Recent advancements in deep learning have shown that multimodal inference can be particularly useful in tasks like autonomous driving, human health, and production line monitoring. However, deploying state-of-the-art multimodal models in distributed IoT systems poses unique challenges since the sensor data from low-cost edge devices can get corrupted, lost, or delayed before reaching the cloud. These problems are magnified in the presence of asymmetric data generation rates from different sensor modalities, wireless network dynamics, or unpredictable sensor behavior, leading to either increased latency or degradation in inference accuracy, which could affect the normal operation of the system with severe consequences like human injury or car accident. In this paper, we propose PATCH, a framework of speculative inference to adapt to these complex scenarios. PATCH serves as a plug-in module in the existing multimodal models, and it enables speculative inference of these off-the-shelf deep learning models. PATCH consists of 1) a Masked-AutoEncoder-based cross-modality imputation module to impute missing data using partially-available sensor data, 2) a lightweight feature pair ranking module that effectively limits the searching space for the optimal imputation configuration with low computation overhead, and 3) a data alignment module that aligns multimodal heterogeneous data streams without using accurate timestamp or external synchronization mechanisms. We implement PATCH in nine popular multimodal models using five public datasets and one self-collected dataset. The experimental results show that PATCH achieves up to 13% mean accuracy improvement over the state-of-art method while only using 10% of training data and reducing the training overhead by 73% compared to the original cost of retraining the model.

This research adopted a quasi-experimental design in which purposive sampling was used. The research site was the National Cheng Kung University Hospital Dou-Liou Branch dementia daycare center, from which 30 patients with dementia who were ≥ 65 years old were recruited. During the research, participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control groups. During the research, eight participants withdrew due to personal reasons; 22 participants completed the research. The research spanned 12 weeks, from 21 September to 31 December 2017. The experimental group included four male dementia patients (76.25 ± 6.61 years), of which three had mild dementia and one had moderate dementia; and seven female dementia patients (80.14 ± 6.38 years), of which four had mild dementia and three had moderate dementia. In the control group, there were five seniors male dementia patients (80.8 ± 1.6 years), of which three had mild dementia and two had moderate dementia; and six female dementia patients (82.83 ± 8.93 years), of which three had mild dementia and three had moderate dementia. The present research employed an interactive drum-beating somatosensory game, “Taiko no Tatsujin”. Results showed that differences in the experimental group across the 12-week program reached statistical significance (p =.046*). The Jamar dynamometer was used to measure the grip strength of both hands of the participants; the experimental group showed significant improvement across the 12 weeks (p≦.001***). The Minnesota manual dexterity test was used to measure bilateral hand coordination of the participants. Though there were significant differences in the performance between the experimental and control groups (p≦.001***), both groups improved the time taken to complete the test across the 12 weeks.

Smartphones have become popular in recent years. With the development of various smartphone applications (apps), smartphone functions are becoming increasingly advanced. However, functions are limited by the area of the smartphone screen, meaning that some apps are less convenient to operate. App designers can change the interface of an app to enhance operational convenience. This study presents a new music operating interface design concept and designed a smartphone app. This concept is an electronic instrument or music operating interface (such as for application in smartphones, flat panel computers, or other electronic products). The right hand plays the melody, and the left hand adjusts the octave. The app may also simply play all of the notes of a given song to facilitate user learning. This study recruited several participants to use the designed app and note its advantages and disadvantages, which can serve as a reference for revised designs.

Because of the numerous types of world heritage that currently exist, UNESCO divides them into four categories: cultural heritage, natural heritage, cultural and heritage dual heritage, and cultural landscape heritage. Taiwan’s Cultural Heritage Preservation Act stipulates that tangible cultural heritage include monuments, historic buildings, commemorative buildings, groups of buildings, archaeological sites, historic sites, cultural landscapes, antiquities, and natural landscapes and natural monuments, whereas its intangible cultural heritage include traditional performing arts, traditional craftsmanship, oral traditions and expressions, folklore, and traditional knowledge and practices. Because of continually increasing tasks associated with cultural heritage management, this study adopted research approaches such as compilation of relevant laws and regulations and interviews with managers to identify their needs in managing cultural heritage. This study posited that digital-based information management is highly conductive to managing cultural heritage. Thus, a dynamic cultural heritage management system was developed to help managers perform various heritage preservation and management-related work. The proposed system enables digitalizing related documents to facilitate their preservation, provides diversified functions that allow managers to conduct remote interactive management, and enables establishing various economical monitoring functions. This study used actual cases of cultural heritage preservation and input data collected from various management tasks into the proposed management system. Accordingly, the management functions of the system were verified successfully. The proposed system can help relevant departments manage cultural heritage, diminish the occurrence of problems concerning heritage management, reduce unnecessary waste of resources, and elevate the management quality of monuments and historical buildings.

The university students in departments of industrial design can perform quite well in design basis, practice courses, but their design thinking and imagination appear to be limited. The lack diversity and innovativeness may affect products they design. Therefore, incorporation of innovative theories and methods in design courses to stimulate students’ imagination to enhance their performance can be an area worth examining in order to improve current design education. The purpose of this study is to investigate theories and methods that can be adopted in industrial design curriculum planning to stimulate imagination and analyze the effects on students’ imaginations. Five experts, each with more than 10 years of experiences in industrial design, are invited to work with the research team to apply the contents of STEP Factors Analysis, Image Mind Map, TRIZ Method, Persona, and Scenario to design courses to be taught to second-year design class in a university for 18 weeks. There are 52 students and they are divided into two groups, 26 people each. The experimental group takes the courses designed to stimulate imagination and the control group the original courses. The experts use a 5-point Likert scale in which Vygotsky’s imagination indexes are adapted to record the imagination each week. The results show that the group of using creative methods has better imagination at different design stages.

Bi0.8Pr0.2Fe0.95Mn0.05O3/Bi3.96Gd0.04Ti2.95W0.05O12 (BPFMO/BGTWO) bilayer thin films with Multiferroic/Ferroelectric (MF/FE) structures were deposited onto Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates by using the sol-gel method with rapid thermal annealing. The BPFMO/BGTWO thin films exhibited well-saturated ferromagnetic and ferroelectric hysteresis loops because of the electro-magnetic coupling induced by the MF/FE structure. The remnant magnetization (2Mr) and remnant polarization (2Pr) were 4.6 emu/cm3 and 62 μC/cm2, respectively. Moreover, the bipolar I-V switching curves of BPFMO/BGTWO bilayer thin films resistive random access memory (RRAM) devices were discussed, and investigated for LRS/HRS.

The purpose of this work is to combine negative air ions (NAIs) and mechanical filters for removal of indoor suspended particulates. Various factors, including aerosol size (0.05-0.45 μm), face velocity (10 and 20 cm/s), species of aerosol (potassium chloride and dioctyl phthalate), relative humidity (30% and 70%), and concentrations of NAIs (2 ´ 104, 1 ´ 105, and 2 ´ 105 NAIs/cm3) were considered to evaluate their effects on the aerosol collection characteristics of filters. Results show that the aerosol penetration through the mechanical filter is higher than that through the mechanical filters cooperated with NAIs. This finding implies that the aerosol removal efficiency of mechanical filters can be improved by NAIs. Furthermore, the aerosol penetration through the mechanical filters increased with the aerosol size when NAIs were added. That is due to that the aerosol is easier to be charged when its size gets larger. The results also indicate the aerosol penetration decreased with the NAIs concentration increased. Reversely, aerosol penetration through the mechanical filters increased with the face velocity under the influence of NAIs. The aerosol penetration through the filter with NAIs was no affected with relative humidity. Finally, The penetration through the filter with NAIs against solid aerosol was lower than that against liquid aerosol.

A network is said to be conditionally faulty if its every vertex is incident to at least g fault-free neighbors, where g≥1. An n-dimensional folded hypercube FQn is a well-known variation of an n-dimensional hypercube Qn, which can be constructed from Qn by adding an edge to every pair of vertices with complementary addresses. In this paper, we define that a network is said to be g-conditionally faulty if its every vertex is incident to at least g fault-free neighbors, and let FFv (respectively, FFe) denote the set of faulty vertices (respectively, faulty edges) in FQn. Then, we consider for the cycles embedding properties in FQn−FFv−FFe with 4-conditionally faulty, as follows: (1) For n≥3, FQn−FFv−FFe contains a fault-free cycle of every even length from 4 to 2n−2|FFv|, where |FFn|+|FFe| ≤ 2n−5; (2) For even n≥4, FQn−FFv−FFe contains a fault-free cycle of every odd length from n+1 to 2n−2|FFv|−1, where |FFv|+|FFe| ≤ 2n−5.
