Motor insurance can use telematics data not only to understand individual driving style but also to implement innovative coaching strategies that feed back to the drivers, through an app, the aggregated information extracted from the data. The purpose is to encourage an improvement in their driving style. A precondition for this improvement is that drivers are digitally engaged, that is, they interact with the app. This paper proposes a narrow understanding of the term engagement, referring to users’ interactions with the app. This interaction is also a behavior producing specific data that can be tracked and used by insurance companies. Based on the empirical investigation of the dataset of a company selling a telematics motor insurance policy, our research investigates if there is a correlation between engagement with the app and improvement of driving style. The analysis distinguishes different groups of users with different driving abilities, and takes into account time differences. Our findings contribute to clarifying the methodological challenges that must be addressed when exploring engagement and coaching effectiveness in proactive insurance policies. We conclude by discussing the possibility and difficulties of tracking and using second-order behavioral data related to policyholder engagement with the app.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm has emerged as a transformative force, revolutionizing industrial processes by integrating advanced wireless technologies into traditional procedures to enhance their efficiency. The importance of this paradigm shift has produced a massive, yet heterogeneous, proliferation of scientific contributions. However, these works lack a standardized and cohesive characterization of the IIoT framework coming from different entities, like the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) or the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA), resulting in divergent perspectives and potentially hindering interoperability. To bridge this gap, this article offers a characterization of (i) the main IIoT application domains, (ii) their respective requirements, (iii) the principal technological gaps existing in the current literature, and, most importantly, (iv) we propose a systematic approach for assessing and addressing the identified research challenges. Therefore, this article serves as a roadmap for future research endeavors, promoting a unified vision of the IIoT paradigm and fostering collaborative efforts to advance the field.

In the digital era, where seamless connectivity is the lifeblood of modern society, broadband internet service providers face the dual challenge of meeting the ever-increasing demands of consumers while ensuring consistent and reliable Quality of Service (QoS). The quest for superior customer satisfaction and the reduction of churn rates have become paramount in an industry marked by intense competition. To face these pressing industry challenges, this paper presents an innovative Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI) algorithm designed for the dual purpose of predicting customer churn due to poor network quality while providing an elucidation of the underlying causal factors. The algorithm's deployment equips providers with a toolkit to take informed and proactive actions, thus enabling enhanced service quality management and customer retention strategies.

This paper introduces the concept of Distributed Intelligent integrated Sensing and Communications (DISAC), which expands the capabilities of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) towards distributed architectures. Additionally, the DISAC framework integrates novel waveform design with new semantic and goal-oriented communication paradigms, enabling ISAC technologies to transition from traditional data fusion to the semantic composition of diverse sensed and shared information. This progress facilitates large-scale, energy-efficient support for high-precision spatial-temporal processing, optimizing ISAC resource utilization, and enabling effective multi-modal sensing performance. Addressing key challenges such as efficient data management and connect-compute resource utilization, 6G-DISAC stands to revolutionize applications in diverse sectors including transportation, healthcare, and industrial automation. Our study encapsulates the project's vision, methodologies, and potential impact, marking a significant stride towards a more connected and intelligent world.

Although data on outdoor gamma radiation are available for many countries, they have generally been obtained with measurements performed in undisturbed environments instead of in urban areas where most of the population lives. Only one large national survey, with on-site measurements in urban areas, has been identified worldwide, probably due to high costs (e.g., personnel and instrumentation) and difficulties in selecting measuring points. A campaign of outdoor gamma radiation measurements has been carried out in the entire Italian territory. All measurement points were selected at the infrastructures of an Italian telecommunications company as representatives of all the possible situations of outdoor exposure to gamma radiation for population in urban areas. Ten replicates of portable gamma (X) detectors carried out all the measurements. Approximately 4,000 measurements have been performed. They are distributed across 2,901 Italian municipalities, accounting for 75% of the Italian population. The national population-weighted mean of the gamma ambient dose equivalent rate (ADER) is 117 nSv h-1, and it ranges from 62 to 208 nSv h-1 and from 40 to 227 nSv h-1 for 21 regions and 107 provinces, respectively. The average variability at the municipal level, in terms of the coefficient of variation (CV) is 21%, ranging from 3 to 84%. The impact of land coverage and the distance from a building on the outdoor gamma radiation level was assessed with complementary measurements, leading to differences ranging from -40 to 50% and to 50%, respectively. A representative campaign of outdoor gamma dose rate measurements has been performed in Italy, only in urban areas, to assess the exposure effect due to outdoor gamma radiation on the population. It is the largest national campaign in urban areas worldwide, with a total of 3,876 on-site measurements. The land coverage and the distance from surrounding buildings were recognized to strongly affect outdoor gamma radiation levels, leading to high variability within small areas. The collaboration with a company that owns a network of facilities on a national territory as dense as the residing population made this survey feasible and affordable. Other countries might adopt this methodology to conduct national surveys in urban environments.

In recent years, the possibility to use underwater telecommunication cables to perform scientific measurements has been investigated, either by inserting custom instrumentation in the optical repeaters [1] or by using the fibers present in the cables as a sensor [2,3]. In this work we will focus on the SOP (State Of Polarization) technique. Change in the SOP, as transmitted through telecommunication cable, originates when intrinsic or externally induced birefringence in the fiber results in a different phase velocity for different polarization states. Measurements of the change in optical properties of the cable could, in principle, give information on its mechanical perturbation through photoelastic effect [4]. However, the birefringence is affected also by many other effects [5,6] that can be applied on any part of the fiber, thus posing an issue to disentangle the different sources. SOP data are routinely acquired on commercial telecommunication cables, using dedicated hardware, to monitor and increase the quality of data transmission, without interfering with the cable’s commercial purposes, being readily available on many existing telecommunication infrastructures. Data analysed in this paper have been acquired on the TISparkle MedNautilus cables [7]; the system is composed of two underwater telecommunication cables connecting  central and eastern Mediterranean. At the ends of both cables, the SOP data and the Jones matrix for the optical system are acquired using a standard Subsea Line Terminal Equipment produced by Infinera [8].  Following an approach similar to the one used by Jones [9] for spatial derivatives of Jones matrix and Szafraniec &  Baney [10] for frequency derivatives, we developed a novel technique, based on the infinitesimal generator of temporal translations. This analysis allows to evaluate a three dimensional complex vector whose components are related to the time variation of the attenuation and the phase delay. We will show some preliminary results obtained using this technique to analyse a set of earthquakes occurred during 2023, focusing in particular on the ones that took place in Turkey on 2/6/2023. Even if the SOP technique has many potential noise sources that could limit its sensitivity and its study is in an early stage, its development is appealing because it can take advantage of the existing underwater telecommunication cables laid on the ocean floor during the last decades without interefering with their normal use for telecommunication.   [1] G. The paper proposes a Holographic Quantum Theory of Consciousness (HQTOC) that aims to connect human consciousness to the manifestation of observed natural laws and phenomena. The paper is very ambitious but well motivated and well written, so it deserves particular attention. On the other side, it doesn't provide any experimental proof or evidence of the theoretical analysis. This is the main challenge of this paper (and another one of the same category): justify the conjectures with experimental validations. In general, there is rich prior art referring to holographic models of consciousness. Two well-known examples are reported below, but there are also many others.
