Applications of Machine Learning in Cyber Security Domain

In recent years, significant advancements have been made in cyber security, particularly through the application of machine learning (ML) methods. ML-based techniques have enhanced system security by effectively distinguishing between malicious and benign objects across various domains, including spam email detection, social media content filtering, intrusion detection systems, and malware detection. This paper focuses on the specific area of ML-based malware detection and its advantages over traditional methods, such as improved accuracy and the ability to generalize to unknown threats. Despite these advancements, ML-based malware detection systems are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, especially in black-box scenarios where the internal workings of the detection model are not accessible. This paper provides a comprehensive review of adversarial attacks on black-box malware detection systems and examines the current defense mechanisms against these attacks. Understanding the challenges and strategies in this field, this review aims to offer insights into enhancing the robustness and security of ML-based malware detection systems.

Artificial intelligence (AI), with its technologies such as machine perception, robotics, natural language processing, expert systems, and machine learning (ML) with its subset deep learning, have transformed patient care and administration in all fields of modern medicine. For many clinicians, however, the nature, scope, and resulting possibilities of ML and deep learning might not yet be fully clear. This narrative review provides an overview of the application of ML and deep learning in musculoskeletal medicine. It first introduces the concept of AI and machine learning and its associated fields. Different machine concepts such as supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning will then be presented with current applications and clinical perspective. Finally deep learning applications will be discussed. With significant improvements over the last decade, ML and its subset deep learning today offer potent tools for numerous applications to implement in clinical practice. While initial setup costs are high, these investments can reduce workload and cost globally. At the same time, many challenges remain, such as standardisation in data labelling and often insufficient validity of the obtained results. In addition, legal aspects still will have to be clarified. Until good analyses and predictions are obtained by an ML tool, patience in training and suitable data sets are required. Awareness of the strengths of ML and the limitations that lie within it will help put this technique to good use.

Machine Learning (ML) has revolutionized various domains, offering predictive capabilities in several areas. However, there is growing evidence in the literature that ML approaches are not always used appropriately, leading to incorrect and sometimes overly optimistic results. One reason for this inappropriate use of ML may be the increasing availability of machine learning tools, leading to what we call the “push the button” approach. While this approach provides convenience, it raises concerns about the reliability of outcomes, leading to challenges such as incorrect performance evaluation. In particular, this paper addresses a critical issue in ML, known as data leakage, where unintended information contaminates the training data, impacting model performance evaluation. Indeed, crucial steps in ML pipeline can be inadvertently overlooked, leading to optimistic performance estimates that may not hold in real-world scenarios. The discrepancy between evaluated and actual performance on new data is a significant concern. In particular, this paper categorizes data leakage in ML, discussing how certain conditions can propagate through the ML approach workflow. Furthermore, it explores the connection between data leakage and the specific task being addressed, investigates its occurrence in Transfer Learning framework, and compares standard inductive ML with transductive ML paradigms. The conclusion summarizes key findings, emphasizing the importance of addressing data leakage for robust and reliable ML applications considering tasks and generalization goals.

Machine learning (ML) is being used to improve intrusion detection mechanisms and identification in cyber security. Network data volume scaling (with the help of Machine learning) — Automated analysis and pattern recognition for large amounts of network-data, thereby detection of anomalies / potentially malicious activities that escape current rule-based techniques. By training ML models on historical data, these models can learn benign network behavior as well the anomalies in them that may result from malicious activities. The purpose of this essay/report is to begin taking a look under the hood at how ML can be used for security threat detection and analysis in-networking on an ongoing basis. This paper covers the automation of ML algorithms to enhance network security. Given the current state of electronic threats and their evolution, traditional security methods are typically insufficient. ML can analyze large volumes of data, learn patterns from it and this makes it suitable to complement network defense mechanisms. It then discusses different ML applications in network cybersecurity: intrusion detection, anomaly detection, spam and malware analysis; which the paper characterizes. It analyzes the potential, benefits and constrains of major ML methods in network security like supervised learning; unsupervised learning and reinforcement-learning. Finally, this paper represents recent progress in the use and impact of ML techniques along with case studies.The paper discusses the existing difficulties in the field such as the necessity for datasets and the vulnerability of machine learning models to adversarial attacks.T he paper also highlights avenues for exploration by focusing on developing scalable security solutions based on machine learning that are resilient and flexible.The goal of this examination is to offer both researchers and industry professionals valuable perspectives into the opportunities and obstacles linked to utilizing machine learning, in the domain of network security. ML methods have potential to improve network security by addressing the challenges posed by the increasing cyber threats that traditional security measures struggle to combat effectively over time. One key strength of ML lies in its capacity to analyze datasets and identify intricate patterns efficiently. The research paper delves into applications of ML in enhancing network security. The list covers security tools like Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) examining malware and phishing attempts as well as anomalies in network activity and user behavior analysis (UEBA). The study explores both supervised and unsupervised learning methods. How they are used for quick threat detection and response in real time scenarios.You will find case studies and recent developments that showcase the implementation and effectiveness of these strategies.In addition the article delves into the obstacles linked to using machine learning techniques in network security including the necessity, for datasets, The paper's goal is to give an enlightening summary to scholars and practitioners about how machine learning can be applied to network security in order to provide solutions that are robust, adaptive, and scalable. To this end, it touches on several relevant aspects. One is the threat posed by adversarial attacks on the sorts of models that are likely to be used in this context. Machine learning applications for anomaly detection in Smart Water Metering Networks: A systematic review

Edge computing enables smart IoT-based systems via concurrent and continuous execution of latency-sensitive machine learning (ML) applications. These edge-based machine learning systems are often battery-powered (i.e., energy-limited). They use heterogeneous resources with diverse computing performance (e.g., CPU, GPU, and/or FPGA) to fulfill the latency constraints of ML applications. The challenge is to allocate user requests for different ML applications on the Heterogeneous Edge Computing Systems (HEC) with respect to both the energy and latency constraints of these systems. To this end, we study and analyze resource allocation solutions that can increase the on-time task completion rate while considering the energy constraint. Importantly, we investigate edge-friendly (lightweight) multi-objective mapping heuristics that do not become biased toward a particular application type to achieve the objectives; instead, the heuristics consider "fairness" across the concurrent ML applications in their mapping decisions. Performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed heuristic outperforms widely-used heuristics in heterogeneous systems in terms of the latency and energy objectives, particularly, at low to moderate request arrival rates. We observed 8.9% improvement in on-time task completion rate and 12.6% in energy-saving without imposing any significant overhead on the edge system.

Chemical heuristics have been fundamental to the advancement of chemistry and materials science. These heuristics are typically established by scientists using knowledge and creativity to extract patterns from limited datasets. Machine learning offers opportunities to perfect this approach using computers and larger datasets. Here, we discuss the relationships between traditional heuristics and machine learning approaches. We show how traditional rules can be challenged by large-scale statistical assessment and how traditional concepts commonly used as features are feeding the machine learning techniques. We stress the waste involved in relearning chemical rules and the challenges in terms of data size requirements for purely data-driven approaches. Our view is that heuristic and machine learning approaches are at their best when they work together.

Machine learning applications have momentously enhanced the quality of human life. The past few decades have seen the progression and application of machine learning in diverse medical fields. With the rapid advancement in technology, machine learning has secured prominence in the prediction and classification of diseases through medical images. This technological expansion in medical imaging has enabled the automated recognition of anatomical landmarks in radiographs. In this context, it is decisive that machine learning is capable of supporting clinical decision support systems with image processing and whose scope is found in the cephalometric analysis. Though the application of machine learning has been seen in dentistry and medicine, its progression in orthodontics has grown slowly despite promising outcomes. Therefore, the present study has performed a critical review of recent studies that have focused on the application of machine learning in 3D cephalometric analysis consisting of landmark identification, decision making, and diagnosis. The study also focused on the reliability and accuracy of existing methods that have employed machine learning in 3D cephalometry. In addition, the study also contributed by outlining the integration of deep learning approaches in cephalometric analysis. Finally, the applications and challenges faced are briefly explained in the review. The final section of the study comprises a critical analysis from which the most recent scope will be comprehended.

This chapter is focused on exploring the integration of machine learning (ML) in the enhancement of AI-based urban transportation systems to adapt to the shifting mobility challenges in contemporary cities. Machine learning in transport networks: Using predictive analytics, real-time statistics, and optimization algorithms, machine learning is used in a transport network to facilitate the transport network, introducing improved commuting by minimizing traffic and improving operational efficiency and user satisfaction. Big data collection from sensors, GPS, and IoT devices is increasingly used for intelligent decision-making in traffic flow prediction, autonomous vehicle navigation, public transport demand forecasting, and dynamic routing. It emphasizes the importance of sustainable and inclusive solutions across various sectors, addressing ethical implications, data privacy, and infrastructure scalability. This chapter explores the future of urban transportation through the application and direction of machine learning in transforming it into a connected and efficient ecosystem.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) can progress to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and liver fibrosis, contributing to a heavier global health burden. Non-invasive diagnostic tools developed using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), two representative artificial intelligence algorithms, are increasingly being explored for MASH and its related fibrosis assessment. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of different ML and DL models and identify the top-performing models for diagnosing MASH and associated liver fibrosis. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library from inception to May 18, 2025. Pooled area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUROC) values with 95 % confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive values, and negative predictive values were also recorded. Of 4,314 studies initially identified, 106 met the inclusion criteria, with 35 studies (ML: n=28; DL: n=7) providing data for analysis. Logistic Regression and Neural Network are the most commonly algorithms applied in ML and DL, respectively. The pooled AUROCs for diagnosing MASH were 0.833 (95 %CI: 0.806-0.860) for ML models and 0.841 (95 %CI: 0.782-0.900) for DL models. Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and ResNet50 were the best-performing models for diagnosing MASH within ML and DL algorithms, respectively, achieving corresponding AUROCs of 0.920 (95 %CI: 0.916-0.924) and 0.960 (95 %CI: 0.951-0.969). For fibrosis diagnosis, ML models had a pooled AUROC of 0.826 (95 %CI: 0.792-0.860), with Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) achieving the highest AUROC of 0.960 (95 %CI: 0.950-0.970). DL models yielded the pooled AUROC of 0.875 (95 %CI: 0.816-0.934) for fibrosis diagnosis. Both ML and DL models demonstrated strong diagnostic performance for MASH and liver fibrosis, with DL achieving marginally higher AUROCs. AI-driven approaches show promise in MASLD management.

This study provides an extensive review of over 200 journal papers focusing on Machine Learning (ML) algorithms’ use for promoting a sustainable management of the marine and coastal environments. The research covers various facets of ML algorithms, including data preprocessing and handling, modeling algorithms for distinct phenomena, model evaluation, and use of dynamic and integrated models. Given that machine learning modeling relies on experience or trial-and-error, examining previous applications in marine and coastal modeling is proven to be beneficial. The performance of different ML methods used to predict wave heights was analyzed to ascertain which method was superior with various datasets. The analysis of these papers revealed that properly developed ML methods could successfully be applied to multiple aspects. Areas of application include data collection and analysis, pollutant and sediment transport, image processing and deep learning, and identification of potential regions for aquaculture and wave energy activities. Additionally, ML methods aid in structural design and optimization and in the prediction and classification of oceanographic parameters. However, despite their potential advantages, dynamic and integrated ML models remain underutilized in marine projects. This research provides insights into ML’s application and invites future investigations to exploit ML’s untapped potential in marine and coastal sustainability.

Computer-aided detection using Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) shows tremendous growth in the medical field. Medical images are considered as the actual origin of appropriate information required for diagnosis of disease. Detection of disease at the initial stage, using various modalities, is one of the most important factors to decrease mortality rate occurring due to cancer and tumors. Modalities help radiologists and doctors to study the internal structure of the detected disease for retrieving the required features. ML has limitations with the present modalities due to large amounts of data, whereas DL works efficiently with any amount of data. Hence, DL is considered as the enhanced technique of ML where ML uses the learning techniques and DL acquires details on how machines should react around people. DL uses a multilayered neural network to get more information about the used datasets. This study aims to present a systematic literature review related to applications of ML and DL for the detection along with classification of multiple diseases. A detailed analysis of 40 primary studies acquired from the well-known journals and conferences between Jan 2014–2022 was done. It provides an overview of different approaches based on ML and DL for the detection along with the classification of multiple diseases, modalities for medical imaging, tools and techniques used for the evaluation, description of datasets. Further, experiments are performed using MRI dataset to provide a comparative analysis of ML classifiers and DL models. This study will assist the healthcare community by enabling medical practitioners and researchers to choose an appropriate diagnosis technique for a given disease with reduced time and high accuracy.

Offloading footwear is a critical intervention for preventing and treating diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), as it reduces plantar pressure (PP) and promotes healing. However, decision-making around its prescription remains fragmented, with variability in feature selection, limited personalization, and diverse evaluation approaches. While guidelines, knowledge-based systems, and machine learning (ML) applications have explored elements of decision-making, no clinical decision support system (CDSS) currently exists to provide feature-level prescriptions. We conducted a narrative review of 45 studies, including 12 guidelines/protocols, 25 knowledge-based systems, and eight ML applications. Studies published from inception to August 2025 were included. Studies were thematically analyzed by type of knowledge, decision logic, evaluation methods, and associated technologies. Guidelines emphasize PP thresholds (≤200 kPa or ≥25–30% reduction) but lack detailed outputs. Knowledge-based systems apply rule-based and sensor-driven logic, integrating PP monitoring, adherence tracking, and usability testing. ML applications introduce predictive classification, optimization, and generative models, achieving high computational accuracy but with limited explainability and clinical validation. Evaluation practices remain fragmented: biomechanical testing dominates protocols, usability and adherence assessments are common in knowledge-based systems, while ML studies emphasize technical accuracy without linking to long-term clinical outcomes. From this synthesis, we propose a five-component framework for CDSS development that discusses: (1) minimum viable dataset, (2) hybrid decision architecture combining rules, optimization, and explainable ML, (3) structured feature-level outputs, (4) continuous validation and evaluation, and (5) integration into clinical and telehealth workflows. The proposed framework presents a pathway to transform fragmented approaches into scalable, patient-centered CDSSs. Prioritizing interoperable datasets, explainable models, and outcome-driven evaluation will be critical for clinical adoption and improved DFU care.

This comprehensive review explores the design and applications of machine learning (ML) techniques to acoustic metamaterials (AMs) and phononic crystals (PnCs), with a particular focus on deep learning (DL). AMs and PnCs, characterized by artificially designed microstructures and geometries, offer unique acoustic properties for precise control and manipulation of sound waves. ML, including DL, in combination with traditional artificial design have promoted the design process, enabling data-driven approaches for feature identification, design optimization, and intelligent parameter search. ML algorithms process extensive AM data to discover novel structures and properties, enhancing overall acoustic performance. This review presents an in-depth exploration of applications associated with ML techniques in AMs and PnCs, highlighting specific advantages, challenges and potential solutions of applying of using ML algorithms associated with ML techniques. By bridging acoustic engineering and ML, this review paves the way for future breakthroughs in acoustic research and engineering.
