This article explores the role played by legacy media in the pervasive situation where far-right activists highly politicize migrant crimes on social media. Focusing on particular crimes they consider indicative of a state’s failure to secure borders and protect its citizens, they utilize social media platforms to mobilize and garner political and media attention. However, little is known about the dynamics of influence between far-right activism on social media and legacy media in the process of politicizing migrant crimes. To overcome the analytical and methodological limitations of current research, we have developed a computational method to capture the public discussion that took place in France around a single event – the murder of a young teenager in Paris in October 2022. Applying an event identification algorithm to a vast corpus of Twitter data has enabled us to analyze the dynamics of public discussion held in various arenas, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This article’s main argument is that legacy media act as a “moral compass” vis-à-vis far-right mobilizations that politicize migrant crimes on social media. While they were unable to influence the volume of attention that social media users pay to this murder, the French legacy media have contributed to setting limits to the form and spread of politicization by the far right on social media. More specifically, they were able to influence the attention paid to the facts that serve as the basis for discussion on social media and to steer that discussion toward questioning the relevance of politicizing the crime.

ABSTRACT This article analyzes the evolution of income inequality in France between 1970 and 2019 and breaks down these variations into the respective contributions of changes in family compositions, occupations, individual earnings, taxes and social benefits, using a semi‐parametric decomposition approach by sub‐periods. Earnings and retirement pensions had a strong contribution to the decline in inequality during the 1970s and 1980s, before a neutralization and even a recent reversal of the impact. Changes in family compositions, particularly the rise of single‐parent households, led to a moderate but continuous rise in inequality. The strong increase in female employment during that period did not lead to a uniform fall in inequality of household equivalized income, partly because of homogamy. Overall, direct taxes and social benefits have been more and more inequality‐decreasing across the period, although this trend was temporarily reversed during the first decade of the 21st century.

IntroductionArtificial intelligence systems (AIS) powered by big data (BD) are more and more common in the healthcare sector and many anticipate that they will have a substantial effect on population health. Facing the disruptive potential of these transformations, there is a need to keep the pace with the ethical reflection accompanying the uses of AIS and the BD systems enabling such innovations.MethodsTo carry out this task, we conducted a scoping review of the ethical issues of AIS and BD, in population health, based on 243 scholarly articles.ResultsOur results show the explosion of publications on the subject in recent years. Our qualitative analysis of this literature highlights the potential issues of AIS and BD on the three components of population health: (1) the health outcomes and their distribution in the population and between populations; (2) the patterns of health determinants; (3) the policies and interventions developed to connect the previous components.DiscussionOur conclusions show the uncertainty of the positive outcomes of these technologies and their potential for unequal distribution. Authors consider that AIS and BD will affect determinants of health either in their understanding and by transforming the structure of these determinants. At last, this review points that the policies and interventions developed to attain population health goals will have to answer to numerous ethical expectations. This review offers a comprehensive mapping of ethical issues raised by the uses of AIS in the global field of population health.

ABSTRACT Declining turnout rates and political disengagement have spurred many proposals to reform contemporary democracies. Some proposals aim at electoral participation, while others seek to create alternative non-voting forms of participation in politics. This article explores a third route, where elections are used to foster democratic non-voting engagement: that is, engagement in elections, but not as voters. We propose that society actively seek to engage citizens and resident non-citizens, who are either by choice or by law currently non-voters, to participate in the different administrative aspects of elections as poll workers. Our proposal concerns paid positions for which people volunteer, rather than unpaid positions into which people are drafted, whether they want to or not. Hence, this article proposes a novel form of electoral participation that is voluntary, open, and appropriate for those unable or not yet ready to vote.
