Democratizing Signal Processing [From the Editors

The IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) is a scientific conference dedicated to mathematical, algorithmic, and computational aspects of biological and biomedical imaging, across all scales of observation. It fosters knowledge transfer among different imaging communities and contributes to an integrative approach to biomedical imaging. ISBI is a joint initiative from the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS). The 2018 meeting will include tutorials, and a scientific program composed of plenary talks, invited special sessions, challenges, as well as oral and poster presentations of peer-reviewed papers. High-quality papers are requested containing original contributions to the topics of interest including image formation and reconstruction, computational and statistical image processing and analysis, dynamic imaging, visualization, image quality assessment, and physical, biological, and statistical modeling. Accepted 4-page regular papers will be published in the symposium proceedings published by IEEE and included in IEEE Xplore. To encourage attendance by a broader audience of imaging scientists and offer additional presentation opportunities, ISBI 2018 will continue to have a second track featuring posters selected from 1-page abstract submissions without subsequent archival publication.

Presents a list of articles published by the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) that ranked among the top 100 most downloaded IEEE Xplore articles.

The annual IEEE 5-Minute Video Clip Contest (5-MICC) was launched by the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), and the selected topic for the competition at IEEE ICIP 2020 was “Fight the Pandemic.” The organizing committee selected three finalist videos and placed them online for public voting. The first one is about a visual analytic system for pandemic management, the second concerns machine learning screening of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients based on X-ray images, and the third deals with a COVID-19 test strip reader. Taking the public voting results from more than 800 participants into consideration, the panel of judges decided the final rankings of the three videos. In this article, we present an overview of the 5-MICC at ICIP 2020, describing the competition setup, the teams, and their approaches. We also share our experience and the feedback we received from the finalists.

First, I would like to share some good news and a new honor with all of you, our IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) readers. Based on the recent Thomson-Reuters Journal Citation Report (JCR) released in late June 2011, for the second year in a row, SPM has ranked number one among all 247 publications within the electrical and electronics engineering category worldwide and first among all 127 IEEE publications.

Each year in spring, the IEEE Signal Processing Society, at the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP), presents its annual awards. Several of these awards are related to Best Papers, and although this is not a rule, several of these papers have appeared in IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SIGNAL PROCESSING. In this editorial, we are pleased to announce the articles receiving 2005 awards. For the 2006 awards, readers are encouraged to nominate candidate papers before September 1, 2006 to the Editor-in-Chief. Nominations will be judged by the relevant Society Technical Committees before being forwarded to the Awards Board.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is introducing a new feature that originated from a suggestion made by my colleague Athina Petropulu and a couple of associate editors. The publication of overview articles in the transactions will be a service to our readers and appeal to the broad signal processing audience.

Throughout the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s (SPS’s) history, conferences have functioned as a main way to connect within the Society, bringing together the signal processing research community to discuss and debate, establish research collaborations, and have a good time. These immersive conference experiences, to which attendees travel from all over the world to be together for a set period of time, have certainly been challenged over these past years, but SPS leadership was able to guide and steer through the constant unanticipated changes, with continued financial stability and growing momentum for a more inclusive future. This article gives an overview of the evolution of SPS conferences in the past decade and presents the challenges ahead.

IEEE Signal Processing Magazine ( SPM ) is a fully edited magazine. This means that, after the review process, the final files provided by the authors are processed by a team of editors under the supervision and the responsibility of the magazine’s managing editor, Jessica Welsh. The contributions of Jessica and the editorial and production teams are very important, since they transform all the final files, figures, and images, into aesthetically pleasing articles that can have colorful sidebars, catchy, short titles, etc. Even if text is not changed substantially, the articles become much more visually attractive after they have been edited. These changes are unanimously appreciated by the authors, who usually cannot recognize their final articles!

: The project has successfully demonstrated reduced-rank, space-time equalization for high-speed wireless digital communications capable of reliably transmitting multimedia data in support of military operations in stressful environments involving multipath propagation. Research conducted as part of this effort was recognized by a number of awards including a Technical Achievement Award and a Distinguished Lecturer appointment from the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and two Best Paper Awards from the IEEE Communications Society. A key finding that fueled a number of innovations towards the end of the three-year effort was that adding a stage to the Multi-Stage Wiener Filter was exactly equivalent to taking a step of a Conjugate-Gradient (CG) search. A key innovation was the formulation of the matrix-vector product in the CG algorithm in terms of low-complexity FFT's for reduced computation and storage requirements. The results of this research was published extensively in a number of high-profile IEEE and SPIE conferences.

Serving as the editor-in-chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) is a privilege and a blessing. Three years ago, when I first assumed the responsibility, I expected a journey similar to prior ones with other publications. Now at the end of this one, I am immensely gratified by what we, the editorial team, have accomplished and what I, together with authors, readers, guest editors, and the entire editorial team, have learned.

PQR signal quality indexes: A method for real-time photoplethysmogram signal quality estimation based on noise interferences

Cairo, Egypt, will host the 2009 IEEE International Con ference on Image Processing (ICIP) 7-11 November 2009. This is the first time that ICIP will be held in the Middle East and only the second time that any major IEEE Signal Processing Society conference, ICASSP or ICIP, is taking place in this region (the first conference was ICASSP, which took place in Istanbul). ICIP 2009 is one of the main Society initiatives to reach out and have a signal processing global impact.

This article introduces the voice pre-processing and quality assessment dataset (VPQAD), a scalable resource developed to validate various pre-processing techniques and improve voice signal quality in noisy environments. The dataset comprises voice recordings from 50 participants aged 18–40, captured in controlled real-life conditions using Audio Technica AT2020 and SHURE SM58 microphones. These high-quality recordings, made under diverse noise levels and settings, could be used for testing and developing voice enhancement algorithms. The dataset includes detailed metadata on the environment and participant demographics for analyzing and improving speech clarity and intelligibility, particularly in challenging conditions. To protect privacy, all data have been anonymized. VPQAD has been made public to promote collaborative research and advance research in biometrics, telecommunications, assistive technologies, and other applications requiring clear voice communication.
IEEE SOCIETY/COUNCIL Signal Processing Society (SPS)
DATA TYPE/LOCATION Audio; Potsdam, NY, USA
DATA DOI/PID 10.21227/yb1h-hs38

Linear canonical transform play an important role in many fields of optics and signal processing society. Well known transforms in these fields such as the Fourier transform, the fractional Fourier transform, and the Fresnel transform can be looked at as special cases of the linear canonical transform. In this paper we obtain new sampling formulae for reconstructing signals that are band-limited or time-limited in the linear canonical transform sense. In the new sampling formulae, we use samples from both the signal and its Hilbert transform, but each taken at half the Nyquist rate of linear canonical transform domain
