Chapter 5 - Intrusion Prevention and Detection Systems
The problem of intrusion detection in the computer networks is not new and various methodologies have been formulated to address the same. A game-theoretic representation was also formulated, using one of the oldest game playing techniques, the minimax algorithm to solve this problem. It exploited the adversary like situation between the intruder and the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and the essence of this approach lies in the assumption that the intruder and the IDS have complete knowledge of the network and each other’s strategy. The solution for the intrusion detection problem via game theory gives the detection probability by which the IDS can detect the malicious packets on a given network when the probabilities with which the intruder sends the malicious packets on the various paths leading him to the target are known to the IDS. However, in the real world scenario, the role of the intruder and the IDS is dynamic, if the attack is detected or goes undetected the intruder tries to breach the network again with a different approach or the IDS tries to defend the network with a different strategy respectively. The next strategy for either of the two can be learnt by experience and thus, this paper, models an artificial neural network to represent this game-theoretic representation. The modeled neural network gives the detection probability of an attack by the IDS when the probabilities of sending malicious packets on the various paths leading the intruder to the target are given as an input pattern to the neural network.

Intrusion Detection Based on Active Networks
The network security is getting more important due to the wide-spread computer viruses and increasing network attacks. Nowadays, more and more security mechanisms, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems (IDS), are introduced to protect the network from malicious attacks. This paper proposes an agent and service based intrusion detection and response system for active network. In contrast to a traditional passive network, an active network gives the nodes programmable ability to exercise various active network technologies. The intrusion response, service deployment, and service update mechanisms are centered on this technology. The proposed model of intrusion detection and response system (IDRS) catches network attacks and responses to stop the attacks at the first time to reduce the damage. Detecting, reporting, and responding capabilities are all embedded and integrated in the proposed system. A prototype system is developed using a novel data mining technology (the support vector machine) to enhance the detection function. In addition, several experiments were conducted to verify the system and results showed that the system was able to effectively identify the intrusions and respond promptly. Experiments also showed that the support vector machine outperforms the competitive neural networks in identifying the intrusions.

This paper presents Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) and their classification emphasizing on the use of neural networks in IDS. Contemporary IDS usually include both signature verification and anomaly detection approaches realized by rule-based expert system and statistical module correspondingly. Neural networks may be used mainly as additional module to the statistical module to better recognize the user behavior. User behavior may be represented as frequency pattern of users command history. The paper presents an example of user profile vector for Unix-based platforms.

With the popularization and development of network knowledge, network intruders are increasing, and the attack mode has been updated. Intrusion detection technology is a kind of active defense technology, which can extract the key information from the network system, and quickly judge and protect the internal or external network intrusion. Intrusion detection is a kind of active security technology, which provides real-time protection for internal attacks, external attacks and misuse, and it plays an important role in ensuring network security. However, with the diversification of intrusion technology, the traditional intrusion detection system cannot meet the requirements of the current network security. Therefore, the implementation of intrusion detection needs diversifying. In this context, we apply neural network technology to the network intrusion detection system to solve the problem. In this paper, on the basis of intrusion detection method, we analyze the development history and the present situation of intrusion detection technology, and summarize the intrusion detection system overview and architecture. The neural network intrusion detection is divided into data acquisition, data analysis, pretreatment, intrusion behavior detection and testing.

Intrusion detection is an emerging area of research in the computer security and net-works with the growing usage of internet in everyday life. Most intrusion detection systems (IDSs) mostly use a single classifier algorithm to classify the network traffic data as normal behavior or anomalous. However, these single classifier systems fail to provide the best possible attack detection rate with low false alarm rate. In this paper,we propose to use a hybrid intelligent approach using a combination of classifiers in order to make the decision intelligently, so that the overall performance of the resul-tant model is enhanced. The general procedure in this is to follow the supervised or un-supervised data filtering with classifier or cluster first on the whole training dataset and then the output are applied to another classifier to classify the data. In this re- search, we applied Neural Network with Supervised and Unsupervised Learning in order to implement the intrusion detection system. Moreover, in this project, we used the method of Parallelization with real time application of the system processors to detect the systems intrusions.Using this method enhanced the speed of the intrusion detection. In order to train and test the neural network, NSLKDD database was used. Creating some different intrusion detection systems, each of which considered as a single agent, we precisely proceeded with the signature-based intrusion detection of the network. In the proposed design, the attacks have been classified into 4 groups and each group is detected by an Agent equipped with intrusion detection system (IDS).These agents act independently and report the intrusion or non-intrusion in the system; the results achieved by the agents will be studied in the Final Analyst and at last the analyst reports that whether there has been an intrusion in the system or not. Malware authors are continuously developing crime toolkits. This has led to the situation of zero-day attacks, where malware harm computer systems despite the protection from existing Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). We propose an Intelligent Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IIDPS) approach that combines the Signature based Intrusion Detection system (SIDS), Anomaly based Intrusion Detection System (AIDS) and Response Intrusion Detection System (RIDS). We used a risk assessment approach to determine an appropriate response action against each attack event. We also demonstrated the IIDPS make the detection and prevention of malware more effective.

The novelty and growing sophistication of cyber threats mean that high accuracy and interpretable machine learning models are needed more than ever before for Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems. This study aims to solve this challenge by applying Explainable AI techniques, including Shapley Additive explanations feature selection, to improve model performance, robustness, and transparency. The method systematically employs different classifiers and proposes a new hybrid method called Hybrid Bagging-Boosting and Boosting on Residuals. Then, performance is taken in four steps: the multistep evaluation of hybrid ensemble learning methods for binary classification and fine-tuning of performance; feature selection using Shapley Additive explanations values retraining the hybrid model for better performance and reducing overfitting; the generalization of the proposed model for multiclass classification; and the evaluation using standard information metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Key results indicate that the proposed methods outperform state-of-the-art algorithms, achieving a peak accuracy of 98.47% and an F1 score of 96.19%. These improvements stem from advanced feature selection and resampling techniques, enhancing model accuracy and balancing precision and recall. Integrating Shapley Additive explanations-based feature selection with hybrid ensemble methods significantly boosts the predictive and explanatory power of Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems, addressing common pitfalls in traditional cybersecurity models. This study paves the way for further research on statistical innovations to enhance Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems performance.

Over the past few years, Internet applications have become more advanced and widely used. This has increased the need for Internet networks to be secured. Intrusion detection systems (IDSs), which employ artificial intelligence (AI) methods, are vital to ensuring network security. As a branch of AI, deep learning (DL) algorithms are now effectively applied in IDSs. Among deep learning neural networks, the convolutional neural network (CNN) is a well-known structure designed to process complex data. The CNN overcomes the typical limitations of conventional machine learning approaches and is mainly used in IDSs. Several CNN-based approaches are employed in IDSs to handle privacy issues and security threats. However, there are no comprehensive surveys of IDS schemes that have utilized CNN to the best of our knowledge. Hence, in this study, our primary focus is on CNN-based IDSs so as to increase our understanding of various uses of the CNN in detecting network intrusions, anomalies, and other types of attacks. This paper innovatively organizes the studied CNN-IDS approaches into multiple categories and describes their primary capabilities and contributions. The main features of these approaches, such as the dataset, architecture, input shape, evaluated metrics, performance, feature extraction, and classifier method, are compared. Because different datasets are used in CNN-IDS research, their experimental results are not comparable. Hence, this study also conducted an empirical experiment to compare different approaches based on standard datasets, and the comparative results are presented in detail.

Cybersecurity has become major progress in the digital era. Contraction is an important component of the cyber analysts’ management of information technology, as several government organizations and commercial enterprises are moving to dispersed systems. A cyber security analyst is most importantly responsible for protecting the network against damage. Attacks on networks are becoming more complex and sophisticated every day. The number of connected workplaces leads to heavy traffic, more security attack vectors, security breaches and raises more issues than the cyber area can handle by using human intervention while there is not enough sizable automation. Network Intrusion, thus, becomes the biggest concern of this generation. Attacks on networks are currently the most pressing issue confronting modern society. Network risks affect all networks, from small to large. An intrusion detection system must be present for detecting and mitigating hostile attacks inside networks. Machine Learning and Deep Learning are currently used in several sectors, particularly the security of information, to design efficient intrusion detection systems. These systems can quickly and accurately identify threats. However, because malicious threats emerge and evolve regularly, networks need an advanced security solution. Hence, building an intrusion detection system that is both effective and intelligent is one of the most cognizant research issues. There are several public datasets available for research on intrusion detection. Because of the complexity of attacks and the continually evolving detection of an attack method, publicly available intrusion databases must be updated frequently. A convolutional recurrent neural network is employed in this study to construct a deep-learning-based hybrid intrusion detection system that detects attacks over a network. To boost the efficiency of the intrusion detection system and predictability, the convolutional neural network performs the convolution to collect local features, while a deep-layered recurrent neural network extracts the features in the proposed Hybrid Deep-Learning-Based Network Intrusion Detection System (HDLNIDS). Experiments are conducted using publicly accessible benchmark CICIDS-2018 data, to determine the effectiveness of the proposed system. The findings of the research demonstrate that the proposed HDLNIDS outperforms current intrusion detection approaches with an average accuracy of 98.90% in detecting malicious attacks.

In the context of a computer system, computer security is the prevention of an illicit action against the system. For this purpose, computer security must determine the difference between normal and harmful activities. These activities can come from outside or from inside the system to be protected. In a similar manner, the role of the Human Immune System (HIS) is to detect and defend against harm. This similarity has inspired approaches in the area of computer security, including the use of immune-based approaches to build Intrusion Detection and Response Systems (IDRSs). As a concrete example, this chapter introduces a new approach for Intrusion Detection (ID) and Intrusion Response (IR) to build a completely distributed and decentralised IDRS for use in computer networks. This approach is called Intrusion Detection and Response extended with Agent Mobility, or IDReAM for short. IDReAM combines Mobile Agents (MAs) with two self-organising paradigms inspired by natural life systems. The Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is inspired by the metaphor of the immune system that protects the human body from external threats. Specialised cells of the immune system, called the T cells, travel around the body to detect possible threats by eliminating the proteins that they do not recognise as safe proteins—referred to as non-self proteins. Intrusion Detection Agents (IDAs) roam the network to detect suspicious behaviours in a manner that mimics the behaviour of T cells. The Intrusion Response System (IRS) also borrows mechanisms from the stigmergic paradigm of a colony of ants. At the time of foraging, the ants use the environment to diffuse a chemical substance called the pheromone which traces the route for the other ants from the nest to the source of food. Intrusion Response Agents (IRAs) roam the network to respond to the IDAs’ alerts, mimicking the behaviour of the ants to trace the route to the alert and give the response. The two natural systems exhibit a social behaviour by the organisation of their entities, T cells and ants, which is not possible without the functionality of mobility.KeywordsIntrusion DetectionAgent MobilityIntrusion Detection SystemComputer SecurityHuman Immune SystemThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. The research relevance is determined by the growing threats in cybersecurity, which require improved methods of detecting vulnerabilities in software, with the help of the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of AI for vulnerability testing as an alternative to traditional security testing methods, particularly pentesting. To achieve this goal, machine learning algorithms were analysed, a hybrid model for vulnerability detection was developed, and the use of intrusion detection and prevention systems, automated approaches to software testing, and application interface security was addressed. The study determined that decision trees quickly classify traffic but overlearn; support vector machines accurately analyse logs but are sensitive to settings; naive Bayesian classifiers effectively filter messages but are limited by assumptions; neural networks and deep learning detect complex threats but require a lot of data; the k-nearest neighbours’ algorithm is suitable for small systems but slow; and random forests are accurate in code analysis but less interpretable. AI is fast and scalable but limited in understanding context and responding to new threats. The results showed that pentesting prevailed in detecting complex vulnerabilities, and the hybrid machine learning model achieved 93% accuracy and 100% prediction accuracy but missed 17% of vulnerabilities. For their part, cybersecurity technologies such as application interface testing, bug bounty programmes, security integration into development, intrusion detection systems, end-to-end encryption, IoT security and phishing are also effective, but need to be adapted to new threats. The results of the study can be used by cybersecurity companies, software developers, and security engineers to improve vulnerability testing and cyber threat protection processes, including with the help of AI-based tools
