Sardinia has an integrated water reserve system comprising more than 30 dams on rivers. Built in the last century, these dams have become part of the modern landscape, while also continuing to affect sediment transport. The trapping of sediment has hindered its natural movement towards the coastal system ever since, thereby reducing the supply of sediment to sandy beaches and increasing their vulnerability to coastal erosion. On the other hand, the reservoirs' capacity to store water is also impacted. These two issues are of particular concern in the context of climate change. For this reason, the present study addresses both issues by proposing a methodology to assess the feasibility of using reservoir sediment as a source of material for beach replenishment. The Autonomous Region of Sardinia and its regional partners are currently developing this methodology as part of the DesirMED project, which is funded through the HORIZON-MISS-2022-CLIMA-01 call, which addresses climate change adaptation through a nature-based approach. The methodology was designed and structured in the following steps: the development of a database of sediment characteristics and reservoir locations; the application of multi-criteria analysis using a defined set of indicators; the selection of case studies where to conduct technical visits involving measurements and sampling; a technical feasibility study on sediment-sand compatibility; and the assessment of the results from the perspective of potential sediment reuse for beach replenishment. This study is part of the ongoing process of implementing adaptation measures. The Autonomous Region of Sardinia incorporates this process into its Regional Adaptation to Climate Change Strategy, which was adopted in 2019 and recently revised. Although the methodology is still in its early stages, it will contribute to improving the resilience of coastal communities and the implementation of adaptation measures at a local level.

The Turtle Dove is a regular migratory species widely distributed in Italy, though the information on its abundance in each Italian region is modest; thus, action plans have been implemented to improve its conservation. This is a preliminary study meant to provide information on the distribution and abundance of the TD in Apulia. We analyzed data collected during 2019–2023 within the Farmland Bird Index (FBI) project, whose sampling design was intensified to achieve more homogeneous coverage of the region. The survey method was based on unlimited-distance point counts lasting 10 min. Counts were carried out between 15 May and 15 June of every year, beginning from dawn until 12:00 AM, with each station visited once. A total of 211 TD birds were recorded across 147-point counts. The MaxEnt analysis showed that olive orchards, needle-leaved woodlands, and evergreen broad-leaved woodlands had a positive effect on species occurrence, whereas winter precipitation had a negative effect. The total estimate of pairs fell within the range 47.14–66. The estimated density for TD in Apulia was 0.87–1.16 birds/km2, while that of pairs was 0.69–0.97/km2. By relating the estimated densities to the area suitable for the species’ presence, the abundance of TD was estimated at approximately 17,337–24,303 birds.

This study introduces a hybrid methodological approach for personalised clinical decision support, integrating SHACL-based deterministic constraints with Bayesian probabilistic models. The primary goal is to validate the model and demonstrate the benefits of combining encoded clinical knowledge with probabilistic uncertainties in managing complex therapeutic scenarios. The framework was applied to recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in postmenopausal patients, a clinical context marked by high frequency, treatment challenges, and potential conflicts among therapeutic guidelines. Realistic simulated case studies were developed, encompassing both simple clinical profiles and complex situations, such as patients with antibiotic resistance. Each profile was modelled in RDF/Turtle, enabling semantic representation of clinical features and therapeutic rules. The system automatically calculates success and failure probabilities for different therapeutic scenarios, dynamically adapting them based on follow-up data. This allows clinicians to assess not only the initial therapy choice (Case study no. 1) but also the potential addition of supplementary interventions during treatment (Case study no. 2). Results highlight that the proposed hybrid SHACL–Bayesian framework enables tightly coupled deterministic–probabilistic reasoning, where SHACL constraints define the admissible clinical decisions and Bayesian inference operates within this validated space. Compared to deterministic or probabilistic approaches, the combined framework more effectively handles uncertainty, guideline conflicts, and temporal updates. The scientific contribution lies in showing that this integration enhances decision support for recurrent UTIs in postmenopausal patients, providing clinically consistent, transparent, and adaptive therapeutic recommendations aligned with the patient’s evolving condition.

The importance of biosensors based on optical fiber (OF) technology is increasing due to their high sensitivity and compatibility with minimally invasive real-time diagnostics and enormous potentials for in vivo biopsies. This study investigates the technical aspects behind integrating Lab-on-Tip optrodes within microfluidic channels, which is propaedeutic for guidelines setting towards their correct connection with minimally invasive clinical tools such as needles, catheters and nanoendoscopes. Here, as proof of concept, we investigated the integration of a plasmonic Metasurface-assisted Lab-on-Tip optrode, realized onto a single mode OF tip (OFMT), into a T-shaped microfluidic chip for the detection of a clinically relevant target molecule as the breast cancer biomarker receptor tyrosine protein kinase (ErbB2). The biosensor response to different ErbB2 concentrations (1–1000 ng/mL) was analyzed under controlled flow conditions. Experiments demonstrated a strong dependence of the detection performance on the probe position within the microfluidic channel, with increased performance frustration as the distance of the tip from the center is reduced. These findings, confirmed by numerical modeling, revealed an inverse relationship between the flow velocity and the biosensor performance. This relationship was further corroborated by additional experiments demonstrating that higher flow rates reduce the target molecule capability to correctly recognize the bioreceptor immobilized on the sensor surface due to the shorter analyte-probe interaction time. In summary, the present study highlights the importance of a multi-aspect microfluidics design considering local flow conditions for optimal probe placement, providing valuable guidelines for improving detection capabilities of microfluidic assisted Lab-on-Tip biosensing platforms for biomedical applications. • A Lab-on-Tip plasmonic optrode was integrated in a microfluidic chip to detect ErbB2. • The probe position in the channel and the flow rate affect the detection performance. • The biosensor response to different ErbB2 concentrations (1–1000 ng/mL) was analyzed.

The third stage of labour occurs between the birth of the foetus and the expulsion of the placenta. A major complication during this stage is postpartum hemorrhage, which poses a significant concern for maternal health. To mitigate this risk, active management strategies have emerged, raising concerns about the safety of physiological management following a physiological birth. Midwives play a vital role in ensuring a safe third stage of labour by minimizing medical intervention and preventing postpartum hemorrhage. This scoping review aims to map the evidence on midwifery practices that support a physiological third stage of labour. We conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. We retrieved articles from PUBMED, PsycINFO (via EBSCO), CINAHL (via EBSCO), LILACS, SCOPUS, ClinicalTrials.gov, Open Science Framework, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, Cochrane Library, and JBI. The search yielded 2190 articles, with 1779 remaining after duplicates were removed. Screening identified 80 articles for review; 63 were excluded, resulting in 17 articles defining key findings. Two articles contributed to a theoretical framework for a physiological approach. Ten articles further discussed how midwives provide care during this stage to maintain normalcy. Three articles debated the safety of expectant management for low-risk women, while three studies also suggested new risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage. Midwifery care during the physiological third stage of labour must balance safety and trust in the woman's body. More research is needed to assess expectant management in home births and midwifery-led units, with a focus on individual needs and the long-term impacts of a physiological approach.

Sustainability is a recently defined concept. It deserves careful investigation within historical studies. Criteria related to the current sustainability concept can be historically contextualized within multidisciplinary approaches. Some practices, involving relationships between natural and human’ systems, have been developed, preserved, and in some cases enriched, through centuries. Sustainable practices have been expressed through history at different scales: individual and small groups, community, state, and macro-regional ones. These different scales have interacted with each other over time, with a mutual enrichment. Studying these various scales requires interactions between different disciplines. Teaching historical perspective about sustainability has interesting potentials: it encourages students to better contextualize sustainability in the past and makes students aware of their responsibility for environment protection, and of the value of citizenship.

What does it mean to approach the Philosophy of Education through the lens of “risk”? How do Desire and Fantasy interplay within this educational dynamic? The essay seeks to address the aforementioned questions by engaging with the thought of J.R.R. Tolkien. Moreover, it explores the relationship between the deepest desires of the human spirit and the Secondary World of Middle-earth, sub-created by the Oxford Professor.

The volume collects the proceedings of the conference “Places of Worship and Ritual Practices in Ancient Oderzo”, held at the Eno Bellis Archaeological Museum in Oderzo on 24 June 2024. The various contributions investigate, across a diachronic span of more than one thousand years, from the 9th century BC to the 8th century AD, the multiple forms of evidence, artefacts, monuments, and cult areas of the ancient city. Through the analysis of monumental buildings and epigraphic documents, of ceramics and small bronze figurines, and finally of chronicle sources, it has been possible to outline an overall—albeit fragmentary—picture of the different testimonies relating to the sacred sphere in both its public and private dimensions, while also engaging with comparisons and insights drawn from the wider Veneto and Cisalpine contexts. The resulting framework highlights remarkable elements of continuity in the sacred use of certain spaces on the Opitergian hill.

The sacred complex in Oderzo, comprised a temple building, reconstructed as a peripteros sine postico , and a three-sided porticus. The plan of the temple and the three-sided porticus were deduced from the trench dug for the removal of the walls. The former, which is hypothesised to have had six columns on the façade and nine on the sides, had bases, columns, and capitals made of Vicenza stone, whereas the latter only used this material for the capitals and trabeation, as the columns were made of stucco-covered bricks. The temple’s chronology can be placed between 40 and 30 BC.
