Affects and Emotions in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine [From the Editor

First, I would like to share some good news and a new honor with all of you, our IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) readers. Based on the recent Thomson-Reuters Journal Citation Report (JCR) released in late June 2011, for the second year in a row, SPM has ranked number one among all 247 publications within the electrical and electronics engineering category worldwide and first among all 127 IEEE publications.

Serving as the editor-in-chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) is a privilege and a blessing. Three years ago, when I first assumed the responsibility, I expected a journey similar to prior ones with other publications. Now at the end of this one, I am immensely gratified by what we, the editorial team, have accomplished and what I, together with authors, readers, guest editors, and the entire editorial team, have learned.

It will be March when you receive this issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM), and it has been almost four years since the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS)'s Inside Signal Processing eNewsletter (eNews) was first launched in April 2007, as the latest addition to SPM. When spring begins, flowers blossom and a new start brings new hopes. As the old Chinese saying goes, “A year's plan starts with spring.” This is precisely what we are doing for the bimonthly SPM and the monthly eNews that complements the magazine.

25 years of molecular mechanisms

This issue is one of a pair of coordinated special issues on digital forensics by IEEE Security & Privacy and IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. S&P's special issue has articles debating the effectiveness of forensics, on capturing live forensics analysis of computers, on the new Microsoft Office file formats and their implications on forensics, on licensing issues for digital forensics investigators, and finally a review article on the use of hashing in forensics.

This contribution deals with a GPR prospecting performed in the archaeological site of Le Cesine, Lecce, Southern Italy [1]. The measurement campaign was performed in the framework of a short-term scientific mission (STSM) funded by the European Cost Action 17131 (acronym SAGA), and aimed to map the subsoil of three wide areas in order to address and rationalize future archaeological excavations. As an innovative aspect, beyond a traditional data processing [2], each one of the collected B-scans was processed by means of an innovative data processing, which is based on an inverse scattering algorithm [3-4] accompanied by a shifting zoom procedure [5]. This latter makes possible a computationally effective microwave imaging of electrically large spatial domains and imitates, in a suitable way, the truncation applied on the migration integral, theoretically extended on an infinite observation line but practically necessarily limited to a finite line. For each investigated area, the B-scans, as elaborated by means of the innovative data processing procedure, were combined in order to obtain a depth slice visualization of the investigated areas. As it will be shown at the conference, the obtained images revealed the presence of buried ruins, maybe ascribable to structures related to an ancient Roman harbour. These results motivated founding request for archaeological excavations, which hopefully will be possible to execute in the next few years, and will confirm or correct the hypotheses suggested by the GPR survey as enhanced by the innovative data processing.

Acknowledgements

This study was supported by a STSM Grant from COST Action SAGA: The Soil Science & Archaeo-Geophysics Alliance - CA17131 (www.saga-cost.eu), supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology www.cost.eu).

References

[1] E. We focus on the emerging, nonsecurity-oriented applications of digital watermarking and data hiding in general. Then we consider a more technical topic, i.e., we compare, at a very general level, the two most important approaches to the watermarking problem proposed so far, namely, spread spectrum (SS) and quantization index modulation (QIM) random-binning-like watermarking. A rebuttal to the article by C. Herley, Why watermarking is nonsense (IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, vol. 19, no. 5, pp. 10-11, Sept. 2002), is also presented with the intention of starting a discussion open to all the readers, on the controversial points raised by that article.
