Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper investigates the impact of global value chain (GVC) participation on energy efficiency in developing countries, using firm-level data from Chinese manufacturing enterprises. While integration into GVCs may expose firms to energy-intensive production segments, it also offers access to advanced technologies and spillovers. We develop a theoretical framework linking firms’ GVC embeddedness to energy consumption behavior and test its implications using detailed trade and energy use data. Our empirical results show that greater GVC participation significantly improves firms’ energy efficiency. Mechanism analysis reveals that GVC embeddedness enhances innovation input and productivity, both of which contribute to energy performance improvements. The effects are more pronounced for private firms and firms in capital-intensive industries. Our study contributes to the literature by offering the first firm-level evidence on the environmental implications of GVC integration, revealing importance of participating in GVC in solving the energy problems for the developing countries.
