The Amnesia Light and Brief Assessment (ALBA) and the door PICture Naming and Immediate Recall (PICNIR) brief tests for identifying mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease.
To identify mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Parkinson's disease (PD) using two brief tests the Amnesia Light and Brief Asssment (ALBA) and the door Picture Naming and Immediate Recall (dPICNIR) in 6-8 minutes. The ALBA, the dPICNIR and the third version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) were administered to 124 participants, equally divided into PD patients and socio-demographically matched normal controls (NC). The PD group was divided into those with normal cognitive functions (PD-CN) and with MCI (PD-MCI) using neuropsychological tests. Cognitive impairment in the PD group was mild, with significantly lower ACE-III scores than in NC (91 vs. 96 points). Despite these subtle deficits, gesture recall in the ALBA was significantly lower even in the PD-CN group compared to the NC. PD-MCI patients had other significant deficits in the ALBA and PICNIR tests. In the PD group, the gesture recall in the ALBA and correctly recalled pictures in the dPICNIR correlated with the results of verbal fluency and trail making tests, followed by memory tests and all ACE-III scores except visuospatial one. In contrast, correctly recalled sentence words in the ALBA correlated with the memory and language scores in the ACE-III test and memory test scores. Subtle cognitive changes in PD can be detected through gesture recall test, even in those with normal cognition. The ALBA and PICNIR tests are effective in identifying MCI in PD and provide a brief and valid assessment of cognitive functions. They are freely available at www.abadeco.cz.

The purpose of the study. This study examined whether perceived coach etiquette predicts intrinsic and extrinsic sport motivation among collegiate softball and baseball athletes in a selected Philippine university. Materials and methods. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional (non-experimental) design was employed. Forty-five varsity athletes (softball n=23; baseball n=22; female n=23; male n=22) completed a survey packet consisting of (a) a modified Perceived Coach Attitudes and Behaviors Scale (PCABS; 28 items; 4-point response format) to capture coach etiquette-related behaviors and (b) the Sport Motivation Scale-II construct coverage (23 items; 4-point response format) to capture athletes’ motivational regulations. Descriptive statistics summarized perceived etiquette and motivation. Linear regression tested the hypothesized predictive effect of coach etiquette on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (α=0.05). Results. Athletes perceived coaches’ etiquette as a moderate degree of respect (overall M=3.03). Athletes reported strong sport motivation (overall M=3.69). Regression analyses indicated that coach etiquette did not significantly predict intrinsic motivation (t=0.846, p=0.4023) or extrinsic motivation (t=1.33, p=0.2636). Conclusions. Coach etiquette was positively perceived but did not significantly explain intrinsic or extrinsic motivation in this cohort. Future work should include autonomy-supportive coaching, motivational climate, and psychological need satisfaction as potential mediators/moderators.

A Cross-sectional Study of the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices on Sun Exposure and Protection between College Track and Field Athletes from the Urban and Rural Settings in the Philippines
Background: Skin cancer incidence has risen in recent decades, with excessive ultraviolet radiation exposure being a significant factor, especially among athletes involved in outdoor sports. This study examines differences in knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding sun exposure and protection between urban and rural college track and field athletes. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Philippines with 60 college track and field athletes selected through nonprobability convenience sampling. A questionnaire, adapted from two local studies, assessed KAP regarding sun exposure. The final questionnaire was then distributed via Google Forms. Pearson’s correlation assessed the relationships between KAP. Results: Urban and rural athletes lacked adequate knowledge about sun exposure and protection, though urban athletes had a slightly higher knowledge score. Urban athletes exhibited more desirable attitudes toward sun protection. Both the groups showed inadequate sun protection practices. Social media was the most common source of information. Conclusions: This study found that while locality does not determine sun protection practices, urban athletes showed more positive attitudes. Greater knowledge was linked to better attitudes but did not always translate into improved practices. Addressing barriers that hinder the application of sun protection knowledge is essential to bridging this gap and promoting consistent sun safety behaviors, especially among athletes who engage in outdoor sports.

Neutrophilic dermatosis of the hands (NDH) is an uncommon inflammatory condition recognized as a localized variant of Sweet syndrome, seen in older adults with malignancy or systemic inflammatory disease. We present a rare case of NDH in a 23-year-old male in an unusual location, without the typical associated systemic illness or recent trauma. The patient presented with recurrent, painful erythematous nodules exclusively on the fingers and a violaceous bulla-like plaque on the volar surface of the left index finger. Laboratory tests showed leukocytosis with neutrophilia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and normal C-reactive protein levels. Investigations for other underlying causes were unremarkable. Histopathologic examination was consistent with NDH. He was treated with dapsone 50 mg daily, with resolution in 3 weeks, and no recurrence was reported. This case expands the clinical spectrum of NDH. It highlights the importance of considering it in the differential diagnosis of painful hand lesions in younger patients, even in the absence of typical risk factors or systemic involvement.

Mercado-Asis: None.Introduction:Bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing neuroendocrine neoplasms that account for 0.5-5% of pulmonary malignancies. These tumors often challenging to diagnose due to their diverse presentations and the absence of distinct biochemical markers. Compared to other lung cancers, these types of tumor generally have more favorable prognosis, however their potential complications such as carcinoid crisis post significant risk.Clinical Case:We present a case of a 26-year-old male diagnosed with a typical bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumor in the left main bronchus. This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of this rare condition. Critical to the successful outcome was meticulous preoperative preparation, including the administration of octreotide to prevent a potentially life-threatening carcinoid crisis.Preoperative planning also involved an extensive pulmonary function assessment to evaluate the patient’s respiratory capacity and the risks associated with surgical resection. Despite negative biochemical markers for carcinoid syndrome, the patient presented with symptoms typical of this condition. This highlights the importance of clinical assessment in diagnosing rare tumors, especially when laboratory findings are inconclusive.Following a thorough evaluation, the decision was made to proceed with surgery. The patient then underwent a post-operative pulmonary rehabilitation program aimed to optimize recovery and return patient to baseline conditions. Conclusion:This case highlights the effectiveness and essentiality of multidisciplinary collaboration that begins from diagnosis and preoperative planning, as well as individualized postoperative care to achieve the best outcome for patients presenting with bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors. A tailored, multi-disciplinary approach combining surgical expertise, early diagnosis, genetic evaluation, and long-term surveillance is crucial for the successful management of bronchopulmonary NETs.Presentation: Sunday, July 13, 2025
Read moreSurgical Approaches for Residual Secondary Gaze Diplopia After Strabismus Surgery: A Case Series
This case series describes three patients who experienced residual diplopia in secondary gaze positions despite successful strabismus surgery and satisfactory alignment in primary gaze. While initial procedures effectively resolved diplopia in the primary position, symptoms remained in secondary gaze and interfered with daily activities. Each patient underwent an additional surgical procedure specifically addressing the residual diplopia, leading to significant improvement or complete resolution of symptoms. These findings highlight that although primary gaze alignment is the primary goal of strabismus surgery, tailored interventions may be required for patients with symptomatic secondary gaze diplopia to optimize functional outcomes and quality of life.
