A UML Profile for Agent-Based Development

The Unified Software Development Process (USDP) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) have been now generally accepted as the standard methodology and modeling language for developing object-oriented systems. Although agent-based systems introduce new issues, we consider that USDP and UML can be used in an extended manner for modeling agent-based systems. We present a methodology for designing agent-based systems and the specific models expressed in the UML-based notation corresponding to each phase of the software development process. UML was extended using the provided mechanism: stereotypes. Therefore, this approach can be managed with any CASE tool supporting UML. A case study, the development of a specific agent-based student assessment system (SAS), is presented.

Debugging on computer program is a complex cognitive activity. Although it is complex, it’s still one of the popular issues in computer programming task. It is a difficult task, which is to understand what the error is and how to solve such error? In computer programming the difficulty is to understand the Object-Oriented programming concept together with the programming logic. If the programming logic is incorrect, the program codes will have such error named as logic error and can caused highly maintenance cost. Logic error is a bug in a program that causes it to operate incorrectly, without terminating or crashing the program. It will produce unintended output or other behavior than what we are expecting. Method that use to develop a propose model Object Oriented Debugger is Unified Modeling Language (UML). It is the best choice model and suitable to design the Object Oriented Debugger which will be developed in an object oriented programming environment. The model will provide an ability to capture the characteristics of a system by using notations in the process of designing and implementing the system. The model of Object Oriented Debugger has been successfully implemented. This model has been developed using Unified Approach methodology, which consists of two methods such as Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA) and Object-Oriented Design (OOD). The model developed is to capture the structure and behavior of the Object Oriented Debugger by using the UML diagram. The model also can ease the readability of the documentation for the maintenance purposes. The design of the Object Oriented Debugger Model has been developed using the UML notation. It’s consisting of two parts that are object-oriented analysis and object-oriented design. All the developing and designing are based on the model in UML.

Unified Modeling Language (UML) plays an important role in the modern software development process by offering standardized methods for visual modeling, analysis, and design of complex systems. This paper discusses the main aspects of storing, editing, and integrating UML documents with integrated development environments (IDEs). The main focus is on comparing the two main formats for storing UML models – XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). XMI, being an official standard developed by Object Management Group, provides a high degree of detail and compatibility with various UML tools, making it preferable for large and complex projects that require support for the full UML specification. At the same time, JSON is simple and flexible, which makes it suitable for projects where speed of development and ease of integration are important, although it is inferior to XMI in describing complex aspects of UML models. The paper analyzes in detail the methods of editing UML documents, including manual editing and automated approaches, using APIs and scripts. Manual editing is useful when you need to make small changes to the structure of a UML document, but it can be time-consuming and error-prone when working with large projects. Automation, on the other hand, provides effective tools for mass editing and generating UML elements, which significantly speeds up development and minimizes the likelihood of errors, especially since modern tools such as StarUML offer the necessary tools for programmatically modifying UML documents by integrating them into development processes. Combining of UML documents with integrated development environments also plays a key role in increasing development efficiency, as this allows automating code generation based on UML models, maintaining synchronization between code and diagrams, and facilitating visualization and documentation of architectural solutions. Despite the significant advantages, there are challenges associated with limited support for all UML features and potential conflicts between models and code. This only emphasizes the need for further research in this area. Prospects for further research include the development of new methods and tools for working with UML documents, improving their integration with development environments, and using artificial intelligence to automate the analysis and design of UML models. Attention should also be paid to the using of UML with continuous integration processes, which can significantly increase the flexibility and adaptability of software development. Thus, the study of the structure of storing, editing, and integrating UML documents is an important area for optimizing the design and development of modern software systems.

In this chapter, we provide the essential theory and practical details of employing the principles of Object Orientation (OO) in system architecture modeling. We do not attempt to provide an exhaustive OO tutorial, since there exists a very large literature on this subject (see the references to this chapter). Our goal, instead, is to give the reader the level of understanding needed to master the MBSAP methodology and apply it to practical system architecting challenges. First, we present the rationale for OO and define the essential concepts and terminology, stressing the benefits it delivers in dealing with complex entities. Although we use the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) as the basis for this book, we begin by discussing and illustrating the primary diagrams of the Unified Modeling Language (UML), which is the root language standard for OO. This is then followed by a description of the changes to UML introduced by the SysML, which is defined as a Profile of UML. The reality is that a large part of the SysML is taken directly from the UML language specification. We believe understanding of this material is enhanced by first considering the parent UML and then explicitly showing how UML modifies and extends the language. We include generic UML and SysML diagrams that illustrate important principles and syntax and that can serve as format samples in developing real architecture models. Appendices A and B are concise references to UML and SysML, respectively, intended to give readers a quick and easy way to look up the details. Chapter objective: the reader will be able to create and read UML and SysML diagrams and to describe the role of each.

The development of information and communication technology in the twenty-first century has made it possible for information to quickly cross the boundaries of globalization. However, humanitarian foundation that work in the areas of education, treatment, job training, workplaces, and nursing homes for individuals with disabilities still do not employ information system technology extensively. The data collection system is still inefficient, resulting documents are easily damaged or lost. This study uses data collection methods with questionnaires and interviews with the number of samples determined using the Cochran formula. System Development Life Cycle Methodology was used to develop the application. The system is designed based on Object-oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) methods with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) notation. The conclusion from the simple linear regression hypothesis test is that there is an influence between Human Resource Management on Employee Performance. By designing an adequate Personnel Management Information System to support human resource management, it can improve employee performance.

Object-Oriented (OO) is definitely having an impact upon systems analysis, systems design, programming (chapter 8), and most recently database systems (chapter 10). The main aim of this chapter is to portray how conceptual modelling as applied to database systems can move relatively painlessly into the domain of OO (Beynon-Davies, 1992). We will discuss how OO analysis, an approach primarily directed at the building of applications in procedural or object-oriented languages, is equally relevant to the development of database systems.

To most in the software community, "modeling" is drawing pictures, something much different than "coding". While programming languages must be specified precisely enough to be executable, this has not necessarily been the case for modeling languages. Indeed, the well-known Unified Modeling Language (UML) has for years had a specification that is far from precise. However, precise models are quite common in other engineering disciplines, and there has been a minority even in software engineering that have created models that are precise enough to be, themselves, executable. Over the last decade, the UML community has more generally come to realize the benefits of having at least a subset of UML specified with precise execution semantics. While not all models need to be executable, executable models can support early testing and analysis of the design of critical software systems, as well as supporting simulation for communities using UML for modeling beyond just software (such as SysML for systems engineering). As a result, there has been a great deal of work in recent years toward the standardization of precise, executable semantics for UML models - the "meaning" behind the pictures: Foundational UML (fUML), the Action Language for fUML (Alf) and the recently completed Precise Semantics for UML Composite Structures. These new specifications provide the promise of widespread support for executable modeling across the many UML tools now on the market.

In this paper we present the original method of intensive hands-on training in Object-oriented Analysis and Design (OOA/OOD) with the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The method has been successfully used by the authors for three years. During the training, the students: go through the communication problems that are typical for large software development projects obtain the successful experience of applying UML to overcome these problems. The essence of the method is that a team of students is supposed to design a software system. They have several hours to complete the task. During this timeframe verbal and written communication is forbidden, and the UML is the only allowed language. This training is a kind of experiment for students -- they are to discover whether UML is "a real language" that is suitable and beneficial for a project team.The training was successfully delivered more than ten times in both academic and corporate environments and generated positive feedback from students and customers.

This article proposes a prototype development of ET (Embedded technology) rescue robot that follows an object-oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) by using a UML (Unified modeling language) as a tool in the process. The idea is to improve the robot application development process to be efficient, rapid, and conformable with the standard by using the UML. The ET rescue robot prototype comprises of the two systems; a robot control system and a victim discovering system. The robot operation control is performed by a computer that interconnects the robot via a Bluetooth network. The operator monitors the robot operation by using video, sound, and temperature data that are captured through a camera, sound sensor, and temperature sensor installed on the robot to discover the victim, respectively. The robot was tested and experimented under the environment imitated the victim discovery in disastrous scenario. The result reflected that the prototype of ET rescue robot can be developed in the application level by following the OOADM as specified in the requirements.

Recently, a formal development process of robot in an application level has not been sufficiently encouraged and promoted. This leads an insufficient procedure to improve the robot development process in the application level. This article introduces an object-oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) that is applicable to the robot development process, i.e., a field sensing robot, in the application level. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is used as a tool for analysis and design of the field sensing robot. The Mindstorms Lego model RCX is deployed as the main robot hardware and the C++ programming language is employed as the software tool for implementing the field sensing robot application. The tasks of robot are defined to move across the fields, to avoid the obstacles, and to reach the end point, according to the requirement. The robot employs the light sensor to detect the field surfaces in order to specify different types of movement, i.e., moving on a normal surface, increasing and reducing speed across a slop surface, and moving within a boundary. In addition, the robot uses the touch sensors to detect the obstacles during its movement toward the end point and to dodge the obstacles when hitting them. The robot operation is completed when the end point is detected. By following the formal standard development process using the UML model, the application of robot can be implemented rapidly and efficiently.

Separation of concerns is a basic engineering principle that is also at the core of object-oriented analysis and design methods in the context of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The UML gives the designer a rich, but somehow disorganized, set of views on her model as well as many features, such as design pattern occurrences, stereotypes or tag values, allowing her to add non-functional information to a model. Aspect-oriented concepts are applied to manage the multitude of design constraints. However, it can then be an overwhelming task to reconcile the various aspects of a model into a working implementation. In this paper, we present our UMLAUT framework as a toolkit for easily building application specific "weavers" for generating detailed design models from high level, aspect oriented UML models. This is illustrated with a toy example of a distributed multimedia application with a weaving generating an implementation model. More ambitious applications are briefly outlined in the conclusion.

The need for reengineering of software systems has dramatically increased as legacy systems are migrated to new platforms and rewritten in modern object-oriented languages. Although the de facto standard for describing object-oriented systems is the Unified Modeling Language (UML), many legacy systems have been documented using non-object-oriented structured analysis and design methods. Problems arise in the migration because non-object-oriented documentation is inherently not conducive to the development of object-oriented systems. This chapter presents a set of rules to automate the conversion of systems which were originally modeled using structured techniques to UML. The newly created UML documentation can then be used in developing an object-oriented equivalent system. The UML model may also be used by computer aided software engineering tools to implement a new system. The reengineering rules are tested on an example structured system to demonstrate their viability.

Since its adoption in 1997, the unified modeling language (UML) has proved very popular with software engineers and has become the de facto standard as a visual modeling language for software engineers. However, this software focus of UML has discouraged many systems engineers from adopting it in earnest. Those who did adopt UML developed strategies to cope with its shortcomings. A common approach was to model additional systems engineering concepts in other modeling tools. This made it difficult to integrate the different viewpoints and achieve traceability. Fortunately, with the release of UML 2.0 and the ensuing extensions to it in SysML - the soon-to-be adopted systems modeling language - the systems engineering community has a real alternative to systems modeling that provides a more integrated approach to systems and software engineering. Since its inception in 1997, ARTiSAN has endeavored to bridge the gap between systems and software engineering modeling by adding systems engineering extensions to the UML and, as a key member of the SysML initiative, is well poised to support these emerging standards for systems and software modeling. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the major extensions proposed by SysML, and will summarize how ARTiSAN's latest release of its flagship product Studio (version 6.0) takes the lead in supporting these concepts.
