15 - RDB Database Access from CGI Scripts

Psychological studies implementing the World-Wide Web as a data collection medium have traditionally been constrained to data obtained from surveys or from within-subjects comparisons. Common gateway interface (CGI) scripts, however, provide researchers with a means of collecting data for between-subjects comparisons. This paper provides a description of the information flow between the user (subject) and the experimenter by referencing a completed between-subjects assignment CGI. A current online cognitive psychology experiment serves as an example of the utility of CGIs as subject assignment mechanisms. Server-side and client-side scripts are compared for effectiveness at data collection, with these types of designs in mind.

We implement the PBSM (Protocol-Based Security Module) system which guarantees the secure data transmission under web circumstances. There are two modules to implement for the PBSM architecture. One is Web Server Security Module (WSSM) which is working on a web server, the other is the Winsock Client Security Module (WSCSM) which is working on a client. The WSCSM security module decrypts the encrypted HTML document that is received from the security web server The decrypted HTML document is displayed on the screen of a client. The WSSM module contains the encryption part for HTML file and the decryption part for CGI (Common Gateway Interface). We also implement the proposed idea at the web system.

Traditional document construction, while potentially concurrent and occasionally collaborative, is rarely both. As a result, opportunities for compressing time to the first draft and increasing content value can not be easily leveraged. Further, the absence of a framework that supports collaboration constrains the potential for continuous document evolution (i.e., a living document). These conditions stem from not only lack of technology application, but equally an evolution in document construction culture. The Internet serves as a collection of models in which varying levels of collaboration are supported. For example, news groups and e- mail permit dialogues in both broadcast and directed modes, and HTML formatted files provide a forum for hyperlinking multi-media documentation. These technologies, however, exist in isolation and do not individually provide the services necessary for supporting collaboration during concurrent document construction. While commercially-available document- centered frameworks are emerging as viable virtual integration environments, their fairly minimal level of integration with Internet protocols and standards (most notably HTTP and HTML) constrain widespread use within organizational intranets. The lack of native support for HTML mandates deliberate conversion steps for access by common client applications (e.g., WWW browsers). As a result, GRC International, Inc., (GRCI) initiated development of a WWW-based, virtual integration environment (VIE) in which documentation contributors, integrators and reviewers could collaborate using common Internet client applications for user access. The VIE was developed as a collection of services interfaced to an HTTP server via the common gateway interface (CGI). These services implemented as a single CGI program dynamically construct the VIE user interface to reflect continuing updates to documentation submissions, review, and revisions. Contributions submitted as MIME-encoded e-mail messages may be integrated as new documents or as revisions without requiring the user to understand HTML or the underlying document storage implementation.

In this paper, we combine the mature technology of Web with the embedded and fully utilize the advantages of both. Applied the embedded Web technology in the field of equipment condition monitoring, the equipment remote monitoring system is designed based on embedded Web. Firstly, the function and structure of the system are designed. Based on ARM9 technology, the hardware part of system is designed by using of Samsung's S3C2410, ADC0809 and DM9000 chips. Secondly, based on the commonly Web design technology, the embedded Web server is designed by integrating embedded CGI (common gateway interface), ActiveX and Java Applet technology. Finally, the problem of communication security is considered. The System can complete the remote access, monitoring and maintenance operations of equipment through the network and Web browser. Practical operations show that the system can decrease system running cost and improve maintaining efficiency. It has wide application prospect and great popularization value.

The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a method used by web servers to run external programs (known as CGI scripts or CGI programs), typically to generate web content dynamically. Whenever a web page queries a database, or a user submits a form, a CGI script is usually called upon to do the work.KeywordsEmpty StringExcellent BookPrint HeaderCommon Gateway InterfaceBlank LineThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

To avoid the shortcomings of inefficiency of manual collection, complicated wiring of cable network monitoring and difficult maintenance, the design of intelligent greenhouse monitoring system featuring WSN(wireless sensor network) was developed, which combined sensors with ZigBee wireless network technology. The system realizes wireless collection and transmission of data and information with ZigBee technology, which transmits data and controlling information to the internet through the CGI(common gateway interface), enabling operators check data and control in a real-time manner from the remote PC, and then realizing the true remote monitoring.

Multimedia on the World Wide Web refers to not only the text-based transfers, but in addition involves audio, and video. When a client makes a request to the server using the conventional HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), the server responds by sending the requested document and terminates the established logical connection between the client and the server. The server does not maintain the status of any earlier logical connections made with the clients. However, for interactive multimedia applications involving audio, video, and messaging, a stateless protocol such as the HTTP is rather insufficient. Other plug in modules, and additional protocols are needed. Very helpful for the interactive multimedia applications is a working knowledge of the CGI (common gateway interface), Java and Java applets along with the event handling, threading and Java script procedures. For the three dimensional images, VRML (virtual reality modeling language) and the associated software modules are very useful. In this article, the authors would present and analyze the above mentioned tools needed to really accomplish interactive multimedia applications on the Web.

Chapter 6 - Interacting with the user using ASP.NET forms

Using archetypes is a promising approach in providing semantic interoperability among healthcare systems. To realise archetype based interoperability, the healthcare systems need to discover the existing archetypes, based on their semantics; annotate their archetypes with ontologies; compose templates from archetypes and retrieve corresponding data from the underlying medical information systems. In this paper, we describe how ebXML Registry semantic constructs can be used for annotating, storing, discovering and retrieving archetypes. For semantic annotation of archetypes, we present an example of an archetype metadata ontology and describe the techniques to access archetype semantics through ebXML query facilities. We present a GUI query facility and describe how the stored procedures, which we introduce, move the semantic support beyond what is currently available in ebXML registries. We also address how archetype data can be retrieved from clinical information systems by using ebXML web services. A comparison of web service technology with the ebXML messaging system is provided to justify the reasons for using web services.

To help universities achieve their goals, it is important to align managerial functionalities side by side with educational aspects. Universities consume University Management Information Systems (UMIS) to handle managerial aspects as they do with Learning Management Systems (LMS) to achieve learning objectives. UMIS advances LMS by decades and has reached stable and mature consistency level. LMS is the newly acquired solution in Universities; compared to UMIS, and so adopting LMSs in universities can be achieved via three different deployment approaches. First approach believes in LMS ability to replace UMIS and performing its functionalities. Second approach presents the idea of extending UMIS to include LMS functionalities. Third approach arises from the shortages of the two proposed approaches and present integration between both as the appropriate deployment approach. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a design pattern that can be used as a suitable architectural solution to align UMIS and LMS. SOA can be utilized in universities to overcome some of information systems’ challenges like the integration between UMIS and LMS. This paper presents the current situation at Mansoura University; Egypt, presents integration as the most suitable solution, and evaluates three different implementation techniques: Dynamic Query, Stored Procedure, and Web services. Evaluation concludes that though SOA enhanced many different aspects of both UMIS and LMS; and consequently university overall. It is not recommended to adopt SOA via Web services as the building unit of the system, but as the interdisciplinary interface between systems.

Developers have seen great improvements in server-side web development in the past few years. We’ve gone from complex, non-scalable Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts to some elegant enterprise-class solutions using technologies such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Java Servlets, and JavaServer Pages (JSP). Unfortunately, with this explosion of new technology come a lot of misguided efforts by well-intentioned developers.

In order to monitor the scenic spot and transmit the collected data to the users, established the integrated sensing system based on the embedded Linux .Used the sensors to collect the different data and pictures and then they were transmitted by the wired and wireless mode.Set up the small Web server by the Boa (small Web server) and realized the integrated Web technology and CGI (Common Gateway Interface) program.According to the difference information of the scenic spot, the mobile platform collected the needed data and transmitted it to the control platform by the ZigBee wireless module and displayed in the embedded platform. The administrator can realize monitoring all the spots of the scenic and control the terminal equipments in the whole day.

The present chapter explains how to build graphical user interfaces as Web pages. For example, we shall create an interactive Web interface to a computational service and display the results graphically. Interactive or dynamic Web pages can be realized in different ways: by Java applets that are downloaded and executed on the client’s computer system by JavaScript code as part of the HTML code in the Web page by programs on the Web server communicating with the Web page through a Common Gateway Interface (CGI).

IntroductionIATROTEK is a bilingual (Greek, English) database containing the references of about 15.000 articles (abstracts included), which have been published in 75 Greek biomedical journals since 1982. Until recently, the input in this database was performed by manual typing and the retrieval was available to the users only off line. Input automation was started before six months and on-line use of the database was officially inaugurated on May 8th, 1999 (www.mednet.gr/iatrotek).MethodsThe on-line version of IATROTEK is implemented on a Linux-based server running PostgreSQL database server and Apache web server. All the software used is freeware. The user interface is comprised of several HTML forms, which are accessible by any WWW browser, and it is supported by certain CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripts written in Perl. Searching can be performed providing single terms or terms combined by boolean operators, on the following fields: title, authors, key-words, abstract in both Greek and English. Matching records include the title and reference of the articles as well as links to the Greek and the English abstracts. Links providing further searching on authors' names and key-words are available on the page of abstracts. Concerning the input in the database, it is performed by the use of appropriate filters (format transformers) on the data provided by the publishers. Under construction is the automation of key-word assigning procedure and a stemming algorithm for Greek words.ResultsDuring the first fifteen days of its on-line operation, the database is queried with a mean rate of 48 requests/day (20% of them from abroad). Bearing in mind the small number of Greek doctors having access to the Web (2,500-3,000 out of 35,000), this is a fact signifying their warm interest on the on-line use of the IATROTEK.DiscussionCompared to the availability of the international medical literature through the Web, the literature written in national languages is not equally favored by the Internet explosion. Efforts, like that of IATROTEK on-line, towards the dissemination of locally produced medical information through the Web will overcome the serious obstacles confronted by the national journals.
