Consequences of Baire’s theorem

There are excellent books on both functional analysis and summability. Most of them are very terse. In Functional Analysis and Summability, the author makes a sincere attempt for a gentle introduction of these topics to students. In the functional analysis component of the book, the Hahn–Banach theorem, Banach–Steinhaus theorem (or uniform boundedness principle), the open mapping theorem, the closed graph theorem, and the Riesz representation theorem are highlighted. In the summability component of the book, the Silverman–Toeplitz theorem, Schur’s theorem, the Steinhaus theorem, and the Steinhaus-type theorems are proved. The utility of functional analytic tools like the uniform boundedness principle to prove some results in summability theory is also pointed out. Features A gentle introduction of the topics to the students is attempted. Basic results of functional analysis and summability theory and their applications are highlighted. Many examples are provided in the text. Each chapter ends with useful exercises. This book will be useful to postgraduate students, pre-research level students, and research scholars in mathematics. Students of physics and engineering will also find this book useful since topics in the book also have applications in related areas.

In this central chapter, the fundamental elements of functional analysis are presented. Although topological vector spaces are considered, essentially for the use of weak topologies, the focus is on normed spaces. Normed spaces in duality or metric duality form a convenient framework. The main pillars of functional analysis are presented: separation properties, the uniform boundedness theorem, the open mapping theorem, the closed graph theorem…Some special properties such as reflexivity, separability, and uniform convexity are given some attention. An account of spectral theory for linear operators is presented and the case of compact operators is considered. The chapter ends with a presentation of regulated functions and functions of bounded variation. This enables us to dispose of an elementary integration theory that is often sufficient for simple purposes.

The first four sections of this chapter form its core and include classical topics such as bounded linear transformations, the open mapping theorem, the closed graph theorem, the uniform boundedness principle, and the Hahn-Banach theorem. The chapter includes a good number of applications of the four fundamental theorems of functional analysis. Sections 6.5 and 6.6 provide a good account of the properties of the spectrum and adjoint operators on Banach spaces. They may be largely bypassed, since the treatment of the corresponding topics for operators on Hilbert spaces in chapter 7 is self-contained. The section on weak topologies is more advanced and may be omitted if a brief introduction is the goal. The chapter is enriched by such topics as the best polynomial approximation, the Hilbert cube, Gelfand’s theorem, Schauder bases, complemented subspaces, and the Banach-Alaoglu theorem.

The space $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ of Henstock-Kurzweil integrable functions on [a, b] is the uncountable union of Frechet spaces $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ (X). In this paper, on each Frechet space $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ (X), an F-norm is defined for a continuous linear operator. Hence, many important results in functional analysis, like the Banach-Steinhaus theorem, the open mapping theorem and the closed graph theorem, hold for the $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ (X) space. It is known that every control-convergent sequence in the $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ space always belongs to a $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ (X) space for some X. We illustrate how to apply results for Frechet spaces $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ (X) to control-convergent sequences in the $${\cal H}{\cal K}$$ space. Examples of compact linear operators are given. Existence of solutions to linear and Hammerstein integral equations is proved.

The various properties of topological spaces in the classical Baire category theorems which imply the Baire property also imply the stronger property of pseudo-completeness. In contrast to some of these properties and to the Baire property, J. C. Oxtoby has shown that pseudo-completeness is productive. The following main result places pseudo-completeness in the context of linear topological spaces: Let E and F be linear topological spaces and g be a continuous linear mapping of E into F. If E is pseudo-complete, g is almost open, and the completion of g[E] has a continuous metric, then g[E] is complete. The proof of this result uses the difference theorem, but not an open mapping theorem. The hypotheses lead to a discussion of conditions for a linear mapping to be almost open and for a linear topological space to have a continuous metric. An example shows that, although a translation invariant continuous metric on a linear topological space E extends to a translation invariant continuous pseudo-metric on the completion of E, this extension need not be a metric, even if it induces a normed topology on E. Othes examples show that a pseudo-complet e linear topological space need not be complete in its natural uniformity, and that the almost open condition of the main result may not be omitted and is not implied by the combination of the other conditions and the conclusion. Pseudo-complete topological spaces, introduced by Oxtoby [8], successfully bind together the classical Baire category theorems. They have been the subject of recent work; Aarts and Lutzer [1], for example, have shown that a metrizable space is pseudo-comple te if and only if it has a dense subspace which is topologically complete. In the context of linear topological spaces, Todd [13] shows that, under certain conditions, a linear topological space which is pseudocomplete is complete in the natural uniformity. Theorem 3.1 extends this result for the image of a pseudo-complete linear topological space under a continuous linear almost open mapping; in contrast. Example 5.5 gives pseudo-complete locally convex linear topological spaces which are not complete, and hence are not Ptak spaces. From open mapping theorems arise restrictions on continuous images of certain types of spaces. As an application of his open mapping theorem, Banach ([2], p. 38), showed that the continuous linear image of a complete metric linear space in a space of the same

Fuzzy bounded linear operators

Normed spaces are treated at length as well as techniques of Banach spaces for solving differential and integral equations. Classical results, such as the Open Mapping Theorem, the Closed Graph Theorem, the Hahn-Banach Theorem, and a few more, are given as well, establishing the core of the theory of bounded operators on Banach spaces. The chapter closes with a view towards generalizations of the theory in two directions, providing a glimpse of the theory of unbounded operators and of locally convex spaces.

On general open mapping theorems

Closed Graph Theorem and Open Mapping Theorem

A variation on the uniform boundedness theorem [2, p. 105] of functional analysis is obtained by replacing pointwise boundedness by a slightly stronger type of boundedness. This makes it possible to remove the category requirements from the set over which it is desired to have a collection of functions uniformly bounded. The concept of boundedness to be utilized is called boundedness on Cauchy sequences (see Definition 1). When a Cauchy sequence converges in the domain of a family of continuous functions, boundedness on a Cauchy sequence is equivalent to pointwise boundedness of the family at the limit point of the point of the sequence. When the domain of the continuous functions is a metric space, boundedness on the collection on all Cauchy sequences is equivalent to pointwise boundedness of the continuous extensions on the completion of the domain. The interesting case is when the domain is not metrizable because boundedness on Cauchy sequences does not necessarily imply pointwise boundedness of the extended functions on the completion or even on the sequential completion of the domain. The main result of the paper is given in Theorem 1 which is followed by six corollaries. The sixth corollary is especially interesting in stating that the closure of an infrabarrelled space in its second adjoint space is a barreled space. The theorem on uniform boundedness immediately suggests an absorption theorem which is Theorem 2 of the paper. Theorem 1 does not follow as a corollary of Theorem 2 as is the case of the classical uniform boundedness theorem [2, p. 105]. DEFINITION 1. A family H of continuous linear transformations with common domain a linear topological space E and ranges in a locally convex space F is bounded on a Cauchy sequence {Xn } in E if for every neighborhood V of the origin in F there exists a positive real number r with the property that for each f in H there is an Nf such that f (xn) is in r V for all n > Nf. The following theorem is stated in the context of the definition.

A classical result due to M. Eidelheit and B. Yood states that the standard algebra norm on the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Banach space is minimal, in the sense that the norm must be less than a multiple of any other submultiplicative norm on the same algebra. This definition does not assume that the arbitrary algebra norm is complete. In cases when the standard algebra norm is, in addition, maximal, it is therefore unique up to equivalence. More recently, M. Meyer showed that the Calkin algebras of a very restricted class of Banach spaces also have unique algebra norms. We generalise the Eidelheit-Yood method of proof, to show that the conventional quotient norm on a larger class of Calkin algebras is minimal. Since maximality of the norm is a presumed property for the class, the norm is also unique. We thus extend the result of Meyer. In particular, we establish that the Calkin algebras of canonical Banach spaces such as James’ space and Tsirelson’s space have unique algebra norms, without assuming completeness. We also prove uniqueness of norm for quotients of the algebras of operators on classical non-separable spaces, the closed ideals of which were previously studied by M. Daws. One aspect of the Eidelheit-Yood method is a dependence on the uniform boundedness principle. As a component of our generalisation, we prove an analogue of that principle which applies to Calkin algebra elements rather than bounded linear operators. In order to translate the uniform boundedness principle into this new setting, we take the perspective that non-compact operators map certain wellseparated sequences to other well-separated sequences. We analyse the limiting separation of such sequences, using these values to measure the non-compactness of operators and define the requisite notion of a bounded set of non-compact operators. In the cases when the underlying Banach space has a Schauder basis, we are able to restrict attention to seminormalised block basic sequences. As a consequence, our main uniqueness of norm result for Calkin algebras relies on the existence of bounded mappings between, and projections onto, the spans of block basic sequences in the relevant Banach spaces.

CHAPTER 23 - Banach Spaces and Topology

This chapter develops the beginnings of abstract functional analysis, a subject designed to study properties of functions by treating the functions as the members of a space and formulating the properties as properties of the space. Section 1 defines Banach spaces as complete normed linear spaces and gives a number of examples of these. The space of bounded linear operators from one normed linear space to another is a normed linear space, and it is a Banach space if the range is a Banach space. Sections 2–3 concern Hilbert spaces. These are Banach spaces whose norms are induced by inner products. Section 2 shows that closed vector subspaces of such a space have orthogonal complements, and it shows the role of orthonormal bases for such a space. Section 3 concentrates on bounded linear operators from a Hilbert space to itself and constructs the adjoint of each such operator. Sections 4–6 prove the three main abstract theorems about the norm topology of general normed linear spaces—the Hahn–Banach Theorem, the Uniform Boundedness or Banach–Steinhaus Theorem, and the Interior Mapping Principle. A number of consequences of these theorems are given. The second and third of the theorems require some hypothesis of completeness. The topic of Hilbert and Banach spaces continues in Chapter IV of the companion volume, Advanced Real Analysis.

Let E be a locally convex Hausdorff linear topological vector space, henceforth called simply a locally convex space. A Schauder basis for E is a sequence of vectors { xn } in E together with a sequence {fn } Of continuous linear functionals from E* such that fk(xj) = bk,j and for each xEE, x-Enc lfn(x)xn, convergence being in the topology of E. For each positive integer m let Sm(x) = 1f.(x)xn. We call the basis (xn; fn) equicontinuous when the partial sum operators (Sm) are equicontinuous in the given topology of E. In this note a necessary and sufficient condition for a Schauder basis to be weakly equicontinuous is given and complete locally convex spaces with weakly equicontinuous Schauder bases are characterized. A form of the latter result has been obtained in [1, p. 268]. Equicontinuous bases were introduced in [3, p. 208]. If the space E is barrelled then by the Banach-Steinhaus Theorem, any Schauder basis of E is equicontinuous. However, if E is examined in its weak topology considerably different results occur.

In reminiscence of Ptak's open mapping theorem, a topological space satisfying the open mapping theorem is called a B r space.This paper is devoted to the study of sums and products of B r spaces in the category of topological spaces.We prove that, in general, sums and products of even two B r spaces need no longer be B r .On the other hand, for any B r space E the sum E θ E is again a B r space.Moreover, since Cech complete spaces are known to be B r , we ask whether a sum E θ F is B r provided that E is Cech complete and F is B r .It turns out that, at least in the framework of complete regularity, the answer to this question is in the positive if and only if F is a Baire space.Introduction.The notion of B r spaces has first been introduced by T. Husain in the categories of locally convex vector spaces (see [HuJ) and topological groups (see [Hu 2 ]).Originally, it goes back to V. Ptak's open mapping theorem (see [Kό], p. 35 ff).A Hausdorff topological space E is called a B r space if every continuous, nearly open bijection / from E onto any Hausdorff space F is in fact open.For a survey of the classical theory of B r spaces we refer the reader to Kόthe's book [Kό], where the locally convex case is treated.The linear topological case is investigated in the lecture notes [AEK].B r groups are considered by several authors.See for instance [Hu 2 ], [Ba], [Gr], [Su].In a purely topological context, B r spaces have first been investigated by Weston in [We], although the term B r space is not used there.Translated into the B r terminology, Weston proved that every completely metrizable topological space is a B r space.His result has been generalized by Byczkowski and Pol in [BP], who proved that every Cech complete topological space is a B r space.In [No] we have further generalized this result proving that every Hausdorff, semi-regular topological space densely containing some Cech complete sub space is in fact a B r space.We just mention another generalization of Byczkowski and Pols' result into a somewhat different direction by Wilhelm (cf.[Wi]).In the present paper we examine the invariance of the class of B r spaces under topological sums and products.It turns out that, in general, the sum of even two B r spaces need not be a B r space.A counterexample is given in §2.In §1 we obtain a positive result stating that the sum E θ E
