Effectiveness of tobacco control policy interventions on tobacco use behaviours and health outcomes based on ITS research methodology: a scoping review
ObjectiveTo provide an overview of the effectiveness of global tobacco control policies using Interrupted Time Series (ITS) methodology and analyse key health outcome indicators and methodological differences in ITS studies.Data sourcesPubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched for ITS studies on tobacco control policies from database inception to 1 July 2024.Study selection55 English-language studies were selected based on strict inclusion criteria.Data extractionThree researchers extracted data on study characteristics, design, conclusions and limitations.Data synthesisOf the studies, 28 used monthly time intervals, 40 focused on a single time break, 47 used non-Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average models, 40 considered seasonality, 34 controlled for confounding factors and only 13 included a control group. The implementation and evaluation of tobacco control policies demonstrated considerable geographical imbalance, with Europe reporting the largest number of evaluations (n = 23), followed by Asia (n = 12) and North America (n = 10), whereas South America (n = 4), multiple regions (n = 4) and Oceania (n = 2) were markedly under-represented. Overall, policies were associated with beneficial effects across multiple health outcomes, including reductions in emergency visit rate, hospitalisation rates, secondhand smoke exposure rate and smoking prevalence, although certain outcome measures exhibited notable heterogeneity.ConclusionsITS applications differ in time-interval selection, modelling and control of seasonality and confounding, contributing to result heterogeneity. Tobacco control policies are effective across multiple health indicators, though variability warrants further study. Future work should enhance reporting and methodological standardisation, particularly in control group use and statistical modelling, and strengthen policy implementation and evaluation in low- and middle-income countries to promote equitable global progress.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Streblus indicus.
The bark of Streblus indicus, a Dai medicine in China, has been listed in the Chinese Materia Medica as possessing hemostatic and analgesic properties. Ethnic medicine books record that its bark or leaves for the treatment of mumps and lymphoma. However, according to the literature survey, anti-inflammatory and analgesic studies available for leaves and branches of S. indicus have been seldom reported so far. The current study focuses on the metabolites of S. indicus bark and leaves responsible for anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects on the basis of bioactive-included acetic acid writhing, hot-plate, and xylene-induced ear swelling. The secretion of inflammatory mediators, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, IL-4, and IL-10, were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory by xylene-induced in mouse ear cells. Histological examination was used to assess the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the branches and leaves of S. indicus, and Western blot analysis determined the mechanism of the methanolic extract of branches and leaves. Different metabolites of S. indicus significantly alleviated analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, with no discernable differences among them. All metabolites decreased the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and increased the levels of IL-4 and IL-10. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory mechanism of the methanolic extract was related to the NF-kB signaling pathway. These results not only would account for scientific knowledge for the traditional application of S. indicus, but also provide a credible theoretical foundation for the further development of anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents.
Read moreThe Dilemma and Solution of Socialized Extension Work in China's Judicial Administrative Drug Rehabilitation
The Anti-Drug Law has established a four-in-one drug rehabilitation system, including voluntary drug rehabilitation, community-based drug rehabilitation, compulsory isolation drug rehabilitation, and community rehabilitation. Community rehabilitation, as a consolidation measure after drug rehabilitation, is constrained by factors such as personnel, funding, and technology, which prevent it from fully exerting its function of consolidating drug rehabilitation effects. Social extension, as an extension of the function of compulsory isolation drug rehabilitation facilities, has compensated for the shortcomings of community rehabilitation in terms of professional talent and technical support. However, due to inadequate legal support, different supervisory departments, and overlapping business responsibilities, social extension work currently faces many difficulties. With the development of society and the improvement of understanding of drug rehabilitation laws, the focus of compulsory isolation drug rehabilitation work will not be limited to fixed locations and a period of about two years. Instead, it should leverage advantages in talent, technology, and information to reshape institutions and optimize processes around reducing relapse rates. Through on-site investigations of the current social extension work, it is found that there are currently issues such as incomplete laws and regulations, unconsolidated business processes, no established follow-up care and tracking mechanisms, low social extension service levels, insufficient publicity efforts, and deviation from guiding principles. Based on China's current political, economic, and technological foundations, there is still a lot of room for improvement in the effectiveness of social extension work. From a legal perspective, the legislative process should be accelerated and current laws and regulations should be improved. From a process perspective, business processes should be re-engineered and organizational structures optimized. From a talent perspective, incentive mechanisms should be improved, and professional development strengthened. From a service perspective, employment issues should be emphasized to create a return environment. From an information perspective, digital construction should be accelerated to meet audience needs. From an acceptance perspective, drug prevention publicity should be expanded, and guiding principles clarified. From an iterative perspective, a negotiation platform should be established, and a corrective mechanism constructed.
Read moreEffects of propiconazole on physiological and biochemical properties of Panax notoginseng and dietary risk assessment
To study the residue and dietary risk of propiconazole in Panax notoginseng and the effects on physiological and bioche-mical properties of P. notoginseng, we conducted foliar spraying of propiconazole on P. notoginseng in pot experiments. The physiolo-gical and biochemical properties studied included leaf damage, osmoregulatory substance content, antioxidant enzyme system, non-enzymatic system, and saponin content in the main root. The results showed that at the same application concentration, the residual amount of propiconazole in each part of P. notoginseng increased with the increase in the times of application and decreased with the extension of harvest interval. After one-time application of propiconazole according to the recommended dose(132 g·hm~(-2)) for P. ginseng, the half-life was 11.37-13.67 days. After 1-2 times of application in P. notoginseng, propiconazole had a low risk of dietary intake and safety threat to the population. The propiconazole treatment at the recommended concentration and above significantly increased the malondialdehyde(MDA) content, relative conductivity, and osmoregulatory substances and caused the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in P. notoginseng leaves. The propiconazole treatment at half(66 g·hm~(-2)) of the recommended dose for P. ginseng significantly increased the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), peroxidase(POD), and catalase(CAT) in P. notoginseng leaves. The propiconazole treatment at 132 g·hm~(-2) above inhibited the activities of glutathione reductase(GR) and glutathione S-transferase(GST), thereby reducing glutathione(GSH) content. Proconazole treatment changed the proportion of 5 main saponins in the main root of P. notoginseng. The treatment with 66 g·hm~(-2) propiconazole promoted the accumulation of saponins, while that with 132 g·hm~(-2) and above propiconazole significantly inhibited the accumulation of saponins. In summary, using propiconazole at 132 g·hm~(-2) to prevent and treat P. notoginseng diseases will cause stress on P. notoginseng, while propiconazole treatment at 66 g·hm~(-2) will not cause stress on P. notoginseng but promote the accumulation of saponins. The effect of propiconazole on P. notoginseng diseases remains to be studied.
Read moreModulation of Methamphetamine-Related Attention Bias by Intermittent Theta-Burst Stimulation on Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex
BackgroundPrevious studies have identified the treatment effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on cravings of patients with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). However, the mechanism underlying the treatment effect remains largely unknown. A potential candidate mechanism could be that rTMS over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) modulates the attention bias to methamphetamine-related cues. The purpose of this study is therefore to determine the modulation of rTMS on methamphetamine-related attention bias and the corresponding electrophysiological changes.MethodsForty-nine patients with severe MUD were included for analysis. The subjects were randomized to receive the active intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) or sham iTBS targeting DLPFC for 20 sessions. Participants performed the Addiction Stroop Task before and after the treatment while being recorded by a 64-channel electroencephalogram. Baseline characteristics were collected through the Addiction Severity Index.ResultsPost-treatment evaluations showed a reduced error rate in discriminating the color of methamphetamine words in the active iTBS group compared with the sham iTBS group. Following rTMS treatment, we found the significant time-by-group effect for the N1 amplitude (methamphetamine words > neutral words) and P3 latency (methamphetamine words > neutral words). The change of N1 amplitude was positively correlated with cravings in the active group. Moreover, reduced power of neural oscillation in the beta band, manifesting at frontal central areas, was also found in the active group.ConclusionThis study suggests that attention bias and the beta oscillation during the attentional processing of methamphetamine words in patients with MUD could be modulated by iTBS applied to left DLPFC.
