CHALLENGES IN USING BLOCKCHAIN FOR SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Nowadays, high competitive market needs fast, effective, high responsiveness, online interactive, 24 hours 7 days availability and easy to follow up order processing. Consequently, there is a need for a model in which interdisciplinary approaches for understanding the range of Supply Chain Management (SCM) Information System (IS) capabilities are provided. In this study, an integrated model of SCM IS was developed that is supported by empirical evidence specific to SCM IS implementations. The developed model integrates and enriches theories of competitive strategy, supply chain management and inter-organizational information systems. Then, a case study of an automotive manufacturing industry was conducted to demonstrate the proficiency of the proposed model. As a result, better understanding of capabilities of implemented supply chain management information systems and expected future capabilities could be identified by practitioners and decision makers. Finally, findings of this study are listed together with some future works.

The article focuses on the project to develop a supply chain management information system using a digital twin for the maritime transport chain. Digital twins reflect real objects and processes in a virtual environment, which enables analysis, modelling and optimisation of supply chain operations. The author describes the main stages of the project, including requirements definition, system architecture development, implementation and testing. Particular attention is paid to the benefits of using digital twins in supply chain management, such as increased efficiency, reduced risk and improved forecasting. The results of the study show the potential of digital twins to optimise supply chain management and increase the competitiveness of companies. The article presents an approach to building a new model of interaction and systematic optimisation of business processes based on digital technologies at all stages of supply chain formation, which ensures the creation of a digital twin for the maritime transport chain. In order to improve supply chains, a digital twin has been proposed, which opens up great prospects for the management of logistics processes and the exchange of information between supply chain participants. This paper presents a framework for an integral Digital Supply Chain Twin (DSCT) capable of covering the entire transport chain. The proposed information system based on the use of the DSCT provides a number of improvements throughout the supply chain, as well as the ability to model and evaluate different scenarios for the supply chain. This creates opportunities to reduce the cost of organising and coordinating transport, improve the quality of transport and logistics services and make them more reliable by identifying potential problems at an early stage. The article analyses the main information technologies that facilitate the use of DSCT as a useful and reliable tool.

Supply chain management information systems (SCM IS) have become vital tools for synchronizing information among the customers and suppliers of a supply chain. However, recent advances in inter-enterprise systems and e-business technologies have led to a confusing variety of SCM IS alternatives, each with varying capabilities used to determine the levels of support an SCM IS should provide to enable operational efficiency, flexibility, and planning and analysis capabilities.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the conceptual role of Information System (IS) in the effectiveness of Supply Chain Management (SCM). The development of business competition in the field of products or services is increasingly competitive. Competition for product quality is intense in the market. Since products and services are the fastest growing industries in 2018, so it is very necessary to have a good and structured IS that serves to increase the effectiveness of SCM; this will eventually have a positive impact on business performance. At present the IS is needed to increase the effectiveness of SCM. SCM information systems can standardize, monitor, capture and utilize business potential in order to improve business performance. This study adopted a conceptual approach from related theories. To obtain data, interviews of experts/operational management experts (IS & SCM) were conducted with prompts or probing methods. Moreover, secondary sources such as journals, books and magazines were also used to obtain data. The findings of the study assured the significant role of management IS in achieving effectiveness in SCM. This study concludes that the application of information systems can reduce costs in distribution both from upstream to downstream, can implement good communication and can improve the performance of a company in carrying out SCM.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) has evolved into a fundamental element of modern business strategy, extending beyond the manufacturing sector to encompass the service and retail industries. SCM involves the application of management science and practice throughout the supply chain, aimed at achieving competitive advantage amid intense industry competition. In an increasingly digitalized business landscape, SCM is no longer focused solely on the physical movement of products and financial flows. This study aims to analyze and understand the life experiences of owners and managers of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) restaurants in Pangkep Regency related to supply chain management and adopting supply chain management information systems (SCMIS). The background of the study reveals a gap between the 'Sollen' of efficient SCMIS and the 'Sein' of MSME restaurants, which still face various operational and financial challenges due to limited technology and manual processes. This study identifies the need for an in-depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities for adopting SCMIS from the subjective perspective of MSME actors. This study used a qualitative approach, descriptive phenomenological design, and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) data analysis with Saldana coding techniques supported by NVivo software; this study involved 20 informants from MSME restaurants in Pangkep Regency. The research findings present themes that emerge from the informants' experiences and are visualized in a flow relationship framework. The main contribution of this study lies in providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the dynamics of technology adoption in the context of MSME restaurants, which can be the basis for practical recommendations and the development of more relevant policies.

The paper presents possible solutions to small farmers in the agricultural sector in a small island setting grappling with challenges of enhancing their local industry and import substitution through a supply-demand chain framework. In 2005, Hawaiian farms produced approximately 363,200 kg of avocados. However, Hawaiian demand for these fruits required an additional 908,000 kg of avocados that were supplied through imports. At the same time, it is worth noting; almost 49% of locally produced avocados did not reach the market. These facts clearly suggest inefficiencies in the local avocado supply chain. Review of the literature on supply chain management suggests a sustainable avocado industry requires an integrated supply and demand chain management system. Hence, a modified conceptual model of supply-chain management called the Supply Demand Integrated Management (SDIM) model is proposed in this paper. Traditional supply chains contain three functional components: supply coordination, physical production and logistic management. In the new model, we propose adding R4D (Research for Development), a public good provided by the government to agricultural industries as an integral part of the supply-demand chain system. It articulates the significance of research and supply chain partnerships between small growers, industry groups, and public agencies. A well-integrated demand/supply chain in the avocado industry allows sharing of vital market information which can contribute to long-term strategic decisions that help local avocado growers increase their competitiveness against foreign imports. It also provides metrics in terms of consumer satisfaction, profitability, competitiveness, self-sufficiency, import substitution and sustainability. The SDIM model as applied to the avocado industry suggests two hypotheses relevant to the current situation. The hypotheses are: (1) There is a lack of coordination between what the farmers are growing and the chefs' (a high-end customer/buyer) preferences; (2) Forming an avocado farmer cooperative will enhance the profitability of local farmers. Survey data was collected from Hawaiian chefs and avocado farmers. Data was analysed using a Duncan multi-range test and a mathematical model, respectively, to test the hypotheses. The test revealed a lack of coordination between what the farmers are growing and buyer preferences. The results from the mathematical model suggested that formation of an avocado marketing cooperative would enhance the profitability of local farmers. Thus, the SDIM framework expands existing body of knowledge about supply chain management and provides useful information to local avocado growers that can help strengthen their supply and demand chain management.

Implementation and adoption of new technologies are gaining the result of smooth supply chain and logistics operations. Internet of things (IoT) artificial intelligence, including data mining, intensified in all fields of life, particularly in supply chain management and operations. Blockchain technology has the capability to reform the supply chain and logistics operations management. Blockchain provides digital database solutions for all transactions across supply chain and operations management. Radio frequency identification device (RFID) is also helping technology transmit electromagnetic waves to radio-compatible integrated circuits to look after and manage the entire supply chain and logistics operations management. The Fourth Industry Revolution 4.0 refers to the automation, interconnectivity, machine learning, and real-time data that help supply chain and logistics operations management in the 21st century.

The development of globalization has made digital technology play an important role in increasing the efficiency of supply chain management to ensure that its products are truly halal at the point of purchase for consumers. The technology that plays an active role in supply chain management is artificial intelligence (AI). This study aims to determine the effectiveness of implementing AI in halal product supply chain management. The object of this study is a scientific article that implements AI technology in halal product supply chain management with a qualitative approach through the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Literature studies were conducted using Google Scholar and Science Direct to obtain detailed and up-to-date information on the topics to be studied. This study found 12 AI models that can be used in supply chain management. However, its implementation in the field of halal supply chains has not been widely implemented. This study also found that the implementation of AI in the halal product supply chain can improve operational efficiency and improve supply chain performance. However, successful adoption depends on technological readiness, good collaboration between technology and human expertise, and consumer trust. Investing in AI-based systems can significantly improve supply chain integrity and consumer trust.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to systematically review and critically examine food losses and waste quantification in supply chain, especially in studies that tackle all the supply chain activities in a real context.Design/methodology/approachThis work employed a systematic literature review methodology on the extant literature focusing on peer-reviewed journal articles published from 2000 to 2019.FindingsA systematic analysis of 117 articles reveals that downstream supply chains are studied to a greater extent than upstream supply chains, with an emphasis on consumer waste. The findings also highlight more than half of the articles focus on only one supply chain activity. In terms of the methodologies, surveys and modelling methods are the most used to measure food losses and wastes, adopt monetary, carbon emission and calorific metrics. This study highlights that while food losses and waste research remains a relevant field of study, it has yet to been fully explored.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limit is the adoption of a systematic review method for food losses and waste quantification in supply chain.Practical implicationsThe results suggest that supply chain managers should invest in acquiring more knowledge about food losses in the global network. Upstream supply chains should be more studied and integrated with the downstream supply chains. Using combined direct and indirect methods has the potential to deal with the contradictions of quantification, the lack of data and reduce losses over time and space.Originality/valueBased on this review as the first one focusing exclusively on quantification of food losses and waste in supply chain context, the authors develop an aspiring research agenda that proposes opportunities for future research.HeadingsWe analyse 117 studies addressing food losses and waste quantification.Downstream food supply chains are more studied than upstream food supply chains.Case studies of food supply chains in developed countries are more prolific.The main metric to quantify food losses and waste is weight.

Recent advances in supply chain management information systems (SCM IS) have enabled firms to more fully collaborate with their supply chain partners — driving out costs while increasing responsiveness to market demands. This chapter examines various types of SCM IS — from traditional EDI systems to more recent Web-services-based e-business applications. It argues that the approach best suited for an organization depends in part on the degree of integration between the partners, the complexity of the business processes, and the number of partners involved. A model is presented for analyzing the costs and benefits that can be expected from each type of SCM IS. The model enables researchers and practitioners to better understand the differences among SCM IS and thus can help reduce the risks of implementing these valuable yet complex information systems.Request access from your librarian to read this chapter's full text.

This study explores how supply chain management (SCM) information system (IS) capabilities can lead to superior business performance, and what are the detailed capabilities and methods to master volatility and uncertainties in business environments. Key concepts in SC modelling have been identified for decreasing SC complexity and increasing SC agility and key methods for supply network planning and synchronisation for optimising business performance and objectives that are often contradicting at the same time. The study developed a best practice for profit-optimised SCM for companies with capital intensive and capacity constrained resources such as in the steel companies and others of the process industry. Finally, the study shows how Industry 4.0 innovations such as Cyber-Physical Systems and blockchain technology can provide new value potentials from cross-organisational network effects and increased autonomy of SC ecosystems for dealing with unforeseen events and improved prevention from system failure. Through an international business risk management lens, the widespread and catalytic implications of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic on the supply chains (SCs) of fashion multinational corporations (MNC) are analyzed to contribute to existing research on supply chain management (SCM). While a movement towards agile, networked supply chain models had been in consideration for many firms prior to the outbreak, the pandemic highlights issues inherent in supply chains that employ concentrated production. We examined the current state of fashion supply chains, risks that have arisen historically and recently, and existing risk mitigation methods. We found that while lean supply chain management is primarily favored for its cost and waste reduction advantages, the structure is limited by the lack of supply chain transparency that results as well as the increasing demand volatility observed even before the COVID-19 outbreak. Although this problem might exist in the agile supply chain, agile supply chains combat this by focusing on enhancing communication and buyer-supplier relationships to improve information exchange. However, this structure also entails an associated increase in inventory and inventory costs. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused supply and demand disruptions which have resonating effects on supply chain activities and management, indicating a need to build flexibility to mitigate epidemic and demand risks. To address this, several strategies that firms can adopt to control for such risks are outlined and key areas for further research are identified which consider parties both upstream and downstream of the fashion supply chain.

PurposeBy applying a systematic literature review, this paper aims to identify the major healthcare problem domains (i.e. target areas) for lean supply chain management (LSCM) and to provide a list of the most common techniques for implementing LSCM in healthcare. Moreover, this study intends to investigate various contingency factors that may have influenced the selection of LSCM target areas or the application of LSCM techniques by healthcare organizations.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was carried out following the method presented by Tranfield et al. (2003). Thereby, 280 peer-reviewed journal articles, published between 1995 and 2018, were selected, profiled and reviewed. In total, 75 papers were also selected for a qualitative analysis, known as meta-study, on the basis of high relevancy to the research objectives.FindingsThis work extracts, from previous research, a set of target areas for improving supply chain in healthcare by applying lean approaches. The work also unifies the language of lean thinking and supply chain in healthcare by defining metaphors in circumstances under which healthcare organizations pursue similar objectives from their supply chain management and lean programs (Schmitt, 2005). This paper also outlines a list of applications of lean for supply chain improvement in healthcare. Finally, a set of contingency factors in the field of lean supply chain in healthcare is found via the published literature.Practical implicationsThis paper provides insights for decision-makers in the healthcare industry regarding the benefits of implementing LSCM, and it identifies contingency factors affecting the implementation of LSCM principles for healthcare. Implementing LSCM can help healthcare organizations improve the following domains: internal interaction between employees, supply chain cost management, medication distribution systems, patient safety and instrument utilization.Social implicationsThe research shows potential synthesis of LSCM with the healthcare industry’s objectives, and, thus, the outcome of this research is likely to have positive influence on the quality and cost of healthcare services. The objectives of the healthcare industry are cost reduction and providing better service quality, and LSCM implementation could be an effective solution to help healthcare to achieve these objectives.Originality/valueThe prime value of this paper lies in conducting a systematic literature review using a meta-study to identify the major factors of implementing LSCM in healthcare. Only a few other studies have been published in the literature about LSCM in healthcare.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the development and teaching of graduate courses providing in‐depth experiential learning employing commercial supply chain management software. The benefits of teaching such courses are described, the challenges in offering such courses are identified, and some solutions to overcome the challenges are offered.Design/methodology/approachThe experiences of the authors in developing and teaching supply chain management courses utilizing commercial software provided a basis for discussing the benefits and challenges associated with teaching students the management of modern supply chains using commercial decision‐support software.FindingsIncorporating commercial software in university programs presents a myriad of challenges and therefore is rarely done. However, providing students with in‐depth knowledge of commercial logistics and supply chain management software improves their understanding of supply chain issues and provides a key differentiator in the marketplace. Modeling real‐world supply chains using commercial software enhances student's education by providing relevant experiential exposure to real‐world problems and decision‐support tools.Originality/valueThe observations of the authors in developing and teaching courses in supply chain management utilizing commercial software afford a unique viewpoint and roadmap for others regarding teaching supply chain management in academic environments.
