Worldwide, Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) are the 8th leading cause of death, and leading killer of children and young adults. An additional 50 million people are seriously injured annually. We argue here that RTAs are also a leading - although rarely acknowledged - cause of preventable disability in low and middle-income countries. The Road Traffic Safety community pays little attention to people disabled in an RTA once they leave medical or rehabilitative care. Disability policy, advocacy and research groups rarely consider people disabled in RTAs as a discrete subgroup within the disability community. Furthermore, the costs and consequences of RTA-related disability are greatly underestimated. A scoping review and interviews with prominent road traffic safety and disability experts identified major conceptual gaps between the fields of Road Traffic Safety and Disability, including how people disabled in RTAs are identified, followed and provided with needed services and support. The current lack of 'joined up' thinking around those who survive an RTA with a disability represents a lost opportunity to more systemically address this major global health concern.

Micronutrient inadequacies are estimated to affect billions of people worldwide, yet these estimates exclude fortification. There are no global estimates of the impact of current fortification programmes on micronutrient inadequacies. We aimed to estimate how improving existing programmes or establishing new ones affects the prevalence of micronutrient inadequacies and to estimate their global costs. In this modelling study, we estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 13 micronutrients across 185 countries by integrating global modelled dietary intake data from the Global Dietary Database, with fortification programme parameters from the Global Fortification Data Exchange. We modelled six scenarios: no fortification, current fortification, improved compliance, aligned standards, aligned standards with improved compliance, and aligned standards with improved compliance and expanded coverage. Implementation costs were calculated as the sum of premix, industry-related, and government costs across five fortified foods: wheat flour, maize flour, oil, rice, and salt. Compared with no fortification, current fortification programmes prevent 7·0 billion inadequate person-nutrient intakes annually at a global cost of $1·06 billion (mean of $0·18 [SD 0·28] per person, 2021 US$, across the five fortified foods), with iodine fortification alone preventing 3·3 billion inadequacies. Despite current fortification, 38·6 billion inadequate intakes persist. Improving compliance would prevent 13·1 billion inadequacies at a global cost of $3·48 billion annually (mean $0·23 [SD 0·33] per person). Aligning standards and improving compliance would prevent 17·2 billion inadequacies at $6·56 billion annually (mean $0·63 [SD 0·53] per person). Aligning standards, improving compliance, and expanding coverage would prevent 24·7 billion inadequacies at $9·19 billion annually (mean $1·15 [SD 0·58] per person), although 20·9 billion inadequacies would remain. Fortification is a cost-effective intervention that greatly reduces micronutrient inadequacies, particularly for iodine and iron. Improving compliance offers immediate gains. Aligning with international guidelines and expanding programmes could triple their effects but cannot eliminate all inadequacies, underscoring the importance of complementary approaches to improve diet quality. Approximately 75% of children aged 2 to 4 worldwide are regularly subjected to violent discipline. We study the impact of a digitally delivered intervention on positive parenting practices in Jamaica using a randomized controlled trial. Results show that the intervention improves caregiver knowledge (0.52 SD), attitudes toward violence (0.2 SD), and reduces caregiver violence against children (0.12 SD). Treatment children experience fewer emotional problems (0.17 SD). We also find reductions in caregiver depression (0.12 SD), anxiety (0.16 SD), and parental stress (0.16 SD) for treatment caregivers nine months later. The digital delivery has important scalable policy implications that could help decrease violence against children worldwide. • RCT of a digitally delivered intervention on non-violent parenting in Jamaica. • Content was delivered through SMS, an app, and online group parenting sessions. • Document ITT improvements in caregiver knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. • Findings show reductions in caregiver depression, anxiety, and stress nine months later. • Scalable policy implications could help decrease violence against children worldwide.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance profiles of bacterial isolates from sheep and goats in Hyderabad and Tandojam, Pakistan. A total of 100 samples (nasal swabs, fecal matter, wound exudates, and milk) were collected from clinically healthy and diseased small ruminants. Bacterial isolation and identification were performed using morphological, cultural, and biochemical methods. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted using the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method against 11 commonly used antibiotics. Results revealed an overall bacterial prevalence of 42%. The most frequently isolated bacteria were Escherichia coli (48%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (45%), Bacillus cereus (32%), Streptococcus pyogenes (30%), Pasteurella multocida (28%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (25%), and Micrococcus luteus (18%). High antimicrobial resistance was observed against ampicillin, enrofloxacin, and ofloxacin among most isolates, whereas gentamicin and tetracycline remained largely effective. The findings highlight the significant presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in small ruminants, posing potential zoonotic risks and emphasizing the need for prudent antimicrobial use in veterinary practice in the region.

ABSTRACT European countries continue to lag in productivity growth, with significant disparities across industries. This study utilises harmonised industry‐level data to examine the patterns and drivers of total factor productivity (TFP) growth across 28 European countries from 1995 to 2020. The empirical analysis yields four key insights. First, TFP growth is strongly influenced by the extent to which countries engage in scientific and technological innovation, either as pioneers or as recipients of knowledge spillovers. Second, closing the technological gap is critical: Countries that converge towards the technological frontier by adopting new innovations tend to achieve greater productivity gains. Third, increased investment in information and communications technology (ICT) capital and research and development (R&D) significantly contributes to higher TFP growth. Finally, the role of human capital becomes more pronounced in countries closer to the technological frontier. These findings underscore the importance of policy interventions and structural reforms that promote innovation and facilitate the diffusion of both emerging and established technologies.
