Abstract

This paper presents an innovative approach for a black start procedure following a blackout event considering a solid-state transformer with a coupled storage system. The solid-state transformer has been highlighted as a promising solution to enhance power management and power quality in distribution grids. Under a three-stage configuration (AC/DC-DC/DC-DC/AC), the solid-state transformer can replace the traditional low-frequency transformer in MV/LV substations. With storage coupled to the DC link of the solid-state transformer, it can be envisioned as the main black start unit (grid-forming unit), which enables to launch of a service restoration process in the distribution grid. The proposed black start procedure for the distribution grid with a solid-state transformer is demonstrated through a set of dynamic simulations performed in MATLAB/Simulink.
