Exploring interoperability assessment for Future Internet Architectures roll out

The project is about to implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology in Railways. Goal is to constitute a secure IoT system by using Information Centric Networking (ICN) architecture to comprehend the key requirements of IoT system. The proposed system is based on ICN architecture. ICN is the architecture which supports multicast, mobility and security. Mobility is the necessity here in the proposed IoT system in railways. System contains passenger information which should remain secure. Hence, ICN architecture is used as a base for IoT system in railways. The Internet of Things (IoT) based system is for catering passengers' services and requests in long journey railways. The system is to collect requests from passengers from each coach, track the location of crew members within train and allocate them requests from passengers. This allocation of the requests to the crew members takes place depending on the service arrival time, location information and workload factor of crew member. As proposed project is based on ICN architecture, it will use secure device discovery concept to make system more secure.

Information Centric Networks (ICN) has emerged as a new Internet paradigm where the users are being provided seamless access to contents rather than the host as in classical approach. For ICN realization, the current Internet requires architectural changes. These changes must be incorporated such that existing applications continue running without any difficulties. In this paper, we introduce a novel ICN architecture, called Overlay Information Centric Networks (O-ICN), which separates the data plane from the control plane activities of the network. Unlike the usual ICN architectures, in our approach naming and routing (control plane) functionalities have been segregated from the caching (data plane) functionality at each ICN router. We introduce a new module called an ICN Manager which is an extended version of Domain Name System (DNS) server and performs name resolution along with routing functionalities for ICN type of requests as well as the normal DNS resolution for non-ICN type of requests. The O-ICN architecture can be deployed incrementally over the current Internet and can operate both as ICN and non-ICN/legacy network simultaneously. This can also be implemented both in Software Defined Networks (SDN) as well as non-SDN networks without much modifications. The proposed architecture provides benefits in terms of simplification of network management, vendor independent solution, better use of network resources in terms of bandwidth and delay, and reduction of deployment/operational cost of the network.

The Internet Protocol (IP) architecture could not fully satisfy Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) needed efficiency due to their dynamic topology and high mobility. This paper presents a technique to update the software of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in vehicles using Information Centric Network (ICN) architecture. The proposed technique replaces Flashing Over The Air (FOTA) using IP with FOTA using ICN. The importance of FOTA is illustrated as well as the impact of applying the ICN architecture on VANETs. Through our experiments, we compare between the known FOTA over IP and the newly introduced FOTA technique over ICN.KeywordsFlashing Over The Air (FOTA)Information Centric Networking (ICN)ndnSIMVehicle software updateVehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs).

One of the main research directions along which the future Internet is evolving can be identified in the paradigmatic shift from a network of hosts toward a network of caches. Yet, several questions remain concerning the scalability of individual algorithms (e.g., name based lookup and routing) and components (e.g., caches) of these novel Information Centric Networking (ICN) architectures. Exploiting a peculiar characteristics of ICN (i.e., the fact that contents are split in chunks), and the nature of video streaming (which dominates Internet traffic), this paper proposes a novel two-layers caching scheme that allows multi-Terabyte caches to sustain content streaming at multi-Gbps speed. We model the system as an extension, to the case of chunked contents, of the well known Che approximation, that has the advantage of being very simple and accurate at the same time. Simulations under synthetic and realistic trace-driven traffic confirm the accuracy of the analysis and the feasibility of the proposed architecture.

Welcome to the first ACM Information Centric Networking (ICN) conference! After a successful series of ACM SIGCOMM ICN and IEEE INFOCOM NOMEN workshops showing a growing interest from the broader networking community, we initiated this new series of ACM conferences starting in 2014 and are very happy to welcome you to the first ACM ICN conference in Paris. Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come (Victor Hugo) and ICN with its concepts of providing access to named data as a first-order network service, of providing object- instead of connection-based security, and of enabling ubiquitous data replication and requestor anonymity is one of those ideas. Efforts in different international research projects have explored ICN benefits for different application areas such as mobile communications, video streaming and distribution, Internet of Things, and data-center communications. ICN is recognized as a major networking research area that relates to established networking research topics such as naming, network security, transport mechanisms, and caching, and has fueled relevant new research work in all of those areas. Starting a new conference series is always associated with challenges. We are particularly happy to report that ICN14 attracted 97 paper submissions, out of which the TPC selected 17 papers for oral presentation and 8 short papers for poster presentations. We are also delighted by the number of received demo proposals and accepted 10 demonstrations for the program. As the first conference in this new series, the program also includes a full day of tutorials to make the audience familiar with the fundamental concepts as well as the frontier of efforts in this new area. The program is completed by an industrial panel discussion with renowned experts from the networking community. We hope that ICN14 will contribute to further advancing the state of the art in networking in general and in ICN in particular.

The contributions of this paper are twofold. Firstly, we analyze the decision making problem of caching contents by the network players of Information Centric Networking (ICN) from a game theoretic perspective. We also mention a possible content distribution model for ICN. By our proposed game theory, different network players can find the optimality taking into consideration which benefits them with optimum revenue. Secondly, we present a solution for Live Streaming Media broadcast in ICN and analyze the economic part with a decision tree. We believe, our paper clearly shows the economic incentives for major network players which can stand as a motivation to achieve the faster accommodation of ICN architecture. Besides, we identify some standardization issue in ICN architecture and we emphasize on the need for a common standard for content routers (CR) so that as a node in the ICN, CR ensure scalable content delivery as well as its functionalities match with the Internet open standard philosophy.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a prominent topic in current networking research. ICN design significantly considers the increased demand of scalable and efficient content distribution for Future Internet. However, intermittently connected mobile environments or disruptive networks present a significant challenge to ICN deployment. In this context, delay tolerant networking (DTN) architecture is an initiative that effectively deals with network disruptions. Among all ICN proposals, Content Centric Networking (CCN) is gaining more and more interest for its architectural design, but still has the limitation in highly disruptive environment. In this paper, we design a protocol stack referred as CCNDTN which integrates DTN architecture in the native CCN to deal with network disruption. We also present the implementation details of the proposed CCNDTN. We extend CCN routing strategies by integrating Bundle protocol of DTN architecture. The integration of CCN and DTN enriches the connectivity options of CCN architecture in fragmented networks. Furthermore, CCNDTN can be beneficial through the simultaneous use of all available connectivities and opportunistic networking of DTN for the dissemination of larger data items. This paper also highlights the potential use cases of CCNDTN architecture and crucial questions about integrating CCN and DTN.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a novel paradigm for future Internet architectures. It exploits the current trend in Internet usage which mostly involves information dissemination. ICN architectures based on the publish/subscribe model use names for information in order to route requests and data, as well as to facilitate in-network caching, anycasting and multicasting for efficient content delivery. However, the numberof named information objects is expected to be huge in the future Internet, raising serious concerns with respect to a global-scale deployment of ICN. Routing and forwarding will require vast amounts of state, which pushes storage, maintenance and processing demands to the limit. In this paper we discuss the feasibility of deploying the Data Oriented Networking Architecture (DONA) by leveraging cloud computing facilities. We identify the exact scalability concerns for DONA based on simulations over a realistic model of the current Internet topology and find thatregistrations for information objects lead to a state explosion. For this reason, we then discuss how cloud facilities can assist DONA deployment, focusing on various options for deploying DONA in the cloud and their suitability for different areas of the inter-network.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is the network of medical devices, hardware infrastructure, and software applications used to connect the healthcare information technology. Massive traffic growth and user expectations cause challenges in the current exhausting models of IoMT data. To reduce the IoMT traffic, Information Centric Network (ICN) is a suitable technique. ICN uses persistent naming multicast communication that reduces the response time. ICN in IoMT provides a promising feature to reduce the overhead due to the distribution of commonly accessed contents. Some parameters such as energy consumption, communication cost, etc., influence the performance of sensors in the IoMT network. Excessive and unbalanced energy consumption degrades the network performance and lifetime. This article presents a framework called Dynamic Cache Scheme (DCS) that implements energy-efficient cache scheduling in IoMT over ICN to reduce network traffic. The proposed framework establishes a balance between the multi-hop traffic and data item freshness. The technique improves the freshness of data; thus, updated data are provided to the end-users via the effective utilization of caching in IoMT. The proposed framework is tested on important parameters, i.e., cache-hit-ratio, stretch, and content retrieval latency. The results obtained are compared with the state-of-the-art models. Results’ analysis shows that the proposed framework outperforms the compared models in terms of cache-hit-ratio, stretch, and content retrieval latency by 59.42%, 32.66%, and 18.8%, respectively. In the future, it is intended to explore the applicability of DCS in more scenarios and optimize further.

Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly deployed in different domains and environments including smart homes, smart cities, healthcare, industry 4.0, and smart agriculture, by connecting a large number of physical objects to deliver a new class of applications. The rising number of these connected objects and their heterogeneity have raised new research directions and challenges regarding their communications, scalability and the large amount of data that generate. As a result, new communication technologies have been proposed to be applied in these environments and applications, mainly to consider their main inherent properties which are the information that generate and handle, and the content that disseminate. Among the adopted techniques and recently integrated into the IoT is the ICN (Information Centric Networking) paradigm. The choice of integration of ICN in the context of IoT is mainly motivated by all the advantages it represents, in particular content caching and decoupling senders and receivers. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the motivations behind using ICN in IoT environments and a survey of existing research work that have already applied ICN as a communication support for IoT applications.

The growing demand for video streaming is straining the Internet, and mandating a fundamental change in future networking paradigms. Current advancements in Information-centric Networks (ICN) promise a novel approach to intrinsically handling content dissemination, caching and retrieval. While streaming technologies are converging towards Dynamic Adaptive Streaming (DAS), in-network caching in ICN facilitates serving users with better video qualities, potentially beyond their actual bandwidth-mandated throughput. In this paper, we propose an assessment framework for adaptive video streaming to evaluate the performance of ICN caching schemes, and measure their impact on improving users' streaming experience. We present a thorough study of core performance metrics and adopt those metrics which are designed for video caching. We conduct experiments on a NS-3 based simulator, ndnSIM, and propose insights which will aid the development of future caching schemes that cater to inevitable bitrate variations.

Information Centric Networking (ICN) has been proposed as an encouraging remedy for solving complications of traditional IP based architecture. In this work, we present the design and implementation of an ICN framework in Contiki NG OS, a prominent operating system (OS) for constrained IoT devices that have limited computing and communication capabilities. Elementary end-to-end communication paradigms of Named Data Networking (NDN), inspired from ICN concepts and proposed as one of Future Internet Architectures (FIA), is integrated to Contiki NG OS developed for low-power and constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Our results demonstrate the expediency of using the NDN concept for constrained IoT devices in Contiki NG OS.

Information-Centric Network (ICN) is a new architecture for Internet that focuses on shifting the current Internet’s host-oriented approach to content-oriented one. This chapter provides an overview of ICN. This also covers Internet architecture in its present form and its limitations. The chapter also covers Content Distribution Network (CDN) in brief, which aims at providing better services to the end users of Internet through replication of contents, and using surrogate servers. ICN aims at transforming from host-centric architecture to content-centric architecture of Internet in order to meet the demands of current Internet users and Internet usage patterns, which are more focused at accessing a tremendous volume of data rather than having the knowledge of the physical location of data under consideration. This chapter highlights the benefits of using ICN along with other relevant topics such as characteristics and challenges involved in the design of ICN. The chapter ends with a historic note on ICN.

Information-centric networking (ICN) is a content-oriented network that uses content instead of traditional IP addresses, it facilitates the content retrieval and calculates downstream paths without the need of an optimal topology. ICN inherits mobility support features in its baseline design. Since the Internet of Things (IoT) faces major problems in supporting mobility management over IP, we believe that ICN would represent a major element in scalable IoT networks. This article discusses the use of ICN as a communication model in IoT environments, focusing on solving the mobility issue. Thus, we survey the relevant work that studies the merger between ICN and IoT, and describe the emergence, evolution, and state-of-the-art mobility approach. This article also presents discussions on major scalability challenges when using ICN as a communication enabler for mobile IoT and highlights key designs and guidelines.
