Optimum dose of aspirin for patients with heart disease
A 10-year study on a human subject showed that the optimum dose of aspirin to treat coronary heart disease was about 49 mg daily. If the dose was increased to 56 mg, insignificant and reversible hematuria would occur. If the dose was decreased to 40.5 mg, inadequate efficacy would result. No kidney problem was observed as long as the dose did not exceed 56 mg. These findings are a good supplement to the FDA’s recent new guidance on how to use this medication safely to prevent stroke and heart attack.
Read moreOnline Learning Strategies and Practical Tips for Nuclear Medicine Instructors.
As nuclear medicine instructors shift toward online learning, it is imperative to use instructional strategies that align with the program's theoretic foundation. Online learning does not require a complete course redesign, though attention should be paid to careful course design to support learning, promote student engagement, and facilitate competency development. Instructional strategies such as discussions, group projects, and gaming elements support the construction of knowledge and the development of self-efficacy and competency while keeping students engaged in the content. Intentional display and formatting such as content chunking and a variety of materials can also support student learning.
Read moreGist from the list: discussions from the SASH listserv
The listserv of the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) provides opportunities for members to explore classic and emerging topics in the fields of sexual health and problematic sexual behavior. This inaugural column highlights recent discussions about solosexuality as an emerging label, a consideration of jealousy in the context of chronic betrayal, and a comparison of perspectives on the understanding and resolution of shame.

In this paper we present an efficient encryption system based on Compressive Sensing, without the additional computational cost of a separate encryption protocol, when applied to indoor location estimation problems. The breakthrough of the method is the use of the weakly encrypted measurement matrices which are generated when solving the optimization problem to localize the source. It must be noted that in this method an alternative key is required to secure the system.
Read moreA Distributed Joint Channel and Slot Assignment for Convergecast in Wireless Sensor Networks
In this work, we study raw convergecast in multichannel wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where the sink may be equipped with multiple radio interfaces. We propose Wave, a simple and efficient distributed joint channel and time slot assignment. We evaluate the number of slots needed to complete the convergecast by simulation and compare it to the optimal schedule and to a centralized solution.

Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Compliance Through Community Education
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the nation. The incidence is especially high in the state of Louisiana, where the number of male deaths caused by colon cancer is higher than that in any other state in America. The excessive number of deaths may be attributed to decreased compliance with current screening recommendations. CRC screening, like most preventative health measures, is largely at the mercy of primary care physicians (PCPs) who must recommend or refer the patient before the preventative health measure can be completed. The project removed PCP dependence and made the patient an active participant in his or her care through a community-focused education program. The program provided instruction on CRC prevention and screening. Educational avenues used included flyer distribution, newspaper advertisements, radio advertisements, and publicly displayed posters. Patients were able to use the contact information provided to make an appointment with a provider, and insurance prerequisites, such as PCP referrals, were handled by the office staff. At the conclusion of the program, a statistical analysis showed increased compliance as a result of the educational program. A positive correlation was found between the intent of the education and the number of respondents.
Read moreSynthesis and Anti-HIV Evaluation of 3′-Triazolo Nucleosides
A series of hitherto unknown 3′-α-[1,2,3]-substituted triazolo-2′,3′-dideoxypyrimidine nucleoside analogues of the anti-HIV 3′-azido-3′-deoxythymidine (AZT) were synthesized through catalyzed alkyne-azide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (Huisgen reaction). Those 3′-[1,2,3]-triazolo analogues bearing an azido alkyl chain were evaluated for their anti-HIV activity against HIV-1 in primary human lymphocytes as well as for their cytotoxicity in different cells. None of them inhibit HIV replication (EC50 > 20 μM); two of them were converted to their triphosphate form to evaluate their HIV-RT inhibition.
Read moreImproving Comprehension of Capital Sentencing Instructions
Previous research has demonstrated that judicial instructions on the law are not well understood by jurors tasked with applying the law to the facts of a case. The past research has also shown that jurors are often confused by the instructions used in the sentencing phase of a capital trial. The current research tested the effectiveness of a “debunking” approach to improving juror misunderstanding associated with capital sentencing instructions. Participants were randomly assigned to hear either Florida's pattern instructions used in the penalty phase of a capital trial or the same instructions with additional statements that mentioned and refuted misconceptions thought to be associated with established areas of miscomprehension. After participants heard the judicial instructions, their understanding of the law on capital punishment decision making was assessed. The results revealed that comprehension was higher for participants exposed to the bias-refutation statements than for participants who were exposed to only the pattern instructions.
