Exploring interoperability assessment for Future Internet Architectures roll out

The project is about to implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology in Railways. Goal is to constitute a secure IoT system by using Information Centric Networking (ICN) architecture to comprehend the key requirements of IoT system. The proposed system is based on ICN architecture. ICN is the architecture which supports multicast, mobility and security. Mobility is the necessity here in the proposed IoT system in railways. System contains passenger information which should remain secure. Hence, ICN architecture is used as a base for IoT system in railways. The Internet of Things (IoT) based system is for catering passengers' services and requests in long journey railways. The system is to collect requests from passengers from each coach, track the location of crew members within train and allocate them requests from passengers. This allocation of the requests to the crew members takes place depending on the service arrival time, location information and workload factor of crew member. As proposed project is based on ICN architecture, it will use secure device discovery concept to make system more secure.

Information Centric Networking (ICN) is future Internet architecture for distribution of the contents which are location independent and are cached in the ICN nodes, making them efficient for distribution and retrieval. ICN architecture is based on new protocols for unique naming and transferring of data objects over the network. Its focus is on delivery of data objects to the end user rather than communication between client and host. In this paper we have compared different proposed ICN architectures, network caching and challenges of ICN.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) are both new evolving network architectures that are receiving a lot of attention from researchers. ICN is a Future Internet architecture which tries to transform the current Internet architecture from location- and host-centric to content-centric, where obtaining requested data is achieved by the contents’ names regardless of the location of the data. From another angle, SDN is considered a new Internet architecture that moves the control plane management from network devices to a centralized controller. The SDN controller enhances network robustness and improves its scalability, reliability, and flexibility. The integration of ICN and SDN results in massive benefits, where SDN enhances ICN networks’ manageability, controllability, and functionality, and ICN reshapes the SDN design to make it compatible with ICN features and to enhance ICN in terms of network caching, routing, mobility, and security.. In this review paper, a comprehensive survey of the issues and challenges of integrating ICN and SDN is presented. Firstly, ICN’s main characteristics are summarized, and a short comparison between different ICN architectures is completed. Then, the key details of SDN are highlighted. Moreover, the motivation and benefits of merging ICN with SDN are summarized and the state-of-the-art work on merging ICN and SDN is reviewed and classified from several aspects. Finally, several open research issues are highlighted.

Information Centric Networks (ICN) has emerged as a new Internet paradigm where the users are being provided seamless access to contents rather than the host as in classical approach. For ICN realization, the current Internet requires architectural changes. These changes must be incorporated such that existing applications continue running without any difficulties. In this paper, we introduce a novel ICN architecture, called Overlay Information Centric Networks (O-ICN), which separates the data plane from the control plane activities of the network. Unlike the usual ICN architectures, in our approach naming and routing (control plane) functionalities have been segregated from the caching (data plane) functionality at each ICN router. We introduce a new module called an ICN Manager which is an extended version of Domain Name System (DNS) server and performs name resolution along with routing functionalities for ICN type of requests as well as the normal DNS resolution for non-ICN type of requests. The O-ICN architecture can be deployed incrementally over the current Internet and can operate both as ICN and non-ICN/legacy network simultaneously. This can also be implemented both in Software Defined Networks (SDN) as well as non-SDN networks without much modifications. The proposed architecture provides benefits in terms of simplification of network management, vendor independent solution, better use of network resources in terms of bandwidth and delay, and reduction of deployment/operational cost of the network.

The information centric networks (ICN) can be viewed as a network of caches. Conversely, ICN type of cache networks has distinctive features e.g, contents popularity, usability time of content and other factors inflicts some diverse requirements for cache eviction policies. In this paper we defined four important characteristics of a suitable eviction policy for ICN. We analysed well known eviction policies in view of defined characteristics. Based upon analysis we propose a new eviction scheme which is well suitable for ICN type of cache networks.

It is a paradigm shift in internet architecture from receiver centric model to the information centric networking (ICN) model to improve the end-users' latency experience. With exponential increment in number of users and data volume, efficient usage of the nodes (caches) and content forwarding methodology are key issues in an ICN architecture. In ICN intra-domain routers have storage capacity and they can act as temporary content provider, therefore it reduces average hop count and correspondingly average delay for content download. In this article, we formulate the content management issues in a cache having finite storage capability and propose an efficient content management policy that metamorphoses a node to a self-sustained cache. We address how content packets are stored in buffer of the cache before processing and how they suffer from several finite propagation delays during the processing in a cache. We simulate our proposition with deploying real-life network environment and calculate user experience metrics like average latency, throughput and good-put. From simulation results we observe that our proposed model outperforms the existing state-of-the-art on-path caching policies.

In recent years, information-centric network (ICN) has attracted significant attention from both academia and industry. ICN is characterized by name-based routing, in-network caching and many other advanced network layer techniques. To get the benefit from these new network layer techniques, the network requires severe changes. However, considering the difficulty of deploying a new service on the existing network and the requirement of deploying multiple ICN architectures on the same physical network, the programmability and virtualization of the network is required. The programmability and virtualization techniques can be classified as software-based and hardware-based. The former is represented by software-defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). The latter is headed by NetFPGA. In this paper, we argue, to fully support ICN functionality, we need a unified deployment framework which can provide both software-based and hardware-based programmability and virtualization.

Information-Centric Networking is (ICN) gaining increasingly concerns, as an important direction of the future Internet architecture research. To study the impacts of various cache policies on overall performance of ICN network, we formulate the in- network caching problem of ICN into Mixed-Integer Linear Programming problem. Furthermore, we infer that frequency-based cache policies like LFU are supposed to perform well by analyzing the properties of optimal cache assignment, which is corroborated by our simulation results. We attempt to explore the impact of the distance between cache and the original content on cache policy performance by posing a novel cache policy named LB (Least Benefit), which takes into account the distance factor besides frequency. Through extensive simulations under various scenarios and configurations, we find that the performance gain brought by LB is limited in comparison to that of LFU, which implies that more sophisticated cache policies involving the distance factor should be considered to improve LFU. Our simulation results also show that, under a reasonable setting of cache size and request pattern, the average hops to get content can be reduced significantly by nearly 50% in comparison to that of the scenario without in- network caching.

The Internet Protocol (IP) architecture could not fully satisfy Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) needed efficiency due to their dynamic topology and high mobility. This paper presents a technique to update the software of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in vehicles using Information Centric Network (ICN) architecture. The proposed technique replaces Flashing Over The Air (FOTA) using IP with FOTA using ICN. The importance of FOTA is illustrated as well as the impact of applying the ICN architecture on VANETs. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a prominent topic in current networking research. ICN design significantly considers the increased demand of scalable and efficient content distribution for Future Internet. However, intermittently connected mobile environments or disruptive networks present a significant challenge to ICN deployment. In this context, delay tolerant networking (DTN) architecture is an initiative that effectively deals with network disruptions. Among all ICN proposals, Content Centric Networking (CCN) is gaining more and more interest for its architectural design, but still has the limitation in highly disruptive environment. In this paper, we design a protocol stack referred as CCNDTN which integrates DTN architecture in the native CCN to deal with network disruption. We also present the implementation details of the proposed CCNDTN. We extend CCN routing strategies by integrating Bundle protocol of DTN architecture. The integration of CCN and DTN enriches the connectivity options of CCN architecture in fragmented networks. Furthermore, CCNDTN can be beneficial through the simultaneous use of all available connectivities and opportunistic networking of DTN for the dissemination of larger data items. This paper also highlights the potential use cases of CCNDTN architecture and crucial questions about integrating CCN and DTN.

Welcome to the first ACM Information Centric Networking (ICN) conference! After a successful series of ACM SIGCOMM ICN and IEEE INFOCOM NOMEN workshops showing a growing interest from the broader networking community, we initiated this new series of ACM conferences starting in 2014 and are very happy to welcome you to the first ACM ICN conference in Paris. Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come (Victor Hugo) and ICN with its concepts of providing access to named data as a first-order network service, of providing object- instead of connection-based security, and of enabling ubiquitous data replication and requestor anonymity is one of those ideas. Efforts in different international research projects have explored ICN benefits for different application areas such as mobile communications, video streaming and distribution, Internet of Things, and data-center communications. ICN is recognized as a major networking research area that relates to established networking research topics such as naming, network security, transport mechanisms, and caching, and has fueled relevant new research work in all of those areas. Starting a new conference series is always associated with challenges. We are particularly happy to report that ICN14 attracted 97 paper submissions, out of which the TPC selected 17 papers for oral presentation and 8 short papers for poster presentations. We are also delighted by the number of received demo proposals and accepted 10 demonstrations for the program. As the first conference in this new series, the program also includes a full day of tutorials to make the audience familiar with the fundamental concepts as well as the frontier of efforts in this new area. The program is completed by an industrial panel discussion with renowned experts from the networking community. We hope that ICN14 will contribute to further advancing the state of the art in networking in general and in ICN in particular.

Caching in information centric networking: A survey

Home network (HOMENET) performs multiple important functions such as energy management, multimedia sharing, lighting and climate control in smart grid (SG). In HOMENET there are numerous challenges among which mobility and security are the basic requirements that need to be addressed with priority. The information-centric networking (ICN) is regarded as the future Internet that subscribes data in a content-centric manner irrespective of its location. Furthermore, it has pecial merit in mobility and security since ICN supports in-network caching and self-contained security, these make ICN a potential solution for home communication fabric. This paper aims to apply the ICN approach on HOMENET system, which we called ICN-HOMENET. Then, a proof-of-concept evaluation is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed ICN-HOMENET approach in data security, device mobility and efficient content distribution for developing HOMENET system in SG. In addition, we proposed a cost-efficient residential energy management (REM) scheme called ICN-REM scheme for ICN-HOMENET system which encourages consumers to shift the start time of appliances from peak hours to off-peak hours to reduce the energy bills. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to propose an ICN-based REM scheme for HOMENET system. In this proposal, we not only consider the conflicting requests from appliances and domestic power generation, but also think the energy management unit (EMU) should cooperate with measurement sensors to control some specific appliances in some specific conditions. Moreover, the corresponding performance evaluation validates its correctness and effectiveness.
