A mixed integer maximization problem involving several additional constraints defined with both a lower and an upper bound is considered. It is assumed that one of such constraints is more restrictive than the others. As it can be seen as a resource window constraint, it defines the so-called window-constrained problem. From a bi-objective perspective, a 2-phase algorithm, called BORWin, is devised. It stands for Bi-Objective Relaxation for Window-constrained problems. The first phase is generic for any window-constrained problem and provides a family of upper bounds based on a bi-objective relaxation of the additional constraints. It is shown that the latter bounds strongly relate to the Lagrangian dual bounds. The second phase is derived for a variant involving a graph structure, namely the window-constrained longest-path problem on an acyclic graph. The aim is to take advantage of the upper bounds to devise an efficient label extension algorithm. It is shown that complementary upper bounds could be derived to further improve performance in some special cases. A typical example is when the additional constraints have special knapsack structures. This is the case for the Hydro-Unit Commitment problem with a single plant (1-HUC). From numerical experiments for the 1-HUC, BOR-Win appears to be very efficient compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

Three new species of gobiid fish of Luciogobius Gill, 1859 have been recently discovered in Taiwan. Luciogobius chiaojinensis sp. nov. is found and collected mainly from Keelung, northern Taiwan. It can be distinguished from other congeneric species by the following combination of features: (1) second dorsal fin rays: I/10 and anal fin rays I/11; (2) pectoral fin rays modally 13 and with one upper, short free soft ray; (3) vertebral count: 20 + 21 = 41; and (4) specific coloration: head and body with small tiny blackish brown spots. Head with densely-set small blackish brown spots in male; second dorsal fin brown and darker on lower half; pectoral fin base on upper 1/2 region with round melanophores; and pectoral fin membrane mostly spotless. Luciogobius huatungensis sp. nov. is found and collected mainly from Hualien and Taitung Counties in eastern Taiwan. It can be well distinguished from other congeneric species by the following combination of features: (1) second dorsal fin modally I/15 and anal fin I/15; (2) pectoral fin rays 14 and with 4 upper, free soft rays and 1 lower free rays; (3) vertebral count: 17 + 22 = 39; and (4) specific coloration: body brown with minute creamy yellow round spots; head and body with small brown spots; belly creamy yellow with fewer brown spots; second dorsal fin with tiny white marks; and pectoral fin with several round melanophores, most membrane with brown marks. Luciogobius newtaipeiensis sp. nov. is found and collected mainly from New Taipei City in northern Taiwan. It can be well distinguished from other congeneric species by the following combination of features: (1) second dorsal fin rays: I/11 and anal fin rays I/12; (2) pectoral fin rays modally 18 and with 1 upper free soft ray; (3) vertebral count: 16 + 20 = 36; (4) a dermal projection on posterior part of eye; and (5) specific coloration: head and body with small tiny brownish black spots; second dorsal rays light brown; and pectoral fin base with many small melanophores, fin membrane with melanophores on basal region. A diagnostic key for all six nominal species of Taiwan and the Matsu Islands will be provided in this paper.

Two new freshwater gobies of Rhinogobius were discovered from Taiwan. They are fluvial species belonging to R. rubromaculatus complex. The new species, Rhinogobius baborinisanensis n. sp. which is collected from northern Taiwan can be well distinguished from all other congeners by the unique combination of the following features: (1) fins: second dorsal fin rays modally I/8; anal fin rays I/7; pectoral fin rays modally 17; (2) squamation: longitudinal scale series 32-34 (modally 33); perdorsal scales usually 13-14; scale series from origin of first dorsal fin to upper pectoral fin origin modally 10; (3) vertebral count 27; (4) rear edge of mouth merely extending to or slightly beyond vertical of anterior margin of pupil in male and (5) its own specific colouration. Another new species, Rhinogobius macromaculatus n. sp. which is collected from southern Taiwan can be well distinguished from all other congeners by the unique combination of the following features: (1) fins: second dorsal fin rays modally I/8; anal fin rays I/7; pectoral fin rays modally 15; (2) squamation: longitudinal scale series 27-28 (modally 28); perdorsal scales usually 14-15; scale series from origin of first dorsal fin to upper pectoral fin origin modally 8; (3) vertebral count 27; (4) rear edge of mouth extending slightly beyond vertical of anterior margin of pupil in male and (5) its own specific colouration. The brief comparison and discussion of morphological differentiation from congeners would be also addressed.

A taxonomic review is given for the gobiid genus Fusigobius, known for its cryptic and inconspicuous body coloration, from the waters of Taiwan. Six species of Fusigobius have been formally confirmed from Taiwan, including four nominal species (F. duospilus, F. humeralis, F. inframaculatus, and F. neophytus), a newly recorded F. melacron, and a new species, Fusigobius taipinensis n. sp., recently collected from the South China Sea and southern Taiwan. The new species is morphologically close to F. duospilus, but can be clearly distinguished by several important coloration features on the first dorsal fin or body. Phylogenetic analysis and species delimitation inferred from partial sequences of the mtDNA ND5 gene support F. taipinensis as a valid discrete species and F. melacron as the plesiomorphic state for Fusigobius.

Herein, we present a new record of Matsubaraea fusiformis in western Taiwan waters; the discovery was based on its morphological characters. Five M. fusiformis samples were collected (August 2022) from the offshore waters (depth: 35.3-49.6 m) of Changhua County, western Taiwan, by using commercial bottom trawlers. A total of 5 genera and 10 species of the family Percophidae have been found in the waters of southwestern and northeastern Taiwan, primarily in the sandy deep-sea regions. This paper presents the first record of M. fusiformis in Taiwan. The findings also reveal that M. fusiformis is predominantly found in shallow waters.

Gimbal is a system that provides locking and tracking of the seeker on the target in missiles and increases the angle of view with its mobility in two axes. In this study, stabilization of a two-axis gimbal system used in the missile was carried out. In gimbal stabilization, adaptive controllers are preferred instead of classical controllers due to unbalance, cross-coupling, and unmeasurable disturbances. A Self Tuning PID controller based on Fuzzy Logic was developed for axis controls in the stabilization algorithm. Thanks to this controller, which works with the principle of choosing the most appropriate coefficient at every step, it was possible to control with less than 3% errors in the tests performed with the flight simulator. In addition, a PID controller whose coefficients are optimized with Particle Swarm Optimization is designed for comparison purposes. In experimental studies, it was seen that PID with adjustable coefficients gave better results than the fixed PID.

Trichoderma spp. are widely distributed worldwide. Members of Trichoderma have been shown to play a significant role in the biocontrol of plant disease, as well as the industrial production of enzymes and antibiotics, and as a mycoparasite of edible fungi. In this study, a new species, Trichoderma orarium, is introduced and illustrated. This new species was isolated from coastal soil in Northeastern Taiwan and identified based on morphological characteristics and multi-gene sequence analyses of three loci (ITS, tef1, and rpb2). The phylogenetic analyses revealed that T. orarium belongs to the Harzianum clade. Distinctions between the new species and its close relatives are discussed in detail.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to Cartus and Marshall’s (1) commentary on our paper (2). First, we would like to thank them for their kind feedback and their excellent discussion of numerous structural factors that impact the opioid epidemic and, in particular, the suboptimal and inequitable treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). We wholeheartedly agree that upstream changes at the national, state, local, and clinical levels (like the recent repeal of the X-waiver requirement for buprenorphine prescribing) are sorely needed to improve access to and quality of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatments to all who could benefit. Cartus and Marshall raise an interesting set of issues regarding the potential trade-offs between investing in technical sophistication and public health considerations. We are sympathetic to the concern that the broader social context, policy environment, and general public health relevance may sometimes be considered secondary to the technical goals of a particular analysis. However, we do not see technical sophistication and public health relevance as a zero-sum game. In fact, we believe that technical sophistication can, in certain cases, even help clarify public health relevance.

Among the numerous technological advances sought in order to facilitate human exploration and habitation outside of earth’s atmosphere, solutions and innovations are needed for processing local resources to support sustainable and long duration space missions. Such in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) is aimed at reducing the payload mass during launch and eliminate the need for ground support for long-term missions and ultimately space colonization. One particular need for habitation and deep space exploration is the continuous supply of oxygen for life support and for propellants in the form of liquid oxygen. As mission duration is extended, the availability of a consistent supply of oxygen will become critical. The entire lunar surface is covered by regolith which is approximately 45% oxygen by mass, making it a very large reservoir. However, this oxygen is in the form of metal and mineral oxides. NASA thus recognizes the need to develop approaches to utilize this oxygen and material resource.Faraday Technology Inc. and RoCo Global are addressing this unique challenge by demonstrating the feasibility of an efficient ionic liquid-assisted electrochemical system for oxygen recovery from SiO2 that can be employed on lunar surfaces for oxygen extraction from lunar regolith. Accordingly, Faraday and RoCo Global have successfully: 1) Developed a scalable bifluoride based IL with reduced process complexity that can enable direct solubilization of SiO2; 2) Developed an experimental approach utilizing an electrochemical Liquid-Liquid-Solid (LLS) process [i],[ii] [iii] [iv] for the extraction of oxygen and deposition of Si from the solubilized SiO2 in the bifluoride based IL; 3) Demonstrated feasibility to recover oxygen and electrodeposit Si from SiO2 solubilized in bifluoride based IL electrolyte; 4) Demonstrated feasibility of reutilizing IL electrolyte for multiple SiO2 solubilization cycles; 5) Prepared a preliminary semi-continuous alpha-scale design (Figure 1).
