Wind power intermittency represents one of the major challenges facing the future growth of grid-connected wind energy projects. The integration of wind turbines and energy storage systems (ESS) provides a viable approach to mitigate the unfavorable impact on grid stability and power quality. In this study, an economic model predictive control (MPC) framework is presented for an integrated wind turbine and flywheel energy storage system (FESS). The control objective is to smooth wind power output and mitigate tower fatigue load. The optimal control problem within the model predictive control framework has been formulated as a convex optimal control problem with linear dynamics and convex constraints that can be solved globally. The performance of the proposed control algorithm is compared to that of a baseline wind turbine controller. The effect of the proposed control actions on the fatigue loads acting on the tower and blades is investigated. The simulation results, with various wind scenarios, showed the ability of the proposed control algorithm to achieve the aforementioned objectives in terms of smoothing output power and mitigating tower fatigue load with negligible effect on the wind energy harvested.

Economic model predictive control for demand flexibility of a residential building

A novel topology-aware model predictive control (MPC) framework is presented for navigating off-road wheeled vehicles with extreme mobility on 3-D terrains. Prior studies have oversimplified the problem by either treating it solely as a path-planning problem or disregarding the terrain topology. To bridge this gap, this article presents a one-layer model predictive planning and control framework that considers terrain topology for off-road vehicles at operationally relevant speeds. The algorithm is tested in various simulated scenarios with comparisons to benchmarks. The proposed algorithm demonstrates superior performance by capturing the dynamic constraints, while the benchmarks either fail to complete tasks or exhibit inferior performance due to inaccurate representation of the dynamic limitations of the vehicle. Furthermore, the algorithm is tested for robustness to demonstrate its ability to handle uncertainties in terrain topology.

In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) framework for building energy system setpoint optimization is developed and tested. The performance of the MPC framework is presented in comparison to a baseline case, where a fixed setpoint schedule is used. To simulate the MPC procedure, an EnergyPlus building model is used to represent the actual building that the optimal setpoints are applied to, and a Gaussian process (GP) regression meta-model is used in the MPC procedure that generates the optimal setpoints. The performance outputs that are used for evaluation are total heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy usage and the Fanger predicted mean vote (PMV) thermal comfort measure. The inputs for the GP regression meta-models are selected to be representative of data points that could be obtained by modern supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems to support data-driven building models. The supervisory MPC framework is capable of reducing the total energy usage with minor adjustments in thermal comfort.

This work investigates the event‐driven model predictive control problem for perturbed nonlinear systems with input and state constraints. Firstly, a new event‐driven triggering condition, considering the gradient and accumulation of the error between the optimal and actual states at adjacent moments with a state‐dependent relative threshold is designed with a guaranteed positive inter‐event time to avoid Zeno behaviour. Secondly, an error gradient and accumulation type event‐driven model predictive control framework is designed based on the new triggering condition and the dual‐mode strategy, for effectively reducing the calculation and communication burden of the model predictive control controller while ensuring desired control performance. Furthermore, the feasibility and the input‐to‐state practical stability (ISpS) of gradient and accumulation‐type event‐driven model predictive control are rigorously guaranteed theoretically. At last, the simulation results are provided to validate the this algorithm.

A dynamic model of the process is the basic requirement for the design of predictive controllers, and the model is first identified using plant input and output data. Using the process model, predictor matrices are constructed (for example, the dynamic matrix constructed using step response coefficients in DMC [1, 2]), as discussed in Chapter 6. The predictor matrices are used to obtain multistep ahead predictions of the process output(s) and used in the controller design. However these predictor matrices can be directly obtained from the input/output data using subspace matrices, which eliminates the intermediate step of parametric process model identification, providing a means for designing a predictive controller in the generalized predictive controller (GPC) framework (e.g. [16]) or the model predictive control framework, without first identifying a parametric model.

A supervisory control system using Model Predictive Control (MPC) has been designed to evaluate the efficiency of wind and solar power and is consistent with the cost function in the supervisory MPC optimization problem. A two-layer Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) framework has been developed and has improved results such as cost reductions compared to recent advanced methods. A speed Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) scheme intended for wind energy conversion systems was developed last year, with simulation results indicating superior performance over previous models. A Hierarchical Distributed Model Predictive Control (HDMPC) can work under different weather conditions with improved economic performance and keep a good balance between power delivery and load demand. An energy management system (EMS), built on the basis of MPC, can be quite lucrative for the sphere in the present climate scenario, with the selection and testing of suitable algorithms, controlled processes, cost functions, and a set of constraints as well as with proper optimizations carried out. Previous research indicates that an MPC-based EMS has the potential to be a good solution to manage energy well and also introduced it to the world experimentally. The key intention of this research study is to explore the existing advances that have been introduced and to analyze their performance in terms of cost function, different sets of constraints, variant conversion processes, and scalability to achieve more optimized operation of MPC-based EMS.

A novel machine learning-based model predictive control framework for improving the energy efficiency of air-conditioning systems

Buildings account for about 41% of primary energy consumption and 75% of the electricity. Space heating, space cooling, and ventilation are the dominant end uses, accounting for 41% of all energy consumed in the buildings sector. Growing interest in sustainability has resulted in research efforts to reduce energy consumption while providing adequate comfort to users. In this work, we present a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework for optimal HVAC control that minimizes energy consumption while staying within the comfort bounds of the occupants. The novelty of our approach lies in the use of prediction occupancy models derived from data traces and incorporating those models within the MPC framework. We use a Blended Markov Chain (BMC) occupancy prediction model in order to predict thermal load and occupancy of each zone in the building. We test our approach in simulation and compare it with occupancy schedules and control rules currently use in our university buildings. Our preliminary results show that 15.5% savings in cooling in the summer, and 9.4% savings in heating in the winter are achievable when conditioning the building using our MPC/BMC control framework.

This paper develops a model predictive multi-objective control framework based on an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system to solve the energy allocation and battery state of charge (SOC) maintenance problems of hybrid electric vehicles in the car-following scenario. The proposed control framework is composed of a car-following layer and an energy allocation layer. In the car-following layer, a multi-objective problem is solved to maintain safety and comfort, and the generated speed sequence in the prediction time domain is put forward to the energy allocation layer. In the energy allocation layer, an adaptive equivalent-factor-based consumption minimization strategy with the predicted velocity sequences is adopted to improve the engine efficiency and fuel economy. The equivalent factor reflects the extent of SOC variation, which is used to maintain the battery SOC level when optimizing the energy. The proposed controller is evaluated in the New York City Cycle (NYCC) driving cycle and the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) driving cycle, and the comparison results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

2D MODEL PREDICTIVE ITERATIVE LEARNING CONTROL SCHEMES FOR BATCH PROCESSES

Optimizing pump operations is a challenging task for real-time management of water distribution systems (WDSs). With suitable pump scheduling, pumping costs can be significantly reduced. In this research, a novel economic model predictive control (EMPC) framework for real-time management of WDSs is proposed. Optimal pump operations are selected based on predicted system behavior over a receding time horizon with the aim to minimize the total pumping energy cost. Time-varying electricity tariffs are considered while all the required water demands are satisfied. The novelty of this framework is to choose the number of pumps to operate in each pump station as decision variables in order to optimize the total pumping energy costs. By using integer programming, the proposed EMPC is applied to a benchmark case study, the Richmond Pruned network. The simulation with an EPANET hydraulic simulator is implemented. Moreover, a comparison of the results obtained using the proposed EMPC with those obtained using trigger-level control demonstrates significant economic benefits of the proposed EMPC.
