Arctic sea ice is changing rapidly. Its retreat significantly impacts Arctic heat fluxes, ocean currents, and ecology, warranting the continuous monitoring and tracking of changes to sea ice extent and thickness. L-band (1.4 GHz) microwave radiometry can measure sea ice thickness for thin ice ≤1 m, depending on salinity and temperature. The sensitivity to thin ice makes L-band measurements complementary to radar altimetry which can measure the thickness of thick ice with reasonable accuracy. During the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition, we deployed the mobile ARIEL L-band radiometer on the sea ice floe next to research vessel Polarstern to study the sensitivity of the L-band to different sea ice parameters (e.g., snow and ice thickness, ice salinity, ice and snow temperature), with the aim to help improve/validate current microwave emission models. Our results show that ARIEL is sensitive to different types of surfaces (ice, leads, and melt ponds) and to ice thickness up to 70 cm when the salinity of the sea ice is low. The measurements can be reproduced with the Burke emission model when in situ snow and ice measurements for the autumn transects were used as model input. The correlation coefficient for modeled Burke brightness temperature (BT) versus ARIEL measurements was approximately 0.8. The discrepancy between the measurements and the model is about 5%, depending on the transects analyzed. No explicit dependence on snow depth was detected. We present a qualitative analysis for thin ice observations on leads. We have demonstrated that the ARIEL radiometer is an excellent field instrument for quantifying the sensitivity of L-band radiometry to ice and snow parameters, leading to insights that can enhance sea ice thickness retrievals from L-band radiometer satellites (such as Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)) and improve estimates of Arctic sea-ice thickness changes on a larger scale.
Read moreOptical system for the measurement of the surface topography of additively manufactured parts
Additive manufacturing (AM) is now regularly used for customised fabrication of parts with complex shapes and geometries. However, the large range of relevant scales, high slopes, step-like transitions, undercuts, alternation between dark and overly bright regions and other complex features present on the surfaces, in particular of metal additive parts, represent a significant challenge for current optical measurement technologies. Measuring surfaces with such complex features requires high numerical aperture (NA) optics, and state-of-the-art systems commonly include optics that can only reliably acquire surface topographies over a small field of view (FOV), typically tens or hundreds of micrometers. Such measurements are often insufficient for practical applications. Here, we present an optical system that features a large NA ( > 0.3) and a wide FOV 2.9×2.9 mm, capable of measuring AM parts in a single measurement, without the need for lateral stitching to increase the FOV. The proposed system exhibits optical properties that provide facility for large-field, high-resolution measurement of industrially-produced additively manufactured parts.

Leiomyoma (LMA) of the external auditory canal (EAC) is a benign tumor of the smooth muscle first described by Petschenik AJ and Linstrom CJ in 1996[1]. The involvement of head and neck regions is rare, while LMAs are common in the uterus and alimentary tract . In the head and neck regions they are more common in females (3.5:1). We present the case of a patient affected by a vascular LMA/angioleiomyoma of the external auditory canal. Clinical and histopathological findings are described and discussed. As far as we know, only nine cases of LMA of the EAC have been reported in the literature to date.

We report a computational microscopy technique for 3D surface measurements with an extended depth-of-field. Using two independent cameras, it enables fast and robust extended-range topographic surface measurements from only a single pair-shot.
Read moreCombining Commercially Available Active and Passive Sensors Into a Millimeter-Wave Imager for Concealed Weapon Detection
Current imaging technology for concealed weapon detection in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) and terahertz ranges is traditionally limited to a single type of sensor. In this paper, a system combining active and passive mm-wave sensors along with a depth-sensing camera is presented. These sensors are combined at a hardware stage (being integrated into a single imager) as well as at software level (via simultaneous processing and sensor fusion). The resulting images of the individual sensors are combined via image fusion techniques, using a consumer-grade optical sensor as an image noise-removing tool and highlighting the threat over the subject's body. Each sensor is able to compensate some of the imaging limitations of the others, thus offering better overall detection capabilities. Furthermore, the final imager has been formed by combining commercially available devices, which provides a reduced-cost alternative to custom-made equipment.
Read more3D label free bio-transfer standards
Two kinds of 3D label free Bio-Transfer-Standards (BTS) have been further developed at the University of Helsinki (UH). The first one, NanoRuler, is a staircase BTS featuring eight fatty acid bilayers which allows vertical calibration in the range of 5 to 40 nm. The second one, NanoStar, is a V-shaped BTS featuring two 5 nm tall bilayers that overlap at 10° angle. This standard enables the determination of the Instrument Transfer Function (ITF). A stability test was conducted on the BTSs, during which the standards were stored in laboratory conditions, and were profiled each week. Profiling was done using a custom-built Scanning White Light Interferometer (SWLI). The stability of NanoStar was ± 0.3 nm, and of NanoRuler ± 0.5 nm to ± 2.5 nm. The BTSs maintained their specified properties for at least six months and therefore allow vertical calibration and ITF determination. In addition, changes in surface morphology of one NanoRuler subjected to water immersion are presented. This paper reports intermediate findings during an ongoing stability test that will run for 24 months.
