A novel user interface design for 3D model retrieval

An optical brain-machine interface (O-BMI) system using calcium imaging has various advantages such as high resolution, a comprehensive view of large neural populations, abilities such as long-term stable recording, and applicability to freely behaving animals in neuroscience research. The present study developed an ergonomic user interface (UI) design, based on a use scenario for an O-BMI system that can be used for the acquisition and processing of calcium imaging in freely behaving rodents. The UI design was developed in three steps: (1) identification of design and function requirements of users, (2) establishment of a use scenario, and (3) development of a UI prototype. The UI design requirements were identified by a literature review, a benchmark of existing systems, and a focus group interview with five neuroscience researchers. Then, the use scenario was developed for tasks of data acquisition, feature extraction, and neural decoding for offline and online processing by considering the sequences of operations and needs of users. Lastly, a digital prototype incorporating an information architecture, graphic user interfaces, and simulated functions was fabricated. A usability test was conducted with five neuroscientists (work experience = 3.4 ± 1.1 years) and five ergonomic experts (work experience = 3.6 ± 2.7 years) to compare the digital prototypes with four existing systems (Miniscope, nVista, Mosaic, and Suite2p). The usability testing results showed that the ergonomic UI design was significantly preferred to the UI designs of the existing systems by reducing the task completion time by 10.1% to 70.2% on average, the scan path length by 14.4% to 88.7%, and perceived workload by 12.2% to 37.9%, increasing satisfaction by 11.3% to 74.3% in data acquisition and signal-extraction tasks. The present study demonstrates the significance of the user-centered design approach in the development of a system for neuroscience research. Further research is needed to validate the usability test results of the UI prototype as a corresponding real system is implemented.

Social Media platforms are increasing user engagements with their attractive User Interfaces (UI) design playing a crucial role in maintaining user involvement. Use of Emotional Intelligence (EI) into the UI transforming user interaction and engagement pattern significantly. With an emphasis on how design decisions affect user behaviour, this study explores the nuanced function of EIUIs (Emotionally Inteligence User Interfaces) in the context of social media. It specifically draws attention to the dangers of manipulative techniques like "dark patterns"-purposeful interface strategies intended to influence users to take actions they might not have otherwise taken-as well as the possibility of constructive involvement. By investigating these practices, the paper hopes to clarify the wider ethical consequences of interface design as well as the duty of platforms and designers to promote transparency, autonomy, and confidence in digital interactions. This paper aims to contribute to the discourse on user interface design by providing a comprehensive understanding of EIUIs' potential and pitfalls in the context of social media interactions. Additionally, this study focusses on finding information of the pattern of Emotionally Intelligent User Interfaces (EIUI) design to enhance user engagements emotionally and tend to take decisions and the impact of the design pattern in user experience.

Design Patterns (DPs) are acknowledged as powerful conceptual tools to improve design quality and to reduce time and cost of the development process by effect of the reuse of "good" design solutions. In many fields (e.g., software engineering, web engineering, interface design) patterns are widely used by practitioners and are also investigated from a research perspective. Still, they have been seldom explored in the arena of Recommender Systems (RSs). RSs provide suggestions ("recommendations") for items that are likely to be appropriate for the user profile, and are increasingly adopted in content-intensive multimedia applications to complement traditional forms of search in large information spaces. This paper explores RSs through the lens of User Interface (UI) Design Patterns. We have performed a systematic analysis of 54 recommendation-empowered content-intensive multimedia applications, in order to: (i) discover the occurrences of existing domain independent UI patterns; (ii) identify frequently adopted UI solutions that are not modelled by existing patterns, and define a set of new UI patterns, some of which are specific of the interfaces for recommendation features while others can be useful also in a broader context. The results of our inspection have been discussed with and evaluated by a team of experts, leading to a consolidated set of 14 new patterns that are reported in the paper. Reusing pattern-based design solutions instead of building new solutions from scratch enables novice and expert designers to build good UIs for Recommendation-empowered content intensive multimedia applications more effectively, and ultimately can improve the UX experience in this class of systems. From a broader perspective, our work can stimulate future research bridging Recommender Systems, Web Engineering and Interface Design by means of Design Patterns, and highlights new research directions also discussed in the paper.

An alternative solution for Indosport, considering the increasingly advanced smartphone development and also followed by the rapid growth of its users in Indonesia. The purpose of this study project is to produce a product in the form of a user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design in helping to realize targeted mobile applications and not forgetting to apply the principles of visual communication design namely unity and variety, hierarchy, contrast, proportion and balance. The UI and UX design methods go through several stages of work in sequence: pre-production process, production process, and post-production. This design results in UI and UX designs that are equipped with user flow, interface designs, illustrations and prototypes. The main page of the Indosport mobile application is News, Activity, Calendar, and Profile which later on these pages there are several features that are different from the previous page. The making of this UI uses several visual languages such as medium close up, full shot, long shot, close up and medium long shot in the image section contained in the article as well as the depiction of field styles used to almost all visual UI elements. Using several principles in design, namely time to learn, speed of performance, rate of errors by users, retention over time, and subjective satisfaction. The resulting design forms will be distributed directly to the Research and Development division and the IT division from Indosport to be made a native.

The rapid acceleration and advancement of information technology have significantly impacted the education sector, including higher education institutions. However, the implementation of existing systems has also introduced new challenges that are not yet addressed within the digitalization of information systems. One such issue is the absence of a dedicated platform for Student Online Complaint Services. This includes the lack of digital records as evidence and archives of complaints and issues raised by students, and the establishment of task forces such as the PPKS (Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence). Despite these efforts, there is no digital-based platform to facilitate online complaints. The objective of this research is to develop a requirement model and user interface design to support the design of a web-based system that serves as a platform for students to easily report issues encountered during their studies. It also aims to assist campus stakeholders in capturing all student complaints as documentation for internal evaluation. The methodology used includes Agile Development Requirements Engineering with the Scrum model and the User-Centered Design (UCD) method to address the identified issues and research objectives. The research outcomes include the development stages of the website, system requirements, requirement model processes, requirement specification, and user interface design. furthermore, the research tested the user interface design on a website prototype, achieving a score of 87.5, classified as Excellent under the Adjective Rating system.

We describe a method of assessing the implications for human error on user interface design of safety-critical systems. In previous work we have proposed a taxonomy of influencing factors that contribute to error. In this article, components of the taxonomy are combined into a mathematical and causal model for error, represented as a Bayesian Belief Net (BBN). The BBN quantifies error influences arising from user knowledge, ability, and the task environ-ment, combined with factors describing the complexity of user action and user interface quality. The BBN model predicts probabilities of different types of errorslips and mistakes for each component action of a task involving user-system interaction. We propose an Impact Analysis Method that involves running test scenarios against this causal model of error in order to determine user interactions that are prone to different types of error. Applying the proposed method will enable the designer to determine the combinations of influencing factors and their interactions that are most likely to influence human error. Finally we show how such scenario-based causal analysis can be useful as a means of focusing on relevant guidelines for safe user interface design. The proposed method is demonstrated through a case study of an operator performing a task using the control system for a laser spectrophotometer. We describe a method of assessing the implications for human error on user interface design of safety-critical systems. Mobile user interface (UI) design plays a very important role in determining an application that can be adopted by all types of users, especially those residing in rural areas. This review aims to provide a mapping of previously published studies on mobile UI design application for smallholder agriculture to be a smart farmer. The focus of this scoping review is on the design elements of the proposed UI, strategies of inquiry used and to find out if there is a UI design that involves geospatial context by published articles. The results show that interview and observation are the most common field study methods used to obtain information in designing mobile UI, and the most widely applied UI elements are audio and Interactive Voice Response (IVR). There are many user interface elements that can be used by farmers who have different skills level in dealing with mobile technology. Icon interface is an important element in designing mobile UI for rural farmers based on previous results. Other than that, the use of location function in mobile UI design shows an upward trend where three recent articles used location function to report crop pest and disease and determine the nearest market location. In addition, there is a need to design geospatial elements such as map for mobile UI that match the skills of rural farmers to support the fourth Industrial Revolution in agriculture to be a smart farmer.

In the rapidly developing world of information technology, computers have been used in various settings for clinical medicine application. Studies have focused on computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system interface design and functional development to achieve a successful technology adoption process. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate physician satisfaction with the CPOE system. This survey included user attitude toward interface design, operation functions/usage effectiveness, interface usability, and user satisfaction. We used questionnaires for data collection from June to August 2008, and 225 valid questionnaires were returned with a response rate of 84.5%. Canonical correlation was applied to explore the relationship of personal attributes and usability with user satisfaction. The results of the data analysis revealed that certain demographic groups showed higher acceptance and satisfaction levels, especially residents, those with less pressure when using computers or those with less experience with the CPOE systems. Additionally, computer use pressure and usability were the best predictors of user satisfaction. Based on the study results, it is suggested that future CPOE development should focus on interface design and content links, as well as providing educational training programs for the new users; since a learning curve period should be considered as an indespensible factor for CPOE adoption.

In 2023, digital literacy has increased to be discussed which navigates human interaction with the current digital environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between digital literacy and user interface (UI) design quality using a usability testing approach. The study involved collecting data through a series of trials with participants representing different levels of digital literacy. The main focus of this study was to assess the extent to which the UI design could improve the digital literacy understanding of the users, namely school children. The parameters evaluated involved aspects of digital literacy, such as the ability to understand and evaluate digital information, as well as usability elements such as interface clarity, navigation efficiency, and user engagement level. The approach used is the design thinking method which focuses on the end result only. Usability testing is an important evaluation method in measuring the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of a user interface (UI). This research focuses on the use of usability testing to assess the quality of UI design in the context of understanding digital literacy. The results of this study can provide insight into how the level of digital literacy can affect the user experience in using digital applications and contribute to the development of UIs that are more user-friendly and accessible to various levels of society.

User interfaces are important for streamlining the interactions between humans and computers. However, there are few effective approaches for collecting users’ preferences implicitly and objectively for the purpose of user interface (UI) design optimization. This paper presents an effective approach to interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) optimization-based UI design via eye tracking, including eye-movement data based users’ preference inferring, gene coding for real UI components and design features, and the visualization and interaction mechanisms. Then we design and build a prototype system that applies IGA to generate and optimize music player UI solutions automatically. An evaluation of our prototype system suggests that it can generate and identify personalized UI designs reliably with minimal user intervention and high efficiency and user satisfaction.

Strategic management of cognitive load enhances user interface (UI) design in a two-fold manner, particularly in information services that require frequent use of sophisticated data. This paper addresses cognitive overload and elevated user experience by decomposing UI elements and information flow. The primary concern is having users cope with vital information within a reasonable timeframe, which is critical to productivity and overall satisfaction. We explore cognitive load theory, specifically its application in UI design regarding intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. Through case studies and usability testing, we focus on visual hierarchies, navigation, and overall design consistency that advance feedback and content chunking to show the extreme reduction in mental effort. Also, cognitive load solutions that alter content and interaction based on user activity are advanced as novel adaptive interfaces. The paper frames real-world scenarios to illustrate assessing cognitive load in information service systems to aid UI decision-makers and developers. Emphasis on enabling real-time interface navigation supports optimal information retention and swift decision making. A systems approach focused on users' cognitive capabilities enables a UI design which ultimately makes information services more effective, efficient, and user-friendly.

Electronic Government (e-Government) systems are intended primarily to deliver governmental information and services through the web. The rapid evolution of mobile technology has triggered the need for conventional web-based e-Government systems to move towards another era known as Mobile Government (m-Government) systems. Although the functionality remains the same, the use of mobile devices in m-Government systems has caused the interface design of such systems to be dissimilar from the conventional web-based e-Government systems. Mobile devices in some ways have limited capacity in terms retrieving and displaying information, which makes their interface design to be quite tricky. This study aims to review the existing interface design frameworks in order to identify and collate the essential design elements that should be considered in designing the interface for m-Government systems. The study analysed qualitatively four m-Government interface design frameworks, namely 7Cs Design Elements, A Functional Design Approach for Mobile Government Website, Adaptive Mobile Government Framework and Framework of information Quality of Mobile Interface e-Government. By using content analysis, the study identified eight design elements from such frameworks. The study also highlighted the limitations of the current frameworks that could be explored further by future studies in interface design for m-Government systems.

In today’s automotive industry there is an increasing demand for VR technology, because it provides the possibility to switch from cost and time intensiv physical mock up’s (PMU) to digital mock up’s (DMU). Furthermore the visualization and examination of simulation results is a very important aspect during the whole development cycle. Therefore tools are needed, which enable the users to work with DMU’s, as well as simulation data sets in an efficient and intuitive way. In this paper we present the design of a VR user interface for evaluating simulation data sets. The design of the user interface is based on the basic interaction tasks (BIT’s), introduced by Foley et. al..
