The issues surrounding the future of Korea's shipping policy have been heavily debated since 1990 because the Korean shipping industry has been facing rising crew costs and difficulties in recruitment of qualified crew, an adverse taxation system, very limited access to foreign capital markets, and an inflexible government regulatory environment. Consequently, this has contributed to the deterioration of Korea's compectitive edge. This paper aims to provide both an account of the current adverse situtation in Korean shipping business and proposals to alleviate the plight of shipping enterprises. Within the context of that adversity, two solutions are suggested to improve the current situation, by either establishing a Korean second register or flagging out. The paper explores the advantages and disadvantages of each solution. Because ship management is closely interrelated to flagging strategies, the paper also discusses areas of co-operation between Korean shipping or ship management companies and advanced foreign ship management companies.

PurposeThis study aims to study the resilience of the maritime industry by analyzing the impacts of COVID-19 on the maritime industry, in particular, on the shipping management aspect and offshore sector, investigate the effectiveness of current solutions and recommend future solutions for the industry to reduce or mitigate the negative impacts.Design/methodology/approachIn order to better appreciate resilience in the maritime industry, the study conducted secondary research and semi-structured online interviews to (1) identify the impacts of COVID-19 on the shipping management and offshore sector, (2) analyze the effectiveness of current solutions and (3) provide some strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the current measures.Findingshe results are congruent with existing literature which indicate that the pandemic has negatively affected the global economy, changed the global trade network and contributed to the sharp decline in demand for oil. In response to the pandemic, governments have implemented safety and health-related measures such as lockdown, safe-distancing and travel restrictions. Often, measures differ from countries to countries and these non-standardized and changing regulations further increase the challenges faced by the industry. From the shipping management perspective, the industry experienced issues such as crew changing, trade contraction and the expiration of shipping certificates, which supported and validated current research. Meanwhile, the offshore industry is challenged by the increasing market volatility and uncertainty, increasing need to source for alternative fuels and the declining oil exploration activities. Current strategies adopted by shipping management companies include crew change management, capacity management and the extension of ship certificates, whereas offshore industry chose to collaborate with oil majors.Research limitations/implicationsBy identifying the impacts and challenges and studying the effectiveness of solutions adopted by the maritime industry, this paper allows maritime industry stakeholders and policymakers to develop strategies to mitigate the effects of the global health crisis and strengthen the resilience of the industry. However, as the pandemic continues to develop and evolve, strategies need to be reviewed continuously in response to the changing situations.Originality/valueThis research analyses the impacts and solutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which contributes to the development and formulation of strategies to strengthen the resilience of maritime transport.

Competition and competitiveness issues are extremely topical at the present stage. However, the role of price and non-price competition in enterprises has not been sufficiently studied and requires a more detailed study, which was the purpose of the article. It has been established that the first theories of competition were formulated at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and since then have been constantly undergoing various modifications. Given the evolution of the concept of "competition", it can be defined as a set of activities carried out by market participants to achieve their goals and consist in the integration of various instruments of competition - the provision of additional services by joining the offer of related services; formation of attractive prices by differentiating the forms and terms of payment; improving the forms and channels of product sales, customer service, improving communication through prompt and reliable information. The importance of dividing competition into price and non-price competition has been proven. Price competition. This is a kind of struggle with competitors by reducing the price of goods. Non-price competition offers more progressive and modern methods. These include isolating their products from similar competitors' products, introducing special features, expanding the range of products, improving quality, increasing advertising and warranty costs. Non-price competition allows you to focus on progress and drive sales without price fluctuations. Non-price competition indicates a higher level of quality of interactions in the market. The main advantages and disadvantages of non-price competition are determined. Thus, we can conclude that competition is an integral part of the market. The concept of competition has changed with the development of society, various economic trends and schools have contributed to this concept. From the point of view of microeconomics, it is important to divide competition into price and non-price, the use of which contributes to the increase in the efficiency of entrepreneurial activity.

As a newborn organization bearing the responsibility, ship management company plays more and more important role in the maritime safety and management. The article studies the concept of ship Management company, combined with several special rectification activities of The State Department of transportation, use online survey technology to analyze the reason of the problem, clarifies the position of the ship management company and gives some suggestions for the risk control and development of the company.

China has a long history of grape cultivating and wine making, which can be tracked back to thousand years ago. Nowadays, after a rapid economic growth of thirty years, China has become one of the world's largest wine-consuming markets with great growth potential. At the same time, we cannot ignore the fact that China is an important wine producer as well. In recent years, both the vineyard area and wine production have increased dramatically in China owing to the increasing domestic demand, improved life-standard and improved technologies and matured management experience in the area of viticulture. In the meantime, the international wine market is vigorously competitive. Hence, there is a need to consider the potential of China's domestic production to satisfy domestic demand and even the competitiveness in the international market. With this goal, this Thesis provides four questions: 1. What is the competitiveness of Chinese wine industry compared to the main wine producing countries in the world and how has it evolved historically. 2. Considering the huge size as a country and local diversity, what are the main factors of regional competitiveness and how is the regional competitiveness of wine production in different wine regions in China. 3. Facing the influence of climate change of both challenges and opportunities, what are the possible effects on regional competitiveness and adequate adaptive measures. 4. What are the internal and external factors which shape the wine industry and wine market in China and what kinds of strategies can contribute to the further development of the wine industry in China. To answers these four questions, the specific objectives of this thesis are as following: 1. To analyze and determine competitiveness of Chinese wines in a global scenario. 2. To analyze the regional competitiveness of local wine industries and factors which contribute to its determination. 3. To study the impacts of climate change on the wine production in China and provide adaptation strategies. 4. To analyze determining factors and provide adequate strategies for the development of the Chinese wine industry. To support this study, several methods have been adopted like literature review, statistical analysis, market competitiveness analysis, Porter’s Diamond Model and industry competitiveness analysis, climate change scenario analysis, climate change adaptive capacity analysis, and SWOT and SWOT Matrix analysis. Overall, the results of this study provide scientific implication on the research of evolution and perspectives of China’s wine industry from several aspects like historical, social, industrial, commercial and cultural variables. Even though China has dramatic expansion in domestic vineyard and increase in grape and wine production, compared with other countries, the competitiveness of Chinese wine production is still low with small export wine value and volume but the competitiveness general has been improved in a small scale in recent years. Wine producing regions are across the whole nation with diverse natural and social conditions. According to the Porter’s Diamond Model and the theory of industry competitiveness, Xinjiang has the highest competitiveness of Factor Condition; Beijing possesses the strongest competitiveness of Demand Conditions; Xinjiang ranks the first of Related and Supporting Industries and Shandong is the first in relate to Firm Strategy, Structure and Rivalry. For the Total Competitiveness, Shandong has outstanding advantages. For climate change, a general tendency of increasing temperatures and accumulated temperature, water scarcity with increasing number of frost-free days and higher frequency of extreme events, all of which will bring both challenges and opportunities to the young Chinese wine industry. Climate change adaptive capacity of Chinese wine industry is analyzed and adaptive strategies are provided at policy, financial, technical, institutional and collaborative level. According to SWOT and SWOT Matrix theory, 6 internal factors for Strength, 9 internal factors for Weakness, 9 external factors for Opportunity and 7 external factors for Threat, considering both traditional conditions such as wine production, wine policies as well as new conditions such as e-commerce, climate change and domestic economy trend, have been achieved in four sectors- Grape Producing, Wine Processing, Wine Selling and Wine consuming- of wine industry in China. For the further development of Wine industry in China, 8 strategies such as government support and establishment of wine laws at governmental level, 5 strategies such as a diverse and sustainable development at industrial level and 4 strategies such as broadcast of wine knowledge at business level have been provided.

Indonesia is the largest cinnamon producing country in the international market. The presence of competing countries causes competition for completed cinnamon demand in the international market. International trade requires that each country has specialization and the ability to be able to compete for existing markets. This study analyzes the competitiveness of Indonesia's cinnamon exports and the competitors (China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar) by looking at comparative and competitive advantages along with factors that can influence them. The analysis period used in this study is from 2000 to 2017. Competitiveness analysis is measured by using the Trade Specialization Index (TSI) and Export Competitive Index (XCI) analysis methods, while the analysis of factors that can affect competitiveness performance is analyzed using the panel data regression method. The results of this study indicated that Indonesia and the competitors have comparative advantages and tend to be cinnamon exporting countries in the International Market, besides that Indonesia and competitors (China, Vietnam, and Madagascar) have competitive advantages and cinnamon exports of these countries increase from the previous year, so that the country was able to compete for cinnamon exports on the International Market. Factors that can affect the performance of the export competitiveness of cinnamon in Indonesia and competitors are productivity, market share, export prices, and domestic consumption.

Fuel is an important aspect in the operation of ships that require high costs. The high cost of fuel is not followed by an automatic fuel monitoring process. By not using the fuel consumption monitoring method that works automatically, the shipping management does not know for sure the ship's fuel consumption is in accordance with the shipping mileage, thus triggering fraud committed by the ship's crew against the ship's fuel. Fuel consumption monitoring is carried out primarily to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. By following technological developments, Internet of Things (IoT) technology has begun to be applied in various industrial fields because it can transmit data in real-time via the internet network without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. In this research, the design of models and experiments related to a monitoring system for fuel consumption was carried out using sensors and microcontrollers integrated with the internet to obtain accurate and real-time data. The test results show that the volume of fuel available in the tank, the volume of fuel discharged, the flow rate of fuel, and the location of the system can be known by the user in real-time via the IoT website. Based on the results of measurements using an ultrasonic level sensor, it is known that the measurement results are quite accurate with a deviation of ± 0.5 cm. Meanwhile, the measurement results by the flow sensor are less accurate because the fuel flow only relies on the force of gravity.

The aim of the article. In the current conditions of the digital transformation of the global economy, approaches to forming pricing strategies in international marketing are undergoing significant changes. Traditional pricing methods, based on static models and periodic price adjustments, are giving way to digital tools that enable companies to promptly adapt prices to changes in market conditions, consumer behavior, and the competitive environment in real time. Digital technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, algorithmic and dynamic pricing, open new opportunities for price personalization, revenue optimization, and enhancement of companies’ competitiveness in international markets. Analysis results. The aim of this study is to substantiate the role and determine the specific features of using digital tools in pricing policy within international marketing, as well as to develop scientific and methodological approaches for their integration into the process of forming competitive pricing strategies for enterprises in global markets under digitalization conditions. To analyze digital pricing tools in international marketing, a comprehensive set of methods combining theoretical, quantitative, and practical approaches was applied. At the theoretical level, a systematic and comparative analysis of scientific sources and modern digital pricing strategies was used. For quantitative research, economic-mathematical methods were applied, including optimization models and machine learning algorithms, allowing the assessment of the impact of pricing strategies on sales volume, revenue, and consumer behavior across different countries. The article analyzes modern concepts of digital pricing and classification of models, including static, dynamic, segmented, and personalized pricing, as well as optimization and machine learning models. Key digital pricing policy tools, such as competitive price intelligence, revenue management systems (RMS), analytical platforms, and CRM, are examined, including their application in the international context while considering local economic, regulatory, and cultural specifics. Conclusions and directions for further research. Special attention is paid to the methodological aspects of integrating digital tools into the pricing strategy formation process, particularly the principles of systematization, dynamism, localization, and personalization. Based on the research findings, the necessity of using analytical demand forecasting, competitive modeling, and integration of market mechanisms to ensure effective international pricing is substantiated.

This paper analyzes trade balances and unit values in Hungarian and Slovenian bilateral agricultural, food, and forestry trade with Austria, Germany, and Italy, respectively, to distinguish types of one-way and two-way trade flows, categories of price competition, and categories of quality competition. Two-way trade flows prevail among trade types. In two-way bilateral trade, categories of price competition prevail over categories of nonprice competition, but vary across trading partners. In Hungarian trade, successful price and quality competition prevail, suggesting comparative advantages for Hungarian produce arising from available agricultural factor endowments and technological improvements in processing compared with bilateral EU trading partners. In Slovenian two-way trade, unsuccessful price and quality competition prevail, suggesting comparative trade disadvantages arising from agricultural and structural disadvantages compared with bilateral EU trading partners. Looking dynamically, we find no significant catch-up in successful competition, as for Hungary, both successful price and successful nonprice competition increased only for Austria, but deteriorated for Germany and Italy. For Slovenia, successful price and nonprice competition remain at a similar level as Austria, but decline compared with Germany and Italy. The probability of remaining one-way trade is greater than the probability of staying within the same competition category in two-way trade. There are differences across countries and over individual years, but the mobility indices indicate decline in trade flow mobility, and thus, more stable trade patterns over time.

Chernivtsi region faces numerous challenges in the tourism industry, including imperfect infrastructure, insufficient awareness of the region among foreign tourists, and fluctuations in economic and political conditions that affect tourist flows. The problem remains the unstable volume of foreign tourist flows, which directly affects the financial stability of local hotels, restaurants, and services. The study is designed to reveal the factors that shape these fluctuations and determine which aspects of development can support an increase in the number of foreign visitors in the region. The publication reveals the features of the development of foreign tourism in Chernivtsi region during 2000-2023. The main factors that had the greatest impact on the development of this type of tourism activity were identified. It was found that the largest decline in the number of foreign tourists was due to Russian aggression and the COVID-19 pandemic. The socio-economic and political instability in Ukraine also had a significant impact on the formation of foreign tourist flows. Analysis of the data obtained allows us to distinguish 2 periods of the impact of foreign tourism on the development of tourist services in the Chernivtsi region. The first period covers the period from 2000 to 2013. During this period of time, the ratio of foreign tourism to domestic was mostly higher than average values or close to average indicators. The smallest impact of foreign tourism during this period was observed in 2011, when the share of foreign tourists in relation to the number of domestic tourists was only 8.5%, which is 1.5% less than average values. In 2003, it was 9.5%, thus approaching average values. However, in 2006 and 2007, the greatest impact of foreign citizens on the development of tourism was observed. In these years, their number approached 20% (19.3% in 2006 and 19.7% in 2007) of the number of domestic tourists visiting the region. In other years, the share of foreign tourists relative to domestic ones was higher than the average values and fluctuated within 10-15%. The second period covers 2014-2020. During this time, there is a slight impact of foreign tourism on the development of tourism in Chernivtsi region. The main reason for these processes is the beginning of Russian aggression and, as a result, the deterioration of Ukraine's security image in the international tourism market. In 2014, the share of foreign tourists relative to domestic ones was only 4.0%, and in 2018 it decreased to 2.7%. However, already in In 2019, it reached 10.5%, thus exceeding the average indicators. Foreign tourism in Chernivtsi region at the given stage of development of the tourist complex of Chernivtsi region does not meet the potential opportunities. Only every 10th tourist in the region who used the services of tour operators and travel agents is a foreigner. The greatest impact on the insufficient development of foreign tourism in the region is the Russian aggression, which has been going on for almost 12 years. Its consequence was the formation of a negative security image of Ukraine in the international tourist market and, as a result, a reduction in inbound tourist flows. However, the presence of a powerful recreational and tourist potential, as well as the interest in the development of foreign tourism of authorities and entrepreneurs working in the tourism business, create favorable conditions for the restoration of this type of tourism activity in the post-war period.

A number of concurrent technological and organizational developments in the office automation area offer an excellent opportunity to greatly improve information systems management. This paper will attempt to show how information systems control could be taken over by managers through office automation. The emphasis is first on showing how office automation can contribute in designing manageable and controllable information systems from offices. Next, some organizational implications are discussed including possible structural changes and roles of the involved actors. Finally, a research design approach is outlined. Recent well-publicized cruise and ferry ship accidents have been a wake-up call to the shipping industry. These events raise the need for ship owners to use more advanced risk management approaches. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) has become an integral part of modern corporations, especially in safety critical industries where unsafe operations can lead to catastrophic accidents that result in loss of life, huge financial losses and the potential demise of the corporation. This paper presents the current findings of an on-going research to determine the best implementation of a Risk Management System (RMS) integrated with the Safety Management System (SMS) at cruise and ferry operating companies. The hypothesis is that ship management companies with better enterprise risk management will have better safety records and stronger financial performance. The paper presents the results of the application of Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP)/Systems Theoretic Process and Analysis (STPA) to a ferry operator to analyse the organizational performance of their risk and safety management systems. Initial results from the analysis showed gaps in communication paths, lack of tracking of risks and limited involvement of senior management in the risk process. A preliminary approach to deriving key indicators is presented.

Purpose Digital sustainability involves the ability of industries and professionals to adapt to rapidly changing technological landscapes. Digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to radically change the maritime industry’s job landscape, especially with autonomous ships. International organisations currently do not formalise the education of maritime professionals and deck officers and need new formal modules. This study aims to contribute to this aspect by investigating learners’ experiences and knowledge gaps in the fundamentals of, as supported by the andragogy theory, topics such as computer programming, cybersecurity and statistics. Design/methodology/approach The research was carried out at Southampton Solent University, with samples of 105 students attending various MSc courses in maritime operations and deck cadet courses. The data was collected through an online survey. The two groups were compared and analysed using a chi-square test. Findings The results show that the percentage of MSc students with previous training in statistics, computer programming and cybersecurity courses was 37%, 13% and 16%, respectively. The deck officers’ training in the same areas was 06%, 09% and 09%. The results of this study were used to develop a new maritime digital module to focus on these topics. Originality/value The paper highlights digital sustainability’s significance in adapting education and training courses. Ship management companies and higher education institutions must urgently meet the demands of digitalisation and AI in the maritime industry. It highlights the necessity of addressing current knowledge gaps and implementing new educational modules to ensure the sustainable development of digital skills among maritime professionals and cadets.

In recent years there has been a growing use of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development concepts, both as international policy frameworks and as self-regulating business models. The International Maritime Organisation, guided by its recent commitment to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, has acknowledged and encouraged the engagement of these principles to the shipping industry. However, the literature review showed some limited research to their practical application and understanding at the ship management level. Through an adopted case study strategy and applied content analysis method, this paper explores how CSR and sustainable development are integrated and diffused into the corporate governance structure and organisational processes of a shipping company. The results underscore the extensive handling of aspects of CSR and sustainable development throughout company's strategy and organisational processes. However, company issues falling within fair operating practices and areas of community involvement do appear to be lagging behind.
