Data Processing Strategy in Internet of Things Application System

Relevance. The growing integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into all areas of human life – from intelligent households to smart city infrastructure – is accompanied by an exponential increase in the volume of data being collected, transmitted, and processed in real time. When combined with artificial intelligence technologies, this data becomes the foundation for making autonomous decisions, predicting user behavior, and adapting environments to the needs of specific individuals. However, it is precisely in this context that the critically important issue of personal data protection arises. Many IoT devices operate in uncontrolled environments, have limited resources for cryptographic protection, and are vulnerable to cyberattacks and unauthorized data collection. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence algorithms used to analyze this data often exhibit the “black box” problem, where it is impossible to fully explain how and why a particular decision was made based on personalized data. The lack of transparency, combined with broad access to sensitive information, threatens fundamental human rights to privacy. The relevance of this topic is driven by the need to find balanced technical solutions that enable both effective analysis of large-scale data in IoT environments and a high level of data security. In this regard, the study of modern methods for processing, analyzing, and protecting data in IoT systems, adapted to the requirements of ethical artificial intelligence and digital privacy standards, represents one of the key challenges of contemporary digital science. The object of research: the processes of data collection, processing, analysis, and protection in IoT systems, particularly those components related to the use of users' personal information and its processing through artificial intelligence methods. Purpose of the article: research of modern methods for data processing and analysis in IoT systems. The objective of the work is to identify the most effective approaches to secure data handling, characterize existing privacy threats, and assess the potential for integrating protected analytical algorithms that meet both the technical and ethical requirements of the digital environment. Research results. A comprehensive analysis of modern approaches to data collection, processing, analysis, and protection in IoT systems has been conducted, particularly in the context of the growing role of artificial intelligence. The technological foundations of IoT functionality were examined, key architectural components identified, and their role in creating digital ecosystems for monitoring, management, and decision-making across various sectors – from household systems to critical infrastructure – was investigated. Special attention was paid to data preprocessing methods, which help reduce information load, improve the quality of analysis, and adapt data flows to the requirements of intelligent algorithms. It was demonstrated that the use of edge processing and local-level aggregation enhances both system performance and security. The main types of databases for IoT – especially those optimized for time series – were analyzed, along with tools for handling large volumes of data in cloud and hybrid environments. Conclusions. Data collection methods in IoT are multilayered and closely linked to the requirements for energy efficiency, security, latency, and system scalability. The quality and reliability of the collected information form the foundation for subsequent processing, analysis, and decision-making; therefore, the selection of sensors, communication protocols, and architectural models is of strategic importance for any IoT system. Preprocessing and efficient data storage in IoT are critical stages that ensure the quality, security, and usability of information for further analysis. They determine not only the accuracy of analytics but also the stability, scalability, and compliance with regulatory standards. This creates a demand for the development of adaptive, intelligent data processing and storage systems capable of dynamically responding to changes in device operation context and user requirements. The successful implementation of secure IoT solutions requires an integrated approach that combines technical expertise, legal knowledge, and ethical responsibility.

The enormous growth in Internet of Things (IoT) has caused large-scale transformation in data acquisition and communication mechanism for conventional IoT systems. The continuously increasing requirements for delay-tolerant delivery of services in IoT applications has led to the emergence of more scalable and energy-efficient computing platforms like edge computing. However, the massive growth in volume of data being offloaded from low-powered IoT devices to the edge has imposed challenges on edge servers in terms of traffic bottlenecks, latency, and wastage of energy. In this view, a Local Data Reduction (LDR) framework is proposed which addresses the latency issues and cost constraints to facilitate energy-efficient processing of IoT data. We exploit the Markovian birth-death process to model edge-based IoT systems and derive performance metrics for the proposed LDR model. We also provide explicit analytical solution for the total expected cost function incurred pertaining to the LDR and without LDR (WLDR) models. Through extensive numerical illustrations we validate our findings and observe that the proposed LDR model outperforms the WLDR model. Hence, the LDR model operates well to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for real-time IoT systems by favouring green computing paradigms.

PurposeThe role of big data and data analytics in the audit engagement process is evident. Notwithstanding, understanding how big data influences cognitive processes and, consequently, on the auditors’ judgment decision-making process is limited. The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework on the cognitive process that may influence auditors’ judgment decision-making in the big data environment. The proposed framework predicts the relationships among data visualization integration, data processing modes, task complexity and auditors’ judgment decision-making.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology to accomplish the conceptual framework is based on a thorough literature review that consists of theoretical discussions and comparative studies of other authors’ works and thinking. It also involves summarizing and interpreting previous contributions subjectively and narratively and extending the work in some fashion. Based on this approach, this paper formulates four propositions about data visualization integration, data processing modes, task complexity and auditors’ judgment decision-making. The proposed framework was built from cognitive theory addressing how auditors process data into useful information to make judgment decision-making.FindingsThe proposed framework expects that the cognitive process of data visualization integration and intuitive data processing mode will improve auditors’ judgment decision-making. This paper also contends that task complexity may influence the cognitive process of data visualization integration and processing modes because of the voluminous nature of data and the complexity of business processes. Hence, it is also expected that the relationships between data visualization integration and audit judgment decision-making and between processing mode and audit judgment decision-making will be moderated by task complexity.Research limitations/implicationsThere is a dearth of studies examining how big data and big data analytics affect auditors’ cognitive processes in making decisions. This paper will help researchers and auditors understand the behavioral consequences of data visualization integration and data processing mode in making judgment decision-making, given a certain level of task complexity.Originality/valueWith the advent of big data and the evolution of innovative audit procedures, the constructed framework can be used as a theoretical foundation for future empirical studies concerning auditors’ judgment decision-making. It highlights the potential of big data to transform the nature and practice of accounting and auditing.

Internet of Things (IoT) systems are characterized by highly automated operating environments, which comprise several IoT end devices (IDs) that generate vast amounts of data with strict real-time communication and high data rate requirements. Edge computing facilities are an alternative to traditional cloud computing and support massive data processing in IoT systems while reducing the burden on data centers. In this paper, we consider an edge-based IoT system that comprises an edge server (ES), edge gateways (EGs), and IDs that communicate wirelessly. The EGs reduce the load on the ES by preprocessing data received from ID. However, it may not be possible for a few EGs to accommodate a sheer number of IDs, given the limited computing power and communication coverage of the EGs. Therefore, it is necessary for a few IDs to directly connect to the ES without the support of EGs. Thus, we propose a resource orchestration scheme between EGs and ES and/or among EGs based on a Lagrangian and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition. The scheme allocates optimal resources by considering the computing capacities of EGs and ES and manages interference among the EGs to maximize the efficiency of IoT systems. The performance evaluation indicates that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes in terms of aggregate throughput, latency, data reception rate, and workload fairness among EGs by 42%, 59%, 37%, and 40%, respectively.

Herein, an Internet of Things (IoT) system with remote reconfigurable wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes is presented and its application to measure group work activity in a classroom is discussed. This IoT system consists of wiki pages, bots, (defined as remotely controlled devices), gateways, and remotely reconfigurable WSN Nodes. The bots/gateways and WSN nodes of the IoT system are controlled by scripts written on wiki pages that are read by the bot/gateways, which then forward the commands contained in the scripts to the WSN nodes. Each WSN node then executes the commands, obtains the resulting sensor values, and then returns those values to the bot/gateways. The bot/gateways relay the values and write them onto the wiki page. Each WSN node is flexible and reconfigurable because its behavior can be changed by the script commands written onto the wiki page. Using this IoT system, we created a measurement system to evaluate activity levels of group work in a classroom. After developing the measurement system, we found it was possible to adjust the sampling rate for obtaining sensor values simply by rewriting the script on the wiki page without directly manipulating the WSN.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications rely on a network of heterogeneous devices including sensors and gateways. These devices are endowed with the capacity to continuously sense the environment and collect data, which can be further transfered through gateway devices to the cloud. The generated data by IoT systems is often massive. Therefore, the communication gateways might become a bottleneck affecting the system performance due to their resources constraints. This is further exacerbated in the case of bandwidth limitation. The huge amount of data generated increases also the cost associated with data storage and processing at the cloud level. Edge computing, which is a recent IoT trend can contribute to addressing these issues by delegating data processing task to the edges (e.g. gateway devices). In this paper, we propose an approach, which aims at supporting the data processing and minimizes the size of the transferred data to the cloud side. To this end, our approach is based on the notion of rules used to filter the collected data. In order to support the principle of sharing and reusing the rules and the domain knowledge, we propose a Platform Independent Model (PIM) to specify this knowledge independently from the used platform (gateway node). In particular, we define a rule meta-model to support the creation of the model that captures the domain rules. Furthermore, we use Web semantic techniques to represent the knowledge at the semantic level. This representation facilitates the instantiation of these rules and domain knowledge to obtain the Platform Specific Model (PSM) at the gateway level to process and filter the data.

The objective was to compare case ascertainment, agreement, validity, and missing values for clinical research data obtained, processed, and linked electronically from electronic health records (EHR) compared to "manual" data processing and record abstraction in a cohort of out-of-hospital trauma patients. This was a secondary analysis of two sets of data collected for a prospective, population-based, out-of-hospital trauma cohort evaluated by 10 emergency medical services (EMS) agencies transporting to 16 hospitals, from January 1, 2006, through October 2, 2007. Eighteen clinical, operational, procedural, and outcome variables were collected and processed separately and independently using two parallel data processing strategies by personnel blinded to patients in the other group. The electronic approach included EHR data exports from EMS agencies, reformatting, and probabilistic linkage to outcomes from local trauma registries and state discharge databases. The manual data processing approach included chart matching, data abstraction, and data entry by a trained abstractor. Descriptive statistics, measures of agreement, and validity were used to compare the two approaches to data processing. During the 21-month period, 418 patients underwent both data processing methods and formed the primary cohort. Agreement was good to excellent (kappa = 0.76 to 0.97; intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.49 to 0.97), with exact agreement in 67% to 99% of cases and a median difference of zero for all continuous and ordinal variables. The proportions of missing out-of-hospital values were similar between the two approaches, although electronic processing generated more missing outcomes (87 of 418, 21%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 17% to 25%) than the manual approach (11 of 418, 3%, 95% CI = 1% to 5%). Case ascertainment of eligible injured patients was greater using electronic methods (n = 3,008) compared to manual methods (n = 629). In this sample of out-of-hospital trauma patients, an all-electronic data processing strategy identified more patients and generated values with good agreement and validity compared to traditional data collection and processing methods.

With the continuous development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the needs of the times, the number of IoT edge devices is rapidly increasing, and to be able to provide users with more reliable information services and decision-making, this paper constructs an IoT system based on cloud-edge collaboration. Based on cloud-edge collaboration, data mining technology is used to categorize data, and regression models and branch neural networks are combined to further improve the IoT system based on cloud-edge collaboration. Finally, the particle swarm algorithm is used to optimize reinforcement learning, and the framework of an IoT system built on cloud-edge partnership is established. Through the data processing experiments on IoT edge computing, the data mining performance of the IoT edge computing-based data mining method is improved by 0.0295, 0.1870, and 0.2059 on the large datasets of Dataset4 and Dataset5, respectively. the average turnaround time is lower than 6.5 for different edge computing power levels. The system rewards are gradually improved from 5.3 to 8.2, and the number of packet loss of the algorithm is less than 5. The feasibility and effectiveness of the IoT data mining method and system based on cloud-edge collaboration are confirmed by this study, and a feasible method for data mining can be applied to IoT systems under cloud-edge collaboration.

Internet of Things (IoT) systems are characterized by being highly heterogeneous, distributed, and scalable, made up of a variety of devices that operate in uncertain and ubiquitous settings. In this sense, models@runtime emerges as a promising software development approach to address IoT systems’ intrinsic characteristics. This study presents a systematic review to know the state of the art using of models@runtime to support IoT systems’ operation. The methodology proposed by Kitchenham has been used to carry out this research. The systematic review answers the following research questions: i) How are models@runtime being used in the IoT domain? And ii) How is addressed the research in studies related to the use of models@runtime in the IoT domain? Initially, 692 primary studies were retrieved, where 50 relevant studies related to approaches based on models@runtime for IoT were selected after applying the corresponding inclusion and exclusion criteria. Those primary studies were classified based on the extraction criteria. Among review’s main results are that the models@runtime have been widely used to support the monitoring and self-adaptation mechanisms in IoT systems, as opposed to the few studies found aimed at interoperability, quality assurance, self-organization, and self-optimization of IoT systems, consisting of essential research opportunities.

Advanced digital signatures for preserving privacy and trust management in hierarchical heterogeneous IoT: Taxonomy, capabilities, and objectives

Wireless communication in Internet of Things (IoT) systems involves several devices communicating in the limited available frequency spectrum using different wireless communication standards. To achieve efficient spectrum usage in the IoT systems, it is desired to have the ability of dynamic spectrum allocation. Cognitive radios (CR) enable efficient spectrum utilization by performing spectrum sensing to gain the knowledge of current spectrum occupancy and dynamically reconfiguring the communication parameters, making them highly suitable for IoT systems. In this paper, we present the efficient hardware implementation of a spectrum sensing scheme for CR based IoT applications that require large bandwidth. We show that the proposed implementation on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) can achieve over 1.56x improvement in performance, while consuming 77% less generic resources and at a fractionally higher power consumption.
