Environmental engineering education at universities is a rapidly changing field globally. Traditionally it has resided in the civil engineering program addressing water and wastewater quality, treatment, design and regulatory issues. In recent years environmental engineering has become a much broader field encompassing water, wastewater, soil pollution, air pollution, risk assessment, ecosystems, human health, toxicology, sustainable development, regulatory aspects and much more. The need to introduce environmental engineering/green engineering/pollution prevention/design for the environment concepts to undergraduate engineering students has become recognized to be increasingly important. This need is being driven in part through the US Engineering Accreditation Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology criteria 2000. Thus there has been a major shift in environmental engineering education and it no longer resides only within the civil engineering discipline. This paper focuses on the development of innovative curricula for a brand new engineering program at Rowan University that integrates environmental education for all engineers. A common course known as "engineering clinic" was developed for all engineering students throughout their eight semesters of engineering education. One of the clinic goals is to integrate engineering design and the environment. The program, in its seventh year, indicates successful implementation of environmental education in all four engineering disciplines in their course work and clinics.

Nowadays all documents and studies related to sustainable development emphasize the need for a change of attitude and the responsibility of the universities for its implementation. Depend on this objective of environmental engineering BSc education is to develop competences like complex system approach, problem recognition and resolution, lifelong learning and responsible attitude for the environment in addition to high level scientific knowledge. To achieve this goal, besides professional academic training, environment education needs to be implemented, where project pedagogy -as the strategy of environment pedagogy-can be efficiently applied. The study aims to prove the effectiveness of project education in terms of professional knowledge as well as in environmental attitudes by the results of project and practical training with an ecological-minded. This paper elaborates a field practice in Aggtelek National Park, Hungary. Based on the results it can be stated, that project pedagogy and the field practice can be well integrated with traditional pedagogical methods and may become their efficient supplement in environmental engineering BSc education.

PT X Tbk is a company engaged in the CPO processing industry from palm oil. This company processes from CPO or crude palm oil raw materials which in the process of operation produce hazardous and toxic waste (B3) in the form of liquid waste and solid waste. Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Health No. 6 of 2021 concerning Procedures and Requirements for the Management of Hazardous and Toxic Waste. The management of hazardous and toxic solid waste (B3) carried out by PT X, Tbk includes identification and inventory, packaging, labeling and symbolization, storage, external transportation to third parties and utilization of B3 waste.

Case studies are pedagogic tools that impart learning experiences through simulated problem-solving and discussion-provoking exercises that describe "real-world" situations.Edwin F. Gay, the first dean of Harvard Business School ͑HBS͒, is credited with adapting the case method of instruction in his college as early as 1911 ͑Harvard Business School 2005͒.HBS published its first case study in 1921, and today, the college develops approximately 350 cases each year and sells 6,000,000 cases for use in business courses across the world.Although case studies have clearly evolved into powerful and critical components of professional programs in business, medical, law, and military schools, they remain less utilized in modern engineering education.Incorporating the case method throughout a professional curriculum exposes students to a variety of practical situations applicable to their field of study.For example, a typical business student studies up to 500 cases in an MBA program.Case studies provide insights into the approach used by practicing professionals to resolve real-world issues and have a tendency to empower young graduates with a sense of déjà vu when they encounter similar situations in the real-world.Such simulated experiential learning is a major component of most professional programs and can fill a critical need in the education of today's environmental engineers.Case studies are not merely a professor's stories.They utilize synthesis of knowledge and applied problem solving to illustrate how engineering works in a societal context, and they can serve as highly effective learning tools for preparing a modern environmental engineering workforce.

This research was conducted at PT PLN Nusantara Power UP Paiton, one of the largest coal-fired power plants (PLTU) in Indonesia, which focuses on reducing the generation of hazardous and toxic oil waste through the implementation of an oil purification system. The use of large amounts of lubricating oil in the Electro-Hydraulic System (EHS) has the potential to produce high amounts of used oil waste. To address this, the company implemented two main technologies, namely Water Content and Varnish Removal, which function to reduce water content and varnish layers so that the oil can be reused without reducing engine performance. This research used a quantitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through field observations, interviews, and operational documentation from 2021 to 2024. The results showed that the oil purification system was able to reduce hazardous and toxic waste generation by 11.46 tons over four years. In addition to providing environmental benefits, the implementation of this system also resulted in savings in oil waste costs of approximately Rp6,200,560,000. Technically, purification maintains engine performance by reducing water and varnish content, while from an environmental perspective, this activity supports the principle of reduce in hazardous and toxic waste management. Overall, the oil purification system has proven effective in improving operational efficiency, extending oil life, and supporting sustainable waste management for industrial operations.

The paper describes Environmental Engineering education in Germany. The dual system of engineering education is outlined having scientific-oriented programmes at university level and application-oriented programmes at ‘school of engineers’ level. The historical development of Environmental Engineering and its main topics are described as well as its common integration in the study programme of Civil Engineering. The paper then focusses on the educational programmes for Environmental Engineering itself. The organisation in a preparatory module, a basic subject module and a specialized module is discussed. Topics, special courses and the time frame of the education programmes in Environmental Engineering are presented. The programmes of 3 selected universities, Hannover, Kaiserslautern and Cottbus, are described in greater detail and their specific character is outlined.

The problems posed by hazardous wastes are beginning to be a priority concern of the new Philippine government, possibly due to the increasing number of transnational companies like the semiconductor industry, as well as local firms, which are generating wastes considered hazardous to health and the environment. The Philippines, like any Third World country is not properly equipped in terms of equipment and technical expertise to deal with these wastes, although steps are being done to define the regulatory and enforcement responsibilities of various government agencies. The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), a policy making body of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is seeing that hazardous waste management is made an integral part of the industrial planning process. In the case of new industrial projects, environmental impact assessments are used to balance economic growth with ecological protection. Other activities of the EMB are geared towards providing baseline information that would eventually lead into the development of standards for hazardous waste management, environmental monitoring and the regulation of hazardous waste disposal.

The main natural gas industry activities that may produce by-product or wastes are exploration, production, storage, gathering, processing, transmission, distribution or some combination of these. Compressor station, for example, generates various types and quantities of waste, which must be managed responsibly, in a manner that does not threaten human health or the environment.It is helpful to identify types and quantities of waste produced, especially hazardous and toxic material (B3), in order to determine waste disposal options and to prepare management procedures in advance of waste being generated. In order side, regulatory body has provided some regulations regarding hazardous and toxic waste management. Finally, it is important to evaluate the risk of hazardous and toxic wastes in order to provide waste management policy. These topics will be discussed in detail in this paper.

In Indonesia, waste produced during drilling activities of the oil and gas operations are categorized hazardous and toxic referred to the Government Regulation No.18 year 1999 regarding The Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management. This regulation considers drilling mud and cuttings as Hazardous and Toxic Waste. The State Owned Oil Company (PERTAMINA) and its Production Sharing Contractors (PSCs) have a difficulty in implementing the regulation due to technical, scientific, and economical reasons. To solve the problem, PERTAMINA and PSCs proactively proposed and negotiated a ‘self-designed recommended practice’ that technically and economically more practicable and environmentally acceptable for handling drilling wastes. By applying this method, a high cost of treatment may be reduced. Until now, the negotiation is still undergoing. The paper describes the Indonesian Oil and Gas Industry contributions in revising the Government Regulations to be applicable in industry. The proposed revision includes the categorization of hazardous and toxic waste by issuing recommended practices for drilling wastes handling.

The six members of the Gulf Co-operation Countries (GCC)—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates—are facing enormous environmental challenges associated with rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, especially in the last three decades, due to its role as a global hydrocarbon energy centre. None of these countries have systematic and specialised academic programmes with the sole purpose of Environmental Engineering Education (E3). The current status of E3 in the universities across the region is surveyed and thus the individual and collective higher education policies towards environmental affairs are highlighted. The E3 policies of the regional universities are then compared to the benchmark status of the European and the US universities. The ABET criteria are used to evaluate non-E3 programs. The survey shows that the environmental engineering subjects were mostly taught under the umbrella of civil or chemical engineering departments in the GCC countries. An educational scheme for E3 in the GCC higher education institutes is proposed that is based on the evolution of E3 approach in the Western universities.

The management of toxic and hazardous waste (B3) is a crucial aspect of environmental management. Solid medical B3 waste is the residue from activities or businesses containing hazardous or toxic materials that can pollute or damage the environment, either directly or indirectly. The research aims to evaluate the technical operations of solid medical hazardous waste management at Sultan Suriansyah Hospital and Suaka Insan Hospital, Banjarmasin. The research was conducted at Sultan Suriansyah Hospital and Suaka Insan Hospital in Banjarmasin City. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 15 medical personnel and 4 environmental health officers from Suriansyah Hospital, and 14 medical personnel and 3 environmental health officers from Suaka Insan Hospital. Data were analyzed using a Likert scale to assess the operational techniques of solid medical B3 waste management, including reduction and sorting, containerization, packaging, labeling, storage, and transportation, based on questionnaire responses. The technical and operational evaluation of solid medical hazardous waste management at Sultan Suriansyah Hospital and Suaka Insan Hospital Banjarmasin, namely at Sultan Suriansyah Hospital, showed that the implementation of management was still in the less appropriate category, with a total score of 65.26%, while the technical and operational evaluation of solid medical hazardous waste management at Suaka Insan Hospital, showed that the implementation of management was still in the appropriate category, with a total score of 73.33%.

Hazardous and toxic waste (LB3) is one of the environmental impacts that must be managed in the Republic of Indonesia in accordance with Indonesian Law No. 32 / 2009 on the Protection and Environmental Management Article 58. B3 is the residue of a business and / or activities that contain hazardous and toxic. Hazardous and Toxic waste generated shall be reduced in accordance with Article 10 of Indonesian Regulation No. 101 / 2014 on the Management of Hazardous and Toxic Waste. One sector that has a real contribution in donating B3 waste generation is the energy sector. PT Pertamina, which is engaged in the energy sector undertake efforts to reduce hazardous waste generation on the activities of pumping the fuel at the Balongan Fuel Terminal. The case studies conducted in Balongan. Starter activities that were previously used accumulator pose as hazardous waste to be modified. Reduced waste generation by Fuel Terminal Balongan by modifying the diesel engine starter system method with compressed air.

This research evaluates management of hazardous and toxic waste (HTW) by Company X, a pharmaceutical company in Bandung, Indonesia. An assessment system was used to measure and evaluate the waste management practices of relevant institutions. The research methodology integrates a checklist approach with a scoring method based on the Guttman Scale, focusing on three criteria: waste packaging, waste storage, and waste transportation. The assessment revealed, the company was responsible for packaging, storing, and transporting waste, while processing was outsourced to a third party. According to the evaluations, the overall waste management received an excellent rating in compliance with Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 and Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 6 of 2021. Specifically, waste packaging achieved a compliance score of 83.3%, waste storage 94.4%, and waste transportation 100%. The overall average compliance score is 93%, indicating that the institution is highly effective in managing HTW.

Hospitals and health care facilities generate increasing amounts of solid medical waste each year. Improper treatment of this waste poses a potential risk for disease transmission. The Ministry of Health Regulation No. 7 of 2019 classifies hospital waste as hazardous and toxic medical waste and regulates its management procedures accordingly. This study aims to analyze the management of hazardous and toxic solid medical waste at Purworejo Hospital, focusing on the stages of reduction, segregation, storage, transportation, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and document reviews. The interviews involved both key informants and triangulation informants. The results revealed that the management of hazardous and toxic solid medical waste at Purworejo Hospital achieved a compliance rate of 74.58% categorized as “appropriate” and 25.442% categorized as “not yet appropriate.” This compliance rate remains below the required standard as stipulated in the Ministry of Health Regulation No. 7 of 2019. Non-compliance was identified in several aspects, including the absence of a designated pathway and special trolley for waste transportation, the lack of hepatitis and tetanus immunization for staff, and inconsistencies in the use of PPE.
