Chapter 2 - Green Engineering and Sustainable Design Aspects of Waste Management
Water is a fundamental resource for human survival, agriculture, industry, and the environment. However, with the growing global population, climate change, and unsustainable water management practices, the world is facing increasing pressure on freshwater resources. The future of water resources management relies heavily on the integration of futuristic and sustainable engineering and technology solutions. The field of water resources engineering is undergoing a transformative shift, guided by cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices, aiming to enhance water availability, improve water quality, and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.Various fields associated with innovation includes but not limited to assessing the effects of climate and land-use change on flood, design of water distribution networks, coastal engineering, flood forecasting and warning system, flood hazard analysis multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques, impact of projected climate variability on agricultural water demand, India's flood risk assessment and mapping, weir and spillways designing, ensemble modeling of ice glacier, experimental study on effect of deficit irrigation, utilizing statistical and MCDM techniques in indexing morphometric parameters, mitigating the after-effect of climate-induced disaster through energy dissipation, assessment of irrigation water management, trend analysis of precipitation and drought characteristics, experimental investigation of the efficiency of stone revetment, evapotranspiration study for cropping system, rainfall-runoff modeling, etc.One of the most promising technological advancements in water resource management is the development of management system assesses the combined effects of climate and land-use change on flood recurrence.Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts have become more frequent and intense, which has negatively impacted agricultural productivity and other livelihoods that depend on the river. In addition, the changes in temperature and precipitation patterns have led to changes in the hydrological cycle, which has affected the availability and quality of water in the river. The changes in the hydrological cycle have also led to the increased occurrence of landslides, which have further impacted the ecological health of the river (Shams et al. 2024).Not only that, but a water distribution network (WDN) is also one of the costliest components of any water supply project, therefore, the cost optimization of a WDN design is required. The simplest WDN optimization problem consists of selecting the most appropriate diameter for each pipe of the network from the set of available discrete pipe-diameters to minimize the network cost.Gangwani et al. (2024) proposed a fast, efficient, and parameter-less Rao-II algorithm has been used earlier with penalty-based approaches for the optimal design of WDNs.In this study, the application of a Rao-II algorithm is further explored with three self-adaptive penalty approaches to compare the convergence characteristics.Basu et al. (2024) suggested that development of coastal roads and bridges is important to overcome traffic congestion in densely populated coastal cities like Mumbai. In the study, they emphasized the importance of assessment of wave conditions required for the extension of jetties to facilitate the transportation of bridge components to build the sea link bridge during the non-monsoon season so that zero downtime for operability at jetties is ascertained.Flooding poses a severe threat to communities and infrastructure worldwide, which requires advanced flood forecasting warning systems. In this research paper, Patel et al. (2024a) proposed a real-time flood forecasting and warning system for the Dharoi Dam in the state of Gujarat, India. The novel system combines ensemble techniques and hydrological modeling simulations to enhance flood prediction accuracy and provides a timely warning. The study focuses on critical gaps in the current flood forecasting capabilities, recognizes the need for improved flood management in the region, and builds upon the existing research conducted globally and in India.Flood risk assessment remains a crucial element, particularly within locations highly susceptible to repeated flood occurrences.Solanki et al. (2024) seek to conduct an elaborate flood risk analysis for Mumbai, India based on an integrated method of geographic information systems and analytic hierarchy process (AHP).In this study, land use/land cover, average annual rainfall, elevation, drainage density, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, distance from rivers as well as distance from roads are identified and considered. One area may be likely to be affected by flood and another with drought due to large land area of India and its climatic condition.Water scarcity predominantly affects agriculture production.

Sustainable Flue Gas Treatment System Assessment for Iron and Steel Sector: Spherical Fuzzy MCDM-Based Innovative Multistage Approach
The emission crisis in the iron and steel sector prompted the search for modern systems that contribute to reducing the resulting emissions to alleviate the growing concerns about global warming. This research evaluates four flue gas treatment systems in the iron and steel sector through a case study in Egypt. A comprehensive approach is presented through which experts can use linguistic terms and their corresponding spherical fuzzy numbers (SFNs) to express their views on identifying aspects and indicators that affect the sustainability of flue gas treatment systems. Also, determining the optimal system for dealing with emissions is a necessary task, which requires consideration of many aspects of sustainability, including economic, environmental, and technological aspects and their subindicators. This paper presents a new hybrid approach to multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) under a spherical fuzzy (SF) environment that takes into account several incompatible indicators. The SF-CRiteria Importance through Intercriteria Correlation (SF-CRITIC) has been used to assess and prioritize the main aspects and subindicators. The SF-COmbinative Distance-based ASsessment (SF-CODAS) has been applied to evaluate and rank the selected systems. A sensitivity analysis has been implemented to confirm the effectiveness of the recommended hybrid approach and the stability of its results by changing the weights of the indicators used. Also, a comparative analysis has been fulfilled with MARCOS and WASPAS methods under an SF environment to validate the proposed approach. The findings show that the environmental aspect is the highest evaluated with a weight of 0.431, followed by the technological aspect with a weight of 0.326, and they are the basis for enhancing the sustainability of low-emission systems in the iron and steel sector. Furthermore, the conclusions advise optimizing low-emission systems for sintering flue gas in the iron and steel sector to improve sustainability.

The nuclear propulsion of merchant ships: Aspects of engineering, science and technology
This paper first considers the underlying nuclear physics and then explores the potential application of that science to the propulsion of merchant ships. It then examines the options for the exploitation of nuclear technology and considers some of the engineering implications of deploying the technology. Consideration is then given to the application of nuclear propulsion to a series of ship types, including tankers, container ships and cruise vessels. In each case two sizes of ship are chosen, one of fairly conventional size and the other much larger.

An educational effort was undertaken at Georgia Southern University that sought to incorporate the three aspects of Sustainability, environment and technology into a single course. An effort was also made to tie these three seemingly diverse constituents into one coherent course at the introductory level. This paper seeks to present the results of that effort. Audio-visual media are the chosen field of instruction to facilitate knowledge transfer to students. Some of the aspects that receive attention include geology, business case for sustainability, recycling, disassembly and green manufacturing etc. The basic objective of this course is to bring together students from various educational backgrounds in one place and encourage critical and creative thinking using a systems approach. The course focuses on hands-on activities such as mini-design projects that challenge students to think creatively and make some aspect of any chosen system more sustainable.

Sustainable Development with Microsurfacing: A Review
In recent times, sustainable development has been the primary focus of research and development in the pavement industry. In this respect, microsurfacing was viewed as sustainable pavement preservation and has emerged as a cost-effective pavement maintenance alternative for enhancing performance, increasing service life, and ensuring safety with minimal environmental impact. In this review, the impact of microsurfacing application on the economic, social, and environmental components were explored from the published literature. Studies show that with microsurfacing application, there was a 31 % savings in cost as compared with conventional hot-mix asphalt. Furthermore, a brief economic analysis was carried out, which confirmed microsurfacing as one of the most cost-effective preventative treatment with minimum equivalent uniform annual cost. However, the economic benefits of microsurfacing were dependent upon distress type and intensity, pavement age, climatic conditions, and traffic volume. In addition, the social benefits included enhanced skid resistance, reduced hydroplaning, better riding quality, and pleasing aesthetic appearance. Moreover, the main environmental benefits of microsurfacing, as reported by various researchers, included low energy consumption, reduced greenhouse gas emission, conservation of natural resources, and reduction in tire-pavement noise. Review also reported the strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats of microsurfacing application. Even with certain weakness and probable challenges, application of microsurfacing showed enormous potential for further improvement. Incorporation of recycled or waste materials, compaction prior to opening for traffic, and project-related specifications are some areas for further research. However, certain challenges, like insufficient fund allocation, implementation or performance issues, and production variability, had to be mitigated for smooth and rapid development. Thus, with encouraging results and a promising future, microsurfacing had excelled in both technological and sustainability aspects.
