Applying NLP Techniques to Semantic Document Retrieval Application for Personal Desktop

This review examines a sample of interactive information retrieval (IR) systems within the framework of a design challenge set forth by John Bennett in 1971. Bennett directed his challenge to a group of information scientists who attended The User Interface for Interactive Search of Bibliographic Data Bases Workshop. During the workshop, participants exchanged their insights and experiences on various aspects of user interface requirements for interactive IR systems and discussed system design features that could result in the design of more effective user interfaces for information retrieval. The main goals of this review are to characterize interactive IR design trends over time, examine the extent to which IR systems have responded to Bennett's design challenge, and to suggest potential future research directions and challenges.

This paper presents an iterative and interactive information retrieval (IR) system for Web search using formal concept analysis (FCA). FCA provides a natural way to organise objects according to their properties and it has been used in recent work to organise search engine results. The navigation over the lattice helps the user to explore a structured and synthetic result. Such a lattice contains concepts that are relevant and others that are not relevant regarding a given IR task. In this way, lattices are introduced in an interactive and iterative system. The user expresses his negative or positive agreement with some concept of the lattice in respect of his objective of IR. These user choices are converted into operations over the lattice. The lattice is dynamically updated for a better fit to the request.

A general-purpose, interactive computerized information retrieval system specially suitable for the retrieval of bibliographic information from a small scale database. (DB) containing up to 15000 records is described. The user defines fields in terms of tags through the data definition processor which provides flexibility for the record structure. Another processor creates the DB from an off-line input file containing the tag(s) followed by the data for the field(s) supplied by the user. Retrieval of information is carried out by the query processor in an interactive manner. It provides options to (i) select a descriptor (the postings are displayed; (ii) combine 2 sets at a time; (iii) display the different sets chosen; and iv) print the chosen set(s) with full record details or specified tag fields only. The package is developed on an Usha-Alpha 1042 system using Alpha BASIC language under AMOS operating system.

Since Information Retrieval (IR) is an interactive process in general, it is important to study Interactive Information Retrieval (IIR), where we would attempt to model and optimize an entire interactive retrieval process (rather than a single query) with consideration of many different ways a user can potentially interact with a search engine. This tutorial systematically reviews the progress of research in IIR with an emphasis on the most recent progress in the development of models, algorithms, and evaluation strategies for IIR. It starts with a broad overview of research in IIR and then gives an introduction to formal models for IIR using a cooperative game framework and covering decision-theoretic models such as the Interface Card Model and Probability Ranking Principle for IIR. Next, it provides a review of some representative specific techniques and algorithms for IIR, such as various forms of feedback techniques and diversification of search results, followed by a discussion of how an IIR system should be evaluated and multiple strategies proposed recently for evaluating IIR using user simulation. The tutorial ends with a brief discussion of the major open challenges in IIR and some of the most promising future research directions.

Both user involvement and system support play important roles in applying search tactics. To apply search tactics in the information retrieval (IR) processes, users make decisions and take actions in the search process, while IR systems assist them by providing different system features. After analyzing 61 participants’ information searching diaries and questionnaires we identified various types of user involvement and system support in applying different types of search tactics. Based on quantitative analysis, search tactics were classified into 3 groups: user‐dominated, system‐dominated, and balanced tactics. We further explored types of user involvement and types of system support in applying search tactics from the 3 groups. The findings show that users and systems play major roles in applying user‐dominated and system‐dominated tactics, respectively. When applying balanced tactics, users and systems must collaborate closely with each other. In this article, we propose a model that illustrates user involvement and system support as they occur in user‐dominated tactics, system‐dominated tactics, and balanced tactics. Most important, IR system design implications are discussed to facilitate effective and efficient applications of the 3 groups of search tactics.

Cross language information retrieval (CLIR) is a retrieval process in which the user fires queries in one language to retrieve information from another (different) language. The diversity of information and language barriers are the serious issues for communication and cultural exchange across the world. To solve such barriers, Cross language information retrieval system, are nowadays in strong demand. CLIR is a subset of Information Retrieval (IR) system. Information Retrieval deals with finding useful information from a large collection of unstructured, structured and semi-structured data to a user query where the query is a set of keywords. Information Retrieval can be classified into different classes such as Monolingual information retrieval, Bi-Lingual Information Retrieval, Multilingual information retrieval and Cross language information retrieval. This paper focuses on the various IR variants and techniques used in CLIR system. Further, based on available literature, a number of challenges and issues in CLIR have been identified and discussed. It gives an overview of the advantages, limitations, tools available in CLIR research. It also describes new application areas of CLIR such as medical, multimedia, question answering system etc. The need for exploring and building more specialized information system that enable speakers of an Odia language to discover valuable information beyond linguistic and cultural barriers. This study is aimed at building an experimental CLIR system between one of the under-resourced language (i.e. Odia) and one of the most commonly used online language (i.e. English) in future.

Humans have used electronic information retrieval (IR) systems for more than 50 years as they evolved from experimental systems to full-scale Web search engines and digital libraries. The fields of library and information science (LIS), cognitive science, human factors and computer science have historically been the leading disciplines in conducting research that seeks to model human interaction with IR systems for all kinds of information related behaviors. As technology problems have been mastered, the theoretical and applied framework for studying human interaction with IR systems has evolved from systems-centered to more user-centered, or cognitive-centered approaches. However, cognitive information retrieval (CIR) research that focuses on user interaction with IR systems is still largely under-funded and is often not included at computing and systems design oriented conferences. But CIR-focused research continues, and there are signs that some IR systems designers in academia and the Web search business are realizing that user behavior research can provide valuable insights into systems design and evaluation. The goal of our book is to provide an overview of new CIR research directions. This book does not provide a history of the research field of CIR. Instead, the book confronts new ways of looking at the human information condition with regard to our increasing need to interact with IR systems. The need has grown due to a number of factors, including the increased importance of information to more people in this information age. Also, IR was once considered document-oriented, but has now evolved to include multimedia, text, and other information objects. As a result, IR systems and their complexity have proliferated as users and user purposes for using them have also proliferated. Human interaction with IR systems can often be frustrating as people often lack an understanding of IR system functionality. New more holistic directions in CIR are emerging that conceptualize human-IR system interaction at the human-computer interaction level (taking into account interface issues), the information behavior level (taking into account the role of IR system interaction in the total range of people’s information behaviors), and the

MESSIDOR is an interactive information retrieval system. It differs from current systems in that it allows the simultaneous search of several bibliographic databases. The databases may be on different sites and may use different query languages (MISTRAL, QUEST,...). These local languages are invisible to the users of MESSIDOR. They are all translated to a single language. We describe MESSIDOR's goals, system architecture, user language and some details of the implementation. The system is implemented on a MICRAL 80-30 microcomputer.

The NASA/RECON educational program in interactive information retrieval systems

The Web has become a large repository of documents (or pages) written in many different languages. In this context, traditional information retrieval (IR) techniques cannot be used whenever the user query and the documents being retrieved are in different languages. To address this problem, new cross‐language information retrieval (CLIR) techniques have been proposed. In this work, we describe a method for cross‐language retrieval of medical information. This method combines query terms and related medical concepts obtained automatically through a categorization procedure. The medical concepts are used to create a linguistic abstraction that allows retrieval of information in a language‐independent way, minimizing linguistic problems such as polysemy. To evaluate our method, we carried out experiments using the OHSUMED test collection, whose documents are written in English, with queries expressed in Portuguese, Spanish, and French. The results indicate that our cross‐language retrieval method is as effective as a standard vector space model algorithm operating on queries and documents in the same language. Further, our results are better than previous results in the literature.

Information Retrieval (IR) systems aim to retrieve data that satisfies certain requirements and constitute an important service in many types of networks, including Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs). In current DTN based IR systems, the data that satisfies a query is assumed to be stored on a single node. Therefore, once a node receives a query in which it has the corresponding data, the query can be resolved completely. However, in scenarios where a query requires data from multiple nodes, these IR systems may fail. Henceforth, in this paper, we propose Distributed Data-Centric Information Retrieval (DDC-IR), a data centric IR system that supports all query types; e.g., continuous and complex. More importantly, it is designed specifically to operate in DTNs. It also incorporates a new packet, aka Query Reply Packet, that includes both a query and one or more replies. We show how this packet facilitates efficient query resolution and enables data centric routing. In addition, it uses caching so that nodes store popular queries that has the effect of speeding up query resolution. We have conducted an extensive simulation study to compare DDC-IR to state of the art IR systems using the popular Random Waypoint model and a trace-file containing student movements on a campus. The results show that DDC-IR is able to resolve 50 % more queries and has an 80 % lower buffer occupancy level than existing IR systems. We also tested DDC-IR in networks with varying sizes. For networks with 100 nodes, DDC-IR is able to resolve queries while current IR systems fail to resolve any queries. In particular, when the number of nodes increases, current IR systems fail to resolve any queries, whilst DDC-IR is able to resolve complex and continuous queries. The influence of the number of sub-queries on query resolution time is also studied. Specifically, when the number of sub-queries in a complex query increases from five to nine, DDC-IR uses 50 % more time to resolve a query. In comparison, prior IR systems fail to resolve any queries.

Ranking is likely the most important process of an information retrieval (IR) system that will be used to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of an IR system. This paper aims to produce the implementation of fuzzy logic controller of Mamdani-type fuzzy inference system for defining the ranking function by using the BM25 model in the Malay IR system that also includes the Malay Stemmer. The result of the ranking function then will be compared to the result of vector space model that is also applied in Malay IR system and be evaluated using relevant document by the hadith expert. The results showed that FBMIR has slightly outperformed vector space model on three topic set of query results such as 'Iman', 'Ilmu' and 'Wuduk' on the precision at rank 10 and the percentage of no relevant document in the top ten retrieved measures.

Collaborative Information Retrieval in an information-intensive domain

The goal of interactive cross-lingual information retrieval systems is to support users in formulating effective queries and selecting the documents which satisfy their information needs regardless of the language of these documents. This dissertation aims at harnessing user-system interaction, extracting the added value and integrating it back into the system to improve cross-lingual information retrieval for successive users. To achieve this, user input at different interaction points will be evaluated. This will, among others, include interaction during user-assisted query translations, implicit and explicit relevance feedback and social tags. To leverage this input, explorative studies need to be conducted to determine beneficial user input and the methods of extracting it.

Videotex system is an interactive two-way information retrieval system providing a host of information from its vast database via the telephone network. It allows the subscriber to request information by dialling up the videotex computer; select pages of text and pictorial information and have them displayed on the screens of adapted home television sets.
