Hybrid solar cells combining organic and inorganic materials offer potential for low cost, stable photovoltaics, but their optical and charge transport properties need further study. To characterize the optical properties and photovoltaic performance of an inverted P3HT:PCBM/ZnO hybrid solar cell with a laminated silver electrode. The device was fabricated using spray pyrolysis for ZnO, spin-coating for P3HT:PCBM and PEDOT:PSS, and lamination for the silver electrode. Optical properties were assessed via UV-Vis spectroscopy, and photovoltaic performance was evaluated under AM 1.5G illumination. P3HT:PCBM showed strong visible absorption (400–650 nm), while ZnO exhibited UV absorption and visible transparency. The device achieved Isc of 8.54 × 10⁻⁴ A, Voc of 0.578 V, FF of 0.68, and Pmax of 3.35 × 10⁻⁴ W. The inverted architecture demonstrates efficient light harvesting and charge extraction, with potential for cost-effective solar cells.

David Carlgren's insider narrative documents in graphic details the lived experiences of his family and himself, and as importantly, presents the positive and negative experiences of a few colleagues in Wuhan, China during the pandemic. The author discusses issues of stress, tolerance, friendship, compassion and survival. With deep sensitivity David Carlgren explains: firstly, the coping and survival strategies adopted by his family. Secondly, a colleague's compassionate neighbours who deliberately intervened and ameliorated her situation. Thirdly, another colleague's stresses at school when he was forced to set up and take down, every day, the online teaching-learning technology, as well as to scan and upload the learning materials for a whole floor of classes. Fourthly was Carlgran's explicit description of the types and impacts of the stresses encountered by a third colleague.

More than a hundred thousand documented orphaned oil and gas wells are known to exist in the United States, with potentially millions remaining undocumented. Due to funding shortfalls, many orphaned wells remain unplugged and continue to emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Drone-based methane emission measurements can help prioritize mitigation efforts for orphaned wells and aid in locating undocumented orphaned wells, which are wells with unknown locations and conditions. In collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Orphan Well Program, we will present the results of drone-based methane emission measurements across four regions in Pennsylvania with a high likelihood of containing undocumented orphaned wells. We will share our insights on the potential for detecting methane emissions using drone-based tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), an emerging technology for methane monitoring in the oil and gas sector. Additionally, this work explores the foundation of a screening method for providing first-order estimates of methane emission rates at orphaned well sites. We will compare the methane measurements with potential well locations identified using drone-based magnetometry data, historical maps, LiDAR, and atmospheric data. Our results will be helpful for prioritizing plugging and remediation for the hundreds of thousands, and potentially millions, orphaned wells across the US and the world.

In modern educational institutions, smart cards are essential to bring feasibility and portability. The project will focus on developing a digital ID card system that integrates an RFID-based attendance management system with a student prepaid wallet. The RFID attendance system is intended to improve the process of tracking students’ attendance by automating them using radio frequency identification technology thus enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of keeping records of their presence while reducing possible errors in manual operations [1] [2]. On top of maintaining student attendance, this digital ID card will also act as a prepaid wallet allowing pupils to transact within the school campus through credit money hence, they need not carry cash when paying fines for late submissions, and library fees among other campus expenses [3]. It reduces administrative burden and improves the overall student experience by providing an all-inclusive user-friendly solution that supports both monitoring class attendance and making financial transactions in schools. It is worth noting that this single digital ID card encompasses these aspects implying that smart technologies are increasingly being used to simplify and enhance various campus activities.

Oil sands development in the Athabasca and Cold Lake oil sands regions of Alberta has raised concerns about potential impacts to groundwater and groundwater dependent ecosystems. This review summarizes the current state of understanding as to how oil sands mining and in situ activities can affect groundwater systems using a stressor-mechanism-response framework. Specific oil sands activities and practices are reviewed, and where possible, described in terms of how they can impact hydraulic head, the hydraulic properties of aquifers, recharge and transport of constituents of concern and linked to observed or potential impacts to groundwater quantity and quality. Groundwater is an important component of the water balance in boreal ecosystems, and specific vulnerabilities related to development are reviewed, including water use, landscape disturbance, groundwater withdrawals, tailings pond seepage, deep well disposal and thermal impacts. Knowledge gaps include lack of baseline data and monitoring of the quantity and quality of groundwater discharge to rivers, lakes and wetlands. One key monitoring challenge is attribution of hydrogeologic responses to specific oil sands stressors given the range of other natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to their variability. Quantitative groundwater exchange mapping, regional-scale isotope mass balance assessment, and broader incorporation of isotopic and geochemical tracers for fingerprinting water sources and incorporation of Indigenous Knowledge appear promising for improved effectiveness of monitoring.
