Defining the framework for wireless-AMI security in smart grid

In this paper, we present a routing protocol design and implementation for the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in Smart Grid. The proposed protocol implementation is based on the framework of the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), which is proposed by IETF and currently still in its design phase. RPL is based on the idea of maintaining a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure for the network. We provide a practical implementation of RPL with a number of proper modifications so as to fit into the AMI structure and meet stringent requirements enforced by the AMI. In particular, we propose a novel DAG rank computation method and a reverse path recording mechanism, which enables real-time automated meter reading and real-time remote utility management in the AMI. Our proposed routing protocol design for AMI networks is validated through extensive simulations.

Integration of information communication technology via the Internet of Things devices and sensors can enable an efficient power service for utility providers to consumers in advanced metering infrastructure. Authentication and cryptographic mechanisms protect identity, data security and privacy from unauthorised interception for smart meters to servers. In the last couple of years, many key agreement protocols have been prescribed and deployed to fix those issues. Unfortunately, the deployed protocols did not work inside the same protocols, specifically parameter detection and recognition for session key generation, as they entail high computation time and communication bits overheads. Furthermore, the absence of forward secrecy and user anonymity affects the authentication. Therefore, we have proposed a lightweight identity-based key agreement (LIKA) utilising the Diffie–Hellman cryptography with a trusted authority. It seeks to cover both the security and performance criteria with equal weight. The protocol is evaluated by the Canetti and Krawczyk adversarial model, Avispa and cryptographic analysis released the session keys that were not considered as an adversary during mutual authentication. Moreover, as compared to related work, the proposed protocol took the least amount of time (5.319 ms and 1056 bits) for the entire process of session key generation. Furthermore, comparative analysis has shown that the LIKA adequately encompasses computation, communication, and security assessments. Consequently, it is more convenient for practical implementation for a smart grid.

Today, smart grid has been widely discussed in worldwide. As advanced metering infrastructure is one of main technologies of smart grid, its structure and functions of each component is represented. In terms of basic features of smart grid, some key capabilities that advanced metering infrastructure should possess are analyzed, and its impacts on power grid networks as well. Combining current research situation of power utility information acquisition system in china, this paper provides reference for building smart grid of user side on the basis of these preliminary analyses.

The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a vital element in the current development of the smart grid. AMI technologies provide electric utilities with an effective way of continuous monitoring and remote control of smart grid components. However, owing to its increasing scale and cyber-physical nature, the AMI has been faced with security threats in both cyber and physical domains. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the crucial cyber-physical attacks and counter defense mechanisms in the AMI. First, two attack surfaces are surveyed in the AMI including the communication network and smart meters. The potential cyber-physical attacks are then reviewed for each attack surface. Next, the attack models and their cyber and physical impacts on the smart grid are studied for comparison. Counter defense mechanisms that help mitigate these security threats are discussed. Finally, several mathematical tools which may help in analysis and implementation of security solutions are summarized.

Blockchain-based anonymous authentication and data aggregation for advanced metering infrastructure in smart grid

This paper describes the novel methodology for load management control system with continuous power supply feature in Pakistan. Smart meter and smart grids are the crucial components of this proposed power management system for diminishing the possibility of load shedding. Also, this methodology makes it possible to utilize the available energy resources more efficiently using internet of things to overcome the higher energy demands. The advanced metering infrastructure uses the power demand and supply information available from the communication network in managing the demand and supply, real time pricing problems and control over energy theft. Moreover, mathematical analysis supports the efficacy of proposed methodology.

With the rapid advancement of technology and the growing reliance on renewable energy sources, smart grids have emerged as a transformative solution for enhancing the efficiency and reliability of power distribution systems. As the smart grid ecosystem evolves, security concerns become paramount due to the interconnectedness of various components, including advanced metering infrastructure, communication networks, and distributed energy resources. It explores the diverse attack vectors that malicious actors may exploit to compromise smart grid operations and highlights the potential consequences of such security breaches, including power disruptions, data breaches, and financial losses. To counteract these risks, this paper delves into various state-of-the-art security measures and strategies that can be implemented to safeguard smart grids effectively. Moreover, the importance of collaboration between various stakeholders is described, including utility companies, government agencies, researchers, and technology vendors, to foster a holistic approach to smart grid security. By emphasizing the significance of information sharing and collaboration, this paper advocates for a robust and adaptive security framework to respond promptly to emerging threats and vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the paper explores emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and intrusion detection systems, showcasing their potential contributions in fortifying smart grid defenses. It was noted that the integration of these innovative technologies can enhance anomaly detection, facilitate secure data exchange, and reinforce the resilience of the smart grid against sophisticated cyber-attacks. Towards the end of this paper, insights into future research directions and policy implications to foster a more secure and sustainable smart grid environment is provided. By acknowledging the evolving threat landscape and the dynamic nature of the smart grid domain, this work encourages continuous research and development to stay ahead of adversaries and establish a secure foundation for the future of energy distribution.

Smart meters are key components of the smart grid infrastructure, connecting households to utility providers. With Internet connectivity to such devices, the smart grid Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is exposed to attacks by the adversary class. Any compromise of a smart meter may jeopardize the security of not just the household in question, but also the entire neighborhood network and possibly the utility provider's core network. One attack category that may pose a serious threat to the AMI is a meter compromise attack, wherein a smart meter is controlled by the adversary, with the intent of committing energy fraud. In this paper, we present a detection model based on a cumulative analysis of smart meter readings of clustered smart meters. The clustering of smart meters is done based on the physical deployment points of individual smart meters within a neighbourhood area network. Results obtained through simulation of the proposed scheme are promising.

Reducing the power supply-demand gap and increasing reliability of power supply are the challenges of current energy management. Implementation of smart grid, smart meters and smart metering can be a possible solution for power demand reduction, efficient power supply management, and optimization of management resource usages. Smart meters include sophisticated measurement and calculation hardware, software, calibration and communication capabilities. For interoperability within a smart grid infrastructure, smart meters are designed to perform functions, and store and communicate data according to certain standards. In this work we discuss smart meter and various elements of smart metering, current state of the technologies related to smart grid, smart meter, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and meter data flow in smart grid. We also discuss standards related to smart meter, meter data format and data transmission, functions of smart meter, and functionalities of smart meters, currently deployed by utilities around the world.

© 2014 IEEE. Smart home, which controls the end use of the power grid, has become a critical component in the smart grid infrastructure. In a smart home system, the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is used to connect smart meters with the power system and the communication system of a smart grid. The electricity pricing information is transmitted from the utility to the local community, and then broadcast through wired or wireless networks to each smart meter within AMI. In this work, the vulnerability of the above process is assessed. Two closely related pricing cyberattacks which manipulate the guideline electricity prices received at smart meters are considered and they aim at reducing the expense of the cyberattacker and increasing the peak energy usage in the local community. A countermeasure technique which uses support vector regression and impact difference for detecting anomaly pricing is then proposed. These pricing cyberattacks explore the interdependance between the transmitted electricity pricing in the communication system and the energy load in the power system, which are the first such cyber-Attacks in the smart home context. Our simulation results demonstrate that the pricing cyberattack can reduce the attacker's bill by 34.3% at the cost of the increase of others' bill by 7.9% on average. In addition, the pricing cyberattack can unbalance the energy load of the local power system as it increases the peak to average ratio by 35.7%. Furthermore, our simulation results show that the proposed countermeasure technique can effectively detect the electricity pricing manipulation.

Internet of Things connects people and things at any time and in any place. Smart grid is one of the promising applications of Internet of Things. Advanced metering infrastructure is one of the most significant components in smart grid which collects data from smart meters and sends the collected data to the utility center to be analyzed and stored. To implement two-way communication between smart grid components, machine-to-machine communications has a great potential. In this paper, we propose a machine-to-machine architecture for advanced metering infrastructure in Internet of Things-based smart grid and focus on finding the optimum number of collectors based on two metrics: collectors' cost and packet delay. We model advanced metering infrastructure as a queuing system and derive an expression for packet delay. We also propose a newperformance metric, the product of cost and delay (CD), so that by minimizing it, we can find the optimum number of collectors. The simulation results indicate correctness of our theoretical model and show that we can achieve a balance between cost and delay.

In this paper, we propose a unified approach for compression and authentication of smart meter reading in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). In general, smart meters are urged to send sampled reading signals at a high rate for high-quality services. Meanwhile, power reading signals have to be authenticated to prevent impersonation attacks, which can cause serious economic loss. However, the security in smart grids faces more challenges than conventional human-type communications because of limited hardware resources of a smart meter (e.g., small memory). Motivated by these problems, we study simultaneous compression and authentication for power reading signals in multicarrier systems based on the notion of compressive sensing (CS). The CS-based compression and authentication method are applied to empirically modeled signals with a shared secret key, a measurement matrix in CS between a data concentrator unit (DCU) and a legitimate smart meter. In particular, for authentication, the residual error of a received signal at the DCU is used as a test statistic for hypothesis testing, which determines whether the signal is a legitimate signal or an intrusion signal in the proposed approach. Through the analysis and simulation results, we demonstrate that the CS-based compression approach can be applied to smart meter reading with good energy efficiency. In addition, it is shown that the proposed scheme can obtain a low authentication error probability under reasonable conditions. For example, when the number of subcarriers is 64, the DCU can distinguish legitimate and intrusion smart meters with a probability of $1 - P_{E}$ , where $P_{E} \leq 10^{-4}$ .

Recently, the security of Smart Grid has become an important issue. There are many security issues which should be addressed. With that, many previous studies have discussed these issues. However, most of them focus on the overall Smart Grid system rather than the Home Network Area (HAN) in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network. The HAN has become a critical issue of Smart Grid due to save energy and to reduce energy peak loading. In-Home Display (IHD) is a useful device in the HAN. Therefore, in this paper, we design a secure authentication protocol between IHD and Head End. The protocol is compatible with IEC 62056-53 which is a Smart Grid standard. Furthermore, the proposed authentication is the first protocol which takes the relationship between landlord and tenant into account. We leverage a cellphone to accomplish this purpose. This survey paper is an excerpt of a more comprehensive study on Smart Grid (SG) and the role of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in SG. The survey was carried out as part of a feasibility study for the creation of a Net-Zero community in a city in Ontario, Canada. SG is not a single technology; rather it is a combination of different areas of engineering, communication and management. This paper intends to focus on AMI, which is responsible for collecting all the data and information from loads and consumers, as the foundation for SG. AMI is also responsible for implementing control signals and commands to perform necessary control actions, including Demand Side Management (DSM). In this paper we introduce SG and its features, establish the relation between SG and AMI, explain three main subsystems of AMI and discuss related security issues.

Industry 4.0 allows faster data accessibility, improved performance, fault identification, and remote control of machines within any smart factory. Due to the massive generation of delay-sensitive data, this system demands a robust security mechanism against security threats. In order to mitigate such potential attacks and provide security-free services, this article proposes an edge-based conditional privacy-preserving authentication scheme based on quantum key distribution protocol for secure authentication and secure communication within smart grid infrastructure. Apart from guaranteeing security against threats such as node impersonation, message tampering, and repudiation, the scheme also defends man-in-the-middle attacks, replay attacks, etc. We validate the proposed protocol through a simulation study. The result indicates that it performs reasonably well and enables unconditional security for the data exchanged between entities of smart grid infrastructure.
