The Effect of a Novel Weight-Supported Kinetic Chain Resistance Training Program on Proximal Core Muscular Endurance, Trunk-to-Arm Muscular Power, and Bat Swing Speed.
Palmer, TG, and McCabe, M. The effect of a novel weight-supported kinetic chain resistance training program on proximal core muscular endurance, trunk-to-arm muscular power, and bat swing speed. J Strength Cond Res 37(11): 2130-2140, 2023-Muscular stability and muscular power at the proximal core segments of the pelvis, spine, and trunk are essential attributes in maximizing bat swing speed in the sport of softball. Weight-supported kinetic chain resistance training (WsKC) is a novel closed kinetic chain technique that provides synergistic multiplanar stressors to the proximal core segments via the lower and upper extremities while limiting joint compression and sheer forces throughout the kinetic chain. The aim of this study was to assess the effect a 7-week preseason WsKC program would have on an isometric muscular endurance plank, trunk-to-arm peak muscular power (TAPP), trunk-to-arm peak velocity (TAPV), and bat swing speed (BSS) compared with a traditional isotonic weight resistance training program. Twenty-seven female high school softball players (age = 16 years, height = 167.6 cm, body mass = 62.86 kg) were assigned in a blocked randomization to one of 2 groups: a standing weight-supported kinetic chain resistance training (WsT) group (n = 13) or a pseudo-control traditional isotonic training (TT) group (n = 14). The WsT group had significant improvements (p < 0.05) for the isometric endurance plank (p = 0.001), TAPP (p = 0.002), TAPV (p = 0.001), and BSS (p = 0.02) compared with the TT group. The training effect size (ES) was large for the WsT group for all variables (ES = 1.0-7.4) and small to moderate for a majority of the TT variables (ES = 0.06-0.47). The simultaneous improvement in the isometric endurance plank, trunk-to-arm rotations, and BSS indicates that the WsKC contributed to subsequent improvements in BSS in high school softball players.
Read moreModeling the cortical response elicited by wrist manipulation via a nonlinear delay differential embedding
Abstract Regarding motor processes, modeling healthy people’s brains is essential to understand people with motor impairments’ brain activity. However, little research has been undertaken when external forces disturb limbs, having limited information on physiological pathways. Therefore, in this paper, a nonlinear delay differential embedding model is used to estimate the brain response elicited by externally controlled wrist movement in healthy individuals. The aim is to improve the understanding of the relationship between a controlled wrist movement and the generated cortical activity of healthy people, helping to disclose the underlying mechanisms and physiological relationships involved in the motor event. To evaluate the model, a public database from the Delft University of Technology is used, which contains electroencephalographic recordings of ten healthy subjects while wrist movement was externally provoked by a robotic system. In this work, the cortical response related to movement is identified via Independent Component Analysis and estimated based on a nonlinear delay differential embedding model. To validate the model, a cross-validation analysis is performed, achieving 90.21% ± 4.46% Variance Accounted For, and Correlation 95.14% ± 2.31%. The proposed methodology allows to select the model degree, to estimate a general predominant operation mode of the cortical response elicited by wrist movement. The obtained results revealed two facts that had not previously been reported: the movement’s acceleration affects the cortical response, and a common delayed activity is shared among subjects. Going forward, this approach may pave the way for further analysis of various treatments effectiveness for people with upper limbs motor impairments.
Read moreThe Great Resignation and Its Cure
This paper explores the reasons behind the Great Resignation phenomenon, which has seen millions of employees leaving their jobs due to burnout, lack of growth opportunities, and pandemic-related concerns. This sudden shift in mindset will be explained by looking at the trends causing this worker exodus. The paper examines the importance of the employee experience and how it impacts worker retention. It provides insights into the need for a positive start to an employee’s journey, highlighting the importance of improving the onboarding process. Additionally, the paper underscores the significance of an employee-centric model for fostering passion, loyalty, and emotional connections. Furthermore, it highlights the critical role of employee engagement in addressing emotional needs in promoting a healthy work environment and preventing burnout, ultimately improving worker satisfaction and retention. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes the need for employers to invest in their employees’ well-being to maintain a healthy and happy workforce.
Read moreBowenian Family Systems Theory: Approaches and Applications
Biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy proposed that the biological concept of a system was a useful framework for studying the phenomena of all sciences. It was at this time the concept of general systems theory was born. General systems theory or systems theory is a conceptual framework that moves beyond the reductionistic and mechanistic tradition in science to focus on linear cause and effect relationships. The family systems view goes beyond static concepts to take account of the temporal quality of life and the omnipresence of change. The Bowen family systems theory is one of the most comprehensive explanations for the development of psychological problems from a systemic and multigenerational perspective. This chapter discusses the conceptual basis for Bowenian systems theory and its applications. The major constructs of Bowen family system theory are differentiation of self, nuclear family emotional process, multigenerational transmission process, family projection process, interlocking triangles, emotional cutoff, sibling position, and societal emotional process.
Read moreWhat Parents Tell Their Post-Secondary Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities about Money
The purpose of this study was to learn what parents of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) communicate in terms of financial literacy (skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors); and how their financial literacy perceptions compare with their student’s. This research builds on prior parental socialization of finances to include persons with IDD. Data for this study included a survey which was adapted from Jorgensen (2007) and administered to both parents and their post-secondary student. A focus group consisting of a smaller sample of parents was used to learn how parents encouraged their child’s acquisition of financial knowledge, attributes, behaviors, and influences. This study extends research on parent-child communication about money to the special education population and offers practical implications for communicating financial matters.
Read moreOverall justice and supervisor conscientiousness: Implications for ethical leadership and employee self‐esteem
Abstract Research on organizational justice demonstrates its consistent effect on employee organization‐based self‐esteem. However, little research considers how organizational justice affects employee organization‐based self‐esteem and when the relationship is attenuated. In an effort to extend the research regarding this particular relationship, we draw on social cognitive theory to suggest that supervisors’ perceptions of overall organizational justice trickle down to impact employees’ organization‐based self‐esteem. Specifically, we propose that supervisory ethical leadership mediates this relationship. We also examine the moderating influence of supervisor conscientiousness on this proposed trickle‐down effect. We analyze these relationships in a multisource field study and find support for the mediating effect of supervisory ethical leadership and the proposed moderated mediation model. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
Read moreBank Dividend-cuts and the Stock Market Reaction Around the Great Recession
We study investors’ reaction to dividend decreases and omissions in the US banking industry during the Great Recession of 2007 and 2008 and compare it to the reaction in the years before and after the crisis. Conducting standard event study approach, we find that investors didn’t react negatively to dividend-cuts in the years preceding the financial crisis and during the crisis as they did in the years following the crisis. Our results imply a shift in the perception of dividend cuts during the financial crisis. Dividend cuts were not perceived as a negative signal about the financial health of the banking firms during the Great Recession.
Read moreThe Influence of Religion on the Marketing Concept: A Case of Halal Culture
Religion is a major cultural variable that can affect the purchase behavior of consumers. This non-empirical paper examines how the Muslim concept of Halal influences consumers in the Middle East and Muslims all over the world. The paper reviews brief history of the marketing concept and consumer behavior. It then explains the role that cultural generally plays in the consumer decision making and marketing concept. The paper explains the basic concepts behind Halal culture. The paper makes recommendations to marketers for how to reach consumers who seek products that are Halal certified and Shariah-compliant. It also discusses how to compete with these marketers.
