenience and comfort, social lifestyle, health and well-being, and green environment were the factors that shaped MXD residents’ perceived benefits of trip internalisation. Meanwhile, the barriers to internal trips included the lack of infrastructure, poor management, lifestyle activities/individual factors, and environmental factors. The recommended strategies to reduce external trips were to ensure diversified services and accessibility, inclusiveness in planning activities, promoting social interaction, and work-from-home policies. These findings reflect the strategies that can be incorporated to reduce external trips generated by MXD and enhance effective traffic management.

ABSTRACT This paper shares results from a social design-based experiment in which four secondary mathematics teachers pursued the design question, How can mathematics teachers design for civic learning in mathematics classrooms? Following one design cycle, we asked the empirical question, What activities did civic mathematics teaching entail? Mirra & Garcia’s (2023) conceptualization of just civic worldbuilding framed our analysis of teaching artifacts, fieldnotes, journal entries, meetings and interviews. Findings describe five activities of mathematics teaching for just civic worlds. Examples and reflections illuminate the efforts such work may demand and the possibilities it may afford.

Severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD) is the combined effect of experiencing homelessness, substance use and repeat offending. People experiencing SMD have high burden of physical and mental health issues. Oral health is one of the most common health problems in people experiencing SMD which interacts with substance use, smoking, and unhealthy diet to create a cycle of harm and disadvantage. However, burden of these conditions is worsened by poor access to health services. This study aimed to identify pathways to improve engagement and access to health interventions, for oral health, substance and alcohol use, smoking and diet. Using a qualitative methodology, interviews/focus groups were conducted with: (a) people experiencing SMD in Newcastle Upon Tyne/Gateshead; and (b) frontline staff, volunteer workers, policy makers and commissioners from London, Plymouth and Newcastle Upon Tyne/Gateshead. Data was analysed iteratively using thematic analysis. Twenty-eight people experiencing SMD (age range: 27-65 years; 21% females) and 78 service providers (age range: 28-72 years, 63% females) were interviewed or included in focus groups. Data were organized into two overarching factors: barriers to accessing health interventions and improving access to health interventions. Barriers included: wider disadvantages of people experiencing SMD leading to low priority for support for oral health and associated health behaviours, psychosocial factors, waiting period and physical space. Factors that improved access to interventions included: positive relationships between service provider and person experiencing SMD, including a support worker, location of services and outreach services. The findings suggest the need for flexibility in offering services for oral health and related health behaviours for people experiencing SMD. Training health care providers and co-developing services with people with lived experience of SMD can help prevent (re)stigmatization. Systems-based approach to address factors on an environmental, organizational, inter-personal and individual level is needed. The results from this study could be extrapolated to other health intervention such as vaccinations and sexual and reproductive health.

This study aims to use data provided by the Virginia Department of Public Health to illustrate the changes in trends of the total cases in COVID-19 since they were first recorded in the state. Each of the 93 counties in the state has its COVID-19 dashboard to help inform decision makers and the public of spatial and temporal counts of total cases. Our analysis shows the differences in the relative spread between the counties and compares the evolution in time using Bayesian conditional autoregressive framework. The models are built under the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and Moran spatial correlations. In addition, Moran's time series modeling techniques were applied to understand the incidence rates. The findings discussed may serve as a template for other studies of similar nature.

This showed a comprehensive study on the mangrove crab industry in Bataan, Philippines. Mangrove crab growers (35%) were between 51-60 years old, mostly married with 5-7 family members. Farming was highest (30.77%) between 6-10 years while some were farming for 40 years (1.29%). Monthly income has strong positive correlation (r=676) with production area. Scylla serrata, S. olivacea, and S. tranquebarica were identified using traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). Results revealed 69.57% of the pond used for farming was 1-10 ha employing the polyculture method. About 52.17% used coin-sized crablets while 39.13% fly-sized. Annual production was less than a ton for 46.38% growers while 1.45% have >5 tons. Annual income showed a strong positive correlation (r=0.886 and r=0.815) with production area and annual production, showing a significant difference (p<001). Harvested crabs were marketed live in Orani Port. Grading and pricing were due to sex, weight, and characteristics. Problems include the implementation of FAO 264 s. 2020, weather, market practice, pandemic, and high rejections. Men and women play significant roles where laborious were perceived to be men’s sphere while less laborious and financial aspects were for women.

Abstract Among the taxonomic family of porpoises (Phocoenidae), mating behavior in nature has been described in detail only for the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). We review this species’ unusual mating habits based on a study in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, and present new data from across its range in the North Pacific, North Atlantic, Black Sea, and managed care. Results confirm the male’s unique laterality oriented solely to the female’s left side as contact occurred both in nature and managed care. The male’s high-energy sexual approach to the female led to splashy aerial behavior at the surface in nature. Drone footage provided observations of subsurface mating behavior, including evidence of male–male sexual interactions and a male calf interacting sexually with its mother. Harbor porpoise reproductive anatomy is also presented, with new comparative information on the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). The harbor porpoise’s lateralized behavior and anatomy (i.e., long asymmetric penis, large testes size, convoluted asymmetric female reproductive tract) may have coevolved. We note gaps in knowledge, suitable platforms for future investigations (drones, bridges, boats, and coastal cliffs), and what is known about mating behavior in other porpoise species, including hybridization. We conclude with conservation implications for porpoises and encourage researchers to recognize and report mating behavior as baseline data valuable for establishing marine conservation areas.

Inclusion in higher education has taken centre stage in Australian universities in the last decade. In this paper, we analyse inclusive practice involving international students with disabilities from non - English speaking backgrounds enrolled in one University in Australia. Our theory of inclusion articulates fundamental differences among different kinds of inclusive practice and cultures, resulting in a typology including the medical model, social constructivism, the social model of disability and the concept of 'W hole Schooling '. Each kind of theory calls on different instructional supports, policy, attitudes, and good practice in inclusive education. In doing so, we aim to inform policy and models for best practice to maximise the education al experiences of students with disabilities, and indeed, all students. The implications of the findings for lecturers, teachers and support staff implementing strategic and successful inclusion for international students with additional needs are discusse d which prompt many other unanswered research questions. These questions may challenge researchers, lecturers, staff and policy makers interested in making higher education accessible to all and in doing so, make a contribution to the discourse of inclusio n in challenging perceptions of student deficit.

Leadership development experiences within librarianship are immensely popular. The informal critiques that are leveled at these programs, however, claim that they serve only to reinforce the status quo and that they do not address the real issues affecting our profession, particularly those relating to racial and gender diversity. In order to critically determine the value of these programs, I examine them through the lens of critical race theory. Elements of critical race theory are illustrated through details solicited from the program coordinators and from available information on program websites and in professional literature. While these leadership programs frame themselves as creating transformational leaders, focusing on team-building, collaboration, and motivation, their curriculum and structure perpetuate the status quo in relation to librarianship's existing structural biases. There are steps that can be taken, however, to better develop diverse leaders with our professional values in mind.
