Rare earth/g-C3N4-based composite photocatalytic materials: A critical review
Polo-like kinase 5 is lowly expressed and negatively correlates with poorer differentiation, and its positivity may predict a better prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer.
The Polo-like kinase (PLK) family contains five members, among which the former (PLK1-4) has prognostic value in colorectal cancer (CRC); however, since PLK5 was recently discovered, its related information is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the expression of PLK5 in CRC tissues versus adjacent nontumor tissues and its correlation with the characteristics and prognosis of CRC patients. PLK5 expression was detected in 107 CRC tissues and 20 adjacent nontumor tissues via immunohistochemistry. CRC patient characteristics, relapse-free survival (RFS), and overall survival (OS) information were acquired. The Human Protein Atlas database was used for verification of the correlation of PLK5 with OS. PLK5 expression was lower in CRC tissues than in adjacent nontumor tissues (P < 0.001); specifically, 15.0% of patients had positive PLK5 expression in tumors, and 4.7% of patients had high PLK5 expression in tumors. PLK5 expression was negatively correlated with poorly differentiated or undifferentiated tumors (r=-0.312, P = 0.001) but not with other patient characteristics. RFS tended to be greater in the PLK5-positive group than in the PLK5-negative expression group (P = 0.077) and in the PLK5-high-expression group than in the PLK5-low-expression group (P = 0.167), but the difference did not reach statistical significance. OS revealed similar trends (P = 0.220 and P = 0.264). The Human Protein Atlas database revealed that high PLK5 expression was correlated with longer OS in the rectum adenocarcinoma (TCGA) cohort (P = 0.037) and tended to be associated with better OS in the colon adenocarcinoma (validation) cohort (P = 0.120) and the rectum adenocarcinoma (validation) cohort (P = 0.150). PLK5 is a potential tumor-suppressor biomarker for CRC management.
Read moreA fatigue driving detection method based on driver posture and facial state analysis.
Fatigue driving is one of the primary causes of traffic accidents, posing a serious threat not only to the driver’s life and property but also to the safety of surrounding vehicles and pedestrians. Therefore, accurate and efficient detection of driver fatigue is essential for preventing traffic incidents. This study proposes a novel driver fatigue detection framework that integrates AlphaPose* with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. To enhance the performance of AlphaPose, the original human detector is replaced with an optimized YOLOv11n model, which incorporates a Hybrid Pooling Fusion Block (HPFB) to improve feature representation and meet the requirements of keypoint estimation. Furthermore, a multi-view data processing strategy based on the Driving Monitoring Dataset (DMD) is introduced to capture driver behavior from frontal, lateral, and hand views. To effectively model the temporal dynamics of driver behavior, a fatigue behavior monitoring network is designed using LSTM. Comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed AlphaPose*-LSTM-based system achieves superior performance in fatigue detection tasks compared to existing state-of-the-art approaches.
Read moreNickel price forecasting based onempirical mode decomposition and deep learning model with expansion mechanism
As a critical material for stainless steel production, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and advanced technology alloys, nickel plays a pivotal role in the global energy transition, with its strategic value becoming increasingly evident. This study presents a novel hybrid forecasting framework that combines Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) with a Dilated Long Short-Term Memory (Dilated LSTM) network to address the high uncertainty and complexity of nickel price fluctuations. By leveraging EEMD for multi-scale decomposition and Dilated LSTM for advanced temporal feature extraction, the proposed EEMD-DilatedLSTM model is designed to enhance predictive precision across different time horizons.Empirical results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms benchmark algorithms in both short-term and medium-to-long-term prediction of nickel futures prices. Ablation studies validate the effectiveness of the hybrid architecture, and interpretability analyses highlight the decisive influence of low-frequency components in medium-to-long-term forecasting. Additionally, the Shapley value of copper price fluctuations is identified as a key driver, emphasizing its transmission effect on nickel prices. This study provides a robust methodological framework for strategic metal price forecasting, offering valuable insights for risk management in resource-driven enterprises and informing evidence-based industrial policy design by governments.
Read moreEffects of two gas blending methods for incubator on the outcomes of frozen embryo transfer
To investigate the effects of two different gas blending methods on the microenvironment of in vitro embryo culture. Using real-time monitoring systems, we tracked temperature, CO₂, and pressure in both incubator types. Blood gas analyzers measured media parameters (pCO₂, pO₂, pH). Retrospective analysis included 3658 frozen transfer cycles from women ≤ 35 without genetic/uterine anomalies. The participants were divided into two groups: the lumen blending group (n = 2746) and the preblending group (n = 912). The outcomes of frozen embryo transfer at cleavage stage and blastocyst stage were compared between the two groups. The concentration of CO2 in the preblending incubator was significantly lower (4.40%vs. 5.82%, p < 0.001). The results showed that the pH value (7.418 vs. 7.351, p < 0.05) and O2 pressure (90 vs. 81 mmHg, p < 0.05) of the preblending incubator were significantly higher than that of the lumen blending incubator, while the CO2 pressure was lower (31 vs. 38 mmHg, p < 0.01). The clinical pregnancy rate (56.77% vs. 45.90%, p < 0.05), implantation rate (40.64% vs. 32.52%, p < 0.05) and live birth rate (45.81% vs. 37.70%, p < 0.05) of cleavage embryos in the lumen blending group were significantly higher than those in the preblending group, though blastocyst results showed no intergroup differences. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that the lumen blending group had a significantly higher clinical pregnancy rate compared to the preblending group (aOR = 1.431, 95% CI 1.024 ~ 2.001, p = 0.036). There was also a trend towards a higher live birth rate in the preblending group (aOR = 1.332, 95% CI 0.947 ~ 1.874, p = 0.100). The lumen blending incubators may ensures superior gas concentration stability and faster CO₂ recovery. This method proves more beneficial for cleavage-stage embryos, whereas blastocyst development remains unaffected by gas blending methods.
Read moreRestoration affects the temporal stability of biodiversity and productivity in degraded grasslands
Abstract Various restoration measures have been implemented to restore degraded grasslands, demonstrating generally positive effects on plant productivity. Temporal stability is essential for adequate delivery and maintenance of ecosystem services; yet, how it changes with restoration of ecosystem structure and function and the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently studied. We conducted a meta‐analysis of 331 multi‐year comparisons across 22 degraded grassland sites in China to assess the impacts of nine restoration measures on plant above‐ground net primary productivity (ANPP), species richness and their temporal stabilities. The restoration measures included fertilization alone, enclosure, reseeding, ploughing, irrigation and their combinations with fertilization. Ecological restoration generally enhanced the ANPP of degraded grasslands in China but had little impact on the temporal stability and species richness. Stability responses varied depending on restoration measures and grassland type, where they were reduced by fertilization, ploughing and their combination, increased by irrigation and its combination with fertilization and remained unaffected by enclosure and reseeding. The stability of meadow steppe was more sensitive to ecological restoration than other grassland types. Furthermore, fertilization showed a less negative effect on community stability in severely degraded grasslands, whereas long‐term enclosure enhanced community stability of degraded grassland with higher precipitation amounts. Changes in species dominance (either in biomass or abundance) and the stability of dominant species (with relative biomass or abundance >10% of the community) determined grassland community stability under restoration. Synthesis and applications . Our findings demonstrate that fertilization destabilizes plant productivity in degraded grassland, whereas long‐term enclosure enhances community stability. The response of community stability to restoration is primarily driven by plant dominance and dominant species stability. Furthermore, restoration effects on community stability are mediated by environmental conditions, grassland type, degradation severity and restoration duration, which deserve more attention in restoration management.

Opportunities and Challenges of Educational Game Applications for Preschoolers’ Social Development: An Experimental Study on Children Aged 3–6 Years
Social development in preschoolers is critically important, and one approach to enhancing it is integrating digital technologies. The primary objective of this article is to evaluate the effectiveness of three educational game applications (Peppy Pals, Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame, Daniel Tiger’s Grr-ific Feelings) in fostering social development among preschool children aged 3 to 6 years. This study examines aspects of social cooperation, social interaction, social independence, as well as externalizing and internalizing behaviors in children. The Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scales (PKBS) served as the assessment tool, with a sample of 180 children from two urban preschools. The results showed a significant improvement in social skills and a reduction in problematic behavior in the experimental groups compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Older preschool children (aged 5–6 years) demonstrated the most pronounced growth in cooperation and independence, accompanied by a decrease in externalizing behavior. A qualitative analysis of teacher interviews revealed both the potential and practical challenges of using educational gaming applications in preschool institutions, offering recommendations for educators and developers.
Read moreHydroxyl-Mediated Adsorption Site Distribution on Titanium Dioxide@Covalent Organic Framework and Enhanced Selective Separation and Detection of Lead Ions.
This work designs a titanium dioxide@covalent organic framework composite material (TiO2-COF), which optimizes the distribution of lead adsorption sites by adjusting the position of hydroxyl groups in the COF, thereby enhancing the separation efficiency of trace Pb2+ ions. The composite material integrates the advantages of metal oxides and porous materials, optimizing the separation performance of Pb2+ ions through a synergistic enhancement effect. Additionally, its multi-interface structural characteristics provide the material with multidimensional selectivity, resulting in a highly selective separation material. In selectivity experiments, the material demonstrated high adsorption selectivity for Pb2+ ions compared to several other metal ions. Thermodynamic and kinetic simulation results prove that the adsorption of Pb2+ ions by TiO2-COF conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model. After multiple cycles of use, the material still maintains high adsorption efficiency, demonstrating its potential clean and green application value in the highly selective separation of metal pollutants. The constructed material was used for the separation and preconcentration of Pb2+ ions, establishing a detection system for trace Pb2+ ions. The detection limit of the method is 0.073µg L-1 (3σ/K, n = 9), with precision ranging from 0.55% to 11.7% (n = 11), and a linear range of 0.2-5µg L-1, exhibiting strong anti-interference capability. The constructed method achieves the determination of lead ions in real samples, with recoveries ranging from 95% to 103%. Moreover, the standard material GBW08607 was analyzed through the constructed system, and the t-test shows that the calculated t-value is 2.01, which is less than the tabulated t-value of 2.57 (n = 6), proving the reliability of the method. It provides a potential alternative material for the separation and analysis of other environmental pollutants.
