Ethics and the Good Soldier
Building on extensive, internationally leading empirical research conducted by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, this book explores the soldier as a virtuous professional through a close examination of soldiers’ character and ethical reasoning. Starting from the view that virtues such as courage, honesty, loyalty and integrity are core to being a professional soldier, the book draws on insights from British soldiers at three stages of their career – officer cadets (at Sandhurst), junior lieutenants/captains (attending the Junior Officer Tactical Awareness Course), and senior captains (participating in the Captain’s Warfare Course). Drawing upon the Jubilee Centre’s Soldiers of Character study, the book explores soldiers’ character in the professional domain. Including clear implications for practice and research, this is essential reading for all those interested in the character of soldiers in both a professional and academic setting.
Read moreBuffering masculinity’s impact on binge drinking: the femininity effect
Background Across most developmental periods, males tend to drink at a higher frequency and at a higher intensity than females. In identifying the mechanism responsible for these differences, biological factors have been a prevalent focus; however, gender expression is also highlighted. The purpose of this paper is to decipher how differences in binge drinking are attributed to sex differences and gendered traits. Method Using data from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (ADD Health) (n = 8,882), we conducted a multiple group moderation analysis to examine how differences in biological sex and gender roles in emerging adulthood predicted binge drinking. Results We found that binge drinking in emerging adulthood was most strongly predicted by high levels of masculinity and low levels of femininity in emerging adulthood. As masculinity decreased, alcohol use decreased. Femininity significantly moderated masculinity’s association with binge drinking, primarily when masculinity was high, and this did not vary across sex after controlling for gender roles. Conclusions Our findings expand sex and gender research surrounding alcohol use. For both males and females, the higher the masculinity the more frequent alcohol use, an effect of which was buffered by higher levels of femininity. Clinicians should take into consideration gender role ascription of their clients when determining the risk profile during assessment.

Abstract Density functional theory and exchange-correlation approximation are used to determine structural electronic and optical characteristics of Al1-xMgxSb (x =0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75). We employ generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) to calculate structural properties as lattice parameters, bulk moduli, and pressure derivatives are in good agreement with the experimental data. The GGA-PBE algorithm determines the density of states and band structure for electronic characteristics. These calculations show the optical inactivity and indirect (Γ-L) bandgap of the binary compound AlSb. When a variable percentage in AlSb raises Mg concentration, the bandgap decreases and switches from indirect bandgap (Γ-L) to direct bandgap) and the material starts to function optically. The optical properties of Mg-doped AlSb as reflectivity, optical conductivity, reflectivity, refractive index, dielectric constant and energy loss are significantly improved. The designated material is considered a gateway for optoelectronic and photonic applications.
Read moreA Highly Efficient 18–40 GHz Linear Power Amplifier in 40-nm GaN for mm-Wave 5G
A medium-power, highly-efficient broadband linear power amplifier (PA) is designed in a 40-nm GaN technology that covers the key 5G FR2 band of 24-40 GHz. Load-pull simulations suggest better device broadband performance and peak power-added-efficiency (PAE) around V DD = 4-6 V. Measurement data corroborates the simulations and this PA achieves a small-signal 3-dB bandwidth (BW) of 18.0-40.3 GHz, with max. PAE/P SAT of 42.1%/18.6 dBm at 28 GHz, and 26.0%/17.2 dBm at 38 GHz at V DD = 4 V. When tested with a 9 MHz × 100 MHz 256-quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) 5G new radio (NR) signal, it achieves an adjacent-channel-leakage-ratio (ACLR) of -27 dBc with P OUT, AVG /PAE of 11.3 dBm/13.9% at 28 GHz. When compared with state-of-the-art broadband PAs, it achieves the best S 21 3-dB BW with excellent peak PAE and linearity. This work also reports the best PAE for broadband medium-power millimeter-wave GaN PA at P SAT ~ 20 dBm.
Read moreHow You Watch Television News Matters: A Panel Analysis of Second Screening and Political Learning from the News
ABSTRACT This study draws from cognitive theories of learning to examine the role of different forms of television news viewing in political knowledge. Data from two-wave panel data reveal that performing an additional task unrelated to television news, or task-irrelevant second screening, is related to detrimental cognitive outcomes. Unlike past research, performing an additional task relevant to television news, or task-relevant second screening, does not contribute to political learning. Television news exposure is positively related to political learning. Theoretical implications of the results are discussed.

Read moreEffects of Motor-level Electrical Stimulations on Postprandial Glucose Levels in Non-Diabetic Young Individuals
<p><strong>Background and objectives:</strong> Motor-level electrical stimulation (MES) has been shown to improve glucose tolerance and glucose uptake in both animals and humans. Recently, MES has been shown to improve the blood glucose control in people with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). There are several types of MES applied in physical therapy clinics. However, it is unknown what types of MES optimally decrease postprandial glucose level. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of three different types of MES on postprandial glucose levels in healthy non-diabetic subjects. </p>
Read moreExercise by playing active video gaming in overweight and obese children.
Background: Active video gaming (AVG) has been suggested as a way of combating sedentary lifestyle in children. The objective was to investigate the effects of exercise by playing AVG on fitness and motivation for physical activity in children with overweight or obesity. Methods: Fourteen children participated in an AVG program using Xbox Kinect and Nintendo Wii for one hour per session, two sessions per week for eight weeks. Three evaluations were performed at the beginning of the 1st, 9th and 16th sessions. The outcome measures include 1) physical fitness: vital signs, body mass index, body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility; 2) psychological assessments: Motives for Physical Activity Measure- Revised (MPAM-R) and Situational Motivational Scale (SIMS). In addition, real-time heart rates (HR) were monitored to assess exercise exertion throughout each session. Results: No statistically significant changes were found in each component of physical and psychological assessments. MPAM-R was shown to have a good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s alpha>0.8). Average and peak HR demonstrated the majority of subjects were able to achieve moderate or vigorous intensity of exercise during most AVG sessions. Conclusions: Eight-week AVG program was not sufficient to show changes in fitness or motivation for physical activity in overweight and obese children. However, AVG might be an alternative and engaging way to reach moderate or vigorous intensity of exercise for this population. Future research may focus on a larger sample size and more frequent and longer training program to determine if benefits of AVG exist for overweight and obese children.
Read moreThe Mechanisms Whereby Double Helical Offset-Toothed Synchronous Belt Produces Lower Noise Than Straight-Toothed Synchronous Belt: A Theoretical Investigation
Recent experimental investigations demonstrate that the level of noise generated by double helical synchronous belt (DHSB) is lower than that by straight-toothed synchronous belt (STSB). The present study is to theoretically elucidate the mechanisms whereby DHSB produces lower noise. In the theoretical analysis, a model DHSB is divided into several parallel narrow DHSBs with equal width. Let each narrow DHSB’s helical angle be 0° so each narrow DHSB becomes a narrow STSB. The theory of the one-dimensional sound field is then applied to obtain the standing wave solution of impact sound pressure. The sum of impact sound pressures by the narrow STSBs derived from one pair (left- and right-handed) of helical teeth of the model DHSB represents transmission impact noise. Computational results reveal that the power of impact sound at the damping-frequency decreases as the helical tooth’s angle increases. In addition, the impact sound power decreases as the degree of tooth’s offset of a double helical offset-toothed synchronous belt (DHOTSB) increases. Impact sound power is in the following order from high to low: STSB » DHSB > DHOTSB. In experimental investigations, the noise was in the following order from high to low: STSB » DHSB > DHOTSB, consistent with theoretical prediction. Also, the sound power at high frequency was markedly attenuated in DHSB or DHOTSB, the impact noise is the major sources of noise. Thus, the reduced noise in DHSB and DHOTSB can be explained by the one-dimensional standing wave sound field theory.
