Evaluation of Definite Integrals I: The Residue Theorem and Friends
- Jan 01, 2023
- Ron Gordon
Many students cite using the residue theorem to evaluate real definite integrals and sums as the main factor in their interest in Complex Analysis. This chapter will review the residue theorem of course. But the residue theorem is only useful in the presence of poles and no branch points. To attack very difficult integrals, we will need to consider integrands with poles and branch points, and occasionally the poles may be essential. Accordingly, we seek a more methodical treatment of applying complex integration to evaluation of real definite integrals and sums. Such a treatment is presented here. We will then present several examples. Ultimately, we will demonstrate a unified approach to using complex integrals to evaluate real definite integrals and sums, regardless of the type of singularities occurring in the complex integrand.
