Traditional identity verification of students based on the human proctoring approach can cause a scam identity verification and ineffective processing time, particularly among vast groups of students. Most student identification cards outdated personal information. Several biometric recognition approaches have been proposed to strengthen students’ identity verification. Most educational adoption technologies struggle with evaluation and validation techniques to ensure that biometric recognition systems are unsuitable for utilization and implementation for student identity verification. This study presents the internet of things to develop flexible biometric recognition systems and an approach to assess the quality of biometric systems for educational use by investigating the effectiveness of identity verification of various biometric recognition technologies compared to the traditional verification method. The unimodal, multimodal, and semi-multimodal biometric technologies were tested using the developed internet of things-base biometric recognition systems examined by applying the proposed quality metrics of scoring factors based on accuracy, error rate, processing time, and cost. Hundreds of undergraduate exam takers were a sample group. Key findings indicate that the designed and presented systems suitably attain identity verification of exam students using a unimodal biometric. The unimodal facial biometric system promises excellent support. A unimodal fingerprint biometric system ensures second excellent aid for student identity verification. However, multimodal and semi-multimodal biometric systems provide better accuracy with fewer handling times and higher costs. This study contributes significantly to the knowledge of utilizing biometric recognition for identity verification in smart educational applications.

With an increasing demand for stringent security systems, automated identification of individuals based on biometric methods has been a major focus of research and development over the last decade. Biometric recognition analyses unique physiological traits or behavioral characteristics, such as an iris, face, retina, voice, fingerprint, hand geometry, keystrokes or gait. The iris has a complex and unique structure that remains stable over a person's lifetime, features that have led to its increasing interest in its use for biometric recognition. In this study, we proposed a technique incorporating Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT) for the extraction of the optimum features of an iris and reducing the runtime needed for iris templates classification. The idea of using DWT behind PCA is to reduce the resolution of the iris template. DWT converts an iris image into four frequency sub-bands. One frequency sub-band instead of four has been used for further feature extraction by using PCA. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates the efficient performance of the proposed technique.

Biometric recognition systems are finding applications in more and more civilian fields because they proved to be reliable and accurate. Among the other technologies, ultrasound has the main merit of acquiring 3D images, which allows it to provide more distinctive features and gives it a high resistance to spoof attacks. This work reviews main research activities devoted to the study and development of ultrasound sensors and systems for biometric recognition purposes. Several transducer technologies and different ultrasound techniques have been experimented on for imaging biometric characteristics like fingerprints, hand vein pattern, palmprint, and hand geometry. In the paper, basic concepts on ultrasound imaging techniques and technologies are briefly recalled and, subsequently, research studies are classified according to the kind of technique used for collecting the ultrasound image. Overall, the overview demonstrates that ultrasound may compete with other technologies in the expanding market of biometrics, as the different commercial fingerprint sensors integrated in portable electronic devices like smartphones or tablets demonstrate.

Biometric recognition through 3D ultrasound hand geometry

Due to peg-free system for image acquisition, it is obvious to have a motion of user’s hand. Motion activity creates the blurring effect in captured images, which leads to the false identification of a person. In such cases, image deblurring is required to restore the image. This paper proposes hand geometry- and palm texture-based person identification system with motion blur deblurring of palm images. The deblurring process may generate the ringing artifacts. The quality of the restoration of a motion blurred image is depending on the estimation of motion blur parameters, blur angle and blur length. In this paper, Radon transform and cepstral method have been used for the blur parameter estimation. Point spread function (PSF) can be constructed using blur parameters. For the deblurring of the palm images, L2/TV regularization based on augmented Lagrangian method has been used. It deblurs the image with the removal of ringing artifacts. Restored images are further used in the biometric system to analyze the robustness of the system against the motion blur. This system is tested on a database collected from 100 people. 99.5% genuine acceptance rate (GAR) is achieved for bimodal system against motion blur for discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based features. Equal error rate (EER) achieved is 1.1719.

The ability to recognize people uniquely and to associate personal attributes such as name and nationality with them has been very important to the fabric of human society. Nowadays, modern societies have an explosion in population growth and increased mobility which necessitated building advanced identity management systems for recording and maintaining people’s identities. In the last decades, biometrics has played an important role in recognizing people instead of traditional ways such as passwords and keys which can be forgotten or be stolen. Biometric systems employ physiological and/or behavioral characteristics of people to verify their identities. Biometric authentication systems operating in real world environments using a single modality are found to be insecure and unreliable due to numerous limitations. Multimodal biometric systems have better accuracy and reliability due to the use of multiple biometric traits to authenticate a claimed identity or perform identification. In this paper a novel method for person identification using multimodal biometrics with hand geometry and palmprint biometric traits is proposed. The geometrical information embedded in the user hand and palmprint images are brought out through the graph representations. The topological characterization of the image moments, represented as the virtual nodes of the palmprint image graph is a novel feature of this work. The user hand and palmprint images are represented as weighted undirected graphs and spectral characteristics of the graphs are extracted as features vectors. The feature vectors of the hand geometry and palmprint are fused at feature level to obtain a graph spectral feature vector to represent the person. User identification is performed by using a multiclass support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The experimental results demonstrate, an appreciable performance giving identification rate of 99.19% for multimodal biometric after feature level fusion of hand geometry and palmprint modalities. The performance is investigated by conducting the experiments separately for handgeometry, palmprint and fused feature vectors for person identification. Experimental results show that the proposed multimodal system achieves better performance than the unimodal cues, and can be used in high security applications. Further comparison show that it is better than similar other multimodal techniques.

Traditional authentication methods such as passwords are susceptible to easy hacking, and as technology progresses, the demand is on the rise for more reliable and secure recognition systems, which can be used in surveillance and biometrics applications etc. A biometric recognition system of individuals is established on the unique features of the individual. Multi modal biometric systems represent a significant research field with widespread applications of recognition systems. Unimodal biometric systems have a variety of issues, including nonuniversality and noisy data. Certain limitations and difficulties can be partially addressed with the use of multi modal biometric systems. In this paper, a survey on multi-biometric systems is presented to highlight the challenges, strengths and weaknesses of some of the research discussed in this study which contributes to enhancing the understanding and development of robust and reliable biometric authentication solutions, essential for ensuring security in various domains as well as suggest directions for future work. The aim of this paper is to exploit the best possible combinations of hand geometry, palmprint and offline signatures for multimodal biometric systems by integrating the information at score level fusion. Initially, Zernike moments are extracted for each biometric trait of a person and study the identification accuracy. Subsequently, the effect of identification accuracy using score level fusion of multiple traits of a person is studied. Experiments are conducted on GPDS hand geometry database, PolyU two dimensional palmprint database and UOM offline signature database to assess the actual advantage of the fusion of multiple biometric traits performed at score level fusion, in comparison to the unimodal biometric system. The proposed methodology has shown promising results.

Biometrics refers to the automatic identification (or verification) of an individual (or a claimed identity) by using certain physical or behavioral traits associated with the person. By using biometrics it is possible to establish an identity based on `who you are¿, rather than by `what you possess¿ (e.g., an ID card) or `what you remember¿ (e.g., a password). Therefore, biometric systems use fingerprints, hand geometry, iris, retina, face, vasculature patterns, signature, gait, palmprint, or voiceprint to determine a person¿s identity. The purpose of this tutorial is two-fold: (a) to introduce the fundamentals of biometric technology from a pattern recognition and signal processing perspective by discussing some of the prominent techniques used in the field; and (b) to convey the recent advances made in this field especially in the context of security, privacy and forensics. To this end, the design of a biometric system will be discussed from the viewpoint of four commonly used biometric modalities - fingerprint, face, hand, and iris. Various algorithms that have been developed for processing these modalities will be presented. Methods to protect the biometric templates of enrolled users will also be outlined. In particular, the possibility of performing biometric matching in the cryptographic domain will be discussed. The tutorial will also introduce concepts in biometric fusion (i.e., multibiometrics) in which multiple sources of biometric information are consolidated. Finally, there will be a discussion on some of the challenges encountered by biometric systems when operating in a real-world environment and some of the methods used to address these challenges.

A biometric system provides automatic identification of an individual based on a unique feature or characteristic possessed by the individual. Iris recognition is regarded as the most reliable and accurate biometric identification system available. An approach for accurate Biometric Recognition and Identification of Human Iris Patterns using Neural Network has been illustrated by gopikrishnan et. al. It has been concluded by Yingzi Du et. al that the partial iris portion of the iris pattern describes the uniqueness and the pupil has no direct effect on the accuracy of the biometric recognition. In this paper the Iris recognition has been carried out employing a template of size 10 × 480 pixels instead of 20 × 480 pixels as employed in the earlier paper. The results of the two sizes of the templates have been compared and it has been observed that the accuracy of the results obtained with the limited template size is comparable with that of the one with the full size. The reason for this is also discussed in this paper. The improved methodology suggested has resulted in the reduction of the space requirement as well as time complexity with no loss in accuracy. This paper also provides results of iris recognition performed applying Hamming distance, Feed forward back propagation, Cascade forward back propagation, Elman forward back propagation and perceptron. It has been established that the method suggested applying perceptron provides the best accuracy in respect of iris recognition with no major additional computational complexity.

Face is one of the popular and easiest ways of biometric to distinguish the individual identity. It has various applications in computer vision such as imposing security, entertainment, forensic, finding missing persons, etc. Face Recognition is a successful biometric identification system including fingerprints, iris, retina, hand geometry, etc that uses personal characteristics to identify the person's identity. Several challenges such as facial expressions, pose variations, occlusion, lighting conditions or illuminations, aging, etc have the great impact on the success of face recognition and reduce the performance of a system. This paper first discusses the various datasets available in the field of face recognition system with their characteristics. Later, it proposed a face recognition method using Haar cascade feature extraction and local binary pattern. Preprocessing, face selection and classification are primary steps in any face recognition system. However, the most important and crucial stage responsible for the successful face recognition system is the feature extraction.

With the use of computers and Internet in every major activity of our society, security is increasingly important. Biometric recognition is not only challenging but also computationally demanding. This chapter aims develop an iris biometric system. The iris has the advantages of uniqueness, stableness, anti-spoof, non-invasiveness and efficiency and could be applied in almost every area (banking, forensics, access control, etc.). The performance of a biometric classification system is largely depending on the techniques used for feature extraction. Inspired by the biological plausibility of ordinal measures, we propose their employment for iris representation and recognition. Qualitative measurement, associated to the relative ordering of different characteristics, is defined as ordinal measurement. Besides the proposing of a novel, fast and robust, ordinal based feature extraction method, the chapter also considers the problem of designing the decision making model so as to obtain an efficient and effective biometric system. In the literature, there are different approaches for iris recognition, nevertheless, there are still challenging open problems in improving the accuracy, robustness, security and ergonomics of biometric systems.

Nowadays, biometric recognition represents an integral component of identity management and access control systems, replacing PINs or passwords. However, the wide deployment of biometric recognition systems in the past decades has raised numerous privacy concerns regarding the storage and use of biometric data. Due to the fact that the link between individuals and their biometric characteristics, e.g. fingerprints or iris, is strong and permanent, biometric reference data (templates) need to be protected in order to safeguard individuals' privacy and biometric systems' security. In particular, unprotected biometric templates can be abused to crossmatch biometric databases, i.e. tracking individuals without consent, and to launch presentation attacks employing specific inversion techniques. Technologies of biometric template protection offer solutions to privacy preserving biometric authentication, which improves the public confidence and acceptance of biometric systems. While biometric template protection has been an active research topic over the last 20 years, proposed solutions are still far from gaining practical acceptance. The existing gap between theory and practice, which results in a trade-off between privacy protection and recognition accuracy, is caused by numerous factors. To facilitate a standardized design and application of biometric template protection schemes, researchers have to solve several open problems. This chapter provides an overview of state-of-the-art technologies of biometric template protection and discusses main issues and challenges.

In today’s world many times need the human identification for the purpose of security of information, authentication, search criminals, find missing child. The biometric recognition uses for human identification because the biometrical characteristics are unique, and it’s based on two types are behavioural and physiological characteristics. This paper include biometric recognition system overview fingerprint recognition, face recognition, iris recognition, speech recognition and gesture recognition. overview include the various types of algorithm using in biometric recognition system are discrete cosine transform, key local variation, minutiae matching algorithm, PCA, active contour algorithm, fuzzy cmeans clustering, LPCC Algorithm, LDA Algorithm and Fuzzy Neural Network.
