An introduction to biometrics

The ability to recognize people uniquely and to associate personal attributes such as name and nationality with them has been very important to the fabric of human society. Nowadays, modern societies have an explosion in population growth and increased mobility which necessitated building advanced identity management systems for recording and maintaining people’s identities. In the last decades, biometrics has played an important role in recognizing people instead of traditional ways such as passwords and keys which can be forgotten or be stolen. Biometric systems employ physiological and/or behavioral characteristics of people to verify their identities. There are different biometric modalities that can be used to recognize people such as fingerprints, face, hand geometry, voice, iris, signature, etc. In this paper, a comprehensive overview have been provided on the major issues of biometric systems including general biometric system architecture, major biometric traits, biometric systems performance, and some relevant works. http://dx.doi.org/10.25130/tjps.24.2019.120

This research paper aims to contribute to the field of biometric attendance systems. Biometric system which uses unique biological traits like fingerprints for identification and authentication, offers several benefits over traditional authentication methods like passwords or ID cards. The benefits of using biometric system can be enhanced security, convenience and high efficiency, reduced risk of fraud, cost-effective in long run, accountability, scalability, multi-factor authentication, etc. In most of the organizations or institutes attendance is taken by the traditional methods like register book but this method takes time then attendance from these registers is uploaded to server for further attendance report of students. To withstand this problem, we have proposed an IoT based multipurpose biometric authentication system. We have developed a portable system that includes fingerprint sensors to recognize the fingerprint of various students and show the details of the students whose fingerprints have been scanned. The data from the fingerprint scanner is sent to the Raspberry PI server using Wi-Fi. We also have also designed a user interface for students and faculty to view and manage the students and their attendance. The attendance report can be exported to excel file any time faculty want the report. The biometric system provides 80% efficiency over the regular attendance methods.

Template-Protection-Techniken stellen eine wichtige Ergänzung zu biometrischen Systemen, um das gewünschte Sicherheitsniveau zu erreichen und die Anforderungen an den Schutz der Privatsphäre zu erfüllen. Diese Techniken ermöglichen Erneuerung und Widerruf der Referenzendaten in biometrischen Systemen. In dieser Arbeit wird ein systematisches Evaluierungsframework entwickelt, das sich an die wesentlichen Kriterien und Anforderungen an biometrische Template-Protection-Verfahren festhält. Seine Anwendbarkeit wird durch die Analyse der verschiedenen Algorithmen demonstriert. Die in dieser Arbeit präsentierte Evaluierung ist grundlegend für eine vollständige Analyse. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht es einen Nachweis der Sicherheit und Einhaltung der Privatsphäre. Es schafft eine Basis für Zertifizierung und Benchmark der Template-Protection-Verfahren.

Traditional identity verification of students based on the human proctoring approach can cause a scam identity verification and ineffective processing time, particularly among vast groups of students. Most student identification cards outdated personal information. Several biometric recognition approaches have been proposed to strengthen students’ identity verification. Most educational adoption technologies struggle with evaluation and validation techniques to ensure that biometric recognition systems are unsuitable for utilization and implementation for student identity verification. This study presents the internet of things to develop flexible biometric recognition systems and an approach to assess the quality of biometric systems for educational use by investigating the effectiveness of identity verification of various biometric recognition technologies compared to the traditional verification method. The unimodal, multimodal, and semi-multimodal biometric technologies were tested using the developed internet of things-base biometric recognition systems examined by applying the proposed quality metrics of scoring factors based on accuracy, error rate, processing time, and cost. Hundreds of undergraduate exam takers were a sample group. Key findings indicate that the designed and presented systems suitably attain identity verification of exam students using a unimodal biometric. The unimodal facial biometric system promises excellent support. A unimodal fingerprint biometric system ensures second excellent aid for student identity verification. However, multimodal and semi-multimodal biometric systems provide better accuracy with fewer handling times and higher costs. This study contributes significantly to the knowledge of utilizing biometric recognition for identity verification in smart educational applications.

Biometric authentication systems operating in real world environments using a single modality are found to be insecure and unreliable due to numerous limitations. Multimodal biometric systems have better accuracy and reliability due to the use of multiple biometric traits to authenticate a claimed identity or perform identification. In this paper a novel method for person identification using multimodal biometrics with hand geometry and palmprint biometric traits is proposed. The geometrical information embedded in the user hand and palmprint images are brought out through the graph representations. The topological characterization of the image moments, represented as the virtual nodes of the palmprint image graph is a novel feature of this work. The user hand and palmprint images are represented as weighted undirected graphs and spectral characteristics of the graphs are extracted as features vectors. The feature vectors of the hand geometry and palmprint are fused at feature level to obtain a graph spectral feature vector to represent the person. User identification is performed by using a multiclass support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The experimental results demonstrate, an appreciable performance giving identification rate of 99.19% for multimodal biometric after feature level fusion of hand geometry and palmprint modalities. The performance is investigated by conducting the experiments separately for handgeometry, palmprint and fused feature vectors for person identification. Experimental results show that the proposed multimodal system achieves better performance than the unimodal cues, and can be used in high security applications. Further comparison show that it is better than similar other multimodal techniques.

Performance of modern automated pattern recognition (PR) systems is heavily influenced by accuracy of their feature extraction algorithm. Many papers have demonstrated uses of deep learning techniques in PR, but there is little evidence on using them as feature extractors. Our goal is to contribute to this field and perform a comparative study between classical used methods in feature extraction and deep learning techniques. For that, a biometric recognition system, which is a PR application, is developed and evaluated using a proposed evaluation metric called expected risk probability. In our study, two deeply learned features, based on PCANet and DCTNet deep learning techniques, are used with two biometric modalities that are palmprint and palm-vein. Subsequently, the efficiency of these techniques is compared with various classical feature extraction methods. From the obtained results, we drew our conclusions on a very positive impact of deep learning techniques on overall recognition rate, and thus these techniques significantly outperform the classical techniques.

In the case of most of the biometric recognition systems, the type of features extracted from the biometric template depends on the biometric modality. A generalized feature representation is convenient and efficient in multimodal biometric system as the complexity involved in fusing or protecting the heterogeneous features corresponding to different biometric modalities can be avoided. The dimensionality of the features can also be reduced effectively if we can extract generalized feature vectors without compromising the matching performance. This work proposes two schemes: (i) a generalized yet efficient matching technique based on the cosine similarity of the principal component subspaces (ii) a protection scheme by fusing the feature vectors of multiple modalities in principal components domain and matching in that protected domain. The key feature of the proposed protection scheme over existing schemes is that it does not require a user specific key for ensuring the irreversibility. User specific key is used only for ensuring the revocability of the protected template. Results show that the proposed method is able to achieve a matching performance of $$98.57\%$$ for a multimodal system with face, fingerprint, and finger vein templates in the fused domain.Ragendhu, S. Biometric-based security has been researched and tested for a few decades, but has only recently entered into the public consciousness because of high-profile applications especially since the events of 9/11. Many companies and government departments are now implementing and deploying biometric technologies to secure areas, maintain security records, protect borders and maintain law enforcement at borders and entry points. Biometrics is the science of verifying the identity of an individual through his/her physiological measurements, e.g. fingerprints, hand geometry, etc. or behavioural traits, e.g. voice and signature. Since biometric identifiers are associated permanently with the user they are more reliable than token- or knowledge-based authentication methods such as identification card (that can be lost or stolen), password (that can be forgotten), etc.

Biometric authentication systems offer a secure and convenient method of verifying the identity of individuals based on their unique physiological or behavioral traits. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of biometric authentication systems, focusing on the principles, technologies, applications, challenges, and future directions in the field. The survey covers various biometric modalities, including fingerprint recognition, iris recognition, facial recognition, keystroke dynamics, voice recognition, and gait analysis. Key topics discussed include the use of multi-modal biometric systems, continuous authentication, machine learning, and AI in biometrics, and biometric encryption. The paper also explores the implementation of biometric authentication in access control systems, financial transactions, healthcare systems, and government and law enforcement. Challenges such as security and privacy concerns, spoofing and impersonation, scalability and integration, and ethical and legal issues are addressed. Future research opportunities include improving accuracy and reliability, enhancing security and privacy, addressing societal and ethical concerns, and integrating biometric authentication with the Internet of Things (IoT).

Biometric systems have been actively emerging in various industries in the past few years and continue to provide higher-security features for access control systems. Many types of unimodal biometric systems have been developed. However, these systems are only capable of providing low- to mid-range security features. Thus, for higher-security features, the combination of two or more unimodal biometrics (multiple modalities) is required. In this paper, we propose a multimodal biometric system for person recognition using face, fingerprint, and finger vein images. Addressing this problem, we propose an efficient matching algorithm that is based on secondary calculation of the Fisher vector and uses three biometric modalities: face, fingerprint, and finger vein. The three modalities are combined and fusion is performed at the feature level. Furthermore, based on the method of feature fusion, the paper studies the fake feature which appears in the practical scene. The liveness detection is append to the system, detect the picture is real or fake based on DCT, then remove the fake picture to reduce the influence of accuracy rate, and increase the robust of system. The experimental results showed that the designed framework can achieve an excellent recognition rate and provide higher security than a unimodal biometric-based system, which are very important for a IoMT platform.

In recent years large number of emerging automated applications faces the need to have recognition abilities of persons using their own self biometrics, before they can access the applications services. Nowadays, Biometric recognition is used, it can be used as automatic identification or automatic verification of persons based on their physiological or behavioral characteristics. There are no perfect biometric measurements; each biometry has its advantages and limitations. Each biometry requires specific vital identity to answer the identification or verification question. The suitability of a particular biometry for a particular application depends on many factors. Hand geometry/shape is a very simple biometric technology that uses the measurements of human hand to verify the identity of the individuals. The measurements include the distance between certain mark points, shape and width of fingers and size of palm. The biometric systems that employing hand geometry become widely used since they have high public acceptance. This article aims to survey several articles found in literature about hand based biometric system, and to compare different methods of biometric recognition that based on hand geometry.

The emerging of The Law 23 of 2006 on Population Administration is a step to control the issuance of population and the development of population database. Residents are allowed to have one ID card only. The issuance of a single ID card and the establishment of an accurate and a complete population database require technological support to ensure the accuracy of a person’s identity and the identity card which has a strong authentication method and a high identity data security to prevent counterfeiting and duplication. The use of biometric systems in electronic Id card (e-KTP) makes it possible to the owner of the e-KTP to be connected into a single national database. Therefore each resident requires one ID card only. The objective of this research is to explore the extent of the effectiveness and the efficiency of the use of biometric systems on the preparation of national database based on single-KTP number (NIK) in Bandung. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive analysis technique. The Measuring of the effectiveness and the efficiency is the dimensions of system quality Wilkinson. The effectiveness of the use of biometric systems in the process of e-KTP in Bandung is effectively categorized based on quality systems indicators such as: Relevancy, Capacity, Timeliness, Accessibility, Flexibility, Accuracy, Reliability, Security, Economy and Simplicity. The Efficiency of the use of the biometric system is quite efficient because the reviewing of the recording results can be done more quickly and automatically, biometric systems can increase productivity and efficiency as well as reduce job turnaround time in checking the accuracy of the data with the card owner.

This chapter will present a detailed overview of biometric systems and how they work. The system attributes, performance metrics, modalities are all discussed, alongside an analysis of attacks that exist against biometric systems. Given the limitations that exist in all biometric systems, a trend in biometric research is towards the use of multibiometric systems, which seek to overcome the issues through the application of multiple modalities, algorithms, instances or samples. These systems and the approaches that exist are presented. The chapter ends with a discussion of the efforts being made with the standardization of the domain - which has been the essential factor in bringing biometrics from a niche into the mainstream.

A biometric system provides automatic identification of an individual based on a unique feature or characteristic possessed by the individual. Iris recognition is regarded as the most reliable and accurate biometric identification system available. An approach for accurate Biometric Recognition and Identification of Human Iris Patterns using Neural Network has been illustrated by gopikrishnan et. al. It has been concluded by Yingzi Du et. al that the partial iris portion of the iris pattern describes the uniqueness and the pupil has no direct effect on the accuracy of the biometric recognition. In this paper the Iris recognition has been carried out employing a template of size 10 × 480 pixels instead of 20 × 480 pixels as employed in the earlier paper. The results of the two sizes of the templates have been compared and it has been observed that the accuracy of the results obtained with the limited template size is comparable with that of the one with the full size. The reason for this is also discussed in this paper. The improved methodology suggested has resulted in the reduction of the space requirement as well as time complexity with no loss in accuracy. This paper also provides results of iris recognition performed applying Hamming distance, Feed forward back propagation, Cascade forward back propagation, Elman forward back propagation and perceptron. It has been established that the method suggested applying perceptron provides the best accuracy in respect of iris recognition with no major additional computational complexity.

In recent years the security breaches and fraud transactions are increasing day by day. So there is a necessity for highly secure authentication technologies. The security of an authentication system can be strengthened by using Biometric system rather than the traditional method of authentication like Identity Cards (ID) and password which can be stolen easily. A biometric system works on biometric traits and fingerprint has the maximum share in market for providing biometric authentication as it is reliable, consistent and easy to capture. Although the biometric system is used to provide security to many applications but it is susceptible to different types of assaults too. Among all the modules of the biometric system which needs security, biometric template protection has received great consideration in the past years from the research community due to sensitivity of the biometric data stored in the form of template. A number of methods have been devised for providing template protection. Fuzzy vault is one of the cryptosystem based method of template security. The aim of fuzzy vault technique is to protect the precarious data with the biometric template in a way that only certified user can access the secret by providing valid biometric. In this paper, a modified version of fuzzy vault is presented to increase the level of security to the template and the secret key. The polynomial whose coefficients represent the key is transformed using an integral operator to hide the key where the key can no longer be derived if the polynomial is known to the attacker. The proposed fuzzy vault scheme also prevents the system from stolen key inversion attack. The results are achieved in terms of False Accept Rate (FAR), False Reject Rate (FRR), Genuine Acceptance Rate (GAR) by varying the degree of polynomial and number of biometric samples. It was calculated that for 40 users GAR was found to be 92%, 90%, 85% for degree of polynomial to be 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
