Optimal reliable data feedback selection based iterative decision-directed channel estimation for OFDM system

In this paper, a novel DFT-based pilot-symbol-aided channel estimation algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is presented. By using transform domain cluster and discriminant analysis, this algorithm can adaptively remove the noise in the channel impulse response (CIR). Then as the noise is removed, the accuracy of channel estimation can be improved dramatically. With a number of simulation experiments, the efficacy of the proposed channel estimation algorithm is validated by the numerical results.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is extensively employed due to its advantages in countering channel perturbations, such as multipath fading and frequency selective fading. Nevertheless, the intercarrier interference and sensitivity to synchronization error are the issues that OFDM technology has to confront and resolve. To achieve reliable communication, the accuracy of channel estimation is of particular significance. In this paper, the base extension model is utilized for channel estimation on the MATLAB platform. The Base Expansion Model (BEM) can capture the key characteristics of the channel with fewer parameters, thereby reducing the complexity and enhancing the accuracy of channel estimation. In the system simulation, the signal transmission effect of the current channel is evaluated by comparing the mean error variance and bit error rate under different SNR values. The performances of CE-CEM, P-CEM and GCE-BEM under LS, MMSE and LMMSE are compared, and the best performance of GCE-BEM under LMMSE is obtained, realizing accurate channel estimation.

FBMC is a pivotal system in 5G, serving as a cornerstone for efficient use of available bandwidth while simultaneously meeting stringent requirements for high spectral efficiency. Notably, FBMC harnesses the power of multicarrier modulation (MC), a good alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology that supports fourth-generation (4G) systems. The wireless communications field is full of challenges, the most important of which are channel estimation and interference cancellation, both of which deserve comprehensive study to increase the efficiency of data transmission. In this paper, our investigation takes a deliberate step towards the convergence of two prominent modulation models: OFDM and FBMC. We specifically contrast these modulation techniques with the intricate field of joint channel estimation and interference cancellation (JCEIC). In this research study, we take advantage of recurrent neural networks' (RNNs') efficiency as a vehicular channel to perform precise channel estimation and recovery of uncorrupted transmitted signals, thereby lowering the bit error rate (BER). Our channel estimation for a dual selective channel is based on the thoughtful placement of pilots scattered over the temporal and frequency dimensions, and is further improved by the interference cancellation method of low complexity that was selected. Our JCEIC proposal aims to integrate RNNs carefully, using the output sequences of JCEIC algorithms as useful inputs to this neural architecture. By clearly demonstrating a decrease in BER as compared to traditional approaches, it is evident that the performance of the novel approach is near to that of a perfect channel. Additionally, a comparison of the performance of FBMC and OFDM systems at various signal-to-noise ratios reveals a clear performance divide that favors the former in terms of system efficiency. The BER is restricted by FBMC to a commendable threshold of less than 0.1 at a modest 5 dB, continuing the higher trend started by its improved RNN-based channel estimate. The accuracy of channel estimation is clearly improved by this paradigm shift, and the computing complexity typical of 5G networks is also clearly reduced.

Channel estimation and synchronization are considered the most challenging issues in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. OFDM is highly affected by synchronization errors that cause reduction in subcarriers orthogonality, leading to significant performance degradation. The synchronization errors cause two issues: Symbol Time Offset (STO), which produces inter symbol interference (ISI) and Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO), which results in inter carrier interference (ICI). The aim of the research is to simulate Comb type pilot based channel estimation for OFDM system showing the effect of pilot numbers on the channel estimation performance and propose a modified estimation method for STO with less number of pilot to mitigate ISI effect. Channel estimation is simulated for different pilot number with 16QAM modulation in Ped-A Rayleigh channel. The STO effect assumed less than the cyclic prefix length to minimize ISI and maintain the orthogonality between subcarriers. The simulation results show that the high number of pilots are needed to achieve good channel estimation in case no synchronization used while similar results are achieved with smaller number of pilots if the propose modification on the synchronization method are used aligned with the channel estimation. The proposed system is evaluated in terms of BER and SNR.

This paper deals with channel estimation for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with transmit diversity. Space time coded OFDM systems, which can provide transmit diversity, require perfect channel estimation to improve communication quality. In actual OFDM systems, training sequences are usually used for channel estimation. The authors propose a training based channel estimation strategy suitable for space time coded OFDM systems. This novel strategy provides enhanced performance, high spectrum efficiency and relatively low computation complexity.

To reduce the complexity involved in decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with transmit diversity, both data decoupling and direct cancellation of inter-antenna interference (IAI) suffer from residual IAI caused by channel frequency selectivity and time selectivity. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to improve the performance of low complexity DDCE in OFDM systems with transmit diversity. The proposed algorithm includes a new data decoupling scheme with weaker assumptions regarding channel frequency response, and residual IAI cancellation using the results of the DDCE. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of MSE and BER considerably.

In this paper, we evaluate the computational complexity and the performance of the RAKE receivers for the Direct Sequence---Ultra Wideband (DS-UWB) with considering the accuracy of channel estimation in a multipath channel. As RAKE receivers for DS-UWB, we consider the maximal-ratio combining (MRC)-RAKE, the minimum mean square error (MMSE)-RAKE, and the MRC-RAKE-Equalizer that is the MRC-RAKE followed by a liner equalizer. Generally, if the channel estimation is perfect, as the number of fingers or taps increases, the performance of each receiver is improved, however the computational complexity of each receiver increases. In practice, the channel estimation is not perfect. The channel estimation error makes their performances degraded. Therefore, the performances of the RAKE receivers depend on the accuracy of channel estimation. Consequently, we evaluate the computational complexities and the Bit Error Rates (BERs) of MRC-RAKE, MMSE-RAKE, and MRC-RAKE-Equalizer with considering the accuracy of channel estimation for DS-UWB. We show that the accuracy of channel estimation affects the BER of each receiver significantly. We also show that when the accuracy of channel estimation is high, MRC-RAKE-Equalizer can achieve the better BER than MMSE-RAKE with less computational complexity, while MMSE-RAKE can achieve the better BER than MRC-RAKE-Equalizer when the accuracy of channel estimation is low.

As an effective technique for combating multipath fading and for high-bit-rate transmission over wireless channels, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is extensively used in modern digital television terrestrial broadcasting systems to support high performance bandwidth-efficient multimedia services. Accurate channel estimation is important for the application of simple channel equalization for the broadband multi-carrier orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems and the accuracy of the channel estimation is crucial to the performance of the overall orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system in terms of the symbol error rate. In this paper, a robust channel estimation scheme is proposed for the receiver of the time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based Chinese digital television terrestrial broadcasting systems. Simulations under different channel situations show that the proposed channel estimation scheme can also effectively solve the phase noise problem existing at the receiver and verify the efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Channel estimation is a critical component in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems for ensuring reliable wireless communication. In this study, we propose a fast super-resolution convolutional neural network (FSRCNN) model for channel estimation, designed to reduce computational complexity while maintaining high estimation accuracy. The proposed FSRCNN model incorporates modifications such as replacing linear interpolation with zero padding and leveraging a new fast CNN architecture to estimate channel coefficients. Our numerical experiments and simulations demonstrate that the FSRCNN model significantly outperforms traditional methods, such as least square (LS) and linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE), in terms of mean square error (MSE) across various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Specifically, the FSRCNN model achieves MSE values comparable to MMSE estimation, particularly at higher SNRs, while maintaining lower computational complexity. At an SNR of 20 dB, the FSRCNN model shows a notable improvement in MSE performance compared to the ChannelNet and LS methods. The proposed model also demonstrates robust performance across different SNR levels, with optimal results observed when the training SNR is close to the operating SNR. These findings validate the effectiveness of the FSRCNN model in providing a low-complexity, high-accuracy alternative for channel estimation, making it suitable for real-time applications and devices with limited computational resources. This advancement holds significant promise for enhancing the reliability and efficiency of current and future wireless communication networks.

This work pertains to the use of superimposed training (ST) for channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based systems. A time domain coherent averaging based channel estimator is derived from the least squares criterion. By exploiting the periodicity of the training sequences in the time domain and inserting zeros instead of data at some of the training sequence subcarrier locations depending on the desired estimation accuracy, a controlled superimposition technique is proposed. This method includes the flexibility to trade off between bandwidth efficiency and performance. The mean squared estimation error (MSEE) performance of such a system is mathematically analyzed and a training sequence selection criterion optimizing the same is proposed. The simulation performance of the scheme is presented in terms of the MSEE and the bit error rate (BER) of the OFDM system. Such a scheme is attractive in high data rate scenarios in closed loop OFDM systems.

In this paper, a scheme for constructing the flat frequency spectrum of interleaved frequency division multiple access (IFDMA) is proposed. Since IFDMA is one of the single carrier modulation schemes, the frequency spectrum components are fluctuated and depend on the information data sequence. Even if IFDMA modulation scheme makes frequency spectrum dispersive for obtaining frequency diversity gain, frequency diversity gain is reduced by the fluctuation of frequency spectrum. In addition, in decision directed channel estimation (DDCE), which achieves good channel estimation accuracy in fast fading environment, the accuracy of channel transfer function estimated at the significant attenuated frequency component is much degraded. In the proposed technique, random phase sequence is multiplied to the information data sequence for constructing the flat frequency spectrum. As a result, the frequency diversity gain is enlarged and the accuracy of channel estimation by DDCE is improved. Furthermore we propose the blind estimation technique for the random phase sequence selected by transmitter. We show the effects of the proposed scheme by computer simulation.

A Krylov subspace based low-rank channel estimation in OFDM systems

A decision-directed (DD) channel estimation based on iterative linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. Existing DD channel estimation is well known to have the problem of error propagation because of symbol-by-symbol detection. The proposed algorithm can estimate the correction term of current channel state information (CSI) according to the error vector of previous CSI by applying the orthogonality principle, and corrects the current CSI with this correction term. Analysis and simulation results have shown that this method has no error propagation problem. The performance of the proposed algorithm is much better than the conventional DD channel estimation, and close to the optimal LMMSE estimator, but with much less computational complexity compared with the optimal LMMSE estimator.

This paper analyzes and compares two time interpolators, i.e., time replica and time linear interpolator, for pilot aided channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The mean square error (MSE) of two interpolators is theoretically derived for the general case. The equally spaced pilot arrangement is proposed as a special platform for these two time interpolators. Based on this proposed platform, the MSE of two time interpolators at the virtual pilot tones is derived analytically; moreover, the MSE of per channel estimator at the entire OFDM symbol based on per time interpolator is also derived. The effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is demonstrated by numerical simulation in both the time-invariant frequency-selective channel and the time varying frequency-selective channel.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is widely used to mitigate inter-symbol interference (ISI) from multipath fading. However, the open nature of wireless OFDM systems makes them vulnerable to jamming attacks. In this context, pilot jamming is critical as it focuses on corrupting the symbols used for channel estimation and equalization, degrading the system performance. Although neural networks (NNs) can improve channel estimation and mitigate pilot jamming penalty, they are also themselves susceptible to malicious perturbations known as adversarial examples. If the jamming attack is crafted in order to fool the NN, it represents an adversarial example that impairs the proper behavior of OFDM systems. In this work, we explore two machine learning (ML)-based jamming strategies that are especially intended to degrade the performance of ML-based channel estimators, in addition to a traditional Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) jamming attack. These ML-based attacks create noise patterns designed to reduce the precision of the channel estimation process, thereby compromising the reliability and robustness of the communication system. We highlight the vulnerabilities of wireless communication systems to ML-based pilot jamming attacks that corrupts symbols used for channel estimation, leading to system performance degradation. To mitigate these threats, this paper proposes an adversarial training defense mechanism desined to counter jamming attacks. The effectiveness of this defense is validated through simulation results, demonstrating improved channel estimation performance in the presence of jamming attacks. The proposed defense methods aim to enhance the resilience of OFDM systems against pilot jamming attacks, ensuring more robust communication in wireless environments.
