On square roots of the Haar state on compact quantum groups
Convolution semigroups of states on a quantum group form the natural noncommutative analogue of convolution semigroups of probability measures on a locally compact group. Here we initiate a theory of weakly continuous convolution semigroups of functionals on a C*-bialgebra, the noncommutative counterpart of a locally compact semigroup. On locally compact quantum groups we obtain a bijective correspondence between such convolution semigroups and a class of C 0-semigroups of maps which we characterise. On C*-bialgebras of discrete type we show that all weakly continuous convolution semigroups of states are automatically norm-continuous. As an application we deduce a known characterisation of continuous conditionally positive-definite Hermitian functions on a compact group.

Multiplier Hopf algebras and duality
We define a category containing the discrete quantum groups (and hence the discrete groups and the duals of compact groups) and the compact quantum groups (and hence the compact groups and the duals of discrete groups). The dual of an object can be defined within the same category and we have a biduality theorem. This theory extends the duality between compact quantum groups and discrete quantum groups (and hence the one between compact abelian groups and discrete abelian groups). The objects in our category are multiplier Hopf algebras, with invertible antipode, admitting invariant functionals (integrals), satisfying some extra condition (to take care of the non-abelianness of the underlying algebras). If we start with a multiplier Hopf ∗-algebra with positive invariant functionals, then also the dual is a multiplier Hopf ∗-algebra with positive invariant functionals. This makes it possible to formulate this duality also within the framework of C∗-algebras.

This is a transcript of a series of eight lectures, 90 min each, held at IMSc Chennai, India from 5–24 January 2015. We give basic definitions, properties and examples of compact quantum groups and compact matrix quantum groups such as the existence of a Haar state, the representation theory and Woronowicz’s quantum version of the Tannaka–Krein theorem. Building on this, we define Banica–Speicher quantum groups (also called easy quantum groups), a class of compact matrix quantum groups determined by the combinatorics of set partitions. We sketch the classification of Banica–Speicher quantum groups and we list some applications. We review the state-of-the-art regarding Banica–Speicher quantum groups and we list some open problems.

We consider compact matrix quantum groups whose $N$-dimensional fundamental representation decomposes into an $(N-1)$-dimensional and a one-dimensional subrepresentation. Even if we know that the compact matrix quantum group associated to this $(N-1)$-dimensional subrepresentation is isomorphic to the given $N$-dimensional one, it is a priori not clear how the intertwiner spaces transform under this isomorphism. In the context of so-called easy and non-easy quantum groups, we are able to define a transformation of linear combinations of partitions and we explicitly describe the transformation of intertwiner spaces. As a side effect, this enables us to produce many new examples of non-easy quantum groups being isomorphic to easy quantum groups as compact quantum groups but not as compact matrix quantum groups.

Approximation by Positive Definite Functions on Compact Groups
We consider approximation methods defined by translates of a positive definite function on a compact group. A characterization of the native space generated by a positive definite function on a compact group is presented. Starting from Bochner's theorem, we construct examples of well-localized positive definite central functions on the rotation group (3). Finally, the stability of the interpolation problem and the error analysis for the given examples are studied in detail.

LetS be a uniform semigroup (this includes all topological groups and affine semigroups). We show that a certain space of uniformly continuous functions onS has a left invariant mean iffS has the fixed point property for uniformly continuous affine actions ofS on compact convex sets. This is closely related to but independent of the results of T. Mitchell in [13] and A. Lau in [10]. Interesting examples and consequences are given for the special cases of topological groups and affine convolution semigroups of probability measures on a locally compact semigroup or group.

Let G be a locally compact topological group and let be a weakly continuous one parameter convolution semigroup of probability measures on G. Suppose, that each measure is normal, i.e. commutes with the adjoint measure. Then the symmetric part is also a continuous one parameter convolution semigroup.

In this paper, we investigate the co-amenability of compact quantum groups. Combining with some properties of regular C*-norms on algebraic compact quantum groups, we show that the quantum double of co-amenable compact quantum groups is unique. Based on this, this paper proves that co-amenability is preserved under formulation of the quantum double construction of compact quantum groups, which exhibits a type of nice symmetry between the co-amenability of quantum groups and the amenability of groups.

We consider closed infinitesimal operators L with dense domain D in the algebra of all continuous functions, vanishing at infinity, on a given locally compact Hausdorff space X. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for L to be the infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous sub-Markovian semigroup on C0(X). The conditions involve: (1) commutativity with a compact group G acting continuously on X (i.e., spatial G-symmetry), (2) a tangential notion defined in terms of the G-action, and finally, (3) a dispersive estimate for L. The dispersive estimate is satisfied on a subalgebra which is a core for L, and contained in the domain D. If G is also a Lie group, we explicitly construct such a core algebra in the domain.
Read moreThe Haagerup property for locally compact quantum groups
The Haagerup property for locally compact groups is generalised to the context of locally compact quantum groups, with several equivalent characterisations in terms of the unitary representations and positive-definite functions established. In particular it is shown that a locally compact quantum group 𝔾 has the Haagerup property if and only if its mixing representations are dense in the space of all unitary representations. For discrete 𝔾 we characterise the Haagerup property by the existence of a symmetric proper conditionally negative functional on the dual quantum group 𝔾 ^ $\hat{\mathbb {G}}$ ; by the existence of a real proper cocycle on 𝔾, and further, if 𝔾 is also unimodular we show that the Haagerup property is a von Neumann property of 𝔾. This extends results of Akemann, Walter, Bekka, Cherix, Valette, and Jolissaint to the quantum setting and provides a connection to the recent work of Brannan. We use these characterisations to show that the Haagerup property is preserved under free products of discrete quantum groups.
Read moreApproximation properties for locally compact quantum groups
This is a survey of some aspects of the subject of approximation properties for locally compact quantum groups, based on lectures given at the {\it Topological Quantum Groups} Graduate School, 28 June - 11 July, 2015 in Bedlewo, Poland. We begin with a study of the dual notions of amenability and co-amenability, and then consider weakenings of these properties in the form of the Haagerup property and weak amenability. For discrete quantum groups, the interaction between these properties and various operator algebra approximation properties are investigated. We also study the connection between central approximation properties for discrete quantum groups and monoidal equivalence for their compact duals. We finish by discussing the central weak amenability and central Haagerup property for free quantum groups.

For a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ we define its center, $\mathscr{Z}(\mathbb{G})$, and its quantum group of inner automorphisms, $\mathrm{Inn}(\mathbb{G})$. We show that one obtains a natural isomorphism between $\mathrm{Inn}(\mathbb{G})$ and $\mathbb{G}/\!\mathscr{Z}(\mathbb{G})$, we characterize normal quantum subgroups of a compact quantum group as those left invariant by the action of the quantum group of inner automorphisms and discuss several examples.
Read moreOn the problem of classifying simple compact quantum groups
We review the notion of simple compact quantum groups and examples, and discuss the problem of construction and classification of simple compact quantum groups. Several new quantum groups constructed by Banica, Curran and Speicher since the author's first paper on simple quantum groups are shown to be simple using results of Raum and Weber.
Read moreQuantum groups with invariant integrals.
Quantum groups have been studied intensively for the last two decades from various points of view. The underlying mathematical structure is that of an algebra with a coproduct. Compact quantum groups admit Haar measures. However, if we want to have a Haar measure also in the noncompact case, we are forced to work with algebras without identity, and the notion of a coproduct has to be adapted. These considerations lead to the theory of multiplier Hopf algebras, which provides the mathematical tool for studying noncompact quantum groups with Haar measures. I will concentrate on the *-algebra case and assume positivity of the invariant integral. Doing so, I create an algebraic framework that serves as a model for the operator algebra approach to quantum groups. Indeed, the theory of locally compact quantum groups can be seen as the topological version of the theory of quantum groups as they are developed here in a purely algebraic context.
