Populations with complex chronic conditions (CCCs), especially those reliant on medical technology, face disproportionate risks during disasters. Medicaid enrollees make up a large portion of these vulnerable populations, yet states often lack rapid identification systems to inform disaster planning. Florida Medicaid developed a claims-based method to identify enrollees with CCCs, including those dependent on medical technology, to support emergency preparedness and response activities. Using the Florida Medicaid Management Information System, the team applied a validated diagnostic and procedural code framework to classify enrollees into 12 CCC categories. Data were analyzed by age, geography, and technology dependence. Health plans received real-time reports before and after hurricanes in 2022 to 2024. Among 4.4 million enrollees, 7.2% had CCCs, and 18.2% of those were technology dependent. Geographic mapping showed higher concentrations in rural and coastal areas prone to disasters. Health plans reported using the data to contact members and coordinate services during hurricane recovery. This effort demonstrates the feasibility and utility of applying claims data to support disaster management. Other states may adapt this approach to improve emergency response and continuity of care for Medicaid's most medically vulnerable populations.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the psychological effects of wooden frames and interiors in open-plan offices (OPO) and to understand the evaluation structure associated with wooden materials. A combination of quantitative subjective evaluations and qualitative interviews was conducted, utilizing the Evaluation Grid Method (EGM) to understand participants’ evaluation structure and criteria for wooden OPO. The study involved 20 Japanese participants who evaluated 16 computer-generated images of OPO, designed with varying factors related to wood placement, material, and spatial elements. Findings revealed that OPO utilizing wooden columns and beams significantly enhances users’ willingness to use the office compared to those without. Notably, the combination of wood’s placement and other spatial elements is critical rather than the mere quantity of wood. Furthermore, the study reveals that factors such as age and gender affect the willingness to use OPO suggesting that different user attributes may lead to varying perceptions of comfort and privacy. The results indicated that while the evaluation criteria for assessing spaces were generally shared across participants, the relative importance of specific items varied depending on user attributes. This study offers valuable insights into the complex evaluation structures related to wooden office spaces, contributing to the growing field of research on wooden interiors.

The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between children’s likes and dislikes, their feelings about school lunch, and their eating habits, as well as to examine how school lunch guidance should be provided to children who ‘always leave school lunches’. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted from July to October 2023 with 1,965 children in grades one to six in Chiba, Tokyo, and Ibaraki prefectures. The results of the analysis showed that children who always leave their school lunch thought that they should not have likes and dislikes compared to the children who had experienced finishing their school lunch. The results also showed that the children who always left food at school did not look forward to the school lunch, but were worried and anxious about it. The contents of their worries and anxieties were “liking or disliking the food” and “not being able to eat the food because the quantity is too large”. Therefore, for the children who always leave their school lunch, it is necessary to provide them with guidance so that they can find enjoyment in their school lunch, rather than worry or have anxiety about it.

This paper examines the transformation of higher education through the lens of Eduinformatics and the Japanese concept Shu-Ha-Ri. It analyzes the current state of universities, characterized by rigid academic divisions and external pressures, and proposes a path through interdisciplinary fusion and the introduction of absolute perspectives. The paper then envisions a future state 100 years from now that transcends constraints of time, place, and culture. It argues that a "Ri" part of universities creates new values through the fusion of Japanese cultural elements with global diversity by maximizing creativity and sensibility, and actively engages with society to solve real-world problems. The study concludes thatwhile the path to transformation is not unimpeded, it is essential for the future relevance and impact of higher education.

Abstract Nationwide, the number of elder abuse reports made to the police has increased. However, it was unclear if these reports resulted in an increase in cases substantiated as actual “elder abuse” by the police? This study used data from fiscal year 2019 in Matsudo City, analyzing a total of 171 elder abuse cases for this study. Among these, 73 cases were reported by the police, accounting for 42.7% of the total cases, and the perpetrators lived with the victims, indicating children were the most common perpetrators of 35 cases (47.9%), followed by spouse of 31 cases (42.5%), and others of 7 cases (9.6%). Out of the police-reported 73 cases, 60 cases (82.2%) were not substantiated as elder abuse under the Act on Prevention of Elder Abuse, and only 13 cases (17.8%) were substantiated as elder abuse. This outcome led us to the conclusion that the increase in police reports does not necessarily indicate an increase in the cases substantiated as “elder abuse,” and highlighted the limited scope of definitions of Elder Abuse in the Act. For example, despite cohabitation, the elder abuse cases where even actual elder violence occurs and requires hospitalization, are not considered as “elder abuse” if there is no caregiving relationship and many of such elder violence cases become to be called “situation-based violence”. It is strongly suggested that the definition of elder abuse of cohabitants with no caregiver relationships should be also included as “elder abuse” in accordance with WHO guidelines.
