Cloud technologies - solution for secure communication and collaboration

We describe a novel approach for building a secure and fault tolerant data storage service in collaborative work environments, which uses perfect secret sharing schemes to store data. Perfect secret sharing schemes have found little use in managing generic data because of the high computation overheads incurred by such schemes. Our proposed approach uses a novel combination of XOR secret sharing and replication mechanisms, which drastically reduce the computation overheads and achieve speeds comparable to standard encryption schemes. The combination of secret sharing and replication manifests itself as an architectural framework, which has the attractive property that its dimension can be varied to exploit tradeoffs amongst different performance metrics. We evaluate the properties and performance of the proposed framework and show that the combination of perfect secret sharing and replication can be used to build efficient fault-tolerant and secure distributed data storage systems.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) and Digital Twins (DTs) currently represent the two most notable examples of cyber-physical integration enabled by modern ICT technologies, and their adoption is becoming predominant to implement and analyse complex systems in several application domains. So-called cyber DTs are increasingly being used to carry out security analysis, monitoring and testing on the virtual replicas of complex systems rather than on the physical counterparts, especially when these may not be directly feasible due to cost and other constraints. However, since physical and virtual replicas live side by side in complex ecosystems, the need for secure and trustworthy DTs arises. In this paper, we introduce a preliminary conceptual framework aimed to increase the level of security of a complex CPS by leveraging a cyber DT providing advanced anomaly detection capabilities, achieved by means of state-of-art machine learning solutions (i.e., federated learning). The framework will also address the security and trustworthiness of the cyber DT itself, by leveraging both HW and SW solutions to support a secure communication and storage of the critical data exchanged among the physical and virtual worlds. To this aim, the integration of the blockchain technology into the DT architecture will be investigated.KeywordsCyber Digital TwinSecure Digital TwinCyber-Physical SystemsBlockchainFederated learning

Data security storage technology is an important part of information management. The security of data storage is the key to user information security, system operation efficiency and economic benefits. The implementation of data security storage technology plays an important role in improving the efficiency of data management and reducing the operating costs of enterprises. Due to the data leakage caused by intentional or unintentional wrong operation, which infringes the user’s personal privacy, the traditional data storage methods face greater risks in the operation process. These disadvantages affect the use effect of the system, and even lead to system paralysis and data loss in serious cases. Distributed database has the characteristics of high degree of structure, good openness and small storage space requirements, and plays an important role in data management. In this paper, a data security storage model is studied combining the symmetric encryption algorithm, asymmetric encryption algorithm and the hash algorithm. A data security storage system is then proposed based on distributed storage while its functional composition, data transmission framework and database design are described. The proposed system in this paper is expected improve the data storage security so as to reduce the risks of information leakage.

Nanopores are powerful single-molecule tools for label-free sensing of nanoscale molecules including DNA that can be used for building designed nanostructures and performing computations. Here, DNA hard drives (DNA-HDs) are introduced based on DNA nanotechnology and nanopore sensing as a rewritable molecular memory system, allowing for storing, operating, and reading data in the changeable three-dimensional structure of DNA. Writing and erasing data are significantly improved compared to previous molecular storage systems by employing controllable attachment and removal of molecules on a long double-stranded DNA. Data reading is achieved by detecting the single molecules at the millisecond time scale using nanopores. The DNA-HD also ensures secure data storage where the data can only be read after providing the correct physical molecular keys. Our approach allows for easy-writing and easy-reading, rewritable, and secure data storage toward a promising miniature scale integration for molecular data storage and computation.

Cloud computing is Internet based technology where the users can subscribe high quality of services from data and software that resides solely in the remote servers. This provides many benefits for the users to create and store data in the remote servers thereby utilizing fewer resources in client system. However management of the data and software may not be fully trustworthy which possesses many security challenges. One of the security issues is the data storage security where frequent integrity checking of remotely stored data is carried out. RSA based storage security (RSASS) method uses public auditing of the remote data by improving existing RSA based signature generation. This public key cryptography technique is widely used for providing strong security. Using this RSASS method, the data storage correctness is assured and identification of misbehaving server with high probability is achieved. This method also supports dynamic operation on the data and tries to reduce the server computation time. The preliminary results achieved through RSASS, proposed scheme outperforms with improved security in data storage when compared with the existing methods.

Authentication of the entity is the initial step toward secure transaction over the internet. The evolution in the nature and types of attacks have forced the commerce industry to move from single factor to multi‐factor authentication technique largely employing biometric codes for human based entity. These biometric codes are unique and therefore, are synonymous to a user identity in the digital world. Hence, safeguarding the Biometric data becomes important for the user. Also, the classical authentication techniques relying on public key encryption schemes are no longer considered safe in the post quantum era. The research in this paper therefore, proposes a quantum based mutual authentication user‐server protocol which employs the principles of quantum mechanics to carry out secure exchange and storage of confidential data. The mathematical formulae validated through demonstration of properties of quantum mechanics verifies the ability of the protocol to work in compromised channel. The detailed security analysis carried out further quantifies the same and builds in confidence to adopt the quantum based mutual authentication protocol for critical user‐server data exchange.

Regulatory authorities worldwide are developing cybersecurity standards and data protection regulations related to Internet of Things (IoT) devices to protect user information. As smart IoT technologies evolve, the implementation of such regulations and standards is highly crucial for allowing the secure storage, processing, and transfer of data. Given the ongoing research and development of smart IoT technologies across various domains, we aim to investigate whether critical compliance standards are adequately addressed in existing academic research. Through an in-depth analysis utilizing topic modeling and large language model (LLM) approaches, we identified the top five researched areas and their relationship with relevant regulations. We identified that while substantial progress has been made in addressing the technical challenges associated with IoT privacy, there remains an urgent need for research that bridges these solutions with socio-technical systems and compliance. Our research emphasizes the importance of adopting privacy-by-design at the initial stages of IoT implementation. Additionally, we determined research gaps in existing studies and proposed future research directions emphasizing the development of IoT frameworks that are not only technologically robust but also align with evolving legal compliance standards.

With the rapid development of IoT in recent years, IoT is increasingly being used as an endpoint of supply chains. In general, as the majority of data is now being stored and shared over the network, information security is an important issue in terms of secure supply chain management. In response to cyber security breaches and threats, there has been much research and development on the secure storage and transfer of data over the network. However, there is a relatively limited amount of research and proposals for the security of endpoints, such as IoT linked in the supply chain network. In addition, it is difficult to ensure reliability for IoT itself due to a lack of resources such as CPU power and storage. Ensuring the reliability of IoT is essential when IoT is integrated into the supply chain. Thus, in order to secure the supply chain, we need to improve the reliability of IoT, the endpoint of the supply chain. In this work, we examine the use of IoT gateways, client certificates, and IdP as methods to compensate for the lack of IoT resources. The results of our qualitative evaluation demonstrate that using the IdP method is the most effective.

This study constructs a secure and efficient data storage and sharing architecture for the Internet of Vehicles. A practical Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus algorithm using reputation was proposed to address the shortcomings of roadside unit equipment in the architecture. The experimental results showed that in the performance verification of reinforced data storage, the storage proportion of the research scheme was always lower than that of the comparison algorithm. In the simulated 5000 transactions, it was always lower than 40 MB, while the comparison algorithm reached a maximum of 72 MB. The efficiency of querying registration information and vehicle data increased by 38.2% and 49.1%, respectively. In the shared performance verification, the fully loaded roadside unit devices decreased by a maximum of 2.8%. Under heavy load conditions, the fully loaded nodes decreased by a maximum of 20.7%. In the validation of the proposed consensus algorithm, its performance was more stable in terms of throughput, and the number of transactions processed per second by d (10) remained basically between 380 and 640. Overall, the constructed secure and efficient data storage and sharing architecture for the Internet of Vehicles is efficient and secure, which can be effectively applied in practical IoV systems.

With the fast development of industrial Internet of things (IIoT), a large amount of data is being generated continuously by different sources. Storing all the raw data in the IIoT devices locally is unwise considering that the end devices’ energy and storage spaces are strictly limited. In addition, the devices are unreliable and vulnerable to many threats because the networks may be deployed in remote and unattended areas. In this paper, we discuss the emerging challenges in the aspects of data processing, secure data storage, efficient data retrieval and dynamic data collection in IIoT. Then, we design a flexible and economical framework to solve the problems above by integrating the fog computing and cloud computing. Based on the time latency requirements, the collected data are processed and stored by the edge server or the cloud server. Specifically, all the raw data are first preprocessed by the edge server and then the time-sensitive data (e.g., control information) are used and stored locally. The non-time-sensitive data (e.g., monitored data) are transmitted to the cloud server to support data retrieval and mining in the future. A series of experiments and simulation are conducted to evaluate the performance of our scheme. The results illustrate that the proposed framework can greatly improve the efficiency and security of data storage and retrieval in IIoT.
