Abstract

Biometric-based security has been researched and tested for a few decades, but has only recently entered into the public consciousness because of high-profile applications especially since the events of 9/11. Many companies and government departments are now implementing and deploying biometric technologies to secure areas, maintain security records, protect borders and maintain law enforcement at borders and entry points. Biometrics is the science of verifying the identity of an individual through his/her physiological measurements, e.g. fingerprints, hand geometry, etc. or behavioural traits, e.g. voice and signature. Since biometric identifiers are associated permanently with the user they are more reliable than token- or knowledge-based authentication methods such as identification card (that can be lost or stolen), password (that can be forgotten), etc.
