Efficient Decision-Directed Channel Estimation for OFDM Systems with Transmit Diversity

This paper analyzes and compares two time interpolators, i.e., time replica and time linear interpolator, for pilot aided channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The mean square error (MSE) of two interpolators is theoretically derived for the general case. The equally spaced pilot arrangement is proposed as a special platform for these two time interpolators. Based on this proposed platform, the MSE of two time interpolators at the virtual pilot tones is derived analytically; moreover, the MSE of per channel estimator at the entire OFDM symbol based on per time interpolator is also derived. The effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is demonstrated by numerical simulation in both the time-invariant frequency-selective channel and the time varying frequency-selective channel.

Channel estimation is a critical component in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems for ensuring reliable wireless communication. In this study, we propose a fast super-resolution convolutional neural network (FSRCNN) model for channel estimation, designed to reduce computational complexity while maintaining high estimation accuracy. The proposed FSRCNN model incorporates modifications such as replacing linear interpolation with zero padding and leveraging a new fast CNN architecture to estimate channel coefficients. Our numerical experiments and simulations demonstrate that the FSRCNN model significantly outperforms traditional methods, such as least square (LS) and linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE), in terms of mean square error (MSE) across various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Specifically, the FSRCNN model achieves MSE values comparable to MMSE estimation, particularly at higher SNRs, while maintaining lower computational complexity. At an SNR of 20 dB, the FSRCNN model shows a notable improvement in MSE performance compared to the ChannelNet and LS methods. The proposed model also demonstrates robust performance across different SNR levels, with optimal results observed when the training SNR is close to the operating SNR. These findings validate the effectiveness of the FSRCNN model in providing a low-complexity, high-accuracy alternative for channel estimation, making it suitable for real-time applications and devices with limited computational resources. This advancement holds significant promise for enhancing the reliability and efficiency of current and future wireless communication networks.

This paper deals with channel estimation for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with transmit diversity. Space time coded OFDM systems, which can provide transmit diversity, require perfect channel estimation to improve communication quality. In actual OFDM systems, training sequences are usually used for channel estimation. The authors propose a training based channel estimation strategy suitable for space time coded OFDM systems. This novel strategy provides enhanced performance, high spectrum efficiency and relatively low computation complexity.

Transmitter diversity is an effective technique to improve wireless communication performance. In this paper, we investigate transmitter diversity using space-time coding for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in high-speed wireless data applications. We develop channel parameter estimation approaches, which are crucial for the decoding of the space-time codes, and we derive the MSE bounds of the estimators. The overall receiver performance using such a transmitter diversity scheme is demonstrated by extensive computer simulations. For an OFDM system with two transmitter antennas and two receiver antennas with transmission efficiency as high as 1.475 bits/s/Hz, the required signal-to-noise ratio is only about 7 dB for a 1% bit error rate and 9 dB for a 10% word error rate assuming channels with two-ray, typical urban, and hilly terrain delay profiles, and a 40-Hz Doppler frequency. In summary, with the proposed channel estimator, combining OPDM with transmitter diversity using space-time coding is a promising technique for highly efficient data transmission over mobile wireless channels.

Channel estimation and synchronization are considered the most challenging issues in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. OFDM is highly affected by synchronization errors that cause reduction in subcarriers orthogonality, leading to significant performance degradation. The synchronization errors cause two issues: Symbol Time Offset (STO), which produces inter symbol interference (ISI) and Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO), which results in inter carrier interference (ICI). The aim of the research is to simulate Comb type pilot based channel estimation for OFDM system showing the effect of pilot numbers on the channel estimation performance and propose a modified estimation method for STO with less number of pilot to mitigate ISI effect. Channel estimation is simulated for different pilot number with 16QAM modulation in Ped-A Rayleigh channel. The STO effect assumed less than the cyclic prefix length to minimize ISI and maintain the orthogonality between subcarriers. The simulation results show that the high number of pilots are needed to achieve good channel estimation in case no synchronization used while similar results are achieved with smaller number of pilots if the propose modification on the synchronization method are used aligned with the channel estimation. The proposed system is evaluated in terms of BER and SNR.

Adaptive coded modulation (ACM) is a key technique to increase spectral as well as power efficiency for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this paper, an efficient rate adaptive low density parity check (LDPC) coded modulation (RALCM) algorithm is proposed, which maximizes the payload rate for OFDM systems under the constraint of the given transmit power and the target bit error rate (BER). Taking advantage of the two dimensional look up table for the signal to noise ratio (SNR) thresholds, the RALCM algorithm assigns different combinations of the LDPC code rates and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulations for subcarriers according to the channel frequency response (CFR). Both theoretical analysis and computer simulation show that the proposed algorithm not only efficiently improves the payload rate of the LDPC coded OFDM system over frequency selective fading channels, but also inherently reduces the computational complexity of the system optimization.

In the new generation wireless communication systems where high data rates are desired, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has become the standard method because of its advantages over single carrier modulation schemes on multi-path, frequency selective fading channels. However, inter-carrier interference due to Doppler frequency shifts, and multi-path fading severely degrades the performance of OFDM systems. Estimation of channel parameters is required at the receiver. In this paper, we present a time-varying channel modeling and estimation method based on the discrete evolutionary transform that provides a time-frequency procedure to obtain a complete characterization of a multi-path, fading and frequency selective channel. Performance of the proposed method is tested on different levels of channel noise, and Doppler frequency shifts.

The acquisition of accurate channel estimation is important for Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system to reliably recover the transmitted data symbols. Decision directed channel estimation (DDCE) has been utilized to improve the accuracy of conventional training-based channel estimation. However, this method can only provide limited improvement when the data decision feedback comprises a large portion of decision errors at low signal-to-noise (SNR) range. A new Iterative DDCE (IDDCE) scheme with reliable data feedback selection is proposed in this paper. The unreliable data decisions are eliminated on the subcarriers where noise components are enhanced due to the impact of frequency selective channel. An explicit expression of the variance of channel estimation error is derived, based on which the optimal selection criteria are also derived to minimize the variance. Simulation results show that the accuracy of channel estimation is significantly improved with the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we consider out-of-band radiations caused by high sidelobes in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Suppression of sidelobes in OFDM system allows higher spectral efficiency and less interference with existing legacy systems in OFDM based overlay system. We combine different sidelobe suppression techniques to suppress the sidelobes in OFDM system. The multiple-choice sequence (MCS) is combined with cancellation carriers (CCs) and also MCS is combined with subcarrier weighting (SW) technique. MCS is applied prior to CCs or SW techniques. Simulation results show that combining MCS with CCs and MCS with SW techniques the sidelobes in OFDM system can be significantly reduced, which allow a successful co-existance between OFDM overlay system and an existing legacy system.

The underwater acoustic channel (UAC) is known to offer poor communication channel and very limited transmission bandwidth. The channel is highly frequency selective and the channel response changes over time due to variations in channel conditions. Designing a system to deal with the frequency and time selective channel in UAC, therefore, becomes very challenging. We attempt to solve this problem by modeling the underwater acoustic channel, using a coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. A detailed explanation of the channel model is provided, which was used for the performance evaluation of the proposed system. We consider, not only the channel variation due to the positional changes of the node and buoy, but also the shadowing effects caused by the surrounding objects near the transmitters. We designed a low-density parity check (LDPC) coded OFDM (COFDM) system to deal with the negative effects of deep sub-band fading problems in OFDM systems. The design is simulated over a realistic (lognormal fading) channel, which shows a robust performance of our designed system in comparison with the un-coded communication system.

ABSTRACTWhile inter-symbol interference is not of concern, inter-carrier interference that is caused by carrier frequency offset (CFO) is more concerned in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The estimation of channel impulse response (CIR) is another important parameter of interest in the system. Recently, a number of approaches for the joint estimation of CFO and CIR in OFDM systems have been proposed in the literature, and most of them are traditional maximum-likelihood-based approaches. In this paper, we propose a number of mixture cost-reference particle filtering (CRPF) approaches for joint estimation of CIR and CFO, and a couple of them can be applied without the knowledge of both state and measurement noise statistics. Conventional least mean squares algorithm or recursive least squares algorithm is jointly employed with recently developed CRPF for nonlinear and multiple parameters estimation in OFDM systems. The computer simulation results show that mixture CRPFs are more robust against particle impoverishment (PI) problem than standard mixture particle filtering (PF) and mixture regularized PF (RPF) approaches although RPF was particularly developed to tackle the PI problem. In this paper, we investigate a number of mixture PF approaches including ones that do not need the information of noise statistics for the joint estimation of CFO and channel in OFDM systems.

In this paper, we derive the achievable rate of single-carrier frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, constrained on low resolution analog to digital converters (ADCs). We assume that there is a full knowledge of channels at both transmitter and receiver sides. We model low resolution ADCs with an additive uniform quantization noise. We consider an ultra-wide band millimeter wave (mm-Wave) system with a frequency selective channel. The channel is based on practical results at mm-Wave frequencies. Our numerical results show that SC-FDE systems with minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizers outperform OFDM and SC-FDE systems with zero forcing (ZF) equalizers at high signal to noise ratio (SNR) regimes. Moreover, benefits of increasing the ADCs resolution are not significant due to exponentially increment in the power consumption of ADCs.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems work well if the subcarriers are orthogonal to each other. However, the orthogonality among subcarriers may not exist and result in inter-carrier interference (ICI) at the receiver. This may cause by residual carrier frequency offset, time variations due to Doppler shift or phase noise. Further developing the parallel cancellation (PC) scheme to mitigate the ICI of OFDM systems, we expand this OFDM symbol-based PC scheme into a space-frequency (SF) coded system. This new simple space- frequency parallel cancellation (SFPC) scheme is a technique that combines the SF and PC schemes together. Computer simulations indicate that OFDM systems using the SFPC scheme outperform the regular PC and SF systems in slow and fast frequency selective fading channels, specifically at a high signal-noise-ratio (SNR). Furthermore, the error floor of the SFPC-OFDM system is significantly lower than that of the PC and SF systems without increasing computational load. Additionally, the SFPC scheme is a simple multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) system.

It is well known that Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems suffer from intercarrier interference (ICI) in mobile environment due to loss of orthogonality among subcarriers caused by Doppler shifts. There exist many ICI mitigation techniques in the literature to improve the performance of OFDM systems. However, most of the existing ICI mitigation techniques assume the OFDM transmission bandwidth is narrow enough that the frequency offsets on all subcarriers are identical. In a wideband OFDM transmission or a non-contiguous OFDM spanning over large bandwidth, the Doppler shifts on different subcarriers are different, especially in high speed aerial vehicle communication systems. In this paper, we analyze the wideband OFDM system in high mobility environment where the frequency offsets vary from subcarrier to subcarrier. We then propose a novel ICI cancellation scheme to eliminate the ICI effect and offer the wideband OFDM system significantly improved BER performance. Simulation results in AWGN channel and multipath fading channel confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in the presence of frequency offset and time variations in the channel, offering the best BER performance available which matches the BER performance of wideband OFDM system without ICI. To our knowledge, this paper is the first to address the ICI problem of varying frequency offsets across subcarriers in wideband OFDM system.

A Krylov subspace based low-rank channel estimation in OFDM systems
