Effect of supply chain technology internalization and e-procurement on supply chain performance

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the complex interrelationships among the key constructs, supply chain orientation (SCO), supply chain integration (SCI) and supply chain performance (SCP) in Indian manufacturing industries. These relationships have been studied using the relational view (RV) and the knowledge-based view (KBV) theoretical perspectives. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual model was derived from the existing body of knowledge in the supply chain domain. The study is based on a sample size of 122 data collected via face-to-face meetings with the Indian manufacturers using well-established scales. The covariance-based structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings In Indian manufacturing and supply chains, SCO has a positive relationship with SCI and SCP. Moreover, the direct impact of SCO on SCP diminishes when SCI is used as a mediating variable. This study also observes positive impact of: i) SCO on SCP, ii) SCI on SCP and iii) discovery of mediating role of SCI on SCP under the theoretical lenses of RV and KBV. Research limitations/implications Cross-sectional survey of manufacturing firms of one country (using one response per firm) calls for validation covering other parts of the world and demands a longitudinal survey. This research will trigger more scholarly, practice and policy debate among researchers studying Indian and emerging economies context. Practical implications The notion of a holistic view of the SC with a focus on improving the customer value can enhance strategic partnerships among the SC partners (i.e. SCI) and overall SCP. Firms should make efforts to include SCI in SC designs to successfully transform SCO into SCP. Originality/value The originality of the research lies in studying the complex interrelationships among key concepts of SC in a unique Indian manufacturing context. The Indian supply chains operate in a set of unique characteristics, which have been detailed out in this paper. This paper not only establishes the mediating role of SCI for overall SCP in emerging economies but also enhances the scholarly knowledge in the SC domain. Most studies report SCO as a single-order construct, measured by scales comprising of only few items. The second-order SCO measures in this study bring credibility to the findings. Additionally, it contributes to both academicians and practitioners alike in the context of an integrated SC in emerging economies.

This study investigates how tech-driven integration (TDI), supply chain flexibility (SCF), and organizational ambidexterity (ORA) influence supply chain integration (SCI) and supply chain performance (SCP) in manufacturing firms. Supply chain uncertainty and agility are examined as moderating factors in the relationship between TDI, SCF, ORA, SCI, and supply chain performance. Based on insights from two experts and a comprehensive literature review, 35 measurement items were identified for the close-ended questionnaire design. Grounded in the resource-based view, the study employs the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach to analyze 409 valid responses from the manufacturing industry. Our findings reveal that TDI and ORA positively impact SCI, while SCF has no significant influence on SCI. SCI directly influences SCP. Supply chain uncertainty moderates the two impacts: TDI and SCI; ORA and SCI. Besides, supply chain agility moderates the relationship between SCI and SCP. Our findings contribute to the literature by introducing a novel perspective on the relational dynamics of supply chain management by TDI and emphasizing the importance of organizational ambidexterity. We provide practical recommendations for managers to improve firm performance by strengthening the connections between TDI, SCF, ORA, uncertainty, agility, SCI, and SCP.

Supply Chain Management aims to overcome the challenges to integrate the Supply Chain Entities with a shared vision and evolving gradually as a legion in the business ecosystem and supply network. With the integrated inter-company activities, these entities can work as united one to respond quickly to market, to source in a multinational setting, to control available products/services to deliver to the customers, and to maximumally achieve financial benefits as a group. The Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model, which has been developed by academics and practitioners and hosted by the APCIS Supply Chain Council is a major framework to serve for Supply Chain integration as a referential guide. Its content includes supply chain management practices, business process elements and enablers in a multi-company context that business owners and supply chain consultants can adjust their supply chain activities and organizations following the referential guideline. Despite SCOR model has many merits, it does not clearly state how to identify the existing problems and how those problems can be resolved in a supply chain project. Based on the speaker's industrial experience, this tutorial will provide a mapping technique for gap identifying, prioritization of problem solutions, and business process modifications in a supply chain setting based on SCOR model. The tutorial can enhance participants' knowledge to facilitate the implementation processes of multinational supply chain projects by identifying the gaps and integrate the channel entities.

In recent years, firms have been using their supply chain integration (SCI) as a competitive weapon in the intensive, globalised competitive arena. The contingent perspective in supply chain management maintains that it is necessary to observe the interaction between SCI practices and supply chain justice. A critical issue to be resolved is whether this fit leads to synergistic and complementary effects on supply chain performance. In order to contribute to this research problem, we analysed supply chain justice instances in order to determine the importance of supply chain justice, as well as highlights complementary role in SCI and its influences on supply chain performance. A conceptual framework has been developed and five propositions established to verify the contents of a theoretical study. Accordingly, balancing the adoption of SCI practices and supply chain justice will lead to the generation of greater benefits relative to the effect of both independent driving forces on supply chain performance. Furthermore, the proposed framework has been analysed in order to examine its applicability in the South African context. The study thereby suggests the empirical research guidelines and the paper concludes with a discussion of future research.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between knowledge management (KM) processes and supply chain performance, with information technology/information system (IT/IS) support, supply chain integration, and supply chain strategy as moderators.Design/methodology/approach– Drawing on the knowledge-based view, a theoretical framework is developed consisting of six KM processes: knowledge creation, knowledge capture, knowledge organization, knowledge storage, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge application, and the performance of supply chain is evaluated in terms of four Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) process elements: Plan, Source, Make, and Delivery. Structural equation modeling is employed using a sample of 78 Iranian manufacturers in mechanical and engineering industry.Findings– Empirical results show that KM processes have a significant impact on supply chain performance which is positively moderated by IT/IS support and supply chain integration. While the moderating effect of IT/IS support is found to be considerably stronger, the relationship between KM processes and supply chain performance is not significantly different in lean and agile supply chains.Research limitations/implications– Since the sample for this study is small and drawn only from manufacturing companies in mechanical and engineering industry, it would be important to conduct further empirical studies with larger samples from a wider range of industries to improve and strengthen our analyses and provide more conclusive and generalizable results.Originality/value– Through empirical study, a better understanding of the impact of KM processes on supply chain performance and the moderating role of IT/IS support and supply chain integration can be gained.

This empirical study investigates three supply chain transformation projects in Sri Lanka. Building on two previous studies, this study attempts to discern the imperatives and essentials of a successful supply chain transformation project. In essence, this study retrospectively scrutinizes the outcomes of supply chain transformation projects commenced a minimum of 5 years earlier. By juxtaposing the outcomes with longitudinal data from of the said projects, the authors draw unique insights on the dynamics of managing a supply chain transformation project. Additionally, this study outlines critical factors that need to be taken into consideration when implementing supply chain transformation projects. Furthermore, this study improves and outlines the supply chain project management process outlined in previous studies [1]. In sum, this study connects the two growing fields of Supply Chain Management and Project Management in order to posit the importance of expanding the understanding of supply chain project management.

This study aims at investigating the roles of supply chain integration and innovation on supply chain performance through a mediation mechanism of supply chain. This study develops a theoretical framework based on resource-based view and dynamic capability theory. Based on a quantitative study of 214 Saudi hospitals, an empirical analysis was made using a structural equation modelling with AMOS. Results revealed that supply chain integration and innovation positively affect supply chain resilience and performance. In addition, supply chain resilience has a positive and significant relationship with supply chain performance. Most significantly, the relationships of supply chain integration and of innovation to supply chain performance were found to be partially mediated by supply chain resilience. These results showed that integration and innovation have direct effects to improve supply chain performance and indirect ones when hospitals make efforts in developing their resilience. This study is important for top managers of Saudi hospitals to integrate their supply chains and innovate them to improve their resilience and performance.

Indonesia has entered the Southeast Asian free trade market or better known as ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The economic growth and the increasing number of companies annually will bring some impacts on the competitions for many companies in Indonesia, so they have find their competitive advantage. The biggest competitive advantage of Indonesia is in the primary sector companies which is producing consumer goods from natural raw materials and semi-finished goods. To win the competition, the primary sectors require product standards as the company output by implementing TQM, which usually adopts ISO as the main requirement for exporting their products. This is also the criteria for the research samples. The questionnaires are distributed to 100 companies that have over 100 employees, and the returned questionnaires are 64, with four incomplete questionnaires, making the response rate of 60%. The data analysis is using PLS and proves that all hypotheses are accepted. First, TQM implementation has a positive and significant impact on supply chain integration. Second, TQM implementations in companies are able to create a proper documentation system for each department to facilitate good communication among departments. Third, TQM implementation has a positive impact on supply chain performance and employee satisfaction. Fourth, supply chain integration has a positive impact on employee satisfaction and supply chain performance. Employee satisfaction has a positive effect on supply chain performance. The overall impact of TQM implementation on supply chain performance is 0.4680. TQM implementation brings a positive impact on supply chain integration and supply chain performance, thus increases the total impact of supply chain performance

Internet of things (IoT) artificial intelligence, including data mining, intensified in all fields of life, particularly in supply chain management and operations. Blockchain technology has the capability to reform the supply chain and logistics operations management. Blockchain provides digital database solutions for all transactions across supply chain and operations management. Radio frequency identification device (RFID) is also helping technology transmit electromagnetic waves to radio-compatible integrated circuits to look after and manage the entire supply chain and logistics operations management. The Fourth Industry Revolution 4.0 refers to the automation, interconnectivity, machine learning, and real-time data that help supply chain and logistics operations management in the 21st century.

The paper concludes with an industrial case study that further substantiates these claims and shows the practical application of FM in a shipbuilding organization. The case study describes successful approaches to implementing and effectively utilizing AI and DT. It provides a practical, functional, and technical framework for applying the transformative impact of FMs on LSCM within the Industry 5.0 paradigm. This integration highlights the synergy between FM, AI, DT, and CPS and paves the way. It paves the way for a more innovative, sustainable, and competitive management of supply networks and their operations.

PurposeThe changing role of seaports in supply chains has been the subject of extensive research in the recent literature. The strategic development of seaport terminals, responding to the need for closer integration into supply chains, invites a more detailed examination of the influence of the supply chain structures on seaport performance. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the effects of supply chain structures, especially the degree of integration of seaports into supply chains, on seaport performance.Design/methodology/approachThe parameters for a structural equation model were identified in the first instance from the supply chain and seaport operations and management literature. The structural equation model itself was then devised, and subsequently refined, using data from Korean seaport terminal operators, shipping companies and freight forwarding companies. The structural equation model was used to assess the level of supply chain integration of seaports and the relationship to port performance.FindingsThe results indicate that the integration of seaports into supply chains has a positive impact on both the effectiveness and the efficiency of seaport performance. In addition, antecedents to seaport supply chain integration are identified; these suggest that a strong orientation to supply chain integration within a port operating company enables the company to adopt and implement a strategy that integrates functions within the port and with other upstream and downstream organisations.Research limitations/implicationsAs the field data were geographically limited to one country, extending the findings of this study to other geographical areas may not be possible, although the approach taken, using the structural equation modelling technique, should be transferrable elsewhere. Cross‐validation of the model would widen its applicability to other areas. The paper provides a framework that allows other researchers to examine the level of integration of ports into supply chains.Practical implicationsThe potential benefits of closer integration of seaports into supply chains are shown with supply chain integration having a positive effect on port performance. Seaports which do not integrate with their supply chains have a lower level of performance. Thus, enhanced port performance accruing from closer integration would have positive implications both for port and terminal managers and for other supply chain participants.Originality/valueThis study, for the first time, empirically examines the impact of the integration into supply chains of seaports on their performance. This is achieved by the development of a structural equation model which is then tested in the field, thus extending the existing literature which is largely conceptual or descriptive.

The Internet of things (IoT) is a next generation of Internet connected embedded ICT systems in a digital environment to seamlessly integrate supply chain and logistics processes. Integrating emerging IoT into the current ICT systems can be unique because of its intelligence, autonomous and pervasive applications. However, research on the IoT adoption in supply chain domain is scarce and acceptance of the IoT into the retail services in specific has been overly rhetoric. This study is drawn upon the organisational capability theory for developing an empirical model considering the effect of IoT capabilities on multiple dimensions of supply chain process integration, and in turn improves supply chain performance as well as organisational performance. Cross-sectional survey data from 227 Australian retail firms was analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The results indicate that IoT capability has a positive and significant effect on internal, customer-, and supplier-related process integration that in turn positively affects supply chain performance and organisational performance. Theoretically, the study contributes to a body of knowledge that integrates information systems research into supply chain integration by establishing an empirical evidence of how IoT-enabled process integration can enhance the performance at both supply chain and organisational level. Practically, the results inform the managers of the likely investment on IoT that can lead to chain’s performance outcome.

This research aims to observe the impact of bullwhip effect on supply chain performance, the research is focused on how the bullwhip effect distorts the information sharing and to what extent that distortion effects the supply chain performance of a firm. This research also explains that the quality and quantity of information sharing deeply effects the supply chain performance. It tries to establish the fact that if the information is accurate and is shared timely, this can lead to increased performance, it also emphasizes on the importance of the supply chain integration and partner’s relationship in mitigating the bullwhip effect.
 This research study will serve as an important contribution to the filed of supply chain management, as such type of research has not been conducted earlier by keeping the Pakistani firms as the unit of analysis. The study reveals that through proper, timely and accurate exchange of information between an enterprise and its supplier the firm can lessen uncertainty, order fulfillment rate is improved, costs is reduced and can ultimately increase the performance.
 The study reveals that bullwhip effect strongly effects the information and its flow, but if the information is managed properly and its quality is increased then it results in strong partner relations which leads to supply chain integration. It has been found that the supply chain integration strongly effects the supply chain performance of a firm, better the supply chain integration the better would be the performance of the overall supply chain

Over the period of last twenty years or so, field of supply chain management has evolved to such an extent that it has become backbone of today's businesses. Yet mere acceptance of the fact that supply chains can act as business levers/drivers, which can help propel organizational performance is not sufficient. There needs to be a performance measurement mechanism which can link supply chain management with overall organizational performance. This paper tries to provide brief literature review on supply chain management with a specific reference to its relationship with organizational performance. The paper studies the various approaches/methodologies used by researchers for exploring relationships between supply chain management and organizational performance. The focus of this review is to study empirical studies in particular. The review study covers articles from the field of operations, logistics and supply chain domain. Findings reveal a need for empirical research to establish link between supply chain performance & organizational performance in Indian context. Also revealed is a need to focus on softer aspects of management under supply chain management which can have significant impact on organizational performance.
