The paper describes experiments that investigated the use of auditory stimuli (speech and non-speech sound) to communicate data in two information systems. These experiments were performed under a multimedia stock control system and a multimedia e-mail tool. Experiments using the multimedia stock control information system investigated rhythms and timbre to communicate windows and their associated functions as well as the simultaneous rise of speech and sound to communicate a large amount of information to users. Experiments using the multimedia e-mail tool investigated the use of tunes and short pitch sequences with visual stimuli to communicate information in browsing e-mail data. The paper also integrates experimental results front both systems and discusses the incorporation of auditory stimuli in interactive audio-visual or multimedia information systems. Auditory stimuli helped to communicate, complement or reinforce information that users received via the visual channel. These auditory technologies could also benefit visually impaired users of such systems. Results also indicated that the simultaneous use of sound and speech can be useful in the design of interactive multimedia information systems. The inclusion of auditory stimuli (including speech) in the design of information systems has the potential to maximise the volume of information communicated to users.

We categorize broadband multimedia services according to their required bit rates and their transport symmetries. We also describe typical access networks, their service coverages and migrations. According to our analysis, we propose ATM-based Multimedia Information and Communication System (AMICS) as an ATM based multimedia multi-service platform. AMICS consists of ATM backbone networks, ATM ring regional transport networks, and ATM access networks. The access network has an active double star configuration and provides multicast/statistical multiplexing functions. The multicast function in AMICS is evaluated using near-video-on-demand and CATV service simulations.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. This paper describes a novel mobility management scheme which is efficient for multi-media in-building mobile communication systems. Most in-building mobile communication systems will be realized in a pico-cellular structure. An in-building user mobility model to be used for designing a pico-cellular system's mobility management scheme is first established. Then proposed is a novel location registration and paging scheme which can simultaneously cope with the bursty location registration traffic and the increased paging traffic. In addition, this scheme can cope with the call set up delay requirements in multi-media communication. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated by computer simulation in which the user mobility model at lunch time in an office building is used.

Lastly, it presents a multibeam satellite configuration for this system.

Multimedia information and its databases are becoming an essential element for computer and telecommunication consideration in today’s world. Application areas in which attribute-based storage and retrieval is becoming a principal activity are among others, TV productions, video on demand, home entertainment, art galleries and museum management, architectural and engineering design, geographic information systems, finger print and image matching, find out citizenship by election card detail and so on. Other applications are related to the development of information superhighways. When the bandwidth needed for interactive multimedia will be available at home, each user could access a remote server containing very large image and video databases. In this scenario attribute-based storage and retrieval assumes a fundamental role. Also Multimedia Information Systems [7] can benefit of attribute-based retrieval technology; although they will mainly provide techniques to manage and distribute large amounts of multi-source multimedia information, automatic storage by attributes of images and data.

Multicast can be considered as an efficient computing service for sharing resources in the multimedia communication systems. Sharing communications are not easy to do in the mobility networks (MONETs) for the limited bandwidth and the overhead of tunneling. Multicast is an intuitive method to solve this problem. To improve the performance, the multicast topology should be redesigned for the MONETs. The Mobile Router Forwarding Scheme (MRFS) algorithm is proposed for this goal. Compare with other schemes we surveyed, we can find that MRFS can reduce the storage cost for every Mobile Router (MR) especially in the TLMR (Top level MR) for the tree topology of NEMO. We also analyzed the performance of MRFS with the numerical approach and the simulation tool network simulator version 2 (NS2). The results show that MRFS algorithm outperforms other multicast protocols. To show the performance of the proposed schemes, we design a lot of experiments to analyze the performance. The experiment analysis could be an analysis model for the complex system which is not easy to be analyzed by the mathematic model.

In this tutorial, problems and solutions in Multi-Media Information Systems (MMIS) isdiscussed. In particular, important MMIS issues are presented and their solution using AI aredescribed. Some of these problems discussed in this talk are: storage and real-time retrieval of video images, audio, text by content, natural language interfacing between user and MMIS;compression and encryption of video images. More specifically, two significant storageproblems are the volume of video images (50 billion bytes for a single movie), and thelabeling/indexing process. For both of these two problems, several solutions (automated image understanding and neural nets) are presented. The real-time retrieval problem is also addressed (the inflexibility of SQL) and content based retrieval is described. Another hot issue is the image understanding and interpretation where several suggestions are proposed by using the L-G graph method. The speech processing issue is also described and solutions are recommended. Also, the natural language text problem is addressed and solutions based on intelligent interfaces are presented. Two more critical issues are proposed, the video image compression/encryption. These two later issues are important for security and privacy reasons, and for a low cost/high speed communication. Finally, a number of MMIS applications is also presented.

This paper focuses on how to retrieve personalized multimedia information based on user interest which can be mined from user profile. After analyzing the related works, a general structure of the personalized multimedia information retrieval system is given, which combines online module and offline module. Firstly, we collect a large-sale of photos from multimedia information sharing websites. Then, we record the information of the users who upload the multimedia information. For a given user, we save his history data which could describe the multimedia data. Secondly, the relationship between contents of multimedia data and semantic information is analyzed and then the user interest model is constructed by a modified LDA model which can integrate all the influencing factors in the task of multimedia information retrieval. Thirdly, the query distributions of all the topics can be estimated by the proposed modified LDA model. Thirdly, based on the above offline computing process, the online personalized multimedia information ranking algorithm is given which utilize the user interest model and the query word. Fourthly, multimedia information retrieval results are obtained using the proposed personalized multimedia information ranking algorithm. Finally, performance evaluation is conducted by a series of experiments to test the performance of the proposed algorithm compared with other methods on different datasets.

The virtual reality telecommunication system (VRTS) intends to remove today's human to network interface limitations. A new concept of multimedia communication is proposed to advance VRTS research. That is, any media that can be perceived by the five human senses are defined as multimedia. In particular, non-verbal messages in multimedia information are significant to enhance human emotional components in telecommunication. Based on the proposed VRTS interface definition, three implementation models are discussed for further development.

Multimedia information management, which implies all steps from creation and production to distribution and consumption, is a complex and challenging research area. To have a secure and trusted system we need to take into account aspects such as digital rights management (DRM), certification, control and security. As current solutions rely on proprietary architectures and tools, we propose an open architecture, as general as possible and not restricted to a specific standard, which provides trust and rights management in multimedia information systems. We analyse how the elements of the architecture provide trust to the whole value chain by managing multimedia content and digital rights represented using current standards, such as MPEG-21 and OMA DRM, and we compare it with an alternative approach. Then, we illustrate the system operation through a content composition use case, and finally, we present the software tools that we have already developed and the future work.
