Application of Quality Function Deployment as an Integrative Method to Knowledge Management Implementation

This paper presents a guideline for developing student activities designed to enable the discovery and application of students' knowledge, as they seek to learn the discipline of Knowledge Management (KM). We describe a student group project, which was a required course assignment, and how this activity helped the students discover and apply new knowledge about KM systems development and implementation. With further analysis of three project cases, we show the most important outcome of the project was the demonstration of how to apply the principles of KM to an organisational environment, and thus it served as a practical learning experience for students to understand the various issues surrounding KM systems implementation.

Manajemen pengetahuan adalah suatu pengorganisasian pengetahuan yang dimiliki oleh individu dalam sebuah organisasi. Dengan manajemen pengetahuan, suatu pengetahuan yang dimiliki individu akan dapat menjadi pengetahuan organisasi sehingga bermanfaat bagi organisasi terutama dalam meningkatkan daya saing bisnis organisasi. Untuk mengelola dan mendokumentasikan pengetahuan sehingga menjadi referensi bagi karyawan dalam perusahaan diperlukan penyusunan dan penerapan sistem manajemen pengetahuan yang tepat. Penerapan sistem manajemen pengetahuan, tentunya harus didukung oleh fitur-fitur yang dibutuhkan untuk menyimpan dan mengorganisasikan pengetahuan yang ada. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, dirancang sistem manajemen pengetahuan yang dibuat dalam bentuk sistem pemograman berbasis web menggunakan bahasa pemograman PHP dengan Framework GTFW dan MySQL. Sistem manajemen pengetahuan memiliki fasilitas pencarian data dokumentasi, penyimpanan catatan masalah dan informasi berita serta fitur download data dari setiap dokumentasi yang ada.

Purpose – This paper aims to assess the readiness of Malaysian facilities management (FM) organizations in implementing knowledge management (KM) systems. Design/methodology/approach – The questionnaire survey was used to retrieve information on the readiness of FM organizations in Malaysia. Findings – The findings reveal that, although many FM organizations were capable and ready in terms of information technology, lack of human behaviour and organizational policy is still seen. Technology, policy and human behaviour are the factors that have a strong influence on the successful outcome of KM. Originality/value – This paper fulfils an identified need to study in implementing KM systems.

PurposeFocusing on the Indian context, with the increase in the amount of data and its analysis in health-care knowledge management (KM), the privacy concerns rise which results in loss of trust of an individual in e-health-care systems. Privacy issues in health care, specific to India, are caused by prevalent complacency, culture, politics, budget limitations, large population and infrastructures. Because of these factors, data security requires a backseat that allows easy access to confidential information. Furthermore, the prevalent culture affects health-care disclosure in India. In many cultures, disclosing sensitive personal health-care data is considered ill mannered. This leads to discrepancies in the recorded health-care data and a decrease in the level of treatment meted out. The results and statistics of treatments given do not match the records because of inaccurate data reporting. With the significant rise in the analysis and use of technology in health-care KM systems, it is important to understand the perception of KM in terms of its use and awareness about data sharing in the KM system. The purpose of the paper is to measure the perception of privacy issues in the context of Indian healthcare management systems.Design/methodology/approachTo measure the perception of the use of the KM system, a set of 20 questions was circulated with a sample size of 337 which includes health-care researchers, doctors, practitioners and patients. The questions focused upon the use, share the sensitive health data in the KM platform. All the demographic information such as age, sex, religion, occupation is recorded. The privacy of the individual is maintained while circulating the questionnaire. The usage of health KM system and its privacy is measured through means and t-test.FindingsThe results of the t-test were found positive. This research study finds that the privacy factor is important among the Indians to share the information with the KM repository. It is also found that medical practitioners or data custodians are not much serious about sensitive data is being stored for analysis. From the statistical perception of usage of KM and its privacy, new architecture and privacy guidelines were suggested which can be considered in future research.Research limitations/implicationsFrom the literature review, the questionnaire has developed which can help policymakers and hospital administrators collect information about KM processes in health-care organizations, and this can result in higher performance of health organizations. The privacy factor can also be included in typical health KM architecture ensure that while knowledge acquisition process, privacy of individual or organization can be maintained.Social implicationsKM enhances the value of corporations and business industries through knowledge production, distribution and provides reliable access to the knowledge resources. KM in health care can comprise a confluence of formal methodologies and techniques to facilitate the creation, identification, acquisition, development, preservation, dissemination and finally the utilization of the various facets of a health-care enterprise’s knowledge assets. According to IBM Global executive report in the year 2012, the entire health-care system has changed from diseases-centric to patient-centric. India is emerging in terms of revenue and employment in the health-care field. The advances of information and communication technology help the health-care sector streamline for data structure and access and health analytics.Originality/valueIn India, the KM is frequently used in health-care industries majorly by health-care practitioners and professionals. As health-care data and knowledge are considered to be sensitive, the privacy of an individual while using the data cannot be compromised. The proposed empirical work will provide a solution in determining the main barriers of implementing privacy policies that need to be solved first and to ensure effective implementation of KM in the health care of India.

Knowledge is the most important asset for an organization to create value and sustainable competitive advantage. This study deconstructs a knowledge management (KM) model for utilizing nursing knowledge assets in terms of KM processes and KM enablers. Knowledge management processes are the activities or initiatives an organization puts in place to enable and facilitate the creation, sharing and use of knowledge for organizational benefit. This study examines, analyzes and prioritizes the KM enablers to facilitate knowledge processes and foster the successful development of organizational knowledge. In doing so, this study applies fuzzy quality function deployment (QFD) to deploy the necessary enabler items in detail for KM implementation. Based on the analytical results of fuzzy QFD (FQFD) for the case-study hospital, the priority order of the KM enablers is measurement, leadership, technology and culture. The results of FQFD also show that reinforcing KM enablers is necessary to promote elements in the KM process for the case hospital during KM program implementation.

The success of Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) is ensured by the alignment of the technological infrastructure with other architectural elements of the organisation such as organisational forms, Knowledge Management (KM) process, human resource and reward systems. Despite the importance of the architectural alignment and KM, businesses tend to view KM as an information system project and focus on the implementation of KMS. The purpose of this research is to identify the architectural features of KM success organisations. The results of this research help managers to understand the architectural characteristics necessary to ensure KM success.

Aim/Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the knowledge management (KM) process and the performance of construction companies. The ultimate goal is to promote better efficiency and competitive advantage in the construction industry by making the best use of knowledge. Background: While attention to KM is currently on the rise, as shown by the number of studies conducted, research on KM in the construction industry of Indonesia is still very rare. However, organizational learning as the implementation of KM provides an opportunity to improve the construction industry, and thus there is an urgency to conduct research on this topic. Methodology: This study lasted for three months and used the survey method, with 100 questionnaires distributed to contractors of grade 6 and 7 on the islands of Java and Borneo in Indonesia. A total of 54 returned questionnaires were deemed complete and eligible for further analysis. Data analysis was performed using the structural equation modeling method with partial least squares (SEM PLS). Contribution: This study helps to measure the relationship value of the KM process and company performance. Findings: The results of this study indicate that the process of KM has a significant and positive influence on company performance, and there is a positive interaction in the process of KM and company performance as well. Recommendations for Practitioners: Construction companies need to perceive that activities undertaken in a construction project should always be assumed to be a KM process in order to make strategic and effective decisions that can result in improvements to customers, finance, internal business, learning, and growth. Recommendation for Researchers: Research on the KM process and information technology needs to be developed more, so that construction companies can apply this knowledge to explore problems and create solutions, resulting in methods to facilitate efficiency and effectiveness. Impact on Society: This paper helps to understand that KM activities provide initial benefits and guidance for companies that want to apply KM. Future Research: Innovative and new ideas to cultivate the KM process in the construction industry need to be explored and developed to improve the implementation.

This research focuses on the moderating effect of culture on the relationships between KMS and other variables affecting KMS in the service industry. The effects of a number of variables on KMS were examined via analysis and hypothesis testing. These variables included culture; people; process; strategy; and technology. The results show that culture and people have a substantial impact on KMS's performance, emphasizing the need of cultivating a supportive company culture and empowering employees. Furthermore, strategy and technology were shown to be critical in allowing effective knowledge management practices in the service industry. The research also investigates the moderating impacts of culture on these linkages, demonstrating that culture modulates the impact of process, technology, and strategy on KMS. However, it was shown that the interplay between culture and people did not substantially alter the link between people and KMS. These results provide useful insights for firms looking to improve their knowledge management methods, underlining the need to take culture into account and aligning it with strategic goals and technology solutions. While the study adds to our understanding of knowledge management in the service industry, further research is needed to investigate other elements and situations. Overall, this research has practical significance for firms looking to enhance their knowledge management activities and overall organizational performance.

Applying fuzzy quality function deployment to prioritize solutions of knowledge management for an international port in Taiwan

Knowledge Management (KM) is considered an important facilitator of SME survival and growth, creativity and flexibility. This study investigates the moderating effect of organizational culture (OC) and the mediating effects of leadership competency (LC) on the relationship between KM and SME sustainability. This study employs quantitative research approach, and the data was collected by administering structured surveys to SME leaders in various sectors. The survey assesses the practices of KM, leadership competencies, cultural attributes of the organization and sustainability outcomes. Hypotheses and mediation and moderation effects were examined using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for data analysis. Moderating effect of organizational culture is evaluated using interaction terms. This study preliminarily suggests that KM practices positively contribute to SME sustainability both directly and through leadership competency. Leadership competency acts as a key moderator that helps to link KM initiatives and the resulting sustainability performance. In addition, organizational culture moderates the KM-LC relationship, thus SMEs that have innovative and collaborative culture have strong relationship between KM and leadership performance. Implications of the study are provided for the SME managers in terms of the importance of implementing KM systems, leadership training, and fostering KM cultures. Therefore, the policymakers should provide deem to encourage the knowledge sharing and leadership training to make SMEs sustainable internationally.

PurposeThe relationship between knowledge management (KM) and research and development (R&D) management is intrinsically close. However, little attention has been paid to the development and implementation of KM systems for R&D organizations. The main objective of this current research is, from the perspective of evolutionary ecology, to suggest a framework of system design to link KM and R&D management.Design/methodology/approachThe chronological profile of R&D management systems over the past few decades is reviewed and the salient features of respective generations are identified. Then, the list of requirements for KM systems is suggested for each generation.FindingsFinds that these requirements constitute crucial variables for the design of KM systems and, as a whole, provide the building‐blocks for integrating R&D management and KM.Originality/valueThe proposed architecture is considered as a starting‐point and serves as a milestone in implementing KMS in accordance with the R&D characteristics of a particular firm.

Introduction. Today, in the era of the intellectualization of the economy, knowledge management plays an important role in building an effective strategy for the enterprise. The effective application of the knowledge management system at the enterprise reduces business risks, improves the speed and quality of decision-making processes, promotes innovative activity, and leads to an increase in the competitiveness of the enterprise. By applying an effective knowledge management system, an enterprise can achieve significant savings of resources, which is difficult to achieve using traditional management models and methods. The purpose of the paper is to research and analyze the knowledge management system of the enterprise, as well as to formulate recommendations for the development of effective technology for implementing the knowledge management system at the enterprise. Results. The knowledge management system of the enterprise today occupies a central place in the research of many domestic and foreign scientists. Its main elements are objects, subjects of knowledge, knowledge management goals and tasks, knowledge management processes, knowledge management functions and principles, approaches to knowledge management, as well as knowledge management culture. To improve the process of development and implementation of the knowledge management system at the enterprise, the authors proposed a recommended technology that consists of 9 consecutive stages, the priority of which are: identification of the business bottlenecks, analysis of the knowledge available at the enterprise, development of the enterprise’s knowledge management strategy, creation of a department at the enterprise that will be responsible for knowledge management, as well as the development of knowledge management tools. Conclusion. Implementation and application of the recommended technology for the development and implementation of the knowledge management system will allow the enterprise to clearly organize the knowledge management system and thus improve the efficiency of operations and achieve resource savings that cannot be achieved using traditional management mechanisms.

This fragmentation in the application domain makes it difficult to compare and define a set of core features of mobile KM systems. Analysing and comparing features and strategies of several systems from different application domains makes it possible to identify the core features that form a mobile KM system. Consequently, we may use these core features to define the evaluation and comparison framework of mobile KM systems, regardless of its application domain. The purpose of this work is to define these core features and discuss their importance, through the analysis of six mobile KM systems, highlighting the positive and the negative aspects of the KM processes. This study explores the role of knowledge management (KM) processes in enhancing strategic performance within private banks in the Erbil-Kurdistan region of Iraq. Using a quantitative research approach, data was collected from 122 employees through structured questionnaires and analyzed using multiple regression and correlation analyses. The findings reveal that KM processes—Knowledge Management Practices, Knowledge Creation, Knowledge Sharing, Knowledge Storage and Retrieval, and addressing Challenges in KM Implementation—significantly influence strategic performance. Among these, Knowledge Storage and Retrieval demonstrated the strongest impact, followed by Knowledge Management Practices and Knowledge Creation. The R-squared value of 82% indicates that KM processes collectively explain a substantial portion of the variance in strategic performance. The study highlights the importance of fostering innovation, collaboration, and efficient knowledge systems to drive organizational success. Recommendations include investing in KM infrastructure, promoting a knowledge-sharing culture, and addressing implementation challenges. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on KM's critical role in achieving strategic objectives and provides practical implications for organizations aiming to enhance performance through effective knowledge management.
