Cooperative responses from a portable natural language query system
This paper positions AI as a useful tool in the creation and implementation of ESP courses. The paper argues that many course developers and instructors face a difficult challenge in understanding the needs of target learners, deciding learning objectives, creating relevant materials, and evaluating the success of learners when the specialist subject area of the learners diverges significantly from their own area of expertise. Traditionally, course developers and instructors may have turned to specialist informants to guide the process, but such a team-oriented approach to ESP can often be limited due to diverging interests, a difference in vision for pedagogy, power differences, and even simple logistics. This paper proposes using AI tools as support assistants for the ESP expert, serving in multiple roles through the design and implementation stages. As examples, the paper will describe how AI can serve in a useful role when creating and analyzing stakeholder surveys. It can also be used to synthesize the results of needs analysis into a well-formed set of learning objectives. It can also be used directly by learners in the classroom, supplementing traditional data-driven approaches with a natural language query system that greatly facilitates the access to target language and interpretation of language patterns. Finally, it can be used to assist in the evaluation of learner outputs, judging the appropriacy of learner language in highly specialized domains.

Natural language interfaces are revolutionizing how users interact with data-intensive systems by eliminating the need for specialized knowledge of query languages such as SQL. This study introduces a Natural Language Query System (NLQS) that utilizes Large Language Models (LLMs) to interpret user-generated natural language inputs and transform them into optimized SQL queries. The system is built on three primary components: natural language understanding, semantic mapping to underlying database schemas, and AI-driven SQL optimization techniques. Unlike conventional query builders, the LLM-based approach effectively resolves ambiguity, interprets contextual meaning, and supports complex multi-condition queries with higher precision. To ensure robustness, the system incorporates a validation layer responsible for detecting errors, refining query structure, and enhancing performance. Experimental analysis shows that the proposed NLQS significantly reduces query formulation time, minimizes manual intervention, and improves database accessibility for non-technical users. Overall, this work demonstrates the capability of LLMs to bridge the gap between human language and structured database operations, leading to more intuitive, efficient, and scalable information retrieval.

This paper describes an approach to solving a major problem in the information processing sciences— that of searching very large (5-50 billion characters) data bases of unstructured free-text for random queries within a reasonable time and at an affordable price. The need by information specialists and knowledge workers for large, fast low-cost text and document retrieval systems is growing rapidly. Conventional approaches to the problem have usually depended upon expensive, general purpose computers, upon special pre-preprocessing of the textual data (e.g. file inverting, indexing, abstracting, etc.), and upon elaborate, costly software. The resulting retrieval systems often cost hundreds of dollars per query and the full scanning of an uninverted, unstructured billion byte textual data base could take hours of computer services. However, in spite of these restrictions, such full text search systems have proved useful and even indispensible for many applications. Computer technology of the late 1960's and the 1970's, in both hardware and software (e.g., minicomputers, low-cost, high density disk storage, “chip” electronics, natural language query systems, etc.), have made i t practical to build special purpose, low-cost text retrieval systems. Such a system has been built, tested, and is now in a production stage. The system called the Associative File Processor (AFP), utilizes a conventional minicomputer (DEC's PDP-11/45) for control, off-the-shelf high density disks for storage, a special purpose parallel search module as a text term detector, and query and retrieval software. The AFP is currently being field tested at two sites. Full text, parallel searches on un-preprocessed textual data bases are being performed at the effective matching rates of 4 billion bytes per second (8K byte key memory times 500 Kbyte/second data stream). Estimated costs are 10 to 25 cents per query for a one billion byte data base. The costs per query and the time for searching increase in a linear fashion as data base increases. A basic architecture for the AFP is described and an implemented version is discussed. A more powerful term detector module is also under development. This system is designed around a finite state automaton algorithm.

In post pandemic instruction fueled by digital media and technology, distance learning emerges as a powerful opportunity for higher education collaboration. The Directorate of Students’ Learning, Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia opens opportunities for universities across Indonesia to have collaborative online learning with those students based on underprivileged regions in Indonesia. This research investigates a case of collaborative online learning project between two universities in East Java and East Nusa Tenggara province with two ESP courses designed collaboratively and implemented with shared classes in online mode. Through this case study, two things are explored during the program: challenges and opportunities in the stage of course development and course implementation. Two course developers, four university instructors, and thirteen selected students from both universities were involved in this study. Data collection combined interviews, virtual observations, and instructional documents. Analysis employed thematic layering and triangulation, revealing challenges in four areas: course development, technology readiness, teaching methods, and student support. However, rooms of improvement are there for more prepared future collaboration. Despite the challenges, collaborative distance learning conducted by both universities can be a lesson to learn for a better online instruction in the future amidst the pluralistic backgrounds of the students and problematic technology support.

Read moreAI as a Tool to Support Negotiation Research
This article explores ways in which AI tools can help negotiation scholars do their research, drawing on presentations delivered by Ray Friedman, Emily Hu, Gale Lucas, and Zhivar Sourati at the AI Negotiation Summit at MIT. AI can be used to automate transcript coding, applying negotiation-specific (e.g., “substantiation”) or general language (e.g,. “politeness” or “turn taking”) codes. AI can be trained to act as confederates in negotiation studies, providing human-like behavior in language patterns with high levels of consistency for experimental control, and there is potential for AI to act as subjects in negotiation studies. In these ways AI can help scholars conduct research more efficiently and effectively. However, there are still great challenges, such as the inability of AI to produce the variance of human behavior.
Read moreDevelopment of Teaching E-Modules on Atomic Structure Material Based on the Merdeka Curriculum
The purpose of this study was to develop and test the feasibility of materials and media, as well as to observe teachers' responses to e-learning modules on atomic structure based on the independent curriculum. This study uses the Research and Development method with the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. However, the development process is limited to the development stage with the aim of producing e-learning modules that are theoretically feasible based on expert assessment and user response, without empirically testing the effectiveness of the product. The module that has been developed is tested for feasibility by each of the 2 media experts and material experts to determine whether the module is suitable for use. In addition to the feasibility assessment, a response test to the product was also carried out involving 2 teachers from driving schools in Pontianak city. The results of the analysis in the material test were 88%, the media test was 84%, and the teacher response questionnaire to the teaching module was 96%. So it can be concluded that the teaching e-module on atomic structure material based on the independent curriculum developed is feasible to use as a learning tool because it has passed the feasibility assessment by material and media experts and received a very good response from chemistry learning teachers because it has passed the response test. The uniqueness of this research lies in the development of an e-learning module that systematically maps Learning Outcomes (CP) into Learning Objectives (TP) and Learning Objective Sequences (ATP), and is designed in an interactive digital format to overcome teachers' difficulties in planning lessons under the Merdeka Curriculum. Researchers suggest continuing this research at the next stage, namely implementation and evaluation to see the effectiveness of the teaching modules produced because the teaching modules can also be used by teachers in learning chemistry so as to make it easier for teachers to have teaching module references that are more flexible and can be accessed at any time.
