Designing for workplace well-being: a design case study using aromatherapy as a provocation

One of the most highly cited papers in management is Eisenhardt’s (Acad Manag Rev 14(4):532–550, 1989) piece on the importance of case study research, in particular multiple cases (versus single cases), for theory building. We focus on this distinction between multiple versus single cases in the context of rigor and impact of management case studies (N = 173) published during the period 1996–2006 in Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. We find that this distinction of multiple versus single only crudely captures the reality of case study designs in published article. For this we propose an alternative empirical classification of case study design that is replication and non-replication, in which case studies using a replication logic either in single cases (e.g. comparing teams within an organization, where the case is the organization) or, indeed, multiple cases (e.g. comparing teams across multiple organizations) are more rigorous and also more impactful than cases who do not use replication logic. However, unlike in quantitative research, rigor is not a driver of article citations in qualitative studies. In this regard, our finding makes important contributions to scientrometric research by discussing criteria under which different case study designs can be rigorous and impactful.

The rise in performance and health concerns presents a complex challenge to workplace well-being. While existing research highlights the positive impact of exposure to nature on well-being, there is a gap in supporting biophilic building designs in workplaces. This study addresses this issue by introducing a Type-1 Interval Fuzzy Set (IFS) framework to assess workplace health, and recommends Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for enhancement. The proposed framework comprises two fuzzy subsystems targeting environmental comfort and occupational health that are integrated into a third subsystem to provide tailored NbS recommendations. A case study conducted in a coworking space validated the framework’s practical application, revealing significant improvements in environmental and occupational conditions. Key findings include a reduction in absenteeism, enhancement in employee satisfaction, and creation of more comfortable and restorative environments. Recommendations, such as green walls, indoor gardens, and natural light filters, have been shown to effectively mitigate discomfort and promote well-being. The framework demonstrated flexibility in managing uncertainties, optimizing resource allocation, and providing targeted interventions for workplace conditions. These results highlight the framework’s potential as a robust decision-support tool for improving workplace health and well-being through systematic and evidence-based strategies.

The case study method, and in particular the multiple–case studies design, offers LIS researchers a proven tool for achieving a deep understanding of a specific phenomenon—-for example, the information-seeking behavior of a particular user group. Although the case study method has been dismissed by critics who question the rigor of the approach, numerous studies over the past twenty years have demonstrated that the case study method can be used successfully to probe beneath the surface of a situation and to provide a rich context for understanding the phenomena under study. This article summarizes the application of the multiple–case studies design, in which a literal and theoretical replication strategy is used to identify consistent patterns of behavior and to uncover new and/or divergent themes. The motivation behind arts administrators' decisions to seek information is investigated using this approach and examples are given of sample selection, data collection, and analysis. Specific issues associated with the case study method are identified and practical steps used to address them are suggested.

This case study was conducted with the aim of evaluating how education related to exclusive breastfeeding is implemented and to what extent it has an impact on increasing the knowledge of postpartum mothers in the working area of the Macini Sawah Community Health Centre, Makassar City. This case study design uses a descriptive approach with a case study method. The case study in this research focuses on exploring the implementation of education on exclusive breastfeeding and its impact on the level of knowledge of postpartum mothers in the working area of the Maccini Sawah Community Health Centre, Makassar City. In this case study, data was collected using an observation form aimed at assessing the level of knowledge among postpartum mothers. The observation form was filled out directly by the respondents using paper and pen. The results of observations for 3 days showed the effectiveness of providing exclusive breastfeeding education to postpartum mothers, the level of maternal knowledge increased. After conducting a case study, it was concluded that the implementation of exclusive breastfeeding on postpartum mothers' knowledge increased after the action was given.

This study aims to evaluate the implementation of civil servant discipline enforcement based on Surabaya Mayor Regulation Number 44 of 2022 at Gubeng Subdistrict. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman within the Context–Mechanism–Outcome (CMO) framework. The findings indicate that the regulation has generally improved civil servant discipline, particularly in attendance, punctuality, administrative compliance, and public service quality. This improvement is supported by organizational context factors such as daily work culture, active leadership, and the integration of digital attendance systems. Key mechanisms driving compliance include layered supervision, persuasive coaching, and the gradual application of disciplinary sanctions. However, challenges remain, including high workloads and limited human resources, which require continuous guidance for certain employees. The study concludes that the effectiveness of civil servant discipline enforcement is largely shaped by the interaction between organizational context and policy implementation mechanisms.

The definition of aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils (2). Essential oils are steam distillates obtained from aromatic plants. Aromatherapy is a fairly new complementary therapy, although its roots are in herbal medicine, one of the oldest known forms of medicine. Aromatherapy is an accepted part of nursing care in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, and Canada, and many nurses in the United States are beginning to use aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is particularly useful in cardiology (see Table 1), because the use of familiar smells and gentle touch can be deeply reassuring. Essential oils have many other properties that can be useful in cardiology-hypotensor, sedative, antiinflammatory, antispasmodic, analgesic, antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral. Hospitalization is a process that has planning or emergency reasons that require the child to stay in the hospital. Hospitalization at school-aged children is 6-12 years forcing children to part with their beloved environment such as family and group soisalnya causing anxiety. Anxiety is an emotional response to the assessment of something dangerous, associated with feelings of uncertainty, helplessness, fear of fear is not clear why. This case study illustrates the application of bibliotherapy to decrease the anxiety level of school-aged children during hospitalization. The case study design used is descriptive case study. The case study was conducted in RSUD Dr. Adhiyatma, MPH Semarang. result of case study got decrease of subject anxiety level I before application of bibliotherapy value of anxiety level 40 after application of bibliotherapy decrease to 34 and subject II anxiety level level before applying of bibliotherapy value of anxiety level 31 after application of bibliotherapy decrease to 26. subject of subject anxiety level decrease 6 value and subject II down 5 values.

Objective : Drug abuse in adolescents is a serious problem that affects their physical, psychological, and social health. In addition, the problem of ineffective coping has a frequent impact on drug users. Data from the National Narcotics Agency show that out of 34.7 million drug users in Indonesia, the prevalence of drug attacks in West Java is at 2.45%, with a total of 850 thousand people in the age range of 10-59 years. It is hoped that this can help adolescent drug users overcome ineffective coping problems through better selfunderstanding, managing emotions, improving social skills, and forming healthy groups. Method : This research method uses a case study design. The case study design was chosen because this study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the application of psychosocial rehabilitation to adolescent drug users with ineffective coping problems. The implementation of this research lasted for 10 days located in Banjarsari District. Result : The results of the case study after being given psychosocial rehabilitation the client's coping becomes effective and regular, the client can assess the positive aspects that can be done. Clients are able to carry out methods of implementing psychosocial rehabilitation. Conclusion and Recommendations : By paying attention to the physical, psychological and social aspects of this process can help adolescents to overcome the problem of ineffective coping. Support from the family and encouragement from the social environment also influence the recovery process.

Service Design is about creating a desirable end to end experience for service-users. Participatory design involving service-users and stakeholders is an established paradigm in service design. There are constraints as well as opportunities while designing for organizational services. The Participatory design paradigm is appropriate in this context, however, the traditional participatory design methods have limitations and need to be adapted to overcome the constraints and leverage the enablers. The suggested approach comprises the aspects: a mix of tacit and explicit knowledge, synchronous and asynchronous working, full and partial participation, and a mix of ‘lite’ and in-depth application of design methods, and leveraging the knowledge externalization techniques. This service design case study is about high-touch hiring and joining experience of new entrants in a large IT organization. The outcomes confirm the benefits of the proposed approach suggesting its appropriateness for designing services within organizational context. It also offers the promise of wide applicability.

When algorithmic harms emerge, a reasonable response is to stop using the\nalgorithm to resolve concerns related to fairness, accountability,\ntransparency, and ethics (FATE). However, just because an algorithm is removed\ndoes not imply its FATE-related issues cease to exist. In this paper, we\nintroduce the notion of the "algorithmic imprint" to illustrate how merely\nremoving an algorithm does not necessarily undo or mitigate its consequences.\nWe operationalize this concept and its implications through the 2020 events\nsurrounding the algorithmic grading of the General Certificate of Education\n(GCE) Advanced (A) Level exams, an internationally recognized UK-based high\nschool diploma exam administered in over 160 countries. While the algorithmic\nstandardization was ultimately removed due to global protests, we show how the\nremoval failed to undo the algorithmic imprint on the sociotechnical\ninfrastructures that shape students', teachers', and parents' lives. These\nevents provide a rare chance to analyze the state of the world both with and\nwithout algorithmic mediation. We situate our case study in Bangladesh to\nillustrate how algorithms made in the Global North disproportionately impact\nstakeholders in the Global South. Chronicling more than a year-long community\nengagement consisting of 47 inter-views, we present the first coherent timeline\nof "what" happened in Bangladesh, contextualizing "why" and "how" they happened\nthrough the lenses of the algorithmic imprint and situated algorithmic\nfairness. Analyzing these events, we highlight how the contours of the\nalgorithmic imprints can be inferred at the infrastructural, social, and\nindividual levels. We share conceptual and practical implications around how\nimprint-awareness can (a) broaden the boundaries of how we think about\nalgorithmic impact, (b) inform how we design algorithms, and (c) guide us in AI\ngovernance.\n

Hydropower dams regulate water flows for millions of downstream inhabitants worldwide, altering water availability. Under a changing climate, flow control is often framed technically and politically as being essential for reducing drought and flood risks. However, it can also disrupt ecological flows, impact livelihoods and erode environmental knowledge. We contribute to this debate by examining how ribereños —rural communities in Colombia characterized by their interdependence with rivers—experience fluctuating water levels. We focus on ‘dry events’, situations where decreases in the river's water levels hinder ribereños' livelihoods. Our case study, the Lower Sogamoso River (dammed in 2014 by Hidrosogamoso Dam), no longer follows a clear pattern of rising and falling waters, which previously allowed ribereños to prepare socially and economically for seasonal activities. Drawing on a relational perspective on rivers and infrastructures, we mobilize the notion of rhythms to account for the temporal dimensions of hydrosocial relations and sociotechnical infrastructures. Using an interdisciplinary combination of ethnographic research and statistical analysis of hydrological and electricity data, three distinct situations come into view: the regular dry season, hourly low water levels and the 2015–2016 El Niño. Our findings demonstrate how temporal operations of hydropower and associated pricing mechanisms transform the hydrosocial relations of riverine communities. Daily operations disrupt gradual seasonal streamflow patterns, hindering seasonal livelihoods, while pricing decisions generate disruptive events on an hourly scale. During the 2015–2016 drought, the energy company's water storage and price bidding strategy led to unprecedented water level variations. Synthesis and applications . Our interdisciplinary approach made it possible to connect the temporal experiences of communities with large electricity market fluctuations. We emphasize that dry events must be assessed not only based on climatic conditions or dam presence but also taking into account the intersection of temporal logics at multiple scales. We underscore the need to evaluate streamflow variations at both daily and hourly scales, which are often overlooked in research and policy yet are essential for riverine cultures across the globe.
